Yo, let's get this slow-ass board back into gear with a Pokemon thread.
And by that I mean let's talk Gen 1. The first, and invariably one that kickstarted something big.
Gen 2 is welcome as well in case 151 just isn't enough for ya.

I think the biggest reason it was so successful is because it captured the spirit of adventure and exploration better than a lot of other games (certainly more so than other JRPGs).
It wasn't a generic medieval fantasy land, and your fuckhuge party didn't get boring weapon upgrades from the local smithy at pre-determined intervals: they grew flamethrowers and water-cannons.
I realised these were the aspects I liked most about the Pogeymans when I first booted up Stadium and was greeted with Cockfighting Spreadsheet 2000, where only the raw mathematics of any of it mattered.

I have to say that I liked the ol' Gen 1 only Toxic/Leech Seed combo where "badly PSN" and Leech seed double up on each other. Shame it wouldn't work right if the CPU/Player switches out seeing as how "badly PSN" reverts into regular PSN upon switching out and switching back in.
I also like how Blastoise is quite versatile in game in R/B/Y or R/G/B/Y.
90Acc. Blizzard, Surf, and Earthquake suit it fine.
Anyway, as much as I appreciate and respect Gen 1 as the Gen that started it all, I still don't like how the Rival's Champion team in R/G/B had pisspoor movesets.
For instance:
>Exeggutor's moveset is Hypnosis-Barrage-Stomp
>Rhydon's moveset is Tail Whip-Leer-Horn Attack-Stomp
But at least his Yellow Champion team is somewhat better, though Exeggutor is still shit but with Leech Seed added.
Pokemon Stadium still kicks ass in general though.

Pretty well said. It's amazing how alive it still is and I feel warm and happy inside I was around for the start. I was as old as kids playing their first pokemon game today. In a much different time on much older tech, but the spirit of it is still there. I still think gen 1 and 2 are better as well as the old style they're all drawn in. Can't say much about the new games. Last I played was soul silver and 3 gym leaders in Black 2 before calling quits on it.

I loved how grass/poison/psychic pokemon were actually viable
I managed to beat elite 4 with an almost all grass team that was a couple of levels under the elite 4 pokemon to boot. It was a really epic end battle too, with both my Venusaur and Garrys Charizard out of moves, both were last pokemon on our teams. They kept using struggle against each other until my Venusaur came up on top due to him being an HP sponge.
But then they introduced a quagmire of shitty grass types while making the good ones hard to get. Even then they're nerfed to hell and back. I tried rebuilding the team in Fire Red and got my ass handed to me.

Pikachu's your only option for the starter and I'm pretty sure you can't make the little yellow bugger evolve.
There are a few Pokemon that you can't catch in Yellow, but I'm not sure which ones. Half of Red's, half of Blue's, I'd imagine.

Pokemon games are so popular, so similar, and so nostalgia-powered that they would end up competing with themselves. They just want you to put 40 bucks down for their newest game, instead of paying 5 bucks to play one of the older titles.

My Blue was stolen in 1999 and silver went missing around 04. Ruby ( a bit new to talk about here?) want missing too. I feel like a lot of my childhood shit went missing. It's a bit disheartening really. At least I still have Dreamland…

Motherfucker I KNOW those feels…blue was my shit, I had a blastoise just like on the cartridge, he was the coolest. I knew it was him because of how he reacted when I confronted him about it, but I couldn't prove anything. He left school shortly after and I never got it back. I was so damned heartbroken. This. Only one thing mattered - fun. I used to spend hours on my Gyarados and Poliwrath, I had no idea if Vaporeon gave you better bang for your buck or whatever, I had no concept of that. It's a strange statement, but I really miss the idea of "fun" in gaming.

Oddly even when people I knew would mid/max and EV train. I never did. I would grind levels like any RPG, but I made my team pokemon I liked. Last pokemon game I played was Soul Silver. And that was when it came out. I booted up my copy and found my team.

Paterson. In case you're not familiar, it was one of those situations where I was one of about six white kids in my high school (that's not an exaggeration,) and probably about one out of thirty native English speakers.
I used to go to my cousin's house in Cranford and he had Sega TV, Sega Internet, Sega wireless controllers and I used to think "what is this wizardry?"
Nice find, other than Blue and Red I never sunk too much time into the others, though I would always come back to Blue and Red every few years, especially if I noticed my brother was playing. I never did get anybody to 100, I'd always get to like 96 and then be like "I'll max it out soon," and then put it down and then focus on another game. If I had the link cable I would've been more motivated to hit 100.
I'm same as you, I'd grind who I liked. Charizard, Beedrill, Nidoqueen, Tentacruel, Persian, Chansey, Kangaskhan, Gyarados, Poliwrath, Blastoise, Ninetales, Jolteon, Paras, Scyther, Arcanine…those were pretty much the ones I put the most time into throughout various saves.

Ruby was the last one I played before I didn't care anymore. I was given Pearl and only beat 1 gym before I stopped and 3 badges in Black 2 before I didn't care. I only played Soul Silver for memories. The game even added a thing that played the old GB music, so I put that on ASAP. A lot of people I know still play the games. As long as they're having fun. I just don't care. I'm the guy that likes gen 1-2 and some of 3.

So this is what it feels like when doves cry.
I was the only kid in my school to get the Diploma. Goddamn Tauros took forever. Got my Lv100 Blastoise, my first starter ever. Then some piece of shit from school stole it. Then my parents made me move before I got a chance to take it the fuck back.
Blastoise is best starter.
And speaking of nobody having a Link Cable, did anyone actually have a Game Boy Printer? I got a Link Cable for Pokemon, I got great use out of it until Gen III came out and decided it didn't want to be compatible with anything anymore, but I never saw a Game Boy Printer in real life. The sheer disappointment of going to see the guy at Game Freak HQ after getting all 151 like he said, only to find out the reward was some shit on the Game Boy Printer. Never before had I felt such a supreme sense of disappointment. But it was a good lesson, because I would feel that level of disappointment many times after. Like when I played Gen III, for example. Fuckers took out more features than they added. Gen IV is awesome though.
