Just off the top of my head one major gripe I had with Garnett's Brothers K is that it completely fucking leaves out Lizaveta's nickname Smirnatchaya. It doesn't even replace it with "stinking". The play on words used to construct Smirnakov's name is therefore completely lost on the reader, as is the significance of any time the characters describe him as "stinking".

Hi /lit/ I'm working on a novel and actually am in need of advice on how to write a proper romance.

I've never written anything of the sort but the romance between these two characters really adds to the story since it would be the backstory of the protagonist and it would explain why he acts like a douche with everyone. It is because he was unable to protect his wife who died in a terrorist attack, ever since then he fears that he will have to see those dear to him die, either because he is incapable of protecting them or simply because of time, given the fact he has been cursed with immortality.

His wife had endured the same curse and this led them to somehow connect and fall in love.

Problem is, I dunno how to put this into words in a way that works, I fear it would just feel autistic or stupid.

The setting is a Urban fantasy one that parodies various fantasy tropes, I.E.: mages have to pay a monthly mana bill to Telecom Italia in order to cast spells and sometimes their connection to the world ' s leylines may lag resulting in severely delayed magics.

The novel is in Italian,so I don't think I could share it here, at the moment I was starting to write a part in which the protagonist reminisces about the past after drinking, but as I said I dunno how to write this flashback about his romance.

Hmmmm. I can only suggest that when you make her die, you have to give clues that something bad has happened. Like lets say he wakes up and hears on the news that a fire went off in a building. Then he texts her and gets no response but hes at work and knows its busy for both of them so he doesn't take it personally and continues with his work. He meets at the restaurant but she still hasn't arrived so he goes to her place and discovers their is a candle light vigil for her cause she died in the fire. The real kicker could be that as he is mopping around the streets, he bumps into a stranger who tells him to get a hold of himself, sort of symbolizing that the world continues if you lose something.

The white Plague talks about a dude who goes nuts after his wife and daughters dies and creates a virus to kill all women. That might help you when he goes crazy.

Thanks again for the recommendation, I eventually decided on this book as The Loser's was not translated to my language (which was a must for the assignment) and the The Gulag Archipelago did not have its abridged version translated.

I would probably not have chosen Poor Folk otherwise since I'm generally not a fan of romance and the 'letter exchange' used to tell the story didn't really appeal to me.

But I'm happy that I in the end did choose this book, I really enjoyed it and I think it opened my eyes to different kinds of literature than I've previously read.

I'll probably read The Gulag Archipelago unabridged at some point simply because the subject interests me.

I've started writing a fantasy novel technically a fanfiction since it's based on an existing universe and I need some input on tying together the core aspects of the different religions. The source I'm basing it on mentions very little of the religious lore which leaves me a lot of creative freedom, though it also tells enough that the concept of it greatly appealed to me.

Now I'm not asking for help regarding staying true to canon (it's also not a goal I'm pursuing with this novel), rather I need help at making it sound believable and interesting.

The core idea is that the two brother's conflict is what keeps this universe together and I want to present them as either neutral, different kinds of evil or even evil vs good, depending on the reader. But in-universe I want to portray them as one side of the extreme, either the saviour or destroyer of mankind, depending on which religious follower you listen to.

But there's also a third brother which chooses to not engage the fight between his kin, since he understands that there needs to be a balance. However I don't want it to be too on the nose that I (as the author) am of the same opinion as him, I'd rather lead the reader to their own conclusion even if it's not necessarily the same as mine.

So I have two texts that I'll present without the context of the rest of the story (I'm only about 5,300 words deep). But I'll shortly mention that upon seeing the title of the book I write about in the second picture, the MC recalls the creation myth he was told by his masters and retells it for the purpose of the reader in the first image.

The first one is a creation mythos written from the perspective of an 'Innos' worshipper. My worry is that I present 'Adanos' in a too kind of a light and that I'm showing my bias for how I interpret the power balance. I try to amend this in the main characters thoughts/third person story telling that comes afterwards, but I feel like if it's meant to be written from the perspective of an 'Innos' worshipper, it would be slightly harsher on 'Adanos'. What I've presented is pretty much the only exposition I (currently) plan to shove in the readers face so plainly.

I still need to work on fleshing out the deeper lore and mythos but my idea as I mentioned in a previous post is that the gods and religion people in my universe follow (there aren't different religions, only different interpretations of the same) is in actuality, false.

Many thousands of years ago three brothers managed to attain immortality and with it the time required to delve ever deeper into their study of the arcane. Eventually they individually became strong enough to single handedly overthrow whole kingdoms, and so they did. After many years their subjects eventually started to look up at them as almost god-like beings since they never aged and wielded awe-inspiring magick.

Then one of the brothers decided to abuse this and wrote a creation mythos of his own, with himself as the one true god. The brothers were split up and ruled a third of the world as their own kingdom, in order to not lose their footing and have people start worshipping their other brother, the other two created their own works of fiction which also they portrayed them as creators of the known universe.

My story taking place many thousands of years in the future with the three brothers having vanished (still not sure regarding the details, might just leave it vague) people have twisted and changed the stories so many times that nothing of the truth or even original fictitious stories remain. And so many different types of sects, faiths and beliefs have sprouted, but they all base it on the same three brothers. There aren't really any 'none-believers', at most some might feel apathetic towards the stories of gods.

So my plan is to have the generally accepted creation mythos be the one in the attached image. Some people might side more with either Aldhanos or Iffanos, but they base their belief upon the same stories and believers don't generally hold a grudge towards each others.

Regardless, there are still cults that either follow different texts (though still based upon the three brothers) or simply interpret the 'mainstream' text in a different way. Some may be considered straight up heretical and deserving no more than death (from the main groups perspective) whilst some are only seen as 'simple minded' followers that no one should pay any heed to. The main religion rules the world and enforces a hard restriction upon magick where only those that have for many years worked as apprentices in a monastery and proven their faith and dedication to the gods are allowed to learn and study the arcane. This is largely to control the people and not have any random cults attempting to overthrow whole kingdoms.

My main character has in the past been wronged making him lose his trust in the good will of the church and is no longer truly devoted to the Gods. I still haven't thought of something concrete that also avoids dumb clichés such as his parents being slaughtered for being 'heretics'.

The main point I wish to get across is that the worlds magick is stifled by the laws of their beliefs and my main character joins a monastery not because he's a true believer, but rather because he wants to explore the strange realm of magick and in turn earn power for himself. For example the manipulation of nature, animals and death is completely forbidden and considered heresy as these are all practices which can be attributed to the dark God Braxir.

<I realize my ramblings might not be super interesting to everyone but it feels like I gain some better insight when I put my thoughts into words. And rather than just writing them into a document no one else will read, I may get some good suggestions and critique if instead it's posted here.

It's loosely based on the universe from the games of Gothic but it on its own is very threadbare and they've even retconned things in the sequels.

But the thing you quoted is essentially the core of it, except that there's also a third brother that acts as the keeper of balance between the two. In the games it's heavily implied that the gods are actual gods but like I talked about in a few posts (like the one above your reply) this is not the route I wish to take with my universe.

In the end I've decided that what I'm writing is completely my own and instead to only draw from their universe as an inspiration rather than force myself to write within their limitations. I simply enjoy the core concepts of their fictitious religion.

When I finish reading something I want to see what other people thought about that text. My next action to browse forums seeing what other people had to say about it. This is good for finding out if other people liked it, what kind of people like it and finding other similar readings. However, this method leaves a void for deep critical analysis. Posts on forums rarely try to argue about meaning or intention. The structure less responses often are just people writing; they think it is good. Seldom with conviction and without evidence.

Where do you find analyses? I tried using my university database but found there wasn't much for analysis. There was however a handful of articles proclaiming the relevance of Marx and gender studies to any given work. Search engine results mostly gave sites similar to spark notes and sites offering to write papers in exchange for money. The former sites often had content behind paywalls that was written high school students and teachers.

I had a dream last night that I think might be taken from a book I read long ago, but I don't remember it. Here's some things that happen in it, and these memories might not be entirely correct:

>there is a group of at least 4 children, aged from 10 to 14 I think

>they go into the forbidden caves to have an adventure

>they get attacked by trolls and retreat

>(not sure if this happens before or after the trolls) the habitat of the subterranean mice gets invaded by the cats, who in turn get invaded by some larger animal. However, the group of kids manage to set everything right

>they go into the caves again, but get separated. The story follows each one separately from now on

>one of the boys is driven deep underground, where he encounters some blue ant-like creatures. They challenge him to walk through the following passage without stepping on any of them. They are arranged in complex patterns. He steps on some and receives psychological torture

>another one of the boys goes even further underground where he hallucinates. The narrator says something like 'the boy [who met the ants] wouldn't even begin to understand'

Does anyone know what book this is?

Translations can make or break a book. Can anyone recommend a good translation of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius?

I highly recommend Eknath Easwaran's translations of the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads, as well as Open Secret, Versions of Rumi by John Moyne and The Mahaharata by Andy Fraenkel. What other translations would you recommend?
