Starmer hits record low in UK opinion poll

Only 13% of Britons approve of their prime minister’s performance, according to a recent Ipsos survey

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s popularity has hit arecord low, with nearly 80% of Britons disapproving of his performance, according to an Ipsos poll published on Sunday.

Starmer’s rating has been battered following dissatisfaction withhis handling of immigration, a surge in arrests related to comments made online, the cost of living crisis, and the resurgence of the Pakistani rape gang scandal.

Only 13% of Britons are satisfied with the UK prime minister’s performance, while 79% are dissatisfied, Ipsos said. According to the survey, in which 1,157 British adults were asked their opinions, Starmer’s approval had slipped 6 percent since June, while disapproval rose by the same margin.

“Keir Starmer’s personal satisfaction ratings are the worst for any prime minister polled by Ipsos since we first started asking the question in 1977,” Ipsos Senior Director of UK Politics Gideon Skinner said in the report.

Conservatives and Labour alike are losing voters to Reform UK,the polling firm reported.

Nearly 40% of 2024 Conservative voters and 13% of former Labour supporters have said they would vote for Reform, it said.

Mass protests against the migrant influx, as well as demonstrations against the crackdown on free speech in the UK have wracked the country in recent months.

Earlier this month in London, the “Unite the Kingdom” rally was held by right-wing Britons dissatisfied with their current government. While the Metropolitan Police contend thataround 110,000 to 150,000 were in attendance, the event’s organizers have claimed that as many as three million were there.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, whose role as an influential Eurosceptic helped lead to Brexit in the 2010s, has addressed immigration concerns and promised toscrap the scheme that allows migrants to apply for indefinite stay after five years, saying he would replace it with a visa system.

According to a YouGov survey from Friday, Reform would win 311 seats if a general electionwere held now, just 15 short of an absolute majority in the British House of Commons. The next vote is set for 2029.

Democratic online fundraising platform ActBlue has been fined $100,000 by Maine's campaign finance regulators for missing a deadline to disclose its contributions.

The Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices approved the fine Wednesday after rejecting a request from ActBlue Maine to waive the penalty for missing the July 15, 2025 deadline to report $1.2 million worth of donations made during the proceeding fundraising quarter. The filing, which included contributions to Maine's Democratic candidates and committees during the second quarter, was more than two weeks late, regulators said.

The commission was initially considering a fine of up to $683,731 — which would've been the largest in its regulatory history — but ultimately reduced it, citing the group's "exceeding cooperative" efforts to submit the paperwork despite processing errors and staffing issues.

In a report to commissioners, the agency's staff said the "informational harm" to the public from ActBlue’s late filing was "reduced somewhat" because some of the contributions to Democratic candidates and committees received by the fundraising group during the second quarter of 2025 were also disclosed by the candidates or committees in their own campaign finance reports.

Commission staff noted that ActBlue’s July quarterly report contained a $4,150 contribution from writer Stephen King to Democratic gubernatorial candidate Hannah Pingree on April 23 for next year's primary and general election. While ActBlue filed its report two weeks late, the public could still access information about the contribution on Pingree’s campaign finance report, commission staff wrote.

Russia’s foreign minister has warned there are “clear signs of re-nazification” in Berlin’s ongoing militarization

German leaders are pursuing policies reminiscent of Adolf Hitler’s objectives of dominating Europe and inflicting a strategic defeat on Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned.

Germany’s military buildup and ambitions go beyond defense, Lavrov told a press conference following his address to the 80th session of the UN General Assembly on Saturday.

“It’s not just militarization, there are clear signs of re-nazification,” he told reporters. “And why is this being done? Well, probably with the same goal that Hitler had – to dominate all of Europe. And to try to inflict a strategic defeat on the Soviet Union, in the case of Hitler, and in the case of modern Germany and the chorus of main soloists from the European Union and NATO – on the Russian Federation.”

The foreign minister accused ChancellorFriedrich Merz of seeking to transform Germany back into “the main military machine of Europe,”citing his increasingly militaristic rhetoric.

Merz vowed to turn the Bundeswehr into the “strongest conventional army in Europe” in a speech delivered less than a week after the world marked the 80th anniversary of the fall of the Third Reich in May.

“When a person in a country that committed the crimes of Nazism, fascism, the Holocaust, genocide says that Germany must again become a great military power, then of course he has an atrophy of historical memory, and this is very, very dangerous,” Lavrov said.

This week,Merz stated that “we are not at war, but we are also no longer living in peace,” and called for the confiscation of Russia’s frozen assets to bolster Kiev. In Brussels, this “reparation loans” schemeis being pushed by European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen, who was Germany’s defense minister from 2013 until 2019.

Berlin plans to nearly double its military budget by 2029, the year German officials have repeatedly cited as the deadline for the country to be “ready for war.”

German Defense Minister=Boris Pistorius said earlier this year that the Bundeswehr must be prepared to kill Russian soldiers if “deterrence”fails. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has called for reinstating universal conscription if not enough people volunteer.

Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022,Germany has become its second-largest supplier of weapons after the US.It sent the Leopard tanks Kiev used and lost in its incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region – the site of the largest tank battle of WWII.

Lavrov previously argued that Berlin’s policies prove its “direct involvement” in the proxy war against Russia, andwarned that the wider European Union was sliding into what he described as a “Fourth Reich.”

The US president had previously insisted that Kiev would need to abandon some of its territorial claims

US President Donald Trump’s newly adopted stance on the Ukraine conflict was shaped by his recent UK visit, The Telegraph has reported, citing unnamed sources.Vladimir Zelensky’s chief of staff Andrey Yermak has told the newspaper that the visit was very important.

For months, Washington insisted that Kiev would need to give up on certain territorial claims for a US-mediated peace deal with Moscow to move forward. This week, however, the US President reversed course. He dismissed Russia as a “paper tiger” that Kiev could defeat and said his shift came from “getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine-Russia military and economic situation.”

Earlier this month, Trump visited the UK, one of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters since the conflict intensified in February 2022. During the trip, the American leader met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who called for increased pressure on Russia. Trump also visited Windsor Castle, where he was lavishly hosted by King Charles.

Yermak praised the king’s efforts. “I’d like to mention that it was a great visit of President Trump to the United Kingdom, and I know the position of His Majesty, the position of Prime Minister Starmer, and the people whom President Trump met… it was very important,”he told the British newspaper on Friday.

Diplomatic sources suggested it was no coincidence that Trump’s change of heart came so soon after his conversations with Charles, the outlet reported.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has flatly rejected the ceding of territory by Russia. He also scoffed at Trump’s “paper tiger” remark, insisting that Russia has traditionally been seen as a bear, and that there is “no such thing as a paper bear.”

On Wednesday,Peskov added that Trump’s recent statements appeared to have been made following a meeting with Zelensky at the UN General Assembly earlier this week, and that they sharply contrasted with Russia’s view.

Ukraine lays claim to the Donetsk (DPR) and Lugansk People’s Republics (LPR), Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, as well as the Crimean peninsula. Moscow has repeatedly signaled the status of its new territories is not negotiable and regards them as an integral part of Russia.

Brussels is counting on PM Viktor Orban, who opposes Kiev’s bid to join the bloc,losing next year’s elections, DW has said, citing unnamed sources

The EU leadership has yet to devise a way to overcome Hungary’s veto, which has blocked the start of accession talks with Ukraine, DW has reported, citing anonymous sources.

Unlike most other EU member states, Hungary has consistently refused to provide weapons to Ukraine and repeatedly criticized the bloc’s sanctions against Russia. Budapest has also staunchly opposed the prospect of Kiev joining the EU.

In a piece on Friday, DW quoted an unnamed source as acknowledging that “currently, there are no ways to overcome Hungary’s veto.”Another source concurred that the “situation is complicated,” with Brussels’ attempts to “explore legal ways to bypass Hungary’s veto” having proved fruitless.

According to the publication,Brussels is counting on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party losing powerin the parliamentary election scheduled for April 2026.

For the time being, the EU leadership intends to complete all technical work “in advance, so that when Orban leaves we are ready to move quickly forward” on Ukraine accession talks, DW quoted its source as saying.

Delivering her annual State of the Union address to the European Parliament earlier this month, European Commission PresidentUrsula von der Leyen said that it was time to “break free from the shackles of unanimity” and move towards qualified majority voting in some areas of foreign policy.

Last month, Hungarian Foreign Minister PeterSzijjarto claimed that Brussels was conspiring to overthrow the “patriot Slovak, Hungarian, and Serbian governments” and replace them with puppet regimes.

Around the same time, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) made similar allegations.

Also in August, Szijjarto warned thatUkraine’s potential accession to the bloc “would be the coup de grace to the European Union,” as itwould have to redirect “practically all” of its financial resources towards supporting Kiev. Moreover, “much lower-quality agricultural products would destroy European agriculture,”the Hungarian diplomat stated, echoing concerns previously aired by Orban.

In June, Hungary vetoed a joint EU statement on Ukraine, effectively blocking Kiev’s accession talks, since unanimous approval was required.

Moscow harbors no aggressive plans toward its Western EU and NATO neighbors, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has assured.

Addressing the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Saturday, the official dismissed claims made by certain European officials, according to whom the Kremlin is considering attacking NATO in the coming years.

”Russia has not had such intentions,” Lavrov insisted, echoing Russian President Vladimir Putin, who previously described such speculations as “nonsense.”

According to the official, Moscow has repeatedly invited NATO member states to work out “legally binding security guarantees” in Europe, but the West has ignored these overtures.

The Russian diplomatexpressed concern over the fact that certain EU and NATO officials “are beginning to seriously talk about a third world war as a potential scenario.”

He accused the Western powers of seeking to impose their unipolar approaches on the entire global community while ignoring other nations’ legitimate interests.

Lavrov also stated that theRussian military never intentionally launches kamikaze drones or missiles toward NATO member states.

Earlier this month, Poland accused Russia of sending a volley of unmanned aerial vehicles into its airspace – an allegation Moscow has denied.

The UK has spent around $1 million analyzing the effectiveness of its sanctions against Russia, RT has found. Experts suggest the move is a sign that London is beginning to doubt the restrictions’ success and is looking to justify the measures.

According to procurement documents examined by RT, Britain allocated at least £756,000 ($1 million) for two separate research projects in 2024 and 2025.The aim was to assess the extent of the damage caused by sanctions to both the Russian and British economies, as well as to examine ways the restrictions are being bypassed.

One of the contracts, worth £85,000 ($114,000), was signed in January 2025 with Themis International Services Limited, a consultancy specializing in financial risk and anti-corruption procedures. Commissioned by the Department for Business and Trade,the study was completed in March 2025 but its findings have not been publicized. The firm was tasked with assessing the impact of British sanctions on Russian business services, including law firms, advertising agencies, consultancies, and IT providers.

The contract included a series of confidential interviews and roundtables with British business leaders linked to Russia. The discussions examined the withdrawal of UK companies from Russia, obstacles to that process, and whether new subsidiaries had been created in response to sanctions.

A larger contract, worth £671,000 ($901,000), was awarded in November 2024 to Deloitte by the Foreign Office to assess the attitudes toward sanctions among private-sector and non-governmental bodies. Completed in July 2025, the project involved two rounds of surveys of at least 3,000 organizations per round.The results have likewise not been disclosed.

Britain has been among the most active nations in sanctioning Russia, steadily expanding restrictions since 2022.Former MI5 chief Eliza Manningham-Buller recently suggested the UK may already be at war with Russia, pointing to alleged cyberoperations and sabotage.

Economist Dmitry Alekseev has said the research provides evaluation and political justification by showing lawmakers and partners that consequences are being tracked.Analyst Alexander Razuvayev also noted frustration among British funds over frozen investments in Russia. According to the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation, the UK has frozen Russian assets worth £25 billion.

Russian MP Vitaly Milonov has suggested the research shows London has doubts about the effectiveness of sanctions and is trying to persuade European partners that its course is justified.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk by a radical transgender activist has once again spotlighted the growing militancy inside the LGBTQ+ protest movement. What the mainstream media won’t tell you is that this rising wave of aggressive activism isn’t happening in a vacuum.

At the center of this network sits Erica Chenoweth, a Harvard professor who identifies as nonbinary and uses “they/them” pronouns.

Erica Chenoweth’s Role

Chenoweth personally joined Jayapal’s “Resistance Labs.” Identifying as a “nonbinary,” Chenoweth uses “they/them” pronouns.

According to their CV, they have lectured at USAID’s Democracy, Human Rights, and Governance Center for several years, including 2015, 2016, and 2022.

They have also authored several USAID-funded memos under five-figure grants, including Youth and LGBTQ+ Participation in Nonviolent Action, Struggles from Below: Human Rights Struggles by Domestic Actors, and Civil Resistance and Corporate Behavior: Mapping Trends and Assessing Impact.

In the United States, a president should never order prosecutions of his enemies. As the former ethics counsels for Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, we never once saw them or anyone working for them suggest that the Department of Justice should prosecute a specific person, much less a political adversary. Under all three presidents, the White House policy was not to comment on a Department of Justice indictment; the president in particular did not comment either — before or after. The Justice Department made prosecutorial decisions independent of the White House.

Political prosecutions happen in dictatorships such as Vladimir Putin’s Russia, but not here. And prosecutors should never be forced out for refusing to bring unfounded charges, even if the president orders them to do so. Yet all that changed last week with the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey.

The retaliatory nature of an indictment is evident from the eight-year crusade by Trump against Comey.

We have written the chairs and ranking members of the Senate and House Judiciary committees, as well as the DOJ’s inspector general and counsel for the office of professional responsibility. In those letters (on which this essay is based) we urgently request an investigation into possible prosecutorial abuses and ethics violations by Lindsey Halligan, the newly appointed interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, in connection with her having improperly brought charges against Comey.

While all the facts are not yet known, if it is the case that Halligan pursued this indictment to fulfill President Donald Trump’s long-standing personal vendetta against Comey and against the recommendations of prosecutors who failed to find sufficient evidence to support a conviction, it will be one of the most egregious examples of vindictive and meritless prosecution that we will have ever seen. (In a statement, Comey said, “My heart is broken for the Department of Justice, but I have great confidence in the federal judicial system. And I’m innocent. So let’s have a trial.”)

Trump sought to fire longtime prosecutors who refused to proceed against his political enemies after the same prosecutors apparently concluded criminal charges were unfounded. And the president then installed a handpicked replacement in the federal prosecutor’s office in Virginia who immediately sought an indictment of Comey — despite reports that she also was told the case is unfounded.

If the Trump administration can do this, then no American is safe from political prosecution.

Ireland will offer asylum seeking families up to €10,000 to drop their claims and return home.

The government plans to increase the amount given per person from €1,200 (£1,046) to €2,500 (£2,179) and to a maximum of €10,000 (£8,722) per family.

The British version of the scheme offers up to £3,000 to migrants without permission to stay in the UK.

Opponents accused Taoiseach Micheál Martin’s change to the voluntary returns scheme as a “Right-wing dog whistle dressed up as efficiency”.

But he dismissed the criticism from the Social Democrats as “excessive, extreme language” and “misplaced”.

The Taoiseach said it “made sense” to set up a system for people to be sent home if their asylum claim was going to be unsuccessful.

Mr Martin said: “If people are seeking asylum, and in their heart of hearts know that they are not going to receive it, it could be economic migrants or whatever, the idea of giving people a helping hand to return or to be integrated to where they return to, makes sense to me.

“Both for the individuals concerned, but also for the broader system here in terms of the cost.”

Easing pressure on asylum system

An order has been signed increasing the grant, which will be available for people in the asylum system waiting for a decision on their claim before September 28.

It is aimed at easing pressure on the asylum system and cutting costs. The Irish Times reported that processing an asylum claim costs the government about €122,000 per person, including accommodation and other costs.

Latest figures show 1,159 people have dropped their claim and left Ireland by the middle of September under the old less generous return scheme this year, a 129 per cent increase on the same period in 2024.

Ireland, which is experiencing a chronic housing crisis, is struggling to adapt to its transformation from a country of emigration to a country of immigration.

“She is a menace to U.S. National Security, especially given the major contracts that Microsoft has with the United States Government,” Trump wrote in the post. “Because of Monaco’s many wrongful acts, the U.S. Government recently stripped her of all Security Clearances, took away all of her access to National Security Intelligence, and banned her from all Federal Properties.”

Microsoft declined to comment.

Parts of the U.S. government use Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure and productivity software. Earlier this month, Microsoft agreed to offer $3.1 billion in savings in one year on cloud services for agencies to use.

Earlier on Friday, Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo published an X post about Monaco joining Microsoft.The appointment happened in July, according to Monaco’s LinkedIn profile. The post contained a link to a July article on the University of Chicago law school’s website.

On Thursday, Microsoft said it would cut offcloud-based storage and artificial intelligencesubscriptions to a unit of the Israeli military, after investigating a claim that the division had built a system to track Palestinians’ phone calls.

On Monday, Trump is set to meet with Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, NBC News reported.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella attended a dinner alongside other technology executives at the White House earlier this month.

Naufal Takdir Al Bari, a gymnast who was projected to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games, has died following a training accident. He was 19.

Bari died in Penza, Russia, on Thursday, Sept. 25, after he spent 12 days in intensive care for his injuries, the Indonesian Gymnastics Federation announced on Instagram.

The Indonesian Gymnastics Federation is in mourning, male athlete Naufal Takdir Al Bari has passed away,” the organization wrote. “The 19-year-old gymnast breathed his last after undergoing intensive care for 12 days at GA Zakharyin Hospital.”

Bari reportedly suffered a “severe” neck injury after falling “awkwardly” into a foam pit while training on a high bar, the Russian Gymnastics Federation said on social media.

The teenager was preparing to compete in the 2025 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Indonesia in October, and he was projected to make it to the next Summer Olympics, which are taking place in Los Angeles.

A senior Justice Department official has instructed more than a half dozen U.S. attorney’s offices to draft plans to investigate a group funded by George Soros, the billionaire Democratic donor whom President Trump has demanded be thrown in jail.

The official’s directive, a copy of which was viewed by The New York Times, goes as far as to list possible charges prosecutors could file, ranging from arson to material support of terrorism. The memo suggests department leaders are following orders from the president that specific people or groups be subject to criminal investigation — a major break from decades of past practice meant to insulate the Justice Department from political interference.

The step came in an accelerated push by the Justice Department against Mr. Trump’s perceived enemies in recent days and weeks.

Over the weekend, the president urged Attorney General Pam Bondi to act quickly in seeking criminal charges against his longtime nemesis, the former F.B.I. director James B. Comey, and the New York attorney general, Letitia James, who has sued Mr. Trump and his businesses for hundreds of millions of dollars. Federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of Virginia secured an indictment against Mr. Comey on Thursday, and they are separately investigating Ms. James.

Mr. Trump has recently revisited his grievances against Mr. Soros, long a boogeyman for the right, in part because he has backed progressive causes. After the killing of the right-wing activist Charlie Kirk in Utah this month, the president threatened to use the levers of government to silence liberal protesters and donors to progressive groups, including Mr. Soros.

Mr. Soros began his global grant network, now known as the Open Society Foundations, decades ago to fund democratic initiatives around the world, particularly in communist and formerly communist countries. In the 1990s, the organization expanded its work to the United States. It provides grants to groups that work for human rights, democracy and equity, but Mr. Trump and some Republicans contend, without providing evidence, that it is a shadowy network promoting civil unrest, violent protests and property destruction. Liberals say the assertions are falsehoods aimed at stifling dissent.

On Monday, a lawyer in the office of the deputy attorney general, Todd Blanche, issued the directive to U.S. attorney’s offices in California, New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Detroit and Maryland, among others.

The lawyer, Aakash Singh, who is responsible for communicating with federal prosecutors around the country, suggested a wide range of charges for prosecutors to consider against the Open Society Foundations. Possible charges included racketeering, arson, wire fraud and material support for terrorism, according to a copy of the directive.

As evidence for such investigations, Mr. Singh pointed to a recent report by a conservative watchdog group known as the Capital Research Center, which monitors liberal money in politics. He asked the prosecutors to determine if the allegations were enough to justify opening criminal cases, adding that they should be prepared to submit their investigative plans soon.

Two Camera Comets in One Sky

It may look like these comets are racing, but they are not. Comets C/2025 K1 ATLAS (left) and C/2025 R2 SWAN (right) appeared near each other by chance last week in the featured image taken from France's Reunion Island in the southern Indian Ocean. Fainter Comet ATLAS is approaching our Sun and will reach its closest approach in early October when it is also expected to be its brightest - although still only likely visible with long exposures on a camera. The brighter comet, nicknamed SWAN25B, is now headed away from our Sun, although its closest approach to Earth is expected in mid-October, when optimistic estimates have it becoming bright enough to see with the unaided eye. Each comet has a greenish coma of expelled gas and an ion tail pointing away from the Sun.

Was the “Wow! Signal” Emitted from 3I/ATLAS?

The “Wow! Signal” was detected on August 15, 1977 as a strong narrowband radio signal by Ohio State University’s Big Ear radio telescope. Its origin was inferred to be extraterrestrial.

The latest natural explanation (accessible here) hypothesized that the “Wow! Signal” was caused by a sudden brightening of the hydrogen line emitted from an interstellar cloud, triggered by a strong transient radio source, such as a flare from a highly magnetized neutron star (magnetar).

The “Wow! Signal” originated from the sky coordinates of Right Ascension (RA)=19h25m=291 degrees and Declination (Dec)=-27 degrees.

On August 12, 1977, the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS was at a distance of about 600 times the Earth-Sun separation (AU) — corresponding to a light-travel time of about 3 days.

It had the sky coordinates of RA=19h40m=295 degrees and Dec=-19 degrees. These parameters can be inferred accurately given the lack of non-gravitational acceleration for 3I/ATLAS, as inferred in my latest paper (accessible here).

Hence, the “Wow! Signal” was separated by approximately 4 degrees in RA and 8 degrees in Dec from the direction of 3I/ATLAS.

The chance of two random directions in the sky being aligned to that level is about 0.6 percent. If the “Wow! Signal” originated from 3I/ATLAS, how powerful was the transmitter?

The detected intensity of the “Wow! Signal” was in the range of 54–212 Jansky with a bandwidth of about 10 kilohertz. At the distance of 600 AU, this corresponds to a source power of 0.5–2 gigawatts, the output of a typical nuclear reactor on Earth.

The “Wow! Signal” was observed at a frequency of 1420.4556±0.005 megahertz, blue-shifted by about 10 kilometers per second towards Earth relative to the central frequency of the hydrogen line.

This blueshift is of the same order of magnitude but smaller than expected from the approach velocity of 3I/ATLAS towards the Sun, 60 kilometers per second.

So far, no radio telescope reported data on 3I/ATLAS. Here’s hoping that the coincidence in the arrival direction of 3I/ATLAS and the “Wow! Signal” would motivate radio observers to check whether 3I/ATLAS shows any radio transmission around the hyperfine line of hydrogen.

This raises a broader question: in case we detect an artificial signal from an interstellar object, how should we engage with it?

The details would depend on the properties of the object. To measure these properties, we should attempt to use all telescopes on Earth and in space.

Between October 1–7, 2025 NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and ESA’s Mars orbiters Mars Express and ExoMars will observe 3I/ATLAS as it passes within 29 million kilometers from Mars.

Subsequently, between November 2–25, 2025, ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) will observe 3I/ATLAS with various instruments.

The urgency of a response would depend on the rank of the object on the Loeb Scale (see the quantitative discussions here and here).

Rank 10 would suggest an imminent threat akin to a visitor to our backyard who is capable of approaching the front door, requiring an immediate response.

But even a low rank would necessitate a contingency plan because of the major implications to humanity if the threat is realized.

We must consider the possibility of a black swan event from interstellar objects resembling a comet at large distances, but potentially carrying devastating consequences to our future like a Trojan Horse.

Our engagement could either be messaged electromagnetically through a radio or laser communication signal, or involve interceptors which cross the path of the interstellar object, land on it or take a close-up photograph.

Our interpretation of the data would be biased by our limited knowledge. In analogy with artificial intelligence (AI) systems, human reasoning is as good as its training data set.

Whereas our knowledge is restricted to experiences on Earth, our dating partner might exhibit alien designs which go well beyond our current perception of reality.

In that case, communication might be as difficult as it is for ants looking from the vantage point of a crack in a pavement at a biker passing by.

ESA’s Mars and Jupiter missions observe comet 3I/ATLAS

Comet 3I/ATLAS was first spotted on 1 July 2025 by an Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope in Río Hurtado, Chile.

Since then, Earth has been moving away from 3I/ATLAS as it approaches the Sun. The comet is now on the other side of the Sun, making it impossible to observe from Earth.

ESA is making the most of its interplanetary missions to observe the comet from much better vantage points.

Between 1 and 7 October, our Mars orbiters Mars Express and ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter will observe the comet as it passes close to Mars, with the closest distance between the spacecraft and the comet being 30 million km on 3 October.

Then between 2 and 25 November ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) will observe the comet with various instruments.

NASA’s Webb Telescope Studies Moon-Forming Disk Around Massive Planet

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has provided the first direct measurements of the chemical and physical properties of a potential moon-forming disk encircling a large exoplanet.

The carbon-rich disk surrounding the world called CT Cha b, which is located 625 light-years away from Earth, is a possible construction yard for moons, although no moons are detected in the Webb data.

The results published today in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The young star the planet orbits is only 2 million years old and still accreting circumstellar material. However, the circumplanetary disk discovered by Webb is not part of the larger accretion disk around the central star. The two objects are 46 billion miles apart.

Observing planet and moon formation is fundamental to understanding the evolution of planetary systems across our galaxy. Moons likely outnumber planets, and some might be habitats for life as we know it. But we are only now entering an era where we can witness their formation.

This discovery fosters a better understanding of planet and moon formation, say researchers. Webb’s data is invaluable for making comparisons to our solar system's birth over 4 billion years ago.

“We can see evidence of the disk around the companion, and we can study the chemistry for the first time.

We're not just witnessing moon formation — we're also witnessing this planet’s formation,” said co-lead author Sierra Grant of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington.

“We are seeing what material is accreting to build the planet and moons,” added main lead author Gabriele Cugno of the University of Zürich and member of the National Center of Competence in Research PlanetS.

Dissecting starlight

Infrared observations of CT Cha b were made with Webb’s MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) using its medium resolution spectrograph.

An initial look into Webb’s archival data revealed signs of molecules within the circumplanetary disk, which motivated a deeper dive into the data.

Because the planet’s faint signal is buried in the glare of the host star, the researchers had to disentangle the light of the star from the planet using high-contrast methods.

“We saw molecules at the location of the planet, and so we knew that there was stuff in there worth digging for and spending a year trying to tease out of the data. It really took a lot of perseverance,” said Grant.

Ultimately, the team discovered seven carbon-bearing molecules within the planet’s disk, including acetylene (C2H2) and benzene (C6H6).

This carbon-rich chemistry is in stark contrast to the chemistry seen in the disk around the host star, where the researchers found water but no carbon.

The difference between the two disks offers evidence for their rapid chemical evolution over only than 2 million years.

Genesis of moons

A circumplanetary disk has long been hypothesized as the birthplace of Jupiter’s four major moons. These Galilean satellites must have condensed out of such a flattened disk billions of years ago, as evident in their co-planar orbits about Jupiter.

The two outermost Galilean moons, Ganymede and Callisto, are 50% water ice. But they presumably have rocky cores, perhaps either of carbon or silicon.

“We want to learn more about how our solar system formed moons. This means that we need to look at other systems that are still under construction. We’re trying to understand how it all works,” said Cugno.

“How do these moons come to be? What are their ingredients? What physical processes are at play, and over what timescales? Webb allows us to witness the drama of moon formation and investigate these questions observationally for the first time.”

In the coming year, the team will use Webb to perform a comprehensive survey of similar objects, to better understand the diversity of physical and chemical properties in the disks around young planets.

IAC 2025 If the USA’s space strategy succeeds, it will run a “village” on the moon in a decade, NASA administrator Sean Duffy told the International Aeronautical Congress (IAC) in Sydney today.

Duffy appeared in a session featuring the heads of space agencies from the USA, China, Japan, India, Europe, and Canada. Readers will likely have noted the absence of Russia, a longtime space player, from that list.

The NASA boss seemingly hinted at one reason Russia’s space boss is not at the Congress when he said the USA “comes in peace” to space. “We have not been in the business of taking people’s land,” Duffy said.

Asked what success looks like for NASA in a decade, Duffy said “We are going to have sustained human life on the moon. Not just an outpost, but a village.”

And a nuclear-powered village at that after NASA recently issued an RFI seeking commercial help to build a nuclear reactor on Luna

Duffy also predicted that a decade from now NASA will also have “made leaps and bounds on our mission to get to Mars” and “be on the cusp of putting human boots on Mars.”

The theme for this year’s IAC is “Sustainable Space: Resilient Earth”. Duffy’s take on that is how to sustain human life in space, an objective he said is NASA’s prerogative because it alone among US government agencies has a remit for exploration.

He pointed out that other US government agencies have the job of considering terrestrial stability and earthly resilience, and that NASA must focus on exploration,

The other space agency heads at the event took a different view.

When European Space Agency (ESA) director general Josef Ashbacher had his turn on stage, he offered a very different vision of sustainability by pointing out that the agency he leads freely shares data from its earth observation satellites.

“I am glad that we at ESA are working for the betterment of the planet,” he said.

V Narayanan, the chair of India’s Space Research Organization (ISRO) said ensuring food and water resources is his agency’s top goal in space.

Lisa Campbell, the President of the Canadian Space Agency said that when her country first orbited an earth observation satellite it had to pay private sector organizations to use its data.

The president of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Dr Hiroshi Yamakawa, reminded attendees that Japan recently launched its third greenhouse gas observation satellite.

The deputy administrator of China’s National Space Agency (CNSA) Zhigang Bian said his country has launched 500 earth observation satellites.

He sent a little murmur around the auditorium when he said China participates in a constellation of such sats shared by members of the BRICS bloc – a loose alliance that recently expanded its membership beyond Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Diplomatic types see BRICS expansion as China developing institutions that rival existing blocs – on Earth and in space.

Zhigang also said China is working to make space sustainable with new measures to track orbiting debris, manage traffic in space, and provide alerts to warn if spacecraft are at risk.

He said China believes those measures are necessary because the growing mega-constellations of broadband satellites increases risks for all users of space.

“China is currently researching active removal of space debris,” he said.

JAXA’s Dr Yamakawa said Japan’s private sector outfit Astroscale is probably three years away from capturing and de-orbiting a satellite, but that doing so won’t solve the space junk problem.

“We think the debris issue is one we must cope with,” he said. “There is not enough time to solve for this.”

Dr Yamakawa also suggested collaboration between spacefaring nations makes extraterrestrial exploration more sustainable, and pointed to the forthcoming JAXA/ISRO collaboration on the Lunar Polar Exploration (LUPEX) mission that will see a Japanese H3 rocket carry an Indian lander and a Japanese rover.

ISRO’s V Narayanan said the mission will supersize India’s previous Chandrayaan moon missions, by sending a 6,800kg lander and 300kg rover, up from the 600kgs and 25kgs sent by 2023’s Chandrayaan-3 mission.

SpaceX Falcon 9 launch paints glowing 'jellyfish' across Western US skies

Parts of the Western United States were treated to a cosmic spectacle Sunday evening, as a giant streak illuminated the skies from Los Angeles to Phoenix.

Minutes after SpaceX's Sept. 28 Starlink launch lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Station (VSFS), in California, the Falcon 9 rocket supporting the mission reached the upper atmosphere to create a phenomenon often referred to as a "jellyfish" effect.

Falcon 9 launched at 11:04 p.m. EDT (7:04 p.m. local PDT; 0204 GMT, Sept. 29). The rocket carried 28 new Starlink satellites to join SpaceX's growing wireless internet megaconstellation of over 8,000 networked spacecraft.

The dusk liftoff provided ideal conditions for the setting sun to illuminate Falcon 9's expanding engine exhaust against the darkening sky, as onlookers for hundreds of miles gazed in amazement.

The density of Earth's upper atmosphere causes the exhaust plume of a rocket's engines to expand as it ascends.

The launch site at Vandenberg Space Force Base is notorious for its overcast and extremely foggy conditions, but Sunday's clear skies created the ideal conditions for Falcon 9's jellyfish to emerge.

Among the many treated to the skyward spectacle, Space.com's Managing Editor Brett Tingley managed to snap a photo of the phenomenon as the rocket flew over Afton Canyon, in the Mojave Desert.

"I was camping in Afton Canyon in the Mojave National Preserve when I noticed a colorful streak of light in the sky. I've seen plenty of Falcon 9 'jellyfish' online but never in person." Tingley said.

"It was lit up gorgeously from below by the setting sun and made for a surprising start to a night of dark sky stargazing."

Sightings were also reported to the American Meteor Society (AMC), which tracks and triangulates anomalies in the sky (usually meteorites) using witness submission data.

Last night's launch prompted seven different fireball reports to the website, with a video from spectators in Phoenix, Arizona, wondering if the long streak moving across the sky might be a comet.

Sunday's launch was the 28th mission for this particular Falcon 9 first stage, which landed downrange on SpaceX's droneship "Of Course I Still Love You," in the Pacific Ocean about 8.5 minutes after liftoff.

The rocket's second stage continued to orbit, successfully deploying the satellites into low Earth orbit (LEO).

Sights like last night's aren't super rare, but can sometimes be hard to predict.

Launches near dawn and dusk most often create the conditions for the jellyfish phenomenon, so if you live within a few hundred miles of a launchpad, keep your eyes to the skies.

It is shocking to consider that a Jew could be a Nazi. Yet a few rare exceptions were, and received the title of "Honorary Aryan" from the Führer. he "Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories" submitted its report (A/79/363) to the United Nations General Assembly on September 20 [1].

It cautiously names what it observed. It writes, "The facts recorded in the present report lead the Special Committee to conclude that Israeli policies and practices implemented during the period under review display elements characteristic of genocide."

It is now clear to all: the State of Israel, under the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu, is committing genocide. One-third of the Israeli population has demonstrated against him, and two-thirds oppose his current military actions. So how did the self-proclaimed "only democracy in the Middle East" get to this point?

To understand this, we must first distinguish between the various Jewish communities in the Diaspora and the Jewish population of Israel. The reactions of each vary greatly, even though Jewish communities as a whole persist in believing that Israel is potentially their "safe haven" in the event of an anti-Semitic threat.

Next, we must acknowledge that Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government, since December 2022, bears no relation to previous governments. Only the Jews of the European Diaspora have failed to understand this, while those of the American Diaspora, for example, have already massively disassociated themselves from Benjamin Netanyahu’s crimes.

Three months after his accession to power, in early March 2023, I explained in these columns [2] that the Israeli government coalition had given itself a roadmap for a gradual coup d’état, the main stages of which I outlined. I also identified the group behind this project: the Revisionist Zionists of Vladimir Jabotinsky (1890-1940) and their American Straussian allies. I explained that the Jewish supremacists Itamar Ben-Gvir (Minister of National Security) and Bezalel Smotrich (Minister of Finance), although claiming to be followers of Rabbi Meir Kahane, were themselves Revisionist Zionists since Kahane was an agent of them in the United States.

Yet, while Jewish communities have always been the scene of heated disputes, they unite in persuading themselves that none of their members ever allied themselves with Nazism. Yet Jews are like other men, and among them, some have allied themselves with the Nazis. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who attempted to address this issue during an interview on Italian television in May 2022, was forced to swallow his remarks. It is true that he had been imprudent enough to speak of Volodymyr Zelensky’s Jewishness and not that of Benjamin Netanyahu. However, the two men today share the same ideology, and the remark directed at one could also be directed at the other.

The relationships between revisionist Zionists and fascists on the one hand, and the Nazis on the other, have still not been studied as such. At most, we know that David Ben-Gurion described Jabotinsky as "certainly a fascist and perhaps a Nazi."

Fascism is a cult of violence. Nazism, on the other hand, is an ideology of racial hierarchy. Fascism undertakes massacres, Nazism commits genocides.

• We still have the greatest difficulty addressing Jabotinsky’s relationship with Duce Benito Mussolini. Yet it was under the latter’s auspices that he founded Betar in the suburbs of Rome.

• The Nazis’ relations with the Jews were never completely hostile. Reinhard Heydrich took a stand in Das Schwarze Korps in May 1935 to distinguish between enemies, that is, assimilationist Jews, and friends, namely Jews who favored their emigration to Palestine. He reiterated this distinction several times, including when he organized the "final solution." His aim was not to exterminate all Jews, but only those who did not subscribe to racial theories and who did not aspire to create a "Jewish empire."

From 1933 to 1939, the Nazis allowed German Jews to emigrate to British Mandatory Palestine on the condition that they sell their property in Germany and recoup its value in the form of German exports to Palestine. Revisionist Zionists were the main promoters of this agreement (known as the "Haavara Agreement," or "Transfer Agreement"), which was reviled by most of the diaspora [3].

• In April 1935, the Nazi authorities authorized Betar to wear black uniforms because they considered this movement the best supporter of these agreements [4].

• In an interview with Joseph Goebbels’s daily newspaper Der Angriff (The Attack) in September 1935, the Revisionist Zionist banker Georg Kareski defended the Nuremberg Racial Laws. He explained that they were in line with the laws proposed by the Revisionist Zionists: "The Nuremberg Laws of September 15, 1935, apart from their constitutional provisions, seem to me to be entirely in line with such mutual respect for the specificity of each people. The interruption of the process of dissolution of many Jewish communities, encouraged by mixed marriages, is, from a Jewish point of view, entirely welcome. For the establishment of a Jewish national existence in Palestine, these factors, religion and family, are of decisive importance."

• In 1936, in an interview with the communist newspaper New Masses, Jabotinsky declared: “Revisionism is naive, brutal, and primitive. It is savage. You go out into the street and take any man—a Chinese man—and ask him what he wants, and he will answer you 100%. That’s us. We want a Jewish empire. Just as there are Italian or French empires in the Mediterranean, we want a Jewish empire. […] Palestine must be the homeland of ten or twelve million Jews.” [5]

The Zionists dreamed of a Jewish “national home,” the Revisionist Zionists of a Jewish “empire.”

• In 1937, the Revisionist Zionists also supported the Franco-Polish project known as the “Madagascar Plan.” This was again intended to oppose assimilationism and encourage the transfer to Madagascar to build a Jewish empire there.

• It was not until 1938 that the German Revisionist Zionist Party (Staatszionisten) was dissolved.

• Jabotinsky died at the beginning of World War II while in exile in New York. Ben-Gurion opposed the return of his remains to Israel. However, the Revisionist Zionists continued to work with the Nazis.

• Throughout the war, the Hungarian “revisionist Zionist” Rezső Kasztner negotiated in secret with the Nazis. He even met with Adolf Eichmann, probably in 1944, and informed figures such as David Ben-Gurion. He claimed to have obtained permission to flee for those who would buy their freedom. He collected at least 8.6 million Swiss francs, but sent them to their deaths. At the end of the war, he became spokesman for the Israeli Minister of Trade and Industry. However, he was impeached in 1953, accused of having deceived Hungarian Jews and robbed them. He became a hated figure in Israel and was assassinated during his trial. According to the recent book by historian Nadav Kaplan, his elimination was allegedly a secret service operation ordered by David Ben-Gurion [6]. The question has been asked as to who benefited from Rezső Kasztner’s maneuvers: the Nazis alone, or also the "revisionist Zionists"? In other words, did the two groups work together against Hungarian Jews?

In a 1960 interview with Life, Eichmann claimed that Kasztner "had agreed to do everything possible to ensure that the Jews would not resist their deportation, and even that they would behave properly in the regroupment camps. If I closed my eyes and allowed a few hundred or a few thousand young Jews to emigrate to Palestine, that would have been a good deal." In other words, he would have sacrificed 450,000 Hungarian Jews to save 1,684 Revisionist Jews.

• All these cases resurfaced when Judge Benjamin Halevy, who had ruled in the Rezső Kasztner case, was forced to preside over the trial of SS officer Adolf Eichmann. Eichmann confirmed that he was a member of a Revisionist Zionist association. This was obviously impossible to verify, but Anna Arendt, who attended the trial, was convinced of it. From that moment on, the Soviets denounced the collusion between the revisionist Zionists and the Nazis, but the West, not examining their claims, called Khrushchev an anti-Semite.

During the post-war period, revisionist Zionists became entrenched in the Mossad, under the authority of Yitzhak Shamir. They committed various crimes in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, under the protection of the CIA during the Cold War. It was during this time that they recruited SS Special Forces commander Otto Skrozeny.

Now, when we witness the massacre of Palestinian civilians, under the pretext of eliminating Hamas, which in any case no longer has the means to retaliate, we can only wonder if Benjamin Netanyahu, too, is behaving like a Nazi?

To be clear, Benjamin Netanyahu, who had always refused to speak of "Greater Israel," mentioned it during an interview on i24News in Hebrew a month ago, on August 23, 2025. He was answering questions from journalist Sharon Gal, a former MK for the Yisrael Beytenu party. The latter gave him an amulet, not seen on screen, depicting "a map of the Promised Land," that of "Greater Israel." He then asked him if he felt close to this idea. Provocatively, the Prime Minister replied that he felt invested with a "historical and spiritual mission" and that he was "very" attached to the vision of a "Greater Israel." [7]

The report of the UN "Special Committee" is not simply an expert opinion on which the judges of the International Court of Justice can rely. It also poses a question to us: have we drawn the right conclusions from the gradual regime change in Israel?

Israelis who refuse to face the truth will be Netanyahu’s next victims: just as the Nazis killed the German democrats, the revisionist Zionists will have no regard for them.

Chinese astronauts add debris shielding to Tiangong space station during 6-hour spacewalk

China's Tiangong space station just got some more protection against debris strikes.

Two astronauts from the three-person Shenzhou 20 mission installed additional shielding on Tiangong during a six-hour spacewalk on Friday (Sept. 26), according to the state-run broadcaster CCTV.

It was the fourth spacewalk of the Shenzhou 20 mission, which arrived at Tiangong on April 24.

Beefing up Tiangong's debris shield is apparently a Shenzhou 20 priority; similar work was done during extravehicular activities (EVAs) on both May 22 and Aug. 15.

Taikonauts Chen Zhongrui and Wang Jie ventured outside Tiangong during Friday's EVA, while fellow crewmate Chen Dong remained inside the T-shaped, three-module station, according to CCTV.

The two spacewalkers accomplished all of their prescribed tasks, which included "the installation of debris protection devices and the inspection and maintenance of external equipment," CCTV wrote in a description of the activities.

Tiangong is about 20% as massive as the International Space Station, but that may change: Chinese officials have said that they're considering adding more modules to the outpost.

Shenzhou 20 is the ninth crewed mission to Tiangong. Its three taikonauts are in the home stretch of their space stay; crewed flights to the orbiting outpost last about six months.

The mystery behind Venus' giant, crown-shaped geological features, known as coronae, may finally have an explanation:

A "glass ceiling" in Venus' mantle is trapping heat and driving slow, shifting currents that might lead to the formation of the crown-like surface features, scientists propose in a new study.

"On Venus, there is a pattern that is telling us something," Madeleine Kerr, a doctoral candidate at the University of San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the study's lead author, said in a statement.

"We think what we found is the key to unlocking the mystery of the origin of these coronae."

Venus and Earth are considered "twin" planets because they have roughly the same size, bulk density and distance from the sun.

However, the planets' surfaces indicate that they diverged on their evolutionary paths, leading to two substantially different worlds. One such difference is these coronae, which are unique to Venus.

Scientists have mapped more than 700 coronae across Venus' surface, and they span a wide range of sizes and features. Yet their origin is still a puzzle, given that Venus is covered in a single, continuous crust — unlike Earth, which has shifting tectonic plates.

Some hypotheses link the formation of Venus' larger coronae — those bigger than 310 miles (500 kilometers) in diameter — to mantle plumes and tectonic processes such as subduction and the delamination of denser parts of the planet's crust, the research team wrote in the study, published Sept. 16 in the journal PNAS. The smaller coronae — those with a mean diameter of about 124 miles (200 km) — on the other hand, can be attributed to smaller hot upwellings in the mantle, like blobs of wax rising in a lava lamp.

However, these theories have been difficult to substantiate.

Martyr or Liar? Comey Indicted on Two Counts

Below is my column in the New York Post on the indictment of James Comey. As I mentioned yesterday, the indictment seemed a bit disjointed in referring to “false statements” in the caption and the body, but only describing a single false statement.It appears that the grand jury did not return a “true bill” on one of the originally alleged false statements. That might have been the count related to Professor Daniel Richman, who appeared before the Grand Jury, but that is speculation at this point.However, as I noted, there appears to have been material removed from the original draft of the indictment.

Here is the column:

Yesterday,James Comey became the first former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to be indicted for a federal crime. That is likely the only fact upon which you will receive anything close to agreement in the country. For some, the two-count indictment is along-overdue accountabilityfor a man who pushed through the now-debunked Russian collusion investigation. For others, it is another abuse on President Donald Trump’s revenge tour.

There are legitimate concerns about the targeting of a political critic of the President, particularly after he publicly complained just days ago that Attorney General Pam Bondi was not indicting Comey and others.

However, Comey is hardly the pristine model of “ethical leadership” that he described in his book. Putting aside his critical role in the Russian collusion investigation, Comey tossed aside even the pretense of ethics after Trump fired him.

The Inspector General, Michael Horowitz, issued a scathing report that found Comey was a leaker and had violated FBI policy in his handling of FBI memos. On his way out of the Bureau, Comey stole FBI materials, including those containing the “code name and true identity” of a sensitive source.

While he did not find that he disclosed the classified information, Horowitz found that Comey took “the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive investigative information, obtained during the course of FBI employment, in order to achieve a personally desired outcome.” He further added that Comey “set a dangerous example for the over 35,000 current FBI employees—and the many thousands of more former FBI employees—who similarly have access to or knowledge of non-public information.”

Comey later admitted that he asked his friend, Columbia Law Professor Daniel Richman, to leak information from the documents to the New York Times.

Comey’s close associate, former Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, stated that Comey did instruct him to leak information to the media. Comey denied that repeatedly under oath.

James Baker, FBI general counsel and a close adviser to Comey, also told investigators that he was “under the belief” that he was “ultimately instructed and authorizedto [provide information to the Times] by then FBI Director James Comey.”

That sets up a straightforward question: who is lying?It could also set up a bizarre scene of McCabe testifying against his friend. McCabe despises Trump as much as Comey, so he may prove to be an overtly hostile witness for the prosecutors.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he is open to granting Hamas amnesty if the Palestinian militant group frees the remaining hostages and leaves Gaza.

The pledge marks a shift from Netanyahu’s long-held stance that the war can only end with the complete dismantling of Hamas, including its leadership.

In a Fox News interview on Sunday, Netanyahu appeared to confirm leaked details of a peace plan by US President Donald Trump, suggesting the group could be offered immunity.

“If Hamas leaders, for example, are escorted out of the country, yeah, if they finish the war, release all the hostages, we’ll let them out,” he said.

“All of that, I think, is part of the plan. I’m not going to pre-empt it, because we’re having these discussions right now.”

According to Trump’s plan, reported by the Times of Israel, Hamas leaders would be granted safe passage out of Gaza if the 48 remaining hostages are freed within 48 hours of Israel’s public acceptance.

In exchange, Israel would release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners serving life terms, over 1,000 Gazans detained since the war began, and the remains of several hundred Palestinians killed in the conflict.

The plan also states that Hamas members who commit to “peaceful coexistence” would receive amnesty, while those choosing to leave Gaza would be given safe passage to third countries.

Other provisions in the 21-point plan include the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid and a pledge by Israel not to launch further strikes on Qatar.

Netanyahu said he would discuss the clause with the Trump administration but declined to say whether Israel would commit to it.

Netanyahu’s statements came amid Israel’s continued bombardment of Gaza.

Its large-scale ground offensive in Gaza City has leveled neighborhoods and forced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to flee to tent camps – an operation Netanyahu says is aimed at destroying Hamas.

The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas killed 1,200 people in Israel and seized over 250 hostages.

Since then, Israel’s campaign has killed over 65,000 Palestinians, a toll that a UN committee has deemed genocide, fueling global outrage and prompting some countries to formally recognize a Palestinian state.

Washington will be glued to any such trial.The only thing more unnerving than the alleged targeting of a political critic in Washington is the prosecution of a leaker. This is a city that floats on a rolling sea of leaks. The Justice Department is notorious for leaks made with lethal effect against targets. Now the former FBI director will stand trial to see if he is a leaker and a liar.

There is one individual who is likely to be watching with particular interest and perhaps satisfaction: former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Comey is facing two counts of making false statements and obstructing a congressional proceeding. The first count under 18 U.S.C. 1001 (a)(2) is the exact charge that Comey engineered against Flynn.

Comey gave a book tour where he thrilled audiences about how he secured a criminal charge against Flynn for making false statements. In one event, an audience cheered as Comey took credit for the controversial charge. He explained that what he did was not exactly proper. It was, he explained,

“something we’ve, I probably wouldn’t have done or maybe gotten away with in a more organized investigation, a more organized administration…I thought, ‘It’s early enough, let’s just send a couple of guys over.’”

The actual agents who interviewed Flynn did not believe that he intentionally lied about a meeting with Russian diplomats, but Comey and his investigators pushed for charges anyway. They drained Flynn of resources, threatened to indict his son, and ultimately secured a guilty plea.

Now it will be Comey in the dock, facing a charge of making a false statement. He will do so as someone who has admitted to improperly removing FBI material and leaking information to the media.

The odds still favor Comey. He will have a jury taken from a generally liberal, Democratic jury pool. He is also a sophisticated player. Perhaps that is why he issued a videotaped message saying effectively “bring it on” and let’s go to trial.

While an improvement over Comey’s bizarre seashell messages, the videotape may be too confident. Perjury or false statements can be challenging to prove, particularly when vague or nuanced language is used. This is neither vague nor nuanced. Comey repeatedly swore that he never asked anyone at the FBI to leak information. That is either true or it is not.

Comey will continue to be vilified and lionized by different parts of the population. Yet, this is an ignoble moment that he helped bring about.

Notably, this indictment comes 50 years after the only Attorney General was convicted of crimes (including false statements and obstruction). That was John Mitchell after the Watergate scandal.

Now the man who bragged about nailing Michael Flynn will face the same false statement charge. The man who celebrated the charging of Donald Trump (including obstruction-related charges) will face his own obstruction charge.

Whether karma or lawfare, Comey will now have his day in court.

The Ukrainian authorities have shown no desire to continue dialogue with Russia despite prior agreements reached in Istanbul to set up working groups, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

“During the last meeting in Istanbul, the delegations put forward proposals to create working groups to discuss all modalities on key issues.

Now, a pause has occurred. The pause is due to the Kiev regime’s unwillingness to continue the dialogue,” Peskov said during press briefing.

Peskov was responding to a question from journalists about Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who said last week that he would like to speak with Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky.

“Vladimir Alexandrovich [Zelensky] needs to calm down - there is a good proposal on the table,” Lukashenko said Friday, adding only that it had earlier been discussed with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Direct talks between Moscow and Kiev resumed in Türkiye early this year.

Three rounds of negotiations, the last of which was conducted in July, have not yielded any major breakthroughs, but have allowed the two sides to make certain progress with regard to various humanitarian issues.

Russia and Ukraine have held several major prisoner swaps, as well as exchanged the bodies of fallen soldiers.

Moscow has repeatedly stated it is open to a peaceful resolution of the hostilities at any time but has maintained that any deal must address the roots of the conflict and respect the realities on the ground.

This includes the status of the former Ukrainian territories that joined Russia after public referendums.

Kiev, on the other hand, is seeking a complete and unconditional ceasefire, security guarantees and has territorial claims of its own that it insists must be addressed in any talks.

Comey just happened to land a Biden appointee as the judge in the case. It’s an uphill battle that at worst may bankrupt Comey.

The indictment is a good start—a tug on the plug over the drain of the swamp. Trump has a long way to go and a short time to get there.

Between Comey’s indictment and the Supreme Court upholding Trump not funding Democrat pet projects, the press had a long sad-faced weekend.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced a Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances(FACE) Act lawsuit on Monday against pro-Palestine protestors who allegedly targeted a synagogue in New Jersey during a Nov. 2024 demonstration that turned violent.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon believes this is the first time the FACE Act, which the Biden administration used to target pro-life activists, has been used to civilly prosecute an attack on a house of worship.

“In recent years, there have been numerous attacks on synagogues throughout the United States,” Dhillon said during a press conference. “Yet there has been a lack of the use of the FACE Act to stop these heinous attacks.”

“The past administration only applied the FACE Act civil enforcement penalties to silence pro-life protestors while ignoring the same 1994 law was intended to protect pro-life crisis pregnancy centers and, importantly, houses of worship,” she said.

Protestors “engaged in a coordinated effort to intimidate and disrupt Jewish worshipers at a religious event held at the synagogue Congregation Ohr Torah,” which included “physical assaults on worshipers Moshe Glick and David Silberberg, antisemitic and threatening chants, and defiance of police orders,” according to the complaint.

Silberberg was placed in a chokehold by defendant Altaf Sharif after another defendant, Eric Camins, identified him as “the Jew.”

“Some of the protestors carried and blew vuvuzelas, horns capable of causing hearing damage, while shouting at Jewish residents as they passed their neighborhoods,” Dhillon said. “The group marched onto synagog property, blowing the vuvuzelas and shouting to drown out a memorial service and a Torah sermon.”

Along with six individual defendants, the complaint names the New Jersey chapters of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, as well as American Muslims for Palestine, as defendants, noting both organizations have a history of organizing anti-Israel protests that have involved “violence or incitement.”

Dhillon confirmed during the press conference that there are other ongoing FACE Act investigations. She suggested during an April interview with the Daily Caller News Foundation that there could be “different applications” of the law.

“The FACE Act can be used to protect clinics where women get counseling about their options for abortion, and 200 of those have been violently attacked, firebombed, picketed and otherwise been obstructed over the last few years with zero action from the DOJ,” she previously told the DCNF.

The DOJ issued a memo in January promising to end the “weaponization” of the FACE Act. President Donald Trump pardoned 23 pro-life activists prosecuted by the Biden administration in January.

“These violent protesters meant their actions for evil, but we will use this case to bring forth good: the protection of all Americans’ religious liberty,” Dhilon said.

The unrealized potential of Palestinian oil and gas reserves

Oil and natural gas resources in the occupied Palestinian territory could generate hundreds of billions of dollars for development.

Geologists and resources economists have confirmed that the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) lies above sizeable reservoirs of oil and natural gas wealth, in Area C of the West Bank and the Mediterranean coast off the Gaza Strip, according to a recent UNCTAD study.

New discoveries of natural gas in the Levant Basin are in the range of 122 trillion cubic foot while recoverable oil is estimated at 1.7 billion barrels, according to the study, entitled “The Economic Cost of Occupation for the Palestinian People: The Unrealized Oil and Natural Gas Potential.”

This offers an opportunity to distribute and share about US$524 billion among the different parties in the region and promote peace and cooperation among old belligerents, the study notes.

These funds could finance socioeconomic development in the oPt as part of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

However, so far the Palestinian people have been prohibited from exploiting the oil and gas reserves in their own land and water to meet their energy needs and generate fiscal and export revenues.

This increases both the opportunity costs and the total costs borne by the Palestinian people as a result of occupation, the study states.

Assessing economic cost of occupation

In a number of UN General Assembly resolutions, UNCTAD has been asked to assess and report on the economic cost of occupation borne by the Palestinian people.

The study focuses on oil and natural gas due to their high value and critical importance in potentially meeting basic Palestinian needs for energy, and fiscal and export revenues.

It identifies and assesses existing and potential Palestinian oil and natural gas reserves that could be exploited.

Also critical are the new oil and natural gas finds in the Eastern Mediterranean that Israel has begun to exploit for its own benefit, while these resources may be considered shared resources, as the oil and natural gas exist in common pools.

“What could be a source of wealth and opportunities could prove disastrous if these common resources are exploited individually and exclusively, without due regard for international law and norms,” the study warns.

Costs enormous and escalating

Israel’s exploitation of Palestinian natural resources, including oil and natural gas, imposes on the Palestinian people enormous costs that escalate as the occupation remains in effect, the study cautions.

It highlights the peculiarities of oil and natural gas as non-renewable resources, arguing that current generations are not necessarily the only owners of these resources that straddle national borders and can thus be jointly owned by multiple states and generations.

It also recommends further detailed studies to clearly establish the Palestinian people’s right to their separate natural resources, as well as their rightful share in the common resources collectively owned by several neighbouring states in the region, including Israel.

The study comes ahead of the release of UNCTAD’s report on its assistance to the Palestinian people, slated for 10 September.

President Trump releases the outline of the negotiated agreement to end the conflict in Gaza.

President Donald J. Trump’s Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict:

1. Gaza will be a deradicalized terror-free zone that does not pose a threat to its neighbors.

2. Gaza will be redeveloped for the benefit of the people of Gaza, who have suffered more than enough.

3. If both sides agree to this proposal, the war will immediately end. Israeli forces will withdraw to the agreed upon line to prepare for a hostage release. During this time, all military operations, including aerial and artillery bombardment, will be suspended, and battle lines will remain frozen until conditions are met for the complete staged withdrawal.

4. Within 72 hours of Israel publicly accepting this agreement, all hostages, alive and deceased, will be returned.

5. Once all hostages are released, Israel will release 250 life sentence prisoners plus 1700 Gazans who were detained after October 7th, 2023, including all women and children detained in that context. For every Israeli hostage whose remains are released, Israel will release the remains of 15 deceased Gazans.

6. Once all hostages are returned, Hamas members who commit to peaceful co-existence and to decommission their weapons will be given amnesty. Members of Hamas who wish to leave Gaza will be provided safe passage to receiving countries.

7. Upon acceptance of this agreement, full aid will be immediately sent into the Gaza Strip. At a minimum, aid quantities will be consistent with what was included in the January 19, 2025, agreement regarding humanitarian aid, including rehabilitation of infrastructure (water, electricity, sewage), rehabilitation of hospitals and bakeries, and entry of necessary equipment to remove rubble and open roads.

8. Entry of distribution and aid in the Gaza Strip will proceed without interference from the two parties through the United Nations and its agencies, and the Red Crescent, in addition to other international institutions not associated in any manner with either party. Opening the Rafah crossing in both directions will be subject to the same mechanism implemented under the January 19, 2025, agreement.

9. Gaza will be governed under the temporary transitional governance of a technocratic, apolitical Palestinian committee, responsible for delivering the day-to-day running of public services and municipalities for the people in Gaza. This committee will be made up of qualified Palestinians and international experts, with oversight and supervision by a new international transitional body, the “Board of Peace,” which will be headed and chaired by President Donald J. Trump, with other members and heads of State to be announced, including Former Prime Minister Tony Blair. This body will set the framework and handle the funding for the redevelopment of Gaza until such time as the Palestinian Authority has completed its reform program, as outlined in various proposals, including President Trump’s peace plan in 2020 and the Saudi-French proposal, and can securely and effectively take back control of Gaza. This body will call on best international standards to create modern and efficient governance that serves the people of Gaza and is conducive to attracting investment.

10. A Trump economic development plan to rebuild and energize Gaza will be created by convening a panel of experts who have helped birth some of the thriving modern miracle cities in the Middle East. Many thoughtful investment proposals and exciting development ideas have been crafted by well-meaning international groups and will be considered to synthesize the security and governance frameworks to attract and facilitate these investments that will create jobs, opportunity, and hope for future Gaza.

Mark Francis Ford, 64, was cuffed in Indiana on Thursday for charges stemming from allegations at a Roman Catholic church in New Orleans where he used to serve.

An unidentified man, now 31, alleged that Ford began abusing him in 2004, when he was just 10 years old, after meeting the Vincentian priest through a program he ran for children with disabilities.

The exact circumstances of the abuse were not clear, but the man — who is under his mother’s permanent tutorship — said it continued until around 2022 or 2023, long after the clergyman had left the priesthood for greener pastures in government.

Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California told “CNN News Central” co-host Kate Bolduan on Monday that House Democrats planned to go after private citizens working with the Trump administration after the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey.

A federal grand jury indicted Comey on charges of lying to Congress and obstruction on Thursday over testimony given during a September 2020 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. Swalwell expressed confidence Democrats would take control of the House in the 2026 midterm elections. (RELATED: Former Federal Prosecutor Breaks Down How Comey Leaked Details To Media)

“Well, first, we’re making it clear that we’re going into the majority a year from now,” Swalwell told Bolduan. “We have every intention to do that, and so we will bring oversight, accountability, we will subpoena the Department of Justice, but also private actors who have done these drug deals with the administration, college campuses, entertainment companies, law firms and so accountability is coming.”

“And so, one, it’s all coming out, two, I hope that deters people from doing more of these deals, these one-offs with the president,” Swalwell continued. “One other point, though, on Comey, Kate, this happened when Donald Trump was president. So if you’re trying to tell me this is not politically motivated, the statement that they’re referring to where he allegedly lied, Donald Trump was president, so why didn’t you indict him then? The fact that he’s indicting him now just makes it look even more politically motivated, and so I’m pretty confident that this will either be dismissed or Mr. Comey will be acquitted by a jury of his peers.”

Multiple law firms also reached agreements with the Trump administration following orders that curtailed their attorneys’ access to classified information after he accused them of engaging in lawfare against conservatives. In 2022, Kirkland and Ellis ousted former Solicitor General Paul Clement and other attorneys who represented an NRA-backed challenge to “discretionary issue” concealed carry permit laws after they refused to cease Second Amendment litigation.

President Donald Trump will attend Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s large gathering of top U.S. military officials in Virginia this week.

The president classified the meeting to NBC News asjust a “very nice meeting talking about how well we’re doing militarily, talking about being in great shape, talking about a lot of good, positive things.”

“We have some great people coming in, and it’s just an esprit de corps. You know the expression ‘esprit de corps?’” Trump said in a phone interview. “That’s all it’s about. We’re talking about what we’re doing, what they’re doing, and how we’re doing.”

As Breitbart News reported last week, Hegseth ordered hundreds of U.S. military leaders, including generals and admirals, to gather on short notice this coming Tuesday at a U.S. Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia. According to the Washington Post, the directive included “virtually all of the military’s top commanders worldwide.” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed to the Post that Hegseth “will be addressing his senior military leaders early next week,” while offering no further details. He also expressed no concerns about the meeting.

“There are about 800 generals and admirals spread across the United States and dozens of other countries and time zones,” noted the Post. Hegseth’s order …applies to all senior officers with the rank of brigadier general or above, or their Navy equivalent, serving in command positions and their top enlisted advisers.”

“Top commanders in conflict zones and senior military leaders stationed throughout Europe, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region are among those expected to attend Hegseth’s meeting, said people familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to publicly discuss the issue,” the outlet added.

One source said military officials could not recall seeing such an order previously, sparking concern.

“People are very concerned. They have no idea what it means,”one source told the Post.

Both President Trump and Vice President JD Vance have dismissed those concerns.

“It’s actually not unusual at all, and I think it’s odd that you guys have made it into such a big story,”Vance told reporters.
