/monster/ movie night was fairly successful by almost any measure, and it occurred to me that maybe we should do one of our own – on a different night of course. I'd like to ask some opinions of the Ebolites:

♠ What genre should we draw from? I was thinking movies related to pandemics or at least with the threat of one, but certainly if you have another proposal, make it.

♥ How many movies? Four like the /monster/ nights? If so, should we go for two B-movies and two tryhard movies?

♦ More to the point, what movies? Here's a list I've started, feel free to propose more.

♣ The Andromeda Strain

♣ Twelve Monkeys

♣ I Am Legend

♣ Outbreak

♣ Pandemic

♣ World War Z

Finally, if we do this, should it be a Saturday night like the other?

I recommend Contagion over World War Z. It's a proper virus movie and there's a scene that takes place on a bus I ride regularly!

Oh, and Gwyneth Paltrow's face gets peeled off!

I was planning to collect any and all suggestions and then start a poll. Depending on what we decided in terms of B vs. tryhard ratio, the movies to be screened would be selected accordingly. There will be at least one B movie, and at least one tryhard movie. The other two are up for grabs.

The only thing I would decide (assuming I'm the one streaming them, which is more likely than not) is what order to show them in. I'd probably place the top vote-getter third – late enough to make sure everyone has time to get there, but before people start peeling off from exhaustion.

The good news: I have acquired all six movies on the list. The bad news: I am unable to acquire any B movies. "Dead Space" is one I was trying for.

If anyone knows of a bretty gud sort of virus movie and where to get a copy for screening, lemme know.

They're not really viruses, but they're pretty b movie.

♠ There are also miniseries that fit the bill, though much longer than a movie:

♥ The Stand (very long)

♦ Andromeda Strain from 2008 (3 hours)

Actually I don't have the 1970s movie version of Andromeda, I only have the mini-series. I don't think the length is a big problem, it would just count as two movies.

I got my hands on "Dead Space". Yeah, we gotta have at least one B movie, and this is probably it (or one of them).

Now grabbing "Ebola Syndrome", described as follows:

• A restaurant employee wanted for murder contracts Ebola by raping a woman in South Africa and starts an outbreak there and in Hong Kong when he returns home.

Wish me luck!

So here's where we stand for movie options:

Already in my possession

Smallpox (2002): In April 2002, more than two decades after a massive international effort that was meant to have rid the world of smallpox forever, the dreaded killer disease returns with a vengeance. An unknown terrorist, who somehow obtained a sample traceable to the former Soviet bioweapons program, deliberately infects himself and walks around New York City.

The Andromeda Strain (2008): A crack team of top scientists work feverishly in a secret, state-of-the-art laboratory to discover what has killed the citizens of a small town and learn how this deadly contagion can be stopped.

Twelve Monkeys (1995): In a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.

I Am Legend (2007): Years after a plague kills most of humanity and transforms the rest into monsters, the sole survivor in New York City struggles valiantly to find a cure.

Outbreak (1995): Extreme measures are necessary to contain an epidemic of a deadly airborne virus. But how extreme, exactly?

Dead Space (1991): A deadly virus attacks the crew of a Saturn space station.

C'mon, we gotta do this one.

Likely Obtainable:

Ebola Syndrome (1996): A restaurant employee wanted for murder contracts Ebola by raping a woman in South Africa and starts an outbreak there and in Hong Kong when he returns home.

Possibly Obtainable:

I'd appreciate help on these if someone else has them.

Anthrax (2001): When cattle mysteriously start dying of anthrax in a small Alberta ranching community, an RCMP officer tries to keep the peace as ranchers lay the blame on a local agricultural research center. A reporter encourages the angry ranchers - led by the Mountie's mother-in-law - to stage a sit-in at the research center. When an eccentric old rancher dies after being exposed to a deadly strain of anthrax, the protesters are quarantined. No one notices that the reporter has disappeared - along with several vials of the deadly bacteria. The RCMP officer begins his own investigation, gleaning information from a U.S. government agent. He finds himself racing against time to recover the stolen anthrax.

Pandemic (2009): On a quiet night on the streets of the Big City, two members of a radical environmentalist group (Green Earth Terra Movement) come across a sickly girl who appears to be running away from the local hospital. Always wary of large institutions, they take her to their local hideout instead of back to the hospital for treatment. There, the girl is found to be suffering from several strains of deadly, drug-resistant diseases, quite possibly terminally infecting everyone present at the hideout. Matt, the iconic idealistic environmentalist, is at odds with Kyson, their cold de facto leader, over what to do with the disease-ridden girl. As they plan and execute their next moves, fate turns a hard hand on these young idealists.

——————

So we should have seven options available, of which we need either three (if Andromeda makes it) or four.

Whoops, forgot one. Already in my possession.

World War Z (2013): United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself.

Just watched the 70s version of Andromeda. It's very much a 70s movie. I'm sure the computer effects seemed hi-tech at the time…

With four responses in:

1. Twelve Monkeys (1995) - 3 votes (19%)

2. Dead Space (1991) - 3 votes (19%)

3. The Andromeda Strain (2008) - 3 votes (19%)

4. Ebola Syndrome (1996) - 2 votes (13%)

5. I Am Legend (2007) - 2 votes (13%)

6. Pandemic (2009) - 2 votes (13%)

I started running my download of "Pandemic". It's corrupt (or I just missed chunks), so add that to the list of things I need if it wins enough votes. If it's merely tied for fourth, it'll get dropped for practical reasons.

Also, this will probably have to be repeated a month later with new movies. I'll recycle the list that didn't make it and add some new ones (at least as many as we burn).

Like these:

• 28 days later

• The Omega Man

• The Happening

• The Thaw

• Carriers

Gᴏᴏᴅ Nᴇᴡs: I have acquired "Ebola Syndrome", "Contagion", and "Doomsday", so we have enough movies for TWO /ebola/ movie nights at least. Also I'm grabbing The Stand, which is six one-hour episodes and thus could constitute a night in itself.

The voting so far:

2. The Andromeda Strain (2008): 7 votes (16%)

3. Outbreak (1995): 6 votes (14%)

5. Pandemic (2009): 6 votes (14%)

6. Twelve Monkeys (1995): 5 votes (11%)

OK I'm forced to move the date. Saturday, July 4 is, well, July 4. I won't get many Americans watching. July 11 is /monster/ movie night. That leaves the earliest good date as July 18. July 6 is a Monday night, which means a lot of people won't be able to stay up for it.

I apologize for any confusion.

No, I forgot to account for Daylight Saving Time. It's actually 2200 GMT, which means an hour BEFORE midnight in the +1 time zone.

However, it has been delayed to two weeks from tomorrow (July 18). Enjoy the /monster/ movie night in the meantime. The last one was pretty fun.

Also, the results are in, and it was very close.

T1. Ebola Syndrome (1996) - 8 votes (14%)

T1. Outbreak (1995) - 8 votes (14%)

T1. The Andromeda Strain (2008) - 8 votes (14%)

T4. Twelve Monkeys (1995) - 7 votes (13%)

T4. Dead Space (1991) - 7 votes (13%)

T4. I Am Legend (2007) - 7 votes (13%)

T4. Pandemic (2009) - 7 votes (13%)

Since The Andromeda Strain counts as two "movies", taking the top three gets us a movie night. The 7-vote candidates will go back in the pool for next time.

I think I'll probably show them in exactly the order shown above: Ebola Syndrome, Outbreak, intermission. Then both halves of The Andromeda Strain.

This week I hosted an "afterparty" to /monster/ movie night, showing the original "Total Recall" and "Little Shop of Horrors", both by crowd choice.

I've contributed quite a bit to /mu/, including posting files in response to request threads as well as being on almost every Autistic Rage Festival release. It's not the shitposter, it's that nobody stepped up to flick the shitposter on the nose. Thus the only conclusion I can draw is that my invitation is being met with anything from polite indifference to hostility. It's not like they've never heard of me.

You've now been formally invited, but anyone can come. There's a difference between being uninvited (quite possibly because I didn't get that far down the board list), and actually being unwanted.

I tried /mu/, all I got was "you're fucking autistic" from a shitposter and no contrary posts. I've contributed plenty over there and if that's what I get for thanks, fuck 'em.

Also invited were:

>>>metal/

>>>/tg/

>>>/b/

I think the /metal/ invitation was too late to do any good, but they didn't get all butthurt about it either.

I'm following a very simple plan. Post once, bump once a day or so later (unless it's /b/ or something fast like that). If nobody answers, let it die. If the only response is shitposting, let it die. If there is any apparent interest, bump often enough to keep the thread alive until toward the end when reminders are sent more frequently.

00d96d No.26830

>>26829

I asked where people "came from", and not one of them said /b/, so I don't think that was a major problem. As expected, the shitposting mostly came from /pol/acks.

Snarking and riffing on the films themselves is not shitposting, and is both expected and desired. Even "watch the Jew get cucked by the whore" was at least tangentially related (to Outbreak). The Andromeda Strain deserved to be torn apart, and not surprisingly, it was, but it was surprisingly full of attempts to redpill the viewer (like mentioning the NSA was watching all communications). This did not need to be diverted into a bunch of "The Jews did this!" bullshit.

In any case, I see no reason to believe that inviting /b/tards is a serious problem. The fact that threads 404 so quickly over there is reason enough to post the message late, and this in turn leaves little time to organize brigading. Also, you have to register to post to the chat, which tends to reduce the shitposting slightly (or a lot, there's no way to know for sure).

OK guise, we need more activity on the poll for the next /ebola/ movie night, tentatively scheduled for August 22:

http://strawpoll.me/4970545

I process the movies well in advance to roll the credits faster, make sure the audio is using all of its possible dynamic range, there is no hard-coded letterboxing, and other such things, so if things remain in a state with no clear fourth pick as the date approaches, I will not restrict myself exclusively to the remaining high-ranking options, but reserve the right to just pick something that I think fits.

Also, this event will have the program run twice as has become my norm lately. In addition, I'll re-run Ebola Syndrome before the official start time because based Kai is alpha, and is the hero we need.

Advertising will also be much more limited. I'm tired of the shitposting and abuse that comes with these announcements on so many boards. The distribution list currently looks like this:

• /b/ (at the last minute): how can anything be off-topic in /b/?

• /film/: We're still showing movies, right?

• /tv/: Close enough to /film/ for my tastes.

• /k/: Because it's unlikely I'll have four movies with zero weaponry or explosions.

• /bane/: Because there's always a movie worthy of shitposting over, right?

• /monster/: Specific request from the board owner.

Other boards will be added only if one or more films is directly of interest to them, and some won't be notified under any circumstances. This now includes /intl/, where I have made myself persona non grata by going full flame mode on critics.

Disclaimer: this post and the subject matter and contents thereof - text, media, or otherwise - do not necessarily reflect the views of the 8kun administration.

00d96d No.27105

Oh, this is the (rather convoluted, walk-the-dinosaurish) flame I came up with to insult a shitposter which resulted in the nuking of my thread on /intl/. I post it here for your amusement. You may use it as copypasta if you wish, and even modify it to your needs.

The Legend of Wee King Todd

There was once an enterprising individual with a condition much like Ηotwheels has, but much too early in history to have the opportunity to work with computers. From very early in his life, he became known as Wee Todd because of his diminutive size and utterly non-threatening appearance.

Unfortunately for Wee Todd, social services then also aren't what they are now, so he had to work at something, or starve. He tried his hand at many things, telling fortunes, begging, and picking pockets being perhaps the least humiliating among them. However, it was during his stint as a carnival sideshow freak that he caught a break.

You see, Wee Todd was not stupid, and having no physical attributes to work with, he read a lot. Despite never having any formal schooling, he became rather well educated for his day, and when he spoke he carried an air of authority. Once he learned to parlay this into a sort of persuasive power, it wasn't long before he was offered a role as the pitchman for various products.

Alas, Wee Todd also had a conscience, and could not endorse products he did not personally believe in. One thing he had no difficulty endorsing was furniture. Just about anything that didn't fall apart under its own weight was good enough to support him, so he was able to pitch such products and still be able to sleep at night.

One thing Wee Todd became known for was wearing velvet and carrying a drum major's "military", which in his hands looked like an enormous mace. This earned him the further appelation of "King". Wee King Todd.

In these days, photography was in its infancy. Anyone wanting a picture taken had to hold perfectly still for several minutes to expose the plate. It just so happened that staying in one place came naturally to Wee King Todd, since he couldn't walk anyhow. He became one of the first professional photographic models in history, eventually having a small couch made for him to pose upon, which became almost as iconic as his velvet robe and his mace. Everyone knew Wee King Todd and his royal couch, even if they'd never seen him in person. He was on so many photographers' promotional plates that he became famous in a way that he never anticipated.

All the while, his love of learning never faded. He continued to read everything he could get his hands on, and even wrote a few papers that made it into prestigious journals. The nearby institution of higher learning, the University of Redlands, decided to cash in on his fame, awarding him an honorary doctorate.

For a man with brittle bones, Wee King Todd did rather well for himself, surviving into his ninth decade before passing away peacefully in his sleep. Sadly, there was one break he couldn't catch. He couldn't get the front page all to himself because of the announcement that the first chimp-human hybrid had survived gestation and had been born that day. That chimp-human hybrid was you. Your picture was front page material, and it ran under the headline announcing Wee King Todd's passing – respectfully off to the right, but still above the fold.

That's right, even from the day you came into this world, everyone already knew the truth, printed in black and white for all to see. For there was your shit-flinging ape face, right below the banner text.

U. R. SOFA KING "WEE TODD" DEAD.

First, I'll run another Afterparty movie for the next session. While dependent on any delays in the /grim/ program, the 15 minute break should start around 0742 UTC (or 12:42 am Pacific), which puts the movie start at 0757 UTC (or 12:57 am Pacific). This movie will be Halloween III: Season of the Witch.

Because hardly anyone showed up for the first warm-up movie this week, I'm only running two this Saturday afternoon. I have a special feature in store for the last (handoff) bumper though!

All times UTC:

• 2200 - Music begins

• 2226 - The Shining (1980)

• 0105 - The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

• 0245 - Souper Spoopy Speshul Feeture!

including 15 minute breaks between all films.

ConnectCast is down for everyone, as in the entire site is completely offline.

Even if it comes back up tonight, I'm canceling the showing of Halloween III: Season of the Witch because I don't feel like waiting to see what happens. If they're still down when it's time to stream the Saturday afternoon movies (3 PM Pacific, 2200 UTC), then those will be cancelled as well.

Change of plans!

>>>/grim/ and >>>/nacht/ are trading shows for Saturday. All this does is change the channel you need to load, the movies will be unchanged (times are being corrected).

At 3 pm Pacific (2200 UTC), go to http://connectcast.tv/n1x_ for:

2200 UTC Music starts.

2226 UTC The Shining (1980)

0105 UTC The Rocky Horror Picture Show

0245 UTC Sooper Sekrit Speshul Feeture!

Then at 8 pm Pacific (0300 UTC Sunday), join me at http://connectcast.tv/Mal-2 for:

0300 UTC Halloween

0446 UTC Friday the 13th

0637 UTC A Nightmare on Elm Street

0823 UTC Halloween III: The Season of the Witch

1000 UTC Program Ends

Except for the hand-off section, there are 15 minute intermissions between all films. The Sooper Sekrit Speshul Feeture is the intermission, so if you really need to freshen up between films, you're going to miss it.

I will be running all four 90-minute episodes of the mini-series The Stand, on consecutive nights from Tuesday, October 27 to Friday, October 30. The start time is 6 pm Pacific (0100 UTC, so technically it's Wednesday through Saturday by that clock).

The last episode will complete about 25 minutes before >>>/grim/ Modern Foreign Horror night.

When:

Every night from 2015/10/27 to 2015/10/30 at 6 pm Pacific (0100 UTC of the next day).

2015/10/27: Part One

2015/10/28: Part Two

2015/10/28: Part Three

2015/10/30: Part Four

Why:

What better way to ride out the last week of October than a series about the end of the world? Ebby would mostly approve (not enough blood perhaps).

File: 1446191216874.png (273.42 KB,640x270,64:27,Alien-The_Chestburster.png)

Due to a scheduling conflict, n1x_ will be unable to start Modern Foreign Horror until 10:11 pm Pacific, Friday October 30. (That's 0511 UTC, on the morning of Saturday, October 31.) I was intending to run a film after his set, but instead I will run one before his set, at the original 8 pm (0300 UTC) start time.

So here's the new plan:

Start at http://connectcast.tv/Mal-2 at 0300 UTC (8 pm Pacific)

I will show Alien, then as the out-bumper, I will re-run Thriller.

Switch channel to http://connectcast.tv/n1x_ at 0511 UTC (10:11 pm Pacific)

n1x_ will then show the three Modern Foreign Horror films. I don't know what has been chosen, so I cannot provide you start times for anything but the first one.

00d96d No.27674

This is the backup plan if n1x_ doesn't make it back in time:

• If he's not ready to go by the end of my first bumper, I will run two more movies – Pitch Black and Slither. I cannot say if/when the Modern Foreign Horror presentation will be re-scheduled.

• If he does make it back in time to take over after the first film, the two films named above will be run prior to tomorrow's Modern American Horror presentation.

Well, it looks like n1x_ will not be in a position to take over, having told me his earliest ready time would be around 10:30 PDT and we'd already be committed to the second movie by then. Therefore we're going to the backup plan, which is:

http://connectcast.tv/Mal-2 throughout

8:00 PDT (0300 UTC) Alien

10:11 PDT (0511 UTC) Pitch Black

12:13 PDT (0713 UTC) Slither

ConnectCast has failed again, just like it did two weeks ago – with SIX MINUTES to go in the first movie. Last time it came back after about 40 minutes so I'll give it up to an hour (assuming anyone stays around).

However, I will probably drop Slither from the schedule and only show two movies because of the delay, assuming we get back on the air at all – and this will be my last stream until/unless I can find a more reliable hosting site. I've fucking had it with ConnectCast.

Not unless someone else does them. Mal-2 stopped because connectcast shat out on him (and other movie night streamers) too many times. And because he had to outright record an entire block of movies and buffers, every time.

Don't worry, I feel ya, those were good times.
