Probably SegaCD, since you can play it in english. But I prefer the more old school look of PC-88 and MSX. Also, I prefer to use keyboard and type, like other text/graphic adventures.

The SegaCD version was butchered via censoring and there must be translations for the PC-88 and MSX. Also are these two games really just interactive movies or is that a meme.

I'm in the absurdly slow process of modding my Atari 7800. The audio is all static, so I figured there may have been some fuckery in the RF system. The AV mod for the 7800 has you remove the RF system from the board, snip out a few resistors, and pull composite video and audio off of the board itself. Problem is, early eighties soldering. Shit may as well be welded to the board, because my attempts at removing the solder so I can pull the RF shield off of the board have been futile. My solder vacuum isn't getting anything off of the board, and my iron is having a hard time melting the solder due to the RF shield being a giant fucking heat sink. Even solder wick is useless. Maybe when my funds get sorted, I'll get a better soldering station and more flux.

If you want PS1 games just get a PS1 and either swap disc or modchip it. I have a modchipped one and it's great, the only pain is to get good video out of it you need RGB (That said the video that comes off that RGB is fucking beautiful).

Is there a mod or a third party cart out there that would allow a CDX to play Japanese Mega CD games? I really don't relish the idea of having to crack open my CDX to install a chip or something or even having to get a whole other Japanese Genesis/CD combo.

The Megadrive won't output the correct colourburst frequency needed to output colour in a composite signal when you do a 50/60hz switch. Additionally it won't output the correct horizontal blank either, and scalers often can't deal with that.

You need to use RGB cables, or if you really want to use composite, you need to add some extra oscillators to generate the proper colourburst whenever you switch.

It is simpler to just buy a Japanese Megadrive. They are very cheap.

Saturn protection was cracked back in the 90s, modchips were common even then. Primarily in Asia, because the Saturn was primarily popular in Asia. The console got its CD drive changed at least once to break modchips too.

The recent "crack" for the protection is actually a reverse engineering of its OS so you can use the expansion port to load games from.

But the actual CD protection was understood decades ago.

Why not just dump the game binary, and then reverse engineer it to find out where the code is that references the optical drive?

Make a launcher for it that patches those parts out of the game and makes them refer to a relative path folder instead. Use OllyDbg, x64Dbg or IDA Pro.

You'll need to trampoline the routines that perform audio events; play, stop, pause, etc, and inject a DLL that plays audio files from the game folder instead.

Someone did this for Heroes 2 and it works fine. CD audio played back from the relative folder as audio files.

Ever OD on nostalgia? Sometimes when I've got the CRT and an old console fired up I find myself sinking into a depression. Old video games are a relic of a better time in history - a time before society collapsed. 10-20 years ago I didn't have to worry about constantly overwhelming propaganda in every single aspect of my life. I could simply enjoy a quality video game. Everything about them just breathes life, the colors were brighter, more vivid - stories were fun and exciting, they could be deep and something you could really get into. The soundtracks were classic and will be remembered for decades to come.

Old video games remind me of a time before everything went to shit and we were on the literal brink of hell.

Hi! I lurk and got curious… What are the best ps1 games that are also on Sega Saturn? Also, what are the worst? I imagine listing the preferred versions would take a while but I recently found out a game I played was superior on the competing console. I most likely will play the other version now but I realize there was a time different console versions REALLY mattered.

I know of only a handful of well written "old" rpgs, Torment, IWDs, BG, Fallouts, but they're the best things I ever experienced. Watching the game industry turn away from in-depth dialogues broke my heart.

I want to make games like these myself one day so I can bring this feeling back to the younger generations.

Back in the day, when I was but a wee lad I didn't see the problem. "Hey, there's room for both", I thought. However, as years pass I'm more and more convinced what really happened is we were robbed of a superior game. It blows my mind that the doomsayers back in the day writing for old school physical gamer mags scoffing at this new direction were right and that my RPG adventure was about to take a nosedive… The antediluvian treant necknbeards tried to warn us, but the gay world didn't listen.

>>5023

Worst part about it is Blizzard can't really be credited with Diablo, since they took over a different company that was in the process of making it. The potential for a great game world and atmosphere was already there, what they introduced was the cancer. Fuck, I'd still love a Diablo: Planescape-type game, even if it wouldn't be the most playable thing ever, meanwhile the hack&slash gameplay introduced by Blizzard aged like shit.

To top it all off they wasted what good Diablos introduced in flavor with D3. I don't think there ever was a bigger loss of capital in gamedev history than that. I remember, while not even a huge fan of Diablo, being blueballed several times by bogus rumors of the game being developed in the 00's. If that game turned out good and innovative (they had ages to plan it out, for fuck's sake, just hire a dedicated writer for a decade) it'd be easy to introduce some new quality of gaming off its back. To introduce some grand scheme. But this is modern, even more deranged Blizzard, so ofc they just fist fuck dead horse assholes to death now, until the IP said horse is attached to spits out the last cent.

When I saw that Fallout 4 was going to add fully voiced protagonists and that Bioware style of choice selection, I knew it would make the writing even worse, and I was right.

In my opinion, most games should do like Baldur's Gate did- have short phrases that are occasionally uttered by the characters, but nothing all that lengthy so you can still have your paragraphs of dialogue if you want.

Have you faggots played Don Doko Don 2? This game is simply amazing, especially for a Famicom title. This is a platformer by Taito on the vein of say the Monster Land series but more straight-forward and platform oriented.

It's the sequel to the original Don Doko Don, which was a forgettable Bubble Bobble/Snow Bros clone which makes this sequel even more impressive. Being a late FC release (it came out in 1992 when the SNES and Genesis were dominating the market) it pushes the hardware to its limits (kinda, maybe not) and it shows.

This game enjoys of

>Beautiful and highly detailed backgrounds that never repeat too much

>Animated yet charming cutscenes that tell a simple story to go along with the game

>Nice, cartoony spritework, for example the hat of your character jumps along in your head as you walk

>Optional minigames to win bonuses

>The stages are anything but boring, certain parts of them like the bridges will start to fall apart if you stay for to long on them

>Your regular weapon, the hammer serves to smash enemies so you can then pick them up to throw around

>Power-ups and collectables

>Music is good enough, never irritating but not very memorable most of the times

So yeah, even if you don't understand japanese it still is a highly enjoyable game so go and play it.

Talk about obscure vidya you've played.

Pic related. Disaster's a neat game where you have to escape a collapsing city and avoid all the natural disasters trying to kill you.

The game doesn't have combat, instead you have to avoid debris and occasionally brace the ground in order to not take damage from tremors, manage how much water you have, and make not to fall and die.

It also had multiple endings, however these just boil down to "which girl did you follow and did you abandon them given the choice?". While not a exceptional game in the slightest, I still enjoyed this game.

This is Amstrad CPC port of Addams Family. I can only compare it to the Amiga version that I briefly played before (which of course has nicer graphics and so on), and it seems like almost two entirely different games. In this version you often have to do some pretty fancy platforming, like for example jumping off a platform onto a ghost that's flying in the middle of the screen above some spikes, to reach a platorm on the other side. Or avoid an enemy (by jumping) on platform at top of screen, while waiting for a small moving platform below to be going in the right direction, so you can jump onto it through a small opening. But if you take it the wrong direction, you get zapped on some spikes on edge of the screen (and needless to say, there are also spikes on the bottom of screen too).

Well I've only seen a small bit of this game so far, and it often seems overwhelmingly unfair at first, but looks to be well-designed, because there's always a solution, although you may have to think about it for a bit. You can pause the game, and get 9 lives, plus 4 continues, so at least there's lots of chances for trial and error, and creative thinking. But it does require a lot of coordination too, and being able to track more than one object at once.

There's other ports too, like NES, but I haven't tried those. This one runs fine in the MESS emulator:

sdlmess cpc6128 -flop1 addamfam.dsk

When it's booted, you can type CAT at the prompt to see disk listing. Or just type RUN"ADDAMS to load the game (terminating quote can be omitted). Then you have to press spacebar at the title screen to load the game, I think, but there's a delay while it's loading from virtual floppy (too bad MESS doesn't show the disk activity light, or I missed that in configuration).

I found the game here:

This is the Sega Master System port of Wonderboy in Monsterland. Originally an arcade game, it was ported to the SMS and the PC Engine/TG16, as well as some home PC's like the Amiga and C64. The PC Engine version was reskinned into a Bikkuriman game(but is very close to the arcade version), and Jaleco ported and reskinned it into Saiyūki World for the Famicom, which was popular enough that the sequel got brought to the US as Whomp'em.

You are on a constant time limit, every time the hourglass flips you lose 1 heart of health. This fucks you worse than you think, since the amount of maximum health you have is tied to your points. You need about 400K to have 10 hearts. The most points you can get is through getting to the end of the level with maximum health. Not only are you getting punished for taking damage from enemies, you are also getting punished for not rushing through. Oh, and there is no way to continue. You die, you better hope you have the revival potion or it's game over.

Your attack hitbox is a tiny little bit in front of you. Some bosses have homing attacks that you just can not dodge. There's a hidden subquest that you really NEED to do to have a reasonable chance of either reaching or beating the final boss, and every door involved in the quest is invisible and only the first one gets pointed out to you. Gold is RNG based, so you never know if you'll have enough money for the upgrades you really need. Not knowing how the shops work and buying the wrong upgrades can make it impossible to get the best equipment in the game. There's an entire level that can be missed if you don't take a certain path.

All that being said, it's a very fun platforming-action/rpgish game. This port is also much easier than the arcade version in terms of bosses. Once you get past the learning curve and stop running into enemies you meant to attack, it's pretty fun. The only part of the game I really didn't like was the final level. Let me tell you about the final level.

The final level is a maze filled with high level enemies everywhere. If you have the Bell item from the hidden subquest, it will let you know when you are taking the right turn. Otherwise, if you have the Ruby or youPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

That's where the series became Metroid-ish. It starts you on a simplified version of the last level from Monsterland, and you have far more health than you could ever have in Monsterland. Once you beat the Dragon(you have to try to lose), then you lose all but 1 heart and turn into a dragon yourself. From there you have to search and platform around for more hearts, gold, equipment, and other upgrades. Not quite as polished as Wonderboy in Monster World, but still a damn fine Metroid-like in it's own right.

Lion King for SNES was hard as heck when I was a kid, but that's mostly becauase of the damn Continues system.

Rayman 1 for PS1 is a nightmare. Literally. Even if I didn't have to deal with the continues system in that game, the level design itself makes traversing each stage a nightmare. It's so difficult.

You'd be hard pressed to find a game released before the mid nineties that wasn't an adventure, rpg, sim or strategy and took more than a couple of hours to beat.

Let's play this on hard. What's some good stuff that takes less than 15 minutes?
