If you're not familiar with Discordianism, you're probably wondering what the hell this board is all about, so I'm going to lay things straight so you can get your bearings amongst the confusion.

Long story short, Discordianism is a religion that started in the early 60's based around the ancient Greek Goddess of Chaos, Confusion, and Discord. Starting religions was a popular hobby back then, so a couple of guys got together, made their own holy text, passed it around, and many people had great fun with it.

You should probably read the Principia yourself, but the basic point is that Chaos is the ultimate creative power behind everything. Chaos consists of Order and Disorder, which may or may not be social constructs. There is no single message of importance to the Principia Discordia, but it is quite an enjoyable read. Any individual may feel free to interpret it in any way they wish. You may even ignore it altogether.

It differs per board owner, but I'd say yes, join the Society and find your sect. It's all up to you what you want to do. The Discordian Society is entirely decentralized, making it possible for you to make your own sect or join in on anothers' beliefs and projects. If you are curious to find out more about Discordianism, it is not advised to use the internet to do so, and certainly not the first or second thing you find on Google. This board is a place to discuss your findings.

In the year 1166 BC, a man by the name of Greyface decided that life had to be seriously considered. From that point on, anyone which believes in the division of Disorder and Order within Chaos and chooses one over the other is regarded as bearing the Curse of Greyface. In reality there are no divisions in Chaos, you can't cut it in half like a pie. Within the Discordian Society there is however a lot of hypocrisy, thus POEE decided to put a positive spin on Chaos by dividing it into the creative and the destructive, you don't have to follow anyone's reasonings, but you should beware and follow your own mind. Greyface is thus now a buzzword for any one person that decides that Disorder > Order or Order > Disorder. Both are false, they either take themselves too serious, or not serious enough.

And all the while, everyone wants to breathe, and no-one can breathe, and many say, “We will breathe later," and most do not die, because they are already dead.

What is REALITY?
1. What you think of as REALITY is a collection of ideas and beliefs aboutREALITY. Many of the ideas you have about REALITY come from the
culture in which you were raised and have accumulated haphazardly over
time.
2. This, in itself, is not a problem. The problem is in forgetting point number
1. When you forget point 1, you mistake your ideas about reality for being
REALITY itself. Of this, it has been said ‘the menu is not the meal’. Please

3. People who ‘eat the menu’ frequently become confused and annoyed when

filtration, and distortion, before interpretation. Interpretation is what happens
when information meets your ‘beliefs’.
6. For no good reason, we call this composite of Belief & Biological Limits THE
BLACK IRON PRISON and is a metaphor about existence. It means that
there is very little you can do about biology; however, you can choose what
becomes part of your beliefs. (Always keeping point 1 in mind).

7. Each person exists within their own, unique BIP ‘cell’. The cell is composed of
the following:
a) Biological limits – these are largely unchangeable. b) Belief systems –
these are highly changeable. Because of (a) the BIP cell cannot be escaped.
Because of (b) your life experience, your ‘cell’, can be altered drastically.
This is what we try to call ‘reconstruction’.
8. A life long commitment to continual reconstruction is known, ironically, as
‘The Jail Break’. Reconstruction is HARD WORK.
9. The collection of beliefs, thoughts, notions etc that form your cell are all
equally VALID, though none are TRUE in the sense that they “are” REAL-
ITY. However, some beliefs and ideas are more useful than others in specific
situations. It is up to the individual to decide which beliefs and ideas they
should employ in a given situation.
10. Some people believe that the term BLACK IRON PRISON is dark, bleak,
depressing and even frightening. If you prefer, use the term GOLDEN
SPHERE of POSSIBILITY (GSP) instead. It means exactly the same thing
as BIP and all points still apply.
11. BIP (or GSP) can be philosophical antidote to dogmatism.

/eris/ (like /r/discordian) puts Discordianism in a heavily centralized position, which is heavily hypocritical when it comes to the Discordian Hierarchy.
Now since hypocrisy is a huge part of Discordianism, I'll let it slide, but don't make the same mistake twice!

Philosophy Thread
Hi /eris/. Let's talk philosophy. The first thing I'd like to talk about involves the Cortical Homunculus.

The brain is responsible for managing input from the body, but not all body parts are equally represented. The Cortical/ Sensory Homunculus is a visual representation of how sensitive each body part is to stimulation (how many nerves it has) and, as shown, the face and hands are disproportionately sensitive. Interestingly enough, our unique opposable thumb is one of the most over-represented parts of the body.
Because of this high sensitivity, we pay a large amount of conscious attention to these areas of the body. Much time is spend screwing up the face just so, or trying to figure out what to do with our hands when we're just standing around doing nothing. Our hands and faces are highly sensitive and we pay a high amount of attention to them.
What I would like to discuss is this: How are sensitivity and consciousness related? Why are we so sensitive and so conscious of these two very small regions?
Furthermore, is it beneficial for these areas to be so small and, likewise, for the physical "spread" of our consciousness to be small? Or is this merely because of the ease of physical defense of our sensitive faces with our adept hands? Would a human with a mouth on his chest, eyes nearer the top of head, and ears on his shoulders be less capable NOT because of physical effects, but because of the increased physical "spread" of his consciousness required? (Although consolidation of senses near the brain allows for high bandwidth and low response time, which is clearly beneficial)

Some things need order and procedure to function effectively and smoothly. One such thing is the current expansion project at my workplace. My wife and I are in the process of buying the business from the old guy who owns it, let's call him Arthur.
Well, Arthur is wanting to get everything in place ready for when we take over, but is rushing into decisions without consulting us. I understand he doesn't have to tell us anything until our signatures are on the paper, but a 'heads up' that stuff is happening so I can get prepared is better than having to retroactively work around the ill-thought out rush-jobs with little to no notice…
We've just had a small addition to the store room built - would have been nice to have the floor concreted and the materials for the interior of the new area in place ready to use, but no. I will be carrying everything through the shop instead. Thanks, Arthur.
I also need to create (with a hammer) a doorway into the new part so we've been trying to reduce the amount of stock so there's less to move or cover, but Arthur keeps double-ordering stuff. As a result, I haven't been able to get close to that wall for two weeks…
Oh, and Arthur has arranged for a new chiller unit to be fitted this week, so everything else needs shuffling around to fit…

Hofstadter, and the nature of consciousness
What do y'all know about Douglas Hofstadter? I've recently been studying "Godel Escher Bach" with my ladyfran, and I'm trying to blast through "I Am A Strange Loop", but alas, I am cursed with Work. How do y'all feel about his conception of the self as a complex symbol that lives not just in one mind, but potentially several? And, I mean, just general discussion about consciousness and what that entails.
/eris/ Movie Night?
Maybe we should have an /eris/ movie night and show mindfuck movies. I've compiled a straw poll here:
Also feel free to suggest bumper music to provide padding. It's best to start the stream early with bumpers so everyone know it's live, and to place at least one song between movies so people can catch a bathroom/coffee/smoke break. /ebola/ Movie Night is sticking to the /monster/ format with a 30 minute break between the second and third movies, but we don't have to do that if it doesn't make sense. Maybe 15 minutes would be more appropriate, or perhaps with the bumpers between films already, we don't need an extra long one there. Perhaps ten minutes between every film? It's all open for debate.
