I disagree. I just played it for the first time last week and I found it to be pretty good. Not 10/10 but certainly above mediocre. The atmosphere is very good and the dialogue/recordings breathe a lot of life into it. The RPG and shooter aspects really aren't very good but the relative scarcity of resources still makes it a bit challenging to play through.

I couldn't really get into it either. Which is odd, because I loved the first System Shock which most people feel is far more dated and generally worse.

I feel that has more to do with it's age. The big gripe I had with it was the controls.

Terranigma by far.

Nice music, nice visuals, nice story, but, good lord, is the gameplay mind-numbingly dull. A pattern I've noticed is a lot of people are trying to find that one hidden gem action RPG that they can compare favorably to the behemoth known as Zelda, and so any half decent action from that era tends to get hyped to the moon. most of them are actually very stiff and don't offer much in terms of strategy, secrets, intrigue, good puzzles, discovery, tools to tackle the world with or, just things to do in general besides press forward and hack hack hack. I like some of them like Illusion of Gaia, but I found Terranigma to just be significantly worse, gameplay wise, in just about every respect.

I recently played SS2 for the first time, went with self-imposed save-restrictions for extra challenge and I found it pretty good. Had been a while since a game got me comfy.

I feel like the game makes some very strange decisions for its genre; it's an RPG where half the point is to get stronger, but the difficulty settings limit just how strong you can get. It's a horror game, yet it cheapens the very concept of death by putting respawn stations all over the place, theoretically allowing a player to keep throwing themselves at the same enemy who constantly kicks their ass, whittling its health down over several lives at a pretty low cost. If you ask me, that's a scarier situation for the enemy than it is for the player.

However, I enjoyed the atmosphere and the overall progression. The core gameplay isn't fantastic, but it is satisfying. For this I'd still say it's a good game.

it's really slow, she controls like a tank, the game is huge and unfun, and it plays like a japanese game with frankly insane levels of grind that feels completely inappropriate in a platformer, you're severely underpowered after the intro stage, there's a completely unnecessary day-night cycle that just makes it more painful and the money system is a trickle.

it's not even that it's a gbc game, metal gear solid: ghost babel is fucking great.

most of the mechanics were fun in river city ransom and castlevania.

How can you have an issue with the controls? The keys are rebindable and the menu system is quite intuitive.

The game is pretty horribly balanced but I still think its great, for its sound and visual design, level design and resource management that encourages exploration.

Not trying to be SS2 defence force 2015 but it's one of my all time favorite games, and it just has staggering depth. You can even take advantage of the dark engine that it uses by hiding from enemies in the shadows. They try to look for you in a similar fashion to Thief, and it's something I never even noticed on my first playthroughs.

Those sections seemed to give you a good arsenal and varied ways to approach things, even if it did boil down to "blow everything the fuck up".

The non-mech sections just lacked weight. There was no solidity to your weapons or your enemies. And, from memory, they also felt a bit slippery.

play a bit longer 'til you have more hearts and get more of the moves. it gets easier and having more moves makes fighting less cumbersome (I particularly like the double up tap jump up and then kick diagonally down move).

also I hope you realized you need to press B to run…

the day-night cycle makes the monsters tougher. but not really a big problem.

personally I kind of like it the most in the trilogy because it offers the most challenge…
