Let's have a thread about dumb shit turning smart (or vice versa!)
I'm particularly fond of the idea that planets and life itself are all just bits of starstuff that happened to react in such a way as to happen to be able to turn into self-sustaining and self-replicating stuff, so the concept of genetic algorithms is absolutely fascinating to me.
What fascinates you?

Have you read Godel Escher Bach? It's about consciousness rising out of base matter using "strange loops". Formal systems that self reference turn into tangled heirarchies; their self-reference is the beginning stage of consciousness according to Hofstadter.

Have you seen my thread about Hofstadter and "I Am A Strange Loop"? He's done some really interesting thinking on the idea of consciousness itself, reaching to a very far out point. He make some statements that it's really hard not to just knee-jerk away from, but he's got a solid foundation to his mode of thought. "I Am A Strange Loop" is far more accessible than GEB; it's not written like a game, or a puzzle, but a man's simple telling of how he thinks thought works. It's pretty deeply moving in parts; he, at one point, references his dead wife and how that influenced his thoughts about consciousness. Strange loop, indeed.
