Super Mario Bros. 3 is better than Super Mario World.

I don't know if I could call one better, but I know that I really enjoyed playing them both

I'd have to side with SMB3 too. The game just feels so much bigger and more challenging, with each world having its own feel and tons of obscure little secrets. Plus the airship levels, which are awesome.
SMW, while great in its own right, feels like a step backwards in some ways.

Pretty even to me. Two of the best platformers in my opinion, each had it's respective strengths.
I enjoyed World more as a kid, but I replay 3 more often nowadays.

They're both amazing in their own ways, why even choose? SMB2 is also amazing. I enjoy them all equally, sometimes I'm in the mood for one over the other depending on what I'm looking for.

Don't get me wrong, it's a classic and all, but it was outdone in every aspect by every other mario game after that

i disagree. smb was tight as shit. the controls/physics are perfect, and everything else is finely tuned around it, so when you know the levels, you can pretty much just take off from the beginning and run like a motherfucker right to the end. with the all-stars version, they changed things slightly, and it ruins this aspect of it. smb2 is a different kind of game, but a lot of fun in it's own right. smb3 goes back to the old mario formula, but they heaped to much useless shit on top of it, and it just ended up dragging the game down. the new power-ups aren't very interesting, and the levels are designed more for careful exploration than going fast, which i just find tedious, especially since there isn't usually anything interesting to find. thankfully, smw greatly improved on both of these aspects. the cape is actually fun to mess around with, and there are plenty of secret levels and shit to discover. it's a cool game, but nowhere near as thrilling as speedrunning the original, imo.

So ina nutshell, you don't like games that are about pacing yourself? Seems like you like mario games to become Sonic

pacing yourself is what you do when you you first start playing smb. then, when you git gud, you can go fast. later mario games force you to go slow. and so do many of the stages in sonic, btw.

I have to second this. The states of platforms and other movable objects when you first meet them in most Mario levels are done in such a way that you never really have to stop and wait for a platform or whatever if you know what you're doing. You can just rush through the levels entirely.
I remember the first NSMB having pretty good level design towards this too, which is why I liked it.

Lost Levels is better than Doki Doki Panic. Lost Levels is best Mario.

I love both equally, they really aren't in competition at all. It's like comparing Yoshi's Island to the rest of the series, makes no sense.
But 3 and World are equally good, practically two parts of the same game.

In the end the comparison isn't really fair given that SMW ended up having to be rushed for the SFC launch and wasn't really finished properly. The later worlds show that at some point they stopped improving the games' design aspects and just went on to wrap things up tie up any loose ends so the game could be shipped in time.

SMB3 had great physics but some of the level design is just shit, like those gimmicky sun levels. SMW has the upper edge there.
