I need to read a novel in the genre of 'social realism' for a school assignment, it's something I've never really touched and need some advice in order to find something decent.

I took a glance over on cuckchan's /lit/ wikia for suggestions but they don't seem to have a sorting system for what I'm looking for, but maybe I'm just doing it wrong.

Thanks for the quick reply, seems pretty interesting. Putting it on the list for potential books.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago. Read the one volume abridged version if you don't have time to read the three volumes.

Sounds interesting, especially the time period but I'm not sure if I'll like the format of 'letter exchange'. Might take a closer look.

I've been wanting to read and learn a bit more about the horrors of communism, this might be a good one as well.

I will probably not have time to read three volumes, we have about a month of reading time in front of us.

Thanks again for the recommendation, I eventually decided on this book as The Loser's was not translated to my language (which was a must for the assignment) and the The Gulag Archipelago did not have its abridged version translated.

I would probably not have chosen Poor Folk otherwise since I'm generally not a fan of romance and the 'letter exchange' used to tell the story didn't really appeal to me.

But I'm happy that I in the end did choose this book, I really enjoyed it and I think it opened my eyes to different kinds of literature than I've previously read.

I'll probably read The Gulag Archipelago unabridged at some point simply because the subject interests me.

>politically illiterate American don't know what communism is

sage

also Solzhenitsyn is a big fat liar and a meme of 80s USSR. If you want to know about live in Stalin's GULAGs go read Varlam Shalamov https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varlam_Shalamov
