International Law’s Fight for Relevance

International law is fighting for relevance. The outcome of this fight is likely to change the entire global political dynamic, which was shaped by World War II and sustained through the selective interpretation of the law by dominant countries.

In principle, international law should have always been relevant, if not paramount, in governing the relationships among all countries, large and small, to resolve conflicts before they turn into outright wars. It should also have worked to prevent a return to an era of exploitation that allowed Western colonialism to practically enslave the Global South for hundreds of years.

Unfortunately, international law, which was in theory supposed to reflect global consensus, was hardly dedicated to peace or genuinely invested in the decolonization of the South.

From the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan to the war on Libya and numerous other examples, past and present, the U.N. was often used as a platform for the strong to impose their will on the weak. And whenever smaller countries collectively fought back, as the U.N. General Assembly often does, those with veto power, military and economic leverage used their advantage to coerce the rest based on the maxim, “might makes right.”

It should therefore hardly be a surprise to see many intellectuals and politicians in the Global South arguing that, aside from paying lip service to peace, human rights and justice, international law has always been irrelevant.

This irrelevance was put on full display through 15 months of a relentless Israeli genocidal war on Gaza that killed and wounded over 160,000 people, a number that, according to several credible medical journals and studies, is expected to dramatically rise.

New letter reveals Biden administration didn’t fully comply with requests involcing Democrat online fundraising platform

The Biden administration failed to fully comply with a demand to allow Congress to review Suspicious Activity Reports involving the massive Democrat online fundraising platform ActBlue, prompting a fresh request Monday to the Trump Treasury Department, according to correspondence obtained by Just the News.

House Oversight and Accountability Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., and House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil, R-Wis., made the joint request to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant seeking access to the SARs, which are required by federal law when banks suspect money laundering or other suspicious activity.

The committees first sought the reports last fall, and Comer has said government officials told them there are hundreds of such reports.

In their new letter, the chairmen revealed the Biden Treasury Department only let Congress see some of the reports.

“Although the Biden Administration initially stalled the Committees’ requests in its entirety for months, on January 2, 2025, Treasury allowed the Committees to review only limited documents,” they wrote Bessant. “We write to request Treasury, in its commitment to transparency and cooperation, provide both Committees with the remaining records relevant to our investigations.”

A pro-Palestine group has vandalised parts of Donald Trump's Turnberry golf resort in Scotland.

Palestine Action posted photographs on social media showing red paint daubed across one of the buildings at the Ayrshire course.

The words "Gaza is not for sale" are sprayed across one green and another green appears to have been dug up.

A further photograph shows a damaged lamp post at the resort owned by the Trump Organisation. A spokesperson said it was a "childish, criminal act".Police Scotland confirmed it was investigating the incident.

President Trump caused widespread international criticism after repeatedly proposing to empty the Gaza strip of all Palestinians and turn the area into a resort.

He proposed taking ownership of the Gaza Strip and redeveloping it, after saying earlier that Palestinians should move out of the region.

"The US will take over the Gaza Strip and we will do a job with it too," Trump said during a joint conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last month.

Trump made the comments after meeting with the Israeli leader at the White House. Netanyahu responded, saying the idea is "worth paying attention to".

The US president has previously said neighbouring nations could take in displaced Palestinians from Gaza - a proposal that was rejected by Arab nations.

Japan's Defense Ministry says it has detected China's GJ-2 drone in the skies around Japan for the first time.

The ministry says the reconnaissance-attack unmanned aerial vehicle flew over the East China Sea and passed between Okinawa's main island and Miyako Island headed for the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday.

The ministry says the drone then changed direction from southward to northeastward and reached an area east of the island of Amami Oshima.

It said the craft then turned around and retraced its path back toward China.

The ministry also says it found another Chinese reconnaissance drone flying on the similar route.

The Japan Air Self-Defense Force scrambled fighter jets in response to the drone flights.

The ministry says the Chinese craft did not violate Japan's territorial airspace.

The ministry says it continues to monitor the Chinese military's increasing activities around Japan.

The US promise of NATO membership for Kiev triggered the hostilities, Steve Witkoff has said

The Ukraine conflict was “provoked” and it is wrong to solely blame Russia, Steve Witkoff, a senior adviser to US President Donald Trump, has said. Moscow had to respond to a security threat created by the West’s promises to accept Ukraine into NATO, he stated.

Witkoff made the remarks in an interview published by CNN on Tuesday, in which he was asked whether Washington was choosing the right side by holding talks with Moscow instead of continuing to funnel aid to Kiev.

The situation is not black-and-white, with Russians being “the bad guys,” Witkoff told CNN’s Jake Tapper.

“The war didn’t need to happen, it was provoked,” he added. “It doesn’t necessarily mean it was provoked by the Russians.”

According to Witkoff, “there were all kinds of conversations… about Ukraine joining NATO”prior to the conflict that were treated by Moscow as a direct threat to its security and prompted it to respond.

The US official also spoke about Russia’s readiness to swiftly end the conflict through negotiations, pointing to the talks held in Istanbul in the spring of 2022, shortly after Moscow began its military campaign.

US Army General Petraeus hails Ukraine's drone innovations as miracle in warfare

Ukraine is at the forefront of developing advanced military technologies, particularly in the realm of drone warfare, General David Petraeus, former commander of U.S. Central Command and ex-CIA Director said at the Kyiv Security Forum on Feb. 21.

According to him, "Ukraine is leading the transformation of the war," while the Russians are repeating Ukraine's progress.

"They are very good at electronic warfare, jamming, air defense, etc.," said Petraeus.

“But Ukraine continues to develop advanced technologies that are literally not used anywhere else in the world, and this is the future of war.”

Ukraine's development in the field of technology allows it to limit Russia's gains at the front every day.

It was thanks to Ukrainian developments that the Defense Forces sank one third of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and forced the enemy ships to leave Sevastopol, the general added.

Petraeus is confident that Ukraine will continue to make steady progress with drones, which are used to destroy manpower and equipment of Russian troops.

Currently, the aggressor state cannot even use its tanks near the contact line because they are quickly eliminated by Ukrainian drones.

"The drones are literally fighting infantrymen who are advancing a block or two a day," the U.S. Army general said.

“I wish they didn't make even that much progress every day. But, in the end, what Ukraine has done in these circumstances is nothing short of a miracle.”

‘’Mystery’’ drone crashes in Kurdistan’s Duhok

Shafaq News/ On Saturday, an unidentified drone crashed into a residential home in north of Duhok, Kurdistan Region.

"The drone fell on a civilian home, resulting in material damage but no injuries or fatalities," a security source confirmed to Shafaq News.

The incident is the first of its kind in Deraluk, though similar drone crashes have been reported in other parts of the al-Amadiya district, where civilian homes have also been affected.

The Region has been the site of ongoing clashes between the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Turkish military. In April 2021, Turkiye launched Operation Claw-Lock, targeting PKK strongholds in Iraqi Kurdistan, particularly in Gara, Hakurk, and Metina.

Turkiye, the United States, and the European Union classify the PKK as a terrorist organization.
