Is there any way in knowing the life expectancy of our games? Could cartridges die out in our lifetime like discs likely will?

Good disc rips and ROM images, my friend. Everdrives and other flash carts, and memory card modifications for optical systems (3DO, Dreamcast, Saturn, PSX, Sega CD) would be advisable.

Same, tbh.
I'm only a mild collectorfag, I'll usually start collecting for a system, after a while get tired with paying for everything, find this game I want to play that has an insance pricetag, and get a flashcart/modchip instead.
I definitely enjoy owning originals though. And prefer hardware > software when I can.
Sometimes the flashcarts are so expensive I end up continuing getting cheap originals though…

I do. I bought a Kirby's Pinball Land cart just a couple months ago because I wanted to play it on my GBA. The emulator on my phone is touchscreen only, which is shit for anything requiring timing. I bought it on the eShop for my DS, but can't always have my DS with me, so I went the phone emulator route for that particular title, which is easy to pick up and put down when on the go.
>hardware+flashcarts
>imbpblyinbg I haven't been looking into flashcarts for the past several weeks.
My 3DS is at a really recent firmware revision so I think it's fucked, but I'm debating between paying more for a DSTwo+ cart that would potentially be able to play 3DS Roms if there's another exploit found or just getting a DSTwo and maybe having to buy another cart later.
The other debate is whether I should buy a DS Lite so I can play from my GB carts, which I doubt save any more, but it would be cool to have the ability. My biggest fucking regret in life is selling shit loads of my gameboy and N64 games to a mom and pop game shop when I was around 12. So much pain thinking about all that good vidya lost.

Yeah, but I have to find;
1) Some ridiculous claim to make
2) Something to insult you with based on that claim.
> recent firmwares
Yeah, they work, but what's in question is whether or not I should buy the thing in anticipation of a future exploit or not. Apparently the 3DS piracy scene is kind of being swamped with moralfaggotry and a lot of crackers are dropping out of the game. It's $40 for one that can do nes, snes, gba, and ds, or an extra $30 just for the potential to play 3ds later, but, for me, with no extra benefit at the moment.

Buying the 3DS specific cards are not worth it anymore, IMO. The only benefit over CFW atm is the ability to run .3ds files (unless CFWs have gained that ability), and they're really nothing more than DRM tools for the commercial hacks.
Also the moralfaggotry in the 3DS scene is precisely why I haven't kept up with it. One can only read that many debates about piracy by underageb& people.
If you want a DS card, on the other hand, the DSTwo is highly recommended. It can even do GBA (emulated, though) and SNES quite ok (no special chips though) with the built-in CPU.
DSTwo still works great on recent firmwares (unless I missed something), Nintendo doesn't really care about patching out NDS flashcarts anymore, and the DSTwo people have always been good at updating their firmware back when Nintendo gave a shit.

Oh, I forgot to mention, there's even a DOSBox style x86 emulator that can leverage the DSTwo CPU. It was pretty cool to play Prince of Persia (DOS) and Skyroads on a NDS/3DS.
Have a Kirby picture I found on Googlel.

>DSTwo
Yeah, that's the only contender I'm taking seriously. I decided that I'd preorder the DSTwo + for $10 more than I could pay to have the ordinary DSTwo now.
>DOSbox
That's darn tootin' I'll have to look into that. Battery life be damned, I'll carry a rechargeable battery. I've got one of those USB chargers for the 3ds so I may as well use it. Part of why I wanted the DSTwo+ was because it has twice the memory, a faster CPU, etc. just for whatever future apps get developed for it. I think I made the right choice.

Is the DSTwo+ the one that is promising 3DS support? If I remember correctly it seems a bit iffy on the 3DS side of things, compared with the other alternatives. But if it's the same on the DS side of things it should be all right.
About the DOS emu: http://dsx86.patrickaalto.com/
There's a version that works like a regular .nds too, but of course it isn't as fast as the one that leverages the DSTwo CPU.

Yes, that's the one. The 3DS support comes from a "Gateway emulator" used on other chips, they basically just copied the technology. My 3DS has too new a firmware version currently to take advantage of that support anyway - assuming that it would work correctly upon release - but I'm hoping that maybe another exploit will be found for a later firmware version. Barring that, at least I get the CPU and RAM upgrade to run other apps, which I would be content with.
Definitely saving that link, too. Thanks.

electronics become obsolete, chips overheat and fail, etc etc.
The best hope we have right now is to have at least, a digital copy of something. Emulation might be the only chance we have at playing old games.

Think of all the Japanese home computer games that are still out there. Think of how many games be it corporate or doujin we are going to lose forever. There's a hidden masterpiece of a game lying around somewhere, possibly something that would be in your top 10 games of all time. This game will not be dumped by the time it rots away, let alone translated or continuously distributed on the internet.

The biggest problem is with PC games on floppies. Fullset/archival groups are calling for everyone to copy that floppy while the data is still held in the magnetic disk.
An endangered/extinction scale for games would look something like this:
0. Game is easily bought in stores or digital distribution.
1. Game stops being produced. No more new copies.
2. Game cannot be bought new or used in a store.
3. Game is very expensive on eBay/other sites.
4. Game is very rare on eBay/other sites.
5. Game no longer has any existing working copies.
We're currently between 2 and 3 for the majority of /vr/ games. 5 is only a matter of time. Trackers will keep all the torrents alive indefinitely, and the archival groups themselves will probably be around in some form, but it wouldn't hurt to buy drives and download them. Put some of that on USB sticks, pass them around. You can buy a seedbox to ensure there's one more seed.
Consoles are likely to last 100+ years from now, given that they're low power devices and lots of them were produced. CRTs, on the other hand, is the bigger hardware survival issue.

Why not just dump the game binary, and then reverse engineer it to find out where the code is that references the optical drive?
Make a launcher for it that patches those parts out of the game and makes them refer to a relative path folder instead. Use OllyDbg, x64Dbg or IDA Pro.
You'll need to trampoline the routines that perform audio events; play, stop, pause, etc, and inject a DLL that plays audio files from the game folder instead.
Someone did this for Heroes 2 and it works fine. CD audio played back from the relative folder as audio files.
