How's about a Quake I thread? What went wrong? What went right? I just started playing it and I'm really enjoying it.

Installed Quake on a retro PC (Pentium II) under Win98SE and the music can't be heard (even though the game reads the music tracks from the CD, which can be seen from the CD drive activity). The music works fine under DOS 6.22 on the same PC. Anyone knows what might be wrong? Graphics performance seems faster under Win98 than under DOS so it would be great to get the music working too.

Ok nevermind, problem solved. It turns out I had to use a DOS mixer program to set volume levels for Quake (the CD audio output channel was all the way down from the DOS mixer's perspective) even though the game was running under Windows. Then again Quake is a 16-bit DOS program, so the solution is plausible (even if confusing).

Oh and fastvid helps immensely, with activated LFB combined writes the game runs as fast under DOS as does under Windows (with the latter probably activating an equivalent performance improvement on graphics driver level).

I noticed that Quake 2/3 engine games somehow insist on using display modes with very high refresh rates like 150 Hz. I don't want to overwork the old CRT monitor with stupidly high refresh rates which are of no use anyway (the computer reaches nowhere near the framerates), just 85 Hz (which is set in dxdiag, and which other games follow except for Q2/3 games like Q2/Hexen2/Half-Life/Q3 etc.) or even 60 Hz will be enough. I don't remember them doing this back in the day btw (or I just didn't pay attention to it), have they always been that way?

It's very average. Drags on a bit.

It's also bizarre in that you spend the entire game shooting the X-Men.

And why doesn't Square return to the charming fantasy setting instead of giving us pseudo-realistic settings with a boy-band enoutrage??

>Why is this so underrated, yet so good?

The hype was deflated after FF8 and a lot of casual fans bailed. It's a captain obvious statement but it's true. Randoms had no expectations and would rather save the money for a PS2 while replaying FF7.

First game I ever pre-ordered, and among my favorites for PS1. Those were the golden years for Squaresoft, this game is very underrated. The blend of technology and fantasy was flawless, great richness of characters and locations, loads of side quest - the chocobo treasure hunting was great fun. FF9's soundtrack is still one I listen to (not like it's my only CD but is in the mix).

Honestly, I have forgotten the specifics, in the storyline and otherwise, but that will make it more enjoyable to replay someday when I have the time. Looking forward to it

No, it's overrated. The game has 20 seconds long loading times before AND after EVERY battle. The reason this game has a cult following is because it was 'retro', you even said it:

I made this boss for a big community romhack in the SMW engine, written in assembly over about a week. Assembly takes for fucking ever.

>>3540

Yeah the problem is, if you want an extra note, everything else has to be pushed forward by that much. Like everything else in the entire sound chip's RAM need to move by a ferw bytes. And then? The game pointers that SHOULD BE pointing to the beginning of the data are now off by that much. It's a mess. That stuff always is super optimally packed like that.

Thanks for the insights, guys. As someone who rarely even plays ROMhacks - and even then can only appreciate them from a game design standpoint - this shit is fascinating.

How did you get started?

Did you always enjoy programming and vidya separately, then combine the two?

Or did you like vidya so much that you wanted to learn how to de-/re-construct things?

Disclaimer: this post and the subject matter and contents thereof - text, media, or otherwise - do not necessarily reflect the views of the 8kun administration.

 No.3554

Yes I'll say you probably need a superhuman love of programming and wanting to figure out how stuff works to really get into it. Like I somehow thought it was fun to read some textbooks on assembly language when I was 16 (although I admit I only read half the book before getting distracted by shit like Starcraft) and nobody had to force me to, it's just part of wanting to know where the true power behind these amazing creations originates from. So from there, it's kind of a natural step from that point to get into romhacking. Although I don't really do romhacking anymore. It's a thankless hobby really and I'd rather make bigger, more useful things.

TLDR If you're passionate about something no matter what it is such as drawing, music, or video games, you should be able to channel that passion into putting in the time to figure out how it truly works and what makes it great.

>Has anyone here worked on a Rom Hack for a retro vidya before?

Yes, from terrible FF6 romhacks published on zophar to multiplayer trainers.

>How did you get started?

I was interested in RPGs and wanted to make my own but with the FF6 engine. It helps that you have an interest in the game you are hacking.

>Did you always enjoy programming and vidya separately? Or did you like vidya so much that you wanted to learn how to de-/re-construct things?

A bit of both. I never liked programming or math but I like games. Eventually my drive for wanting to hack a game became strong enough to force myself learning asm and C. If you want to get into it learn how to memory cheat and go from there. Slowly work your way up to learning more advance things like gameshark activators. You can do a lot with just gameshark codes.

In the end the comparison isn't really fair given that SMW ended up having to be rushed for the SFC launch and wasn't really finished properly. The later worlds show that at some point they stopped improving the games' design aspects and just went on to wrap things up tie up any loose ends so the game could be shipped in time.

I love both of them equally but I'm slowly starting to side with Sega. I love Jet Set Radio, NiGHTS, Space Channel 5, Bonanza Bros and Super Monkey Ball to name a few. Sonic's pretty good too.

Also, their attempt at a Mortal Kombat clone was pretty great. Shame that the third game in the series was cancelled since they were worried the game would cause Virtua Fighter to get less attention.

Sega because I've had better experience with their games such as Sonic, House Of The Dead, Shenmue, Virtua Fighter, Fighting Vipers, Virtual On, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Virtua Cop, Fighters Megamix, Super Monkey Ball, Nights Into Dreams, Streets Of Rage, Vectorman, Alex Kidd, Space Harrier, After Burner, Hang On, Seaman, Samba The Amigo… man I couldn't get enough of Sega, I just absolutely love their games. Whereas with Nintendo, I've only been able to enjoy mostly Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart and some other titles. But most of the Nintendo titles seem too kiddie, compared to Sega titles.

Sega. There games were actually challenging which puts into perspective why Nintendo's games are referred to as baby games and their franchises had for more variation in terms of gameplay, thematics, and innovation. The Sega of Japan v. Sega of America conflict was the modern day (at least industry) equivalent of the Imperial Japanese Navy v. Imperial Japanese Army conflict, SoJ sabotaged everything SoA tried to do and were responsible for the 32X and Saturn being flops especially the former which didn't need to exist.

Hey /vr/.

I'm searching for the game Golden Land – an isometric russian RPG from 2003 similar to the original fallouts.

I played it years back (it was translated to my language) and had a great time. Now, I'd like to introduce some of my English friends to it, but not only can't I find any place to pirate or buy it, I can't even find out whether it was translated to english or not (supposedly, it wasn't as far as in 2010, yet some sites list it as having an english translation).

Would any of you happen to know where to get that game?

Also, general Golden Land thread.

This game is COMPLETELY unknown and obscure to American Gen Z kids born in 1995-1999 like you. The casual generation, YOLO generation. When you saw the trailer for the PS4 reboot, I'm sure you were scratching your heads.

Ask an American 16 year old if he/she's used played this game and they'll say "wat dat." Ask them what their favorite old-school games are and they'll say "Sonic Heroes, Bully, Simpsons hit n Run, God of War, Gears of War, modern warfare 2, Kingdom Hearts, Battle for Bikini Bottom, Crash Twinsanity, lego star wars, sonic adventure 2, Halo. those were da bess, swag yolo. 👌👏👌👏👌👏"

You selfie-taking pieces of shit still claim to be a "le 90s kid" despite not remembering the 90s, not knowing what Pete and Pete is, not knowing what Clarissa Explains It All is, never touching an SNES, and growing up with shittastic shows that were the antithesis of the 90s like spongebob, Code lyoko, camp lazlo, squirrel boy, gym Partner, Kids next Door, Jimmy Neutron, iCarly, Drake & Josh, Naked Brothers band, avatar, and that fucking Ned show.

Hah I always end up feeling left out of most of those "only '90s kids will understand" things even though I was born in '91 because my parents were too poor/stubborn to pay for cable back then. My childhood TV memories are mostly of fiddling with rabbit ears and watching static-y reruns of '80s sitcoms. Makes me feel more like an '80s kid than a '90s kid in some ways

Part of that could be a legit backlash to the accelerated trend in recent years to appropriate "retro" stuff by people who only want to utilise it to status signal ("such nerd, much vintage").

Part of it could simply be people being "muh sekrit club" dickwads.

This game (well the very first SotB game) is what made me buy an Amiga 500, back in 1991. The guy had a few other games we played: Xenon II, Menace, Blood Money, and some 2-player tank game that was pretty fun but I can't remember the name.

Anyway the first Beast game had pefectly smooth scrolling with lots of parallax layers, big sprites, and a that beautiful soundtrack with pan pipes. Had never seen or heard anything like it before.

The controls are pretty rough by console standards though. It's up to jump, and just the one fire button to attack. Pretty typical for computer games with joystick back then. If you want something easier, the Sega Genesis game is pretty good, but doesn't quite match the graphics and sound of the original.

Anyway it's a pretty tough game. Made it to the bottom of the castle level without cheating, and no further. It's pretty easy to get ganked in this game. You kind of have to memorize patterns and stuff, like in Ninja Gaiden.

Anyway the game was impressive then, but maybe not as much now for someone who's seen even better stuff on Neo-Geo and such. I still like its weird and unique atmoshphere. Some other good Amiga games to try: Gods, Satan, Leander, Risky Woods, Lionheart, Toki, Prince of Persia, Another World, Flashback.

>Some people are snobs about being "oldschool" and that's a shame because the best way to keep good games alive is to invite younger generations to try them.

This is true

Actually it surprises me how much a lot of kids actually like playing old games. I think they can sense that more effort went into them than the similar-ish games they have on their smartphones.

Chrontendo Episode 52

The long delayed Episode 52, covering….more December 1989! The big game this episode is Capcom's proto 'survival horror' game Sweet Home. We take a look at the Sweet Home movie, as well.
