<you write horribly. This is like really bad fan-fiction>

<This is terrible, like really bad fan-fiction>

<This appalling fan-fiction is so bad, it's like really bad fan-fiction made love to E.L.James and when the resulting hellspawn vomited, OP ate and regurgitated it onto the page I read.>

While it seems to be insult-for-creative-works de jour, sometimes it is hard to tell whether your critics are right, or whether they're just retards with no talent of their own, so they belittle anyone else. And yet, it isn't an impossible failing to be writing so badly that it sounds like something E.L.James would vomit on a page.

How do you self-critique to avoid this kind of obvious failure? Is it just a numbers game: the more critics, the better evaluation.

The problem I find is that everyone's a writer and no one's a critic. So, for that matter, where do you hang out to get your shit refined?

What makes a memoir stand out? Henry Adams didn't live a very exciting life, other than being a descendant of two presidents, but his "Education of Henry Adams" is frequently cited as among the best memoirs ever. I read it and I was pretty impressed, but I can't really put into words why.

I'm currently going through that one torrent of "The top 100 Sci-fi" audiobooks. There's a couple so far that I've skipped through:

Stranger in a Strange land (When it develops into a weird sex-cult thing, though I like the word Grok)

Anything by Heinlein after Starship Troopers

Some Kurt Vonnegut (Though, I may read Slaughterhouse 5 one day)

The Left Hand of darkness just seemed like Feminism: the book

Lord of Light: I get where he's going with it "could it be fantasy, could it be sci-fi", but wasn't interested.

I think that's it for now. I just got off a binge of 31 of the 41 Discworld books and am looking for something else. (I started the Witcher books in chronological order)

Russian history student that struggles with most of life's options here. Have an opportunity to change for the better but it will require drastic measures. I am looking for a book that embodies such change, as a book can easily be both a guide and a friend for the rough times ahead. The trilogy by Remarque will always have a good place on the shelf for similar qualities.

Or, today, Friday. Of attempting to post yesterday, let us say, I am rather appreciative of the brassy tune: "Baker Street" by Gerry Raferty. Real life and all.

Most recent change of any note was the inclusion of /pdfs/ in the related boards space-bar.

Years ago, we considered linking to it. We were put off by their overt cultural bias that I would call stereotypical /pol/. Between then and now, no other 8Chan book sharing board has made the slightest headway in size and popularity when compared to /pdfs/. Put simply, image-boards are technological generalists, making for extremely poor fileshareing systems. Specialized offsite servers are far better equipped to deal with the unique challenges posed by file-sharing, while image-boards function best by keeping tabs on offsite services. As seen in this light I will give them this, their due: they are trying.

An attenuated bias today remains, but I am not aware of any official barrier to adding literature of any kind on /pdfs/ that does not otherwise impose on the legal framework of the United States.

Two after effects have I noticed:

1. They have politely linked back to us in turn.

2. We have a modest influx of /pol/sters.

We have always had a resident /pol/ poster or two. They have not caused any particular problems, and kept a mellow profile. Personally, the only issue I have with stereotypical /pol/ is the "you're wrong, I'm right, let's fight!" style of posting. This moves things away from literature into the tar-pit of cultural wars.

I am not entirely happy with the potential misstep this may turn out to be, but I am willing to remain tolerant, and continue observing how things play out.

Personal disclaimer: I reside in the upper right quadrant on the green square of ye olde political spectrum, and I have remained there since the classic quiz first appeared. In theory, one might use this to predict my online behavior. In practice, I practice stoicism.

Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

There was a thread on /tv/ with some literally who, I think his name was Sam Hyde, together with the guy from Dagger. He said that something cool is coming soon and it will be good. I got the impression that he's a faggot overall and he won't finish editing the holiday issue ever.

It's too bad that the ponyfags formed that board with /pol/ and not with /lit/. We could try bringing some OC makers here again. /bane/ has less than 20 UIDs, but it's better than when it was fast; I'd add them on the tea plan this time.

I don't think there will be anything very good or very bad that will come out of any particular linking or invitation.

Insofar as MLP is popular it could have added some activity. Fanfiction discussion would be the most probable result, and would not be out of line with the level on which image-boards operate. However, while such discussion exists and can be both lively and surprisingly nuanced, it all takes place on non image-board websites devoted to fanfiction.

I agree nothing much, good or bad, will come from linking /pdfs/. Mostly just more of 8Chan.

So, I'm having a hard time remembering the title or author to this book I read sometimes between 2006-2008. It was from a local library I'm not longer near. It was a new issue in hardcover so I assume it was first published around that time.

All I remember is a vague recollection of the cover art having some sort of modern special forces soldier.

As for content it was definitely geared towards adults. I recall the plot being of a former American soldier moving to a village in Georgia (Country) and buying an estate there which including what amounted to serfs. Once there he basically started a harem of girls he was "buying" from the local whore houses. All the while having some sort of insatiable lust towards a specific girl he was never able to bang.

What seems like a subplot to me is that he was equipping and training his serfs into a private army.

Sorry for the vagueness and I appreciate any help.

Oh and I got the feeling that it was a sequel to another book by the same author or at least a continuation of a story with a character from a prior book.
