Sega.
The Saturn was hands down the best system of the 5th gen and easily has games that are the most playable today, especially with the loads of 2D games the Saturn has.
But in general I prefer Sega consoles. They just had a lot of personality and were really upbeat, and had more of an arcade style which made them really fun to replay. Also those Sega soundtracks just can't be beat.

Generally speaking, Nintendo had the larger library and better, more popular game. But, the reality is that they both had great systems and amazing games.
Why not just love both companies?

I prefer nintendo just because I think they put a lot of effort into their games. The last couple of Sega games I've tried I've really been disappointed in. They just didn't feel that great to me.
I like the aestetics of Sega a bit more, (artstyle and almost nothing can beat them out in terms of music but gamepley never stuck with me)
Speaking of which I got a couple of dreamcasts games on steam and they feel a bit wonky to me. Would they feel better if I was playing on an emulator?

Both.
Nintendo and Sega both provided god-tier games on their systems when it was primarily a Nintendo vs Sega market. There is no reason to own a Sony or Microsoft today if you own a PC; both Nintendo and Sega's consoles were worth owning back then based on their merits.
I just want a return to the Nintendo vs Sega days. Sony and Microsoft fucked everything up. Consoles weren't meant to be anti-consumer media boxes.

Both are good, but I prefer SEGA's variety in terms of demographics.
The only major Nintendo properties I can think of that aren't explicitly "fun for the whole family" are Metroid and occasionally Zelda. Meanwhile, SEGA covers way more bases than that, and it's nice to see variety.

Nintendo,
Yes the Mega Drive was good, but it relied on Sonic mainly, with Streets of Rage and Street Fighter 2 being the back up, while the SNES was in a whole other League with Link to the Past, Earthbound, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, The two best Final Fantasies (4 and 6), Super Mario Kart, so on so forth,
I mean if Sega at its top of its game isn't better than its rival console then what makes you think it even has even a Shred of a chance that its better than Nintendo, I havn't played a Dreamcast (but will when I get the money) but that and the Mega Drive cant compete with the GBA and the Wii U alone (Including them two as those two gets the best coverage of all the best Nintendo games, as I'm including backwards compatabillity and for the Wii U the eShop and the Wii Shop Channels), outside Mega Drive and Dreamcast their best thing they have published is Bayonetta, and we all know who is Publishing it now

I think Sega. Nintendo is this well behaved company with nearly all of its games made by a dozen or so studios working for them on a tight leash. Nintendo itself make most of its best games so you always, always know what you're going for. It's like going to the perfect family home where everything is tidy, dusted and in the end of the day we all have dinner after prayers. Being ultimately a family company, it comes natural to them to be like this. I mean it shows.
Sega on the other hand began outside Japan, doing slot-machines to steal quarters. They just entered game business to steal more quarters. Compare that with Nintendo who were doing games for a 100 years.
So why would I prefer Sega? It's all about chaos with them. They released games from all sorts of companies. If you happened to be a 4 dudes company working 15 hours a day in a cluttered minuscule office, Sega would be the place to try to strike a deal. For Nintendo that sort of thing is heretical. They were thinking about the kids quite early on. They even did toys for a while. Sega on the other hand was way more of a gambler with its games. They even released games based on movies when the producers didn't have the rights in the first place, and then they would need to make last minute changes. I mean it's ridiculous in a way and that's the reason their games is more hit or miss when you compare to Nintendo. That freedom though allowed a lot of weird stuff to be released or ported from old computer games. It had less of a strict standard and it shows; if you look a list of Nes games and Master System games you'll see it.
On one hand you have all these beautiful polished games by Nintendo. I mean they continue to work on a straight path until perfection. If you happen to have played all Zelda games for example, you can clearly see that. Most elements are there from the beginning. They continue to repeat that formula, improving each time, making it more perfect than before. Sega was always trying to go around that releasing weird things like Shenmue. I think in the end, as the money to make games grew exponentially, a wild gambler like Sega had no place on the table anymore. Having 3 consoles to fail in a row was too much and now Sonic works for Mario. Regardless, it was an awesome run for us to see. It was like betting on the wild horse that sometimes sprints like it's on the perfect diet and exercise schedule and sometimes shows up on drugs and falls flat on its face. So yeah, I think I would "choose" Sega. If I had to marry though, I would marry Nintendo. You want a wife who can cook and is always home, not the hot kinky wife that sometimes gets so wasted she crashes her car into the neighbor's house, killing the dog.

Sega was extremely innovative, sometimes it hurt them and sometimes it led to them releasing stuff that wasn't fully fleshed out. But stuff like Nights, Burning Rangers, even Enemy Zero was fun in a weird way, if not the greatest game. They took risks that other companies didn't take, ultimately it probably hurt them in the end, but there was just nothing similar to many of those games on other consoles. Even Sonic was pretty unique in a world of platformers while Mario followed a more easily emulated platform style.

If I was forced to choose one, I would pick SEGA.
There are more SEGA games I like than Nintendo games.
SEGA games are generally more unique and interesting, using characters with personality.
SEGA consoles are amazing. The Saturn controller is the best controller ever made.
SEGA pioneered the arcade machine movement and is still making great arcade games.
SEGA usually doesn't take down fan games where as Nintendo does it all the time. SEGA fans are still looking at the Genesis hardware and making better games for it and the Dreamcast.
Nintendo has a record of doing dirty business and fucking people over.
SEGA still makes games I want to play, but Nintendo's new games I have no interest in.

SEGA
>Why?
I'm just a fucking mark for Sega. I was always a Sega kid in that age (mostly for fightan' games which the Sega ports were usually solid and the controller was a dream) and I like what Sega did. As I grew older I really came to appreciate the SNES and it's library but none of that (except maybe Earthbound and Chrono Trigger) ever meant as much to me as just putting together the Tower of Power and playing Snatcher on it, or recently getting a GDEMU for my Dreamcast and finally being able to play Shenmue undubed, not to mention all the other games.
I'm a fucking mark for Sega and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I'm not even going to say they were better than Nintendo, I'm just going to say they deserved better than what happened.

I like Genesis more than SNES, because it feels more retro. It's an older console of course, so there's that. But also it has more straight ports of arcade games like Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Altered Beast, Shinobi, and so forth. SNES instead has a lot of Super-this and Super-that new games, but I don't care about that, I just wanted the classics.
Also SNES has a lot of orchestral music, and Sega is limited to a more chip-like sound, and I prefer that. And less colors too, but still enough to look good. A lot of the older arcade games were limited in color too, so it's fine.

SEGA
they invented multiple genres such as the fighting genre (Heavyweight Champ) and the FPS genre (Periscope) on fucking discrete logic when Nintendo was making paper with ink printed on it. They are an American electromechanical company that moved to Japan. The list of their innovations is simply too long to post. I don't understand why this conversation is always centered around consoles, if you simply look at both companies full game history SEGA is objectively the most prolific videogame company to ever exist and Nintendo made some consoles after a couple arcades with colorful cabinets. There is no comparison. Anyone who claims to love videogames and doesn't worship at the altar of SEGA is a fraud.

Also, their attempt at a Mortal Kombat clone was pretty great. Shame that the third game in the series was cancelled since they were worried the game would cause Virtua Fighter to get less attention.

Sega. There games were actually challenging which puts into perspective why Nintendo's games are referred to as baby games and their franchises had for more variation in terms of gameplay, thematics, and innovation. The Sega of Japan v. Sega of America conflict was the modern day (at least industry) equivalent of the Imperial Japanese Navy v. Imperial Japanese Army conflict, SoJ sabotaged everything SoA tried to do and were responsible for the 32X and Saturn being flops especially the former which didn't need to exist.
