Pic rel translation is the biggest slog to read I've ever encounteted. Is Constance Garnett a shitty translator or am I too big of a retard? Should I just learn Russian and go with the original instead?

I dont know about that particular translation but I do know Russian is incredibly difficult and probably not worth learning just to read 1 or a few books. Every verb has 2 verbs, there are several conjugations for each verb for each tense, they have different tenses (e.g. immediate future) and pronouncing words is difficult. Unless you dedicate 1-2 years full time to learning Russian, you won't be able to understand the book. Then there's the whole cultural influence on mindset and the wordplay (the latter only makes sense if you are a native or extremely fluent).
Just find a better translation. Startpage or google "best Brothers Karamazov" translation and read some reviews then decide on the best obtainable one.

Constance Garnett is a shitty translator. I really enjoyed the Pevear and Voholonsky translation back in high school, but a few months ago I tried the Garnett translation off of Gutenberg and it was just really bad.

I am a native in a similiar slavic language and I hope to not only use it to read a book or two so I'll go with learning the language. Thank you though; any Russian authors you could recommend?

Thank God I'm not a retard then. It's baffling how shit this translation is; $15 bucks down the drain. I'll try the one you've mentioned, thanks.

It's weird though. I thought Garnett did just fine with The Idiot and The Posessed, how did her Brothers K turn out so awful?

Amazing book anon there's a reason it's taught all over the world
Are you too retarded to see the psychological insights and themes playing out with the characters? How far are you? Garnett translation is great

Just off the top of my head one major gripe I had with Garnett's Brothers K is that it completely fucking leaves out Lizaveta's nickname Smirnatchaya. It doesn't even replace it with "stinking". The play on words used to construct Smirnakov's name is therefore completely lost on the reader, as is the significance of any time the characters describe him as "stinking".

Ah thats fair. I didnt know Liza's last name but I read this for a uni course and my professor explained the "stinking" Smernakov. I would have thought that would be something included as a footnote.
