1. What you think of as REALITY is a collection of ideas and beliefs about
REALITY. Many of the ideas you have about REALITY come from the
culture in which you were raised and have accumulated haphazardly over
time.
2. This, in itself, is not a problem. The problem is in forgetting point number
1. When you forget point 1, you mistake your ideas about reality for being
REALITY itself. Of this, it has been said ‘the menu is not the meal’. Please
refrain from eating the menu.
3. People who ‘eat the menu’ frequently become confused and annoyed when
other people insist on seeing REALITY in a different way. All that truly dif-
fers are their ideas and beliefs about REALITY.
4. Beliefs are just thoughts you keep having.
5. No living being is capable of perceiving all of REALITY, as all senses of
perception are limited. Humans can only see, hear, smell, taste and feel within
certain parameters. Information entering our senses undergoes compression,
filtration, and distortion, before interpretation. Interpretation is what happens
when information meets your ‘beliefs’.
6. For no good reason, we call this composite of Belief & Biological Limits THE
BLACK IRON PRISON and is a metaphor about existence. It means that
there is very little you can do about biology; however, you can choose what
becomes part of your beliefs. (Always keeping point 1 in mind).
00018
7. Each person exists within their own, unique BIP ‘cell’. The cell is composed of
the following:
a) Biological limits – these are largely unchangeable. b) Belief systems –
these are highly changeable. Because of (a) the BIP cell cannot be escaped.
Because of (b) your life experience, your ‘cell’, can be altered drastically.
This is what we try to call ‘reconstruction’.
8. A life long commitment to continual reconstruction is known, ironically, as
‘The Jail Break’. Reconstruction is HARD WORK.
9. The collection of beliefs, thoughts, notions etc that form your cell are all
equally VALID, though none are TRUE in the sense that they “are” REAL-
ITY. However, some beliefs and ideas are more useful than others in specific
situations. It is up to the individual to decide which beliefs and ideas they
should employ in a given situation.
10. Some people believe that the term BLACK IRON PRISON is dark, bleak,
depressing and even frightening. If you prefer, use the term GOLDEN
SPHERE of POSSIBILITY (GSP) instead. It means exactly the same thing
as BIP and all points still apply.
11. BIP (or GSP) can be philosophical antidote to dogmatism.

Weirdest thing is knowing nobody can help you find your mind but you.

I hope this board takes off; I think about these sorts of things a lot.

I've been reading some Krishnamurti lately, and would highly recommend The First and Last Freedom.

I've never heard of it; this is all new to me, so I appreciate the recommendation and will be sure to read up on it.

Really, this might sound weird, but some of the more philosophical lyrics by the artist Eyedea (mostly on the album The Many Faces of Oliver Hart) illustrate views with which I identify, and do not find elsewhere. My first time listening to it was that great feeling when you're someone gets exactly what you've been thinking your whole life.

Holy fuck Bottle of Dreams was amazing, and that entire album is pretty fucking good. Thanks for that.

And come to think of it, you might enjoy Black Iron Prison as well. It talks about the 'prison' of physical/ spiritual/ mental limits that everybody lives in, with the floors/ walls/ bars being things like where you're born, what you believe, what you don't want to believe, etc

Thanks for recommending BIP.
Stayed reading it, and am finding many parts enjoyable, though I am wary when presented with more people agreeing with my opinion, as is prudent.
I read the 2007 version; I'm not sure if there are others.
I really want to do some copy editing on the thing.

>And that’s exactly how We want it! Tired little sheep kept running by the faithful hounds all day long until they are too tired and submit, they break. Who are We? Nowadays, practically everyone…your boss, your leaders, the media at large, the people responsible for American Idol/X-Factor/fill-in-pointless waste of music reality-TV program here….a huge faceless confederacy constantly trying to sway you this way and that, turn you into a follower of anything.

The idea of a "We" controlling things, of the world ultimately being under humanity's control, while comforting, feels like wishful thinking to me. (This is partially addressed in Can you feel it coming?)

The Parable of the Gong was a well-articulated explanation of something I myself haven't been able to explain so concisely.

As an aside, I hope /eris/ remains centered on philosophical discussion of this sort, and doesn't turn into /fringe/.

>The idea of a "We" controlling things, of the world ultimately being under humanity's control, while comforting, feels like wishful thinking to me.
You can really only control yourself, and then only partially at best. People take offense at hearing that we're civilized apes, but there's quite a lot to be said for that. I would much rather be a civilized ape than a civilized sheep, for instance. And I agree that the world being under our control is wishful thinking, but if not the world, then certainly society is.

One day it struck me how profound it is that everything man-mad is there because someone wanted it to be there. Someone somewhere decided exactly what color the street lights would be, and someone else somewhere else decided their fittings, all up until someone decided where in the earth they would be bolted. Someone decided how wide the streets would be, and then someone else drove the great machine that put it there.

Everything in society is the way it is because someone wanted it to be that way.

It all depends on who posts here, really. /fringe/ is interesting but a bit too fringe, although some of the music there is great and I just found The Science of Breath while lurking there, so there's certainly something positive to be said for the board.

Completely forgot about that album. Super good, going to give it a re-listen today.

>>75 I'd have to agree with the whole "civilized ape v. sheep" thing here. Apes have much more agency in my opinion.

Also…
>Everything man-mad is there because >someone wanted it to be there

I second this, it's all very surreal when you think about it. I've been using this framework in regards to the Internet, as opposed to a city. With a city, it has a level of order and purpose that the Internet doesn't have (ie the color of the street lamps were decided via committee/corruption/violence which had their own idea of why that color is best for their own goals). Meanwhile, the Internet is just brain goop and porn, largely rudderless: there are too many people at play to say it has any sort of point in mind. As order is largely a force that wants to spread itself like a virus, I wouldn't be surprised if we end up seeing a ton of government documentation in 20-50 years saying that the government was dealing with the Internet in the same way it dealt with the counter-culture of the 60's: a level of infiltration. Either that or I'm paranoid or out of the loop on this one.

So by that logic, if you can control your own thoughts and beliefs, you can control your reality.

Maybe our thoughts actually come from someone or something else.

Exactly, solipsism is real…we just don't happen to be the conscious one. When you start seeing your own strings it's easy to see everyone else's.

About eighteen years ago, I was floating in a pool somewhere in the Florida Keys. Suddenly the sky started to fill with glowing magenta pinpoints in a regular array, spaced two or three moon-widths apart. This took a few seconds, after which the dots connected to each other with incredibly thin but quite visible lines, much like graph paper but with more discernible intersections. I contemplated the meaning of this for a bit, and must have consulted my pineal gland, because suddenly I heard Her voice in my head. She said: This grid is order. Take away the grid, (and the grid abruptly vanished, without the after-image that would have existed if it had been physically present) and the sky is still there.

I have pondered the meaning of this revelation ever since. Was She trying to tell me that Order is something that is imposed by an observer in an attempt to comprehend that which he or she observes, but not inherently part of the system? Was She trying to tell me that the sky doesn't care if we understand it or not? Was she trying to point out that despite looking smooth, the sky is actually a highly chaotic and dynamic system?

I still don't know. I will probably never know for certain. And that is beautiful.

Hail Eris.

Spirits can tell how powerful you think they are. If you perceive them as more powerful than yourself, they perceive this as love. If you perceive them as less powerful than yourself, but you actually do love them, they perceive this also as love. Either way, it is ambrosia. It empowers them.

They can perceive more than that, but their sense of the love radiating off of you can blind them. Spirits whose power exceeds their sensitivity can drift into tyranny without knowing the corrosion of their own nature, particularly when faced with a mortal who knows them in their grandest guise. For cannot the endless admiration be felt? The whole resonant power of the being before them is raised in exultation..! But it is the mere conviction of power, and not always a truly positive response.

The difference between fear and love is a distinction drawn more intuitively on Earth than on some worlds. Numerous are the spirits drawn more to fear than love in truth, for they detest to be thought weak more than they truly care if they are loved.

Eris never will drift into tyranny, or perhaps better said her power is innately tyrannical, but certainly growing greater cannot make her focus shift; for her particular kind of tyranny is to find change potentials and empower people recklessly within them. Were she willing to empower only saints she would enter into heaven, for it is not her own will that creates the suffering of her renown. Rather it is that she empowers saints and scoundrels alike and sets that sets her roaming the abyss. Eris loves questionable people for questionable reasons. I shouldn't need to tell Discordians how to gain the favor of Eris, but among your more ordinary rituals you should be very certain that you won't recognize Eris in your dreams. Chaos Thrives Unnoticed.

Some tricks of spirit work on earth, but I can't tell if it is wiser to use them benevolently or not at all. I can't tell here how anything moves. I have the barest hint of my former sight and fire - what happened? Why is there so much pain in this place?
