NASA closes doors to 15,000 employees as US government shutdown begins

More than 15,000 NASA civil servants have been furloughed as the U.S. federal government enters a shutdown.

The grinding halt forces NASA and other agencies to scale back nearly all of their day-to-day operations after lawmakers in Washington D.C. failed to pass a government funding bill by the deadline.

Only a fraction of NASA's workforce remains on duty, assigned to missions that cannot be paused without risking astronaut safety, critical hardware, or the Trump administration’s highest priorities.

With most science programs and public-facing activities frozen, the shutdown leaves NASA in a holding pattern until Congress approves new funding.

NASA's updated shutdown plan, released Sept. 29, outlines how the agency will operate during the funding lapse, and confirms the scale of furloughs now underway.

Out of NASA's 18,218 civil servants, 15,094 have been sent home, while a little more than 3,100 are classified as "excepted" and remain on the job.

By comparison, NASA's August 2023 continuity plan projected 17,007 furloughs and just 1,300 excepted employees.

The smaller furlough number this year likely reflects newly expanded exemptions for Artemis, which now cover the entire program, rather than only operations necessary for "safety and protection of life and property."

The added stipulation reflects NASA's push to launch its Artemis 2 mission on time, currently scheduled for no earlier than Feb. 5, 2026.

Artemis 2 will fly a crew of four around the moon for the first time since NASA's Apollo missions, and sets the stage for Artemis 3, which aims to land astronauts on the lunar surface.

NASA's efforts to return to the moon are being challenged by a similar push by China — a race which, if lost by the U.S., would lead to geopolitical turmoil back on Earth, according to lawmakers. A

ny significant delay to Artemis 2 would likely create ripple effects for its follow-on mission, further stressing a strained timeline that experts warn may already be in jeopardy of falling short of its goals.

The new shutdown guidance confirms predictions made by NASA’s Exploration Systems acting Deputy Administrator Lakiesha Hawkins during a press conference on Sept. 23, who said, "we anticipate being able to request, and being able to continue to move forward on Artemis 2 in the event of a shutdown."

Sol 4669: Right Navigation Camera, Cylindrical Projection

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity took 19 images in Gale Crater using its mast-mounted Right Navigation Camera (Navcam) to create this mosaic.

The seam-corrected mosaic provides a 360-degree cylindrical projection panorama of the Martian surface centered at 58 degrees azimuth (measured clockwise from north).

Curiosity took the images on September 24, 2025, Sol 4669 of the Mars Science Laboratory mission at drive 198, site number 119.

The local mean solar time for the image exposures was 12 PM. Each Navcam image has a 45 degree field of view.

What’s Up for October? A Supermoon takes over, the Draconid meteor shower peeks through, and the Orionid meteors sparkle across the night sky.

The evening of October 6, look up and be amazed as the full moon is bigger and brighter because - it's a supermoon!

This evening, the moon could appear to be about 30% brighter and up to 14% larger than a typical full moon. But why?

Supermoons happen when a new moon or a full moon coincides with "perigee," which is when the moon is at its closest to Earth all month.

So this is an exceptionally close full moon! Which explains its spectacular appearance.

And what timing - while the supermoon appears on October 6th, just a couple of days before on October 4th is "International Observe the Moon Night"!

It's an annual, worldwide event when Moon enthusiasts come together to enjoy our natural satellite.You can attend or host a moon-viewing party, or simply observe the Moon from wherever you are.

So look up, and celebrate the moon along with people all around the world!

The supermoon will light up the sky on October 6th, but if you luck into some dark sky between October 6th and 10th, you might witness the first of two October meteor showers - the Draconids!

The Draconid meteor shower comes from debris trailing the comet 21P Giacobini-Zinner burning up in Earth's atmosphere

These meteors originate from nearby the head of the constellation Draco the dragon in the northern sky and the shower can produce up to 10 meteors per hour!

The Draconids peak around October 8th, but if you don't see any, you can always blame the bright supermoon and wait a few weeks until the next meteor shower - the Orionids!

The Orionid meteor shower, peaking October 21, is set to put on a spectacular show, shooting about 20 meteors per hour across the night sky.

This meteor shower happens when Earth travels through the debris trailing behind Halley's Comet and it burns up in our atmosphere.

The full duration of the meteor shower stretches from September 26 to November 22, but your best bet to see meteors is on October 21 before midnight until around 2 am.

This is because, not only is this night the shower's peak, it is also the October new moon, meaning the moon will be between the Earth and the Sun, making it dark and invisible to us.

With a moonless sky, you're much more likely to catch a fireball careening through the night.

So find a dark location after the sun has set, look to the southeast sky (if you're in the northern hemisphere) and the northeast (if you're in the southern hemisphere) and enjoy!

Orionid meteors appear to come from the direction of the Orion constellation but you might catch them all across the sky.

NASA signs US-Australia Agreement on Aeronautics, Space Cooperation

At the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) taking place in Sydney this week, representatives from the United States and Australia gathered to sign a framework agreement that strengthens collaboration in aeronautics and space exploration between the two nations.

Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy and Australian Space Agency Head Enrico Palermo signed the agreement Tuesday on behalf of their countries, respectively.

“Australia is an important and longtime space partner, from Apollo to Artemis, and this agreement depends on that partnership,” said Duffy.

“International agreements like this one work to leverage our resources and increase our capacities and scientific returns for all, proving critical to NASA’s plans from low Earth orbit to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.”

Australian Minister for Industry and Innovation and Minister for Science Tim Ayres said the signing builds on more than half a century of collaboration between the two nations.

“Strengthening Australia’s partnership with the U.S. and NASA creates new opportunities for Australian ideas and technologies, improving Australia’s industrial capability, boosting productivity, and building economic resilience,” Ayres said.

Known as the “Framework Agreement between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of Australia on Cooperation in Aeronautics and the Exploration and Use of Airspace and Outer Space for Peaceful Purposes,” it recognizes cooperation that’s mutually beneficial for the U.S. and Australia and establishes the legal framework under which the countries will work together.

Potential areas for cooperation include space exploration, space science, Earth science including geodesy, space medicine and life sciences, aeronautics research, and technology.

NASA has collaborated with Australia on civil space activities since 1960, when the two countries signed their first cooperative space agreement.

The Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex played a vital role in supporting NASA’s Apollo Program, most notably during the Apollo 13 mission.

Today, the complex is one of three global stations in NASA’s Deep Space Network, supporting both robotic and human spaceflight missions.

One of the original signatories to the Artemis Accords, Australia joined the United States under President Donald Trump and six other nations in October 2020, in supporting a basic set of principles for the safe and responsible use of space.

Global space leaders from many of the 56 signatory countries met at IAC in Sydney this week to further their implementation.

As part of an existing partnership with the Australian Space Agency, Australia is developing a semi-autonomous lunar rover, which will carry a NASA analysis instrument intended to demonstrate technology for scientific and exploration purposes.

The rover is scheduled to launch by the end of this decade through NASA’s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative.

NASA’s international partnerships reflect the agency’s commitment to peaceful, collaborative space exploration.

Building on a legacy of cooperation, from the space shuttle to the International Space Station and now Artemis, international partnerships support NASA’s plans for lunar exploration under the Artemis campaign and future human exploration of Mars.

NASA, International Partners Deepen Commitment to Artemis Accords

NASA, along with leaders from global space agencies and government representatives worldwide, convened on Monday to further the implementation of the Artemis Accords — practical principles designed to guide the responsible exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

The meeting was held during the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) taking place in Sydney. In opening remarks, acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy highlighted the five-year anniversary of the Artemis Accords next month.

“When President Trump launched the Artemis Accords in his first term, he made sure American values would lead the way – bringing together a coalition of nations to set the rules of the road in space and ensure exploration remains peaceful.

After five years, the coalition is stronger than ever. This is critical as we seek to beat China to the Moon, not just to leave footprints, but this time to stay,” said Duffy.

The United States, led by NASA and the U.S. Department of State, signed the accords on Oct. 13, 2020, with seven other founding nations.

The accords were created in response to the growing global interest in lunar activities by governments and private companies. They now comprise 56 country signatories — nearly 30% of the world’s countries.

The event was co-chaired by NASA, the Australian Space Agency, and the UAE Space Agency. Dozens of nations were represented, creating the foundation for future space exploration for the Golden Age of exploration and innovation.

“Australia is a proud founding signatory of the Artemis Accords and is focused on supporting new signatories in the Indo-Pacific region,” said Head of Australian Space Agency Enrico Palermo.

“The purpose of the accords is as important — if not more important — as it was when first established.

This annual gathering of principals at IAC 2025 is a key opportunity to reaffirm our collective commitment to exploring the Moon, Mars and beyond in a peaceful, safe, and sustainable way.”

During the meeting, leaders discussed recommendations for non-interference in each other’s space activities including transparency on expected launch dates, general nature of activities, and landing locations.

They also discussed orbital debris mitigation and disposal management, interoperability of systems for safer and more efficient operations, and the release of scientific data.

In May 2025, the United Arab Emirates hosted an Artemis Accords workshop focused on topics, such as non-interference and space object registration and reporting beyond Earth orbit.

“Through our active participation in the Artemis Accords and by organizing specialised workshops, we aim to reinforce the principles of transparency, sustainability, and innovation in space activities.

We are committed to strengthening international partnerships and facilitating the exchange of expertise, thereby contributing to the development of a robust global framework for safe and responsible space exploration, while opening new frontiers for scientific research,” said UAE Minister of Sports and Chairman of UAE Space Agency Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi.

“This reflects the UAE’s unwavering commitment to enhancing international cooperation in space exploration and promoting the peaceful use of space.”

More countries are expected to sign the Artemis Accords in the months and years ahead, as NASA continues its work to establish a safe, peaceful, and prosperous future in space.

Des Moines School Board accepts Roberts’ resignation as superintendent after ICE arrest 1/2

Students at Central Academy in downtown Des Moines participate in a planned, district-wide walkout in support of Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Ian Roberts Tuesday.

Students at Hoover High School in Des Moines walked out of class at 11 a.m. Tuesday to protest the arrest of the district's superintendent by ICE agents.

The crowd stretched for blocks down the street and cars honked as the students walked and chanted things like, “We want justice, not just ice,” and the state motto, “Our liberties we prize, our rights we will maintain.”

Some addressed their peers and spoke out against what they see as ICE violating due process, regardless of citizenship.A student with immigrant parents said they’re terrified their family could be detained at any moment. (Good if they are here illegally they should be afraid)

More than 100 students at Hoover High School joined the walk-out Tuesday morning. Teachers and school administrators monitored traffic in front of the school as the student protesters walked up and down the block chanting anti-ICE slogans.

Several students in the crowd said they haven’t seen a protest this big since they started attending school. For many, it was their first protest. is a developing story and will be updated.

The Des Moines School Board accepted Superintendent Ian Roberts’ resignation in a special session Tuesday night. The unanimous decision comes less than a week after Roberts was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and hours after his attorney presented Roberts' resignation letter.

The board voted Monday to place Roberts on unpaid administrative leave, following the State Board of Educational Examiners revoking his educational license on Sunday.

Attorney for Roberts presents resignation letter and more details

Alfredo Parrish, the lead attorney representing Roberts, provided a resignation letter he wrote to the Des Moines School Board. It reads:

“Dr. Roberts has authorized me to send this letter announcing his immediate resignation from his position as superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools. Out of concern for his 30,000 students, Dr. Roberts does not want to distract the board, educators and staff from focusing on educating DMPS’s students.”

Parrish also said he will file a motion to reopen Roberts’ immigration case,in addition to a motion filed Monday to stay Roberts’ deportation. He suggested his arguments will include that Roberts thought his immigration case had been resolved earlier this year, and that Roberts is an asset to the community.

“We want you to know that Dr. Roberts’ greatest concern is about his students who he actually loved, and the students who love him back and his staff,” Parrish said.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested Roberts to enforce a final removal order from May 2024. Roberts is anative of Guyana, but on an I-9 employment eligibility form he indicated that he was a U.S. citizen, according to DMPS. The school district said Roberts provided a driver’s license and Social Security card as documentation.

DMPS said Monday it received a copy of Roberts' removal order from the Department of Justice, as well as notification from the Department of Homeland Securitythat Roberts does not have work authorization.

When asked ifRoberts was authorized to work in the U.S. when he started working for DMPS in 2023, Parrish said he is still “digging through” those questions and does not yet have access to Roberts’ full immigration case file.

But Parrish provided a letter he said was from Roberts’ priorTexas-based immigration attorney telling Roberts “his case had been closed successfully, and he was under the impression that it had been.”

The letter from Jackeline Gonzalez to Ian Andre Roberts dated March 27, 2025, states:

“I am writing to inform you of the closure of your immigration case. It has been my pleasure to represent you throughout this process,and I am pleased to report that your case has reached a successful resolution.”

IPR News left a message seeking comment with Gonzalez’s office Tuesday afternoon.

Parrish said he is also “trying to get to the bottom of” whetherRoberts participated in immigration proceedings surrounding his 2024 deportation orderand how Roberts was notified of that order.He would not say if Roberts has ever applied for a Green Card or citizenship.

Parrish said Roberts was born in Guyana in December 1970, but would not say when and how Roberts first came to the U.S. from Guyana. Parrish saidhe did not want to respond to questions about reports that Roberts identified himself as a U.S. citizenon hiring forms. Roberts provided a driver’s license and a Social Security card to verify his employment eligibility, according to DMPS.

“Certain people coming into this country are entitled to get a Social Security number,” Parrish said. “We thoroughly checked that out. That’s not our concern at the moment.”

ICE said agents found a loaded gun in Roberts’ DMPS-owned vehicle when he was arrested. Parrish did not directly address ICE’s allegation, but he saidRoberts was in the military in Guyana, where he led raids “on the biggest criminals in Guyana.” (Roberts is another Ilhan story, her father killed many and then they escaped the country.and they made up all kinds of stories how their family was persecuted when her father killed many innocent)

“And doing that type of work, he was a target on some occasions to be taken out by the cartel,” he said. “And so we don’t know where that goes, but I think perhaps the government knows that.”

Parrish also did not want to provide detailsabout a raid on Friday night of Roberts’ home by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. He said he’s seeking moreinformation about ICE’s allegation of a previous weapons charge from February 2020.

Overall, Parrish said this is a complex case and people should be patient as his team takes things one step at a time. He said Roberts has been a “tremendous asset” and aninspiration to the community as the first Black superintendentof the Des Moines school district.

“It’s the first time we’ve had someone, in my opinion, as qualified to reach out to the students as Dr. Roberts,” Parrish said. “The thing that has amazed me, quite frankly, are the calls from other jurisdictions who said this man changed the way we looked at education, and so we’re going to work our hearts out for him.”

Roberts' education background and credentials

Questions about Roberts’ immigration history have raised concerns about his background and credentials.

Roberts has an extensive educational history, according to professional bios and his LinkedIn profile, including attending seven universities. The years spent at each university are included on his LinkedIn profile,although the degrees are not listed.

IPR News contacted the seven universitiesthat Roberts listed publicly as attending. Three of those universities responded as of Tuesday afternoon.

A staff member for Morgan State confirmed that Roberts attended from fall 2002 to spring 2007. Roberts was pursuing a doctorate inurban educational leadership. However,the university confirmed that Roberts did not receive a degree or a certificate from Morgan State.

Roberts is frequently called “Dr. Roberts” by DMPS staff members and other members of the community. At the news conference Tuesday, his lawyer saidRoberts received a doctorate from Trident University International. Trident University has not responded to emails from IPR News.

Coppin State University in West Baltimore, Md., sent IPR News a statement saying that Roberts graduated in 1998 and was “a standout scholar and athlete during his undergraduate studies.”The university did not specify what degree Roberts earned.

Brian T. Browne, spokesman for St. John's University in New York, said that Roberts received a master’s degree from St. John’s on June 4, 2000.Browne confirmed that Roberts did not receive a doctorate from St. John’s. The master’s degree was a “master of science education/general and special education (grades 7-12).”

Students leave classes in protest

Students walked out of Des Moines high schools throughout the day Tuesday to protest Roberts' detention by ICE officers Friday.

The walkouts started with Des Moines high school students from Central Campus marching up to Terrace Hill, the governor’s mansion.

The DOT in a statement, said it had issued “an interim final rule (IFR) barring race- and sex-based contracting requirements from federal grants,” and that it had sent “letters to New York to inform them that their two mega projects – the 2nd Avenue Subway and Hudson Tunnel – are under administrative review to determine whether any unconstitutional practices are occurring.”

“The Department is focusing on these projects because they are arguably the largest infrastructure initiatives in the Western Hemisphere, and the American people want to see them completed quickly and efficiently,” the DOT said.

“Until USDOT’s quick administrative review is complete, project reimbursements cannot be processed, including a $300 million disbursement for the 2nd Avenue Subway. The remaining federal funding for these projects totals nearly $18 billion.

Vought’s announcement came on the first day of the shutdown of the U.S. government after Congress failed to pass stopgap funding bills that would have kept federal agencies and services operating at normal capacity for at least another seven weeks.

The funding freeze is not a result of the shutdown,but the DOT said that its review of the projects will take longer than normal because of the shutdown.

“Thanks to the Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jefferies shutdown, however, USDOT’s review of New York’s unconstitutional practices will take more time,” the DOT said, referring to the Senate’s minority leader and and House minority leader, who are both Democrats from New York City.

“Without a budget, the Department has been forced to furlough the civil rights staff responsible for conducting this review.

“This is another unfortunate casualty of radical Democrats’ reckless decision to hold the federal government hostage to give illegal immigrants benefits,” the DOT said.

Researchers have discovered a young protoplanet called WISPIT 2b embedded in a ring-shaped gap in a disk encircling a young star.

While theorists have thought that planets likely exist in these gaps (and possibly even create them), this is the first time that it has actually been observed.

Researchers have directly detected – essentially photographed – a new planet called WISPIT 2b, labeled a protoplanet because it is an astronomical object that is accumulating material and growing into a fully-realized planet.

However, even in its "proto" state, WISPIT 2b is a gas giant about 5 times as massive as Jupiter. This massive protoplanet is just about 5 million years old, or almost 1,000 times younger than the Earth, and about 437 light-years from Earth.

Being a giant and still-growing baby planet, WISPIT 2b is interesting to study on its own, but its location in this protoplanetary disk gap is even more fascinating.

Protoplanetary disks are made of gas and dust that surround young stars and function as the birthplace for new planets. Within these disks, gaps or clearings in the dust and gas can form, appearing as empty rings.

Scientists have long suggested that these growing planets are likely responsible for clearing the material in these gaps, pushing and scattering dusty disk material outwards and greeting the ring gaps in the first place.

Our own solar system was once just a protoplanetary disk, and it's possible that Jupiter and Saturn may have cleared ring gaps like this in that disk many, many years ago.

But despite continued observation of stars with these kinds of disks, there was never any direct evidence of a growing planet found in one of these ring gaps.

That is, until now. As reported in this paper, WISPIT 2b was directly observed in one of the ring gaps around its star, WISPIT 2.

Another interesting aspect of this discovery is that WISPIT 2b appears to have formed where it was found, it didn't form elsewhere and move into the gap somehow.

Details:

The star WISPIT 2 was first observed using VLT-SPHERE (Very Large Telescope - Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch), a ground-based telescope in northern Chile operated by the European Southern Observatory.

In these observations, the rings and gap around this star were first seen.

Following these observations of the system, researchers looked at WISPIT 2, and spotted the planet WISPIT 2b for the first time, using the University of Arizona's MagAO-X extreme adaptive optics system, a high-contrast exoplanet imager at the Magellan 2 (Clay) Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile.

This technology adds another unique layer to this discovery. The MagAO-X instrument captures direct images, so it didn't just detect WISPIT 2b, it essentially captured a photograph of the protoplanet.

The team used this technology to study the WISPIT 2 system in what is called H-alpha, or Hydrogen-alpha, light. This is a type of visible light that is emitted when hydrogen gas falls from a protoplanetary disk onto young, growing planets.

This could look like a ring of super heated plasma circling the planet. This plasma emits the H-alpha light that MagAO-X is specially designed to detect (even if it is a very faint signal compared to the bright star nearby).

When looking at the system in H-alpha light, the team spotted a clear dot in one of the dark ring gaps in the disk around WISPIT 2. This dot? The planet WISPIT 2b.

In addition to observing the protoplanet's H-alpha emission using MagAO-X, the team also studied the protoplanet in other wavelengths of infrared light using the LMIRcam detector as part of the The Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer instrument on the University of Arizona's Large Binocular Telescope.

Fun Facts:

In addition to discovering WISPIT 2b, this team spotted a second dot in one of the other dark ring gaps even closer to the star WISPIT 2.

This second dot has been identified as another candidate planet that will likely be investigated in future studies of the system.

October’s Night Sky Notes: Let’s Go, LIGO!

September 2025 marks ten years since the first direct detection of gravitational waves as predicted by Albert Einstein’s 1916 theory of General Relativity.

These invisible ripples in space were first directly detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO).

Traveling at the speed of light (~186,000 miles per second), these waves stretch and squeeze the fabric of space itself, changing the distance between objects as they pass.

Waves In Space

Gravitational waves are created when massive objects accelerate in space, especially in violent events. LIGO detected the first gravitational waves when two black holes, orbiting one another, finally merged, creating ripples in space-time.

But these waves are not exclusive to black holes. If a star were to go supernova, it could produce the same effect. Neutron stars can also create these waves for various reasons.

While these waves are invisible to the human eye, this animation from NASA’s Science Visualization Studio shows the merger of two black holes and the waves they create in the process.

How It Works

A gravitational wave observatory, like LIGO, is built with two tunnels, each approximately 2.5 miles long, arranged in an "L" shape.

At the end of each tunnel, a highly polished 40 kg mirror (about 16 inches across) is mounted; this will reflect the laser beam that is sent from the observatory.

A laser beam is sent from the observatory room and split into two, with equal parts traveling down each tunnel, bouncing off the mirrors at the end.

When the beams return, they are recombined. If the arm lengths are perfectly equal, the light waves cancel out in just the right way, producing darkness at the detector.

But if a gravitational wave passes, it slightly stretches one arm while squeezing the other, so the returning beams no longer cancel perfectly, creating a flicker of light that reveals the wave’s presence.

The actual detection happens at the point of recombination, when even a minuscule stretching of one arm and squeezing of the other changes how long it takes the laser beams to return. This difference produces a measurable shift in the interference pattern.

To be certain that the signal is real and not local noise, both LIGO observatories — one in Washington State (LIGO Hanford) and the other in Louisiana (LIGO Livingston) — must record the same pattern within milliseconds.

When they do, it’s confirmation of a gravitational wave rippling through Earth. We don’t feel these waves as they pass through our planet, but we now have a method of detecting them!

Get Involved

With the help of two additional gravitational-wave observatories, VIRGO and KAGRA, there have been 300 black hole mergers detected in the past decade; some of which are confirmed, while others await further study.

While the average person may not have a laser interferometer lying around in the backyard, you can help with two projects geared toward detecting gravitational waves and the black holes that contribute to them:

Black Hole Hunters: Using data from the TESS satellite, you would study graphs of how the brightness of stars changes over time, looking for an effect called gravitational microlensing. This lensing effect can indicate that a massive object has passed in front of a star, such as a black hole.

Gravity Spy: You can help LIGO scientists with their gravitational wave research by looking for glitches that may mimic gravitational waves. By sorting out the mimics, we can train algorithms on how to detect the real thing.

You can also use gelatin, magnetic marbles, and a small mirror for a more hands-on demonstration on how gravitational waves move through space-time with JPL’s Dropping In With Gravitational Waves activity!

Crew Works Advanced Science Hardware and Conducts Lab Inspections

Space science hardware once again topped the schedule for the Expedition 73 crew aboard the International Space Station on Tuesday.

Life support and electronics maintenance to keep the orbital outpost in tip-top shape filled the rest of the day for the space lab residents.

Spacecraft humidity removal gear and ultra-high temperature physics were the focus for Flight Engineers Jonny Kim of NASA and Kimiya Yui of JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency).

Kim installed and activated a new technology demonstration in the Harmony module testing the removal of moisture from a spacecraft’s environment for recycling.

Results may advance regenerative life support systems on future missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond such due to the inability to resupply crews living and working farther away from Earth.

Yui worked in the Kibo laboratory module on the Electrostatic Levitation Furnace (ELF) processing samples inside the experimental device.

ELF uses lasers to safely heat materials to ultra-high temperatures as sensors and cameras measure thermophysical properties difficult to obtain in Earth’s gravity.

NASA Flight Engineer Mike Fincke installed the new Heat Transfer Host 2 fluid physics research hardware inside the Columbus laboratory module.

The advanced gear will look at two-phase heat transfer, or condensation when gas turns to liquid, potentially leading to the design of advanced thermal systems for spacecraft carrying humans on deep space missions.

NASA Flight Engineer Zena Cardman spent her day primarily on life support maintenance first transferring fluids inside the Destiny laboratory module.

Afterward, she collected airflow measurements and inspected ventilation systems throughout the space station’s U.S. segment with assistance from Kim.

Finally, Cardman inspected cables and insulation for signs of corrosion and degradation in the Unity and Harmony modules.

At the beginning of her shift, Cardman spent a few minutes swapping samples cassettes inside the Advanced Sample Experiment Processor-4 for an experiment investigating how to manufacture pharmaceuticals off the Earth.

Station Commander Sergey Ryzhikov of Roscosmos spent most of his shift replacing power supply components inside the Zarya module. He wrapped up his day jogging on the Zvezda service module’s treadmill for a regularly scheduled space fitness test.

Flight Engineer Alexey Zubritsky concentrated on maintenance throughout Tuesday servicing the Elektron oxygen generator in Zvezda and conducting the yearly inspection inside the Roscosmos segment’s modules for moisture, corrosion, or damage.

Flight Engineer Oleg Platonov explored how blood circulates to the microcirculatory system, the smallest blood vessels, in a crew member’s limbs using specialized blood pressure cuffs and electrodes.

Nearly half of all immigrants in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Twin Cities were found to have committed some form of immigration fraud during a recent sweep by immigration authorities, officials revealed Tuesday.

“Officers encountered blatant marriage fraud, visa overstay, people claiming to work as businesses that can’t be found, forged documents, abuse of the H1B visa system, abuse of the F1 visa, and many other discrepancies,” US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) director Joseph B. Edlow told reporters Tuesday.

Officials didn’t point to a specific group,but the Twin Cities has seen a massive uptick in Somali refugees and immigrants in recent years— with more than 82,000 from the East African country living in Minnesota.

USCIS visited 1,000 homes across Minneapolis and St. Paul in the last two weeks and found “nearly50%” of inhabitants were engaged in some form of immigration fraud.

“Our officersfound indications of fraud, non-compliance or public safety and national security concerns,” Edlow said. “What they found should shock all of America.”

The operation –dubbed Twin Shield, and carried out with the help of ICE – began on Sept. 13 and concluded this week, with Edlow calling it a “success” that could soon be repeated in cities across the country.

“This is the first of many,” Edlow said.“Any city should be prepared to be the site for an operation of this magnitude.”(LA and NY next)

It remains unclear how many people were detained in the operation — officials would only disclose that “multiple” had been taken into custody, explaining that it was too early to give an accurate number.

The Twin Cities were chosenbecause the “data” showed it as a hotspot for “manipulation and misuse of the immigration system,” officials said, with cases ofmarriage fraudfound to be a particular problem.

In one incident, investigators encountered aKenyan immigrant who paid just $100 for a fake death certificatein his wife’s name so he could marry his way into the US.The trouble is, his wife was alive and well, and found with their five kids in Minneapolis.

“Incidentally, he has another wife living in Swedenwith whom has an additional three children,” Edlow said.

Another migrant found living in the Twin Citieswas the son of a “known or suspected terrorist on the no-fly list,” and had made numerous attempts to commit marriage fraud before being caught in the operation, according to officials. He is now in custody for deportation.

A third personconned an elderly American woman into marriage– and while the bogus couple have since divorced, officials said she “lives in fear” of retaliation from the conman.

“I want the American people to know that we are declaring war on immigration fraud,” Edlow said. “We have a responsibility to keep this system legitimate.”

“What has been uncovered by these diligent officers over the past two weeks, that’s only the tip of the iceberg.”

Minnesota has sizable immigrant populations from countries like India, Vietnam, and Mexico,but its Somali residents have been a flashpoint for years.

While most are law-abiding asylum seekers – former Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek previously told Fox News “95%” are “good people” who want “to raise their families” –a minority have caused an outsized negative impact with rampant crime and gang activity.

Credit card fraud and burglaries have been chief among those crimes – while in some extreme casesrecruitment to overseas terror organizations like ISIS have been encountered.

Since their initial release in 2021, the data products from NASA’s Harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 (HLS) project have become an indispensable resource for informing scientific discovery, facilitating environmental monitoring, and monitoring global sustainability.

Now, Microsoft has made it easier for researchers, developers, and decision-makers to access and benefit from the HLS project’s efforts.

Through a collaboration with NASA, HLS data is now available on Microsoft Azure—Microsoft’s cloud platform—and accessible through Microsoft’s Planetary Computer.

Planetary Computer provides access to a multi-petabyte catalog of global environmental data presented in consistent, analysis-ready formats.

Users can access a variety of data through application programming interfaces (APIs) and directly via Azure storage. This flexible scientific environment allows users to analyze the data as well as build applications to use on top of the platform.

Enhancing Land Monitoring Capabilities with High-Resolution Imagery

HLS provides a seamless set of surface reflectance records from the Operational Land Imager (OLI) aboard the NASA/USGS Landsat-8/9 and Multi-Spectral Instrument (MSI) aboard the European Space Agency's Sentinel-2A/B remote sensing satellites.

By harmonizing these datasets, NASA provides a continuous, high-resolution view of our planet, which allows for better analysis of land use changes, vegetation health, water resources, and more.

The HLS project was created in response to the needs of the U.S. Federal Government identified by the Satellite Needs Working Group (SNWG) biennial survey.

In that assessment, federal agencies and end users identified a need for more frequent Landsat-like observations to track short-term changes in vegetation and other land components to support agricultural monitoring and land cover classification at moderate to high resolution in both the visible and thermal components of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The project's data products, which are distributed by NASA's Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC), greatly improve current publicly available remote sensing land monitoring capabilities, particularly in terms of the frequency of land surface observations through time.

The harmonization of HLS ensures that the Landsat 8 and Landsat 9 collection (30-meter spatial resolution with a 16-day repeat period) and the Sentinel-2A/B collection (10 to 20-meter spatial resolution with a five-day repeat period) can be used as if they were a single collection.

Through HLS, land surface observations can be acquired at an unprecedented 30-meter spatial resolution every two to three days.

These frequent revisit times allow for time series imagery of land surface applications at the field/plot scale, which supports a wide range of applications including agricultural health, insect infestations, and natural hazard impacts.

President Donald Trump told reporters on Tuesday in the Oval Office that the White House had “reached a deal” with Harvard, before cautioning that the agreement had not been finalized.

“All you have to do is paper it, right” Trump asked Education Secretary Linda E. McMahon, who concurred. “It’ll be great.”

When a reporter asked for more information on the details of the deal, Trump seemed to back up, saying an agreement was not yet finalized.

“We’re in the process of getting very close, Linda’s finishing up the final details, and they’d be paying about $500 million,” Trump said.

“And they’ll be operating trade schools, and they’ll be teaching people how to do AI and lots of other things. Engines, lots of things,” he added.

A Harvard spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The unexpected announcement comes after talks between the White House and Harvard stalled in recent weeks, following a judge’s ruling against the Trump administration’s block on $2.7 billion in federal grants and contracts to the University.Harvard was still facing a slew of federal investigations, and the administration has continued to levy new threats against the University’saccess to federal funding since the judge’s order.

Trump said reaching a deal would mean that Harvard’s “sins are forgiven.”

Under the agreement, he said, a series of trade schools would be “run by Harvard.”

“They’ve put up $500 million interest and everything else would go to that account — meaning it would go to the trade school,” he said.“It’s a big investment in trade school done by very smart people.”

The agreement described by Trump loosely mirrors the administration’s earlier settlement withBrown University, where the school agreed to pay $50 million to support workforce developmentin Rhode Island. Under that agreement, Brown did not pledge to directly “run” trade schools.

At the time of his remarks, Trump was signing an unrelated executive order aimed at advancing pediatric cancer research and tapping into “the extraordinary potential” of artificial intelligence.

He pivoted to Harvard when introducing remarks by McMahon and then again after a reporter asked him about the status of the settlement talks, which were first announced by Trump himself in June.

Trump’s remarks come as the Trump administration has turned up the pressure on Harvard. On Monday,the White House launched federal suspension and debarment proceedings against the University, a highly unusual move that would cut off the school from access to federal grants and contracts.

As recently as Sunday, Harvard’s top leaders had offered little clarity on whether a settlement existed — or, if it did, on its status or terms.

When asked by a Crimson reporter while leaving a meeting of the University’s governing bodies, Harvard Corporation chair Penny Pritzker responded that she had “absolutely no idea” how the negotiations might conclude.

Pritzker also expressed skepticism about Harvard’s willingness to agree to a settlement involving a $500 million payout.

“I’ve heard the Trump administration say that,” she remarked when pressed about the figure.

Meanwhile, Harvard Provost John F. Manning ’82 declined to answer questions regarding the talks when approached, offering only a tight smile.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that the White House has been on the verge of a deal with Harvard.

When he first broke the news that talks had resumed between the two parties in June, he claimed that a deal was coming “in the next week or so.” More than three months passed without signs of a finished deal.

NASA, Blue Origin Invite Media to Attend Mars Mission Launch

NASA and Blue Origin are reopening media accreditation for the launch of the agency’s ESCAPADE (Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers) mission.

The twin ESCAPADE spacecraft will study the solar wind’s interaction with Mars, providing insight into the planet’s real-time response to space weather and how solar activity drives atmospheric escape.

This will be the second launch of Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket.

Media interested in covering ESCAPADE launch activities must apply for media credentials. Media who previously applied for media credentials for the ESCAPADE launch do not need to reapply.

The full impact of the federal government shutdown is unclear, but at least there's good news for tourists going to KSC. The Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Visitor Complex remains open despite the federal government shutdown.

“Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is operated for NASA by Delaware North and is not supported by government or taxpayer funding and therefore we are able to remain open,” the KSC Visitor Complex said on X Wednesday morning to assure tourists not to cancel their upcoming plans.

All of the KSC Complex’s exhibits and attractions are still open, the organization confirmed.

The federal government shut down at midnight Wednesday after gridlock between Republicans and Democrats over health care funding. Health care subsidies from the Affordable Care Act are going to be ending soon for millions of people, which will make insurance premiums rise nationally.

With the federal government shut down, about 750,000 federal employees are expected to be furloughed. Some could permanently lose their job, as President Donald Trump’s administration is considering firing them, The Associated Press reported.

Trump threatened to target Democrats’ priorities and warned about “cutting vast numbers of people out, cutting things that they like, cutting programs that they like,” according to the AP.

The full impact of the federal government shutdown is unclear.

At least for people heading to see the Saturn V rocket or the retired Atlantis, their trips won’t be spoiled. Kennedy Space Center has become a must-see tourism destination during the revival of regular rocket launches on the coast.

SpaceX and Blue Origin and other private companies are taking off in the skies, drawing visitors to witness rocket launches.

KSC is on track for at least 100 launches this year. But the most anticipated launch is scheduled for 2026, as Americans look to return to the moon in Artemis II.

KSC Visitor Complex recently added a new stop onto its popular bus tour and regularly holds special ticketed events, like the upcoming Taste of Space.

Advancing Europe’s quantum secure communications from space

The European Space Agency (ESA) has signed a €50 million contract with aerospace company Thales Alenia Space to begin the preliminary design phase of the Security And cryptoGrAphic (SAGA) mission.

This agreement enables SAGA to continue to its preliminary design review, marking a relevant step towards establishing secure, space-based communications using quantum technologies.

SAGA, developed by ESA, aims to demonstrate quantum key distribution (QKD) via satellites, complementing ground quantum encryption networks currently under development across European Union Member States.

Using quantum mechanical principles, it is possible to produce cryptographic keys that shut down when there is any attempt at observation or tampering.

By enabling secure transmission of encryption keys over long distances, SAGA will contribute to the resilience of Europe’s digital infrastructure and support the protection of sensitive government and institutional data.

The mission is part of the broader European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI), a joint initiative between ESA and the European Commission.

EuroQCI works towards creating a pan-European network that links ground-based and space-based quantum systems, boosting cybersecurity across industries ranging from energy and healthcare to defence and emergency response. It will become one of the pillars of Europe’s cybersecurity strategy.

The contract with Thales Alenia Space, signed during the Quantum Europe Forum in Brussels on 1 October, will support the development of technologies, system prototypes, and a demonstration of the critical technologies involved for the satellite’s success.

The preliminary design review is expected within two years, after which ESA will continue with the manufacturing phase.

The contract was signed by Antonio Sturiale, Director of Domain Telecommunication Italy at Thales Alenia Space, and Laurent Jaffart, Director of Connectivity and Secure Communications at ESA, in the presence of Aymard de Touzalin, Head of Unit, Emerging & Disruptive Technologies at DG CNECT, European Commission.

Unlike other ESA-led quantum missions such as EAGLE-1 and QKDSat, which focus on commercial quantum communication, SAGA is tailored to support classified and critical data flows.

This includes communications essential to governments related to national and public safety.

Laurent Jaffart said: “With SAGA, our aim is to ambitiously advance satellite communications, furthering Europe’s digital sovereignty, cybersecurity and industrial competitiveness in the quantum era.

We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with Thales Alenia Space, which puts our Member States at the forefront of the race for truly secure connectivity.”

European Space Agency and Korea AeroSpace Administration embark on new cooperation

The European Space Agency and the Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) have announced they will work together on peaceful uses of space, starting with space weather monitoring and sharing space communications facilities.

A Memorandum of Understanding for enhanced cooperation was signed at the 76th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Sydney, Australia, and is supported by formal announcements of cooperation on network and operations, as well as an intention to work together on space weather.

KASA was formed in 2024 to manage South Korea’s space development, and discussions on partnership with ESA began at IAC in Milan just under a year ago.

Under an implementing arrangement, the agencies may use each other’s ground stations for telemetry, tracking and command functions.

It complements a similar arrangement in place since 2011 with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), which is an affiliated research institute of KASA.

ESA’s European Space Tracking (Estrack) network has a core of six stations in six countries, including three deep space antennas, while the agreement will open access to the Korea Deep Space Antenna in Yeoju.

This cooperation will boost resilience for missions by filling gaps in coverage and providing back-up tracking stations should the main facility not be available because of environmental reasons or congestion.

In addition, ESA and KASA signed a Joint Statement of Intent to express interest in cooperation in space weather monitoring and capability development.

The agencies could potentially combine data from ESA's upcoming Vigil mission to Lagrange point L5 and a planned KASA solar probe mission to L4.

Cooperation between the missions would deepen research on solar activity and space weather forecasting, supporting the goal of a comprehensive space weather service in the 2030s.

Speaking at the signing in Sydney, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher said:

“This is an important moment for Europe and South Korea, opening up great opportunities for our space interests, and strengthening existing systems through cooperation.

In ESA, we are excited to learn from our colleagues in KASA, and to share our experience to reach complementary goals."

KASA Administrator Yoon Young-bin said: "KASA’s objectives include enhancing global space cooperation. Today, we have taken an important step and we look forward to our shared journey in cooperation in space activities for peaceful purposes.”

Future areas of cooperation that are also covered by the Memorandum of Understanding include space science, space exploration, human spaceflight, space applications, space-based infrastructure, space industry and academic networking, space sustainability and space mission assurance.

Further areas of cooperation are also open for agreement under the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding.

Both agencies also have extensive interests in satellite navigation, as KASA will develop the Korea Positioning System to enhance regional navigation.

Collaboration between the two agencies on missions such as LEO-PNT is expected to improve satellite navigation accuracy and stability, as well as enhance the mutual reinforcement and reliability of satellite navigation signals.

The website features a glossary of extremism, labeling groups as extremist or hateful in nature. Scientists digging through data collected by the Cassini spacecraft have found new complex organic molecules spewing from Saturn’s moon Enceladus.

This is a clear sign that complex chemical reactions are taking place within its underground ocean. Some of these reactions could be part of chains that lead to even more complex, potentially biologically relevant molecules.

Published today in Nature Astronomy, this discovery further strengthens the case for a dedicated European Space Agency (ESA) mission to orbit and land on Enceladus.

In 2005, Cassini found the first evidence that Enceladus has a hidden ocean beneath its icy surface. Jets of water burst from cracks close to the moon’s south pole, shooting ice grains into space.

Smaller than grains of sand, some of the tiny pieces of ice fall back onto the moon’s surface, whilst others escape and form a ring around Saturn that traces Enceladus’s orbit.

Lead author Nozair Khawaja explains what we already knew: “Cassini was detecting samples from Enceladus all the time as it flew through Saturn’s E ring.

We had already found many organic molecules in these ice grains, including precursors for amino acids.

The ice grains in the ring can be hundreds of years old. As they have aged, they may have been ‘weathered’ and therefore altered by intense space radiation.

Scientists wanted to investigate fresh grains ejected much more recently to get a better idea of what exactly is going on in Enceladus’s ocean.

Fortunately, we already had the data. Back in 2008, Cassini flew straight through the icy spray.

Pristine grains ejected only minutes before hit the spacecraft’s Cosmic Dust Analyzer (CDA) instrument at about 18 km/s.

These were not only the freshest ice grains Cassini had ever detected, but also the fastest.

The speed mattered. Nozair explains why:

“The ice grains contain not just frozen water, but also other molecules, including organics. At lower impact speeds, the ice shatters, and the signal from clusters of water molecules can hide the signal from certain organic molecules.

But when the ice grains hit CDA fast, water molecules don’t cluster, and we have a chance to see these previously hidden signals.”

Blue Origin and Luxembourg Partner on Oasis-1 Mission to Map Lunar Resources

Blue Origin today announced Project Oasis, a multi-phase initiative to identify key lunar resources from orbit, assess them on the ground, and harness them in situ. Oasis-1, alongside Luxembourg partners, is the first mission in the Oasis campaign.

It will create the most detailed high-resolution maps to date of lunar water ice, Helium-3, radionuclides, rare earth elements, precious metals, and other materials crucial for humanity’s expansion into space for the benefit of Earth.

Harnessing the water ice found by Oasis-1 could provide hydrogen and oxygen for spacecraft propellant, positioning the Moon as an off-world refueling station for orbital destinations and deep space missions.

Additionally, lunar resources could support local lunar surface power, advanced in-space manufacturing, clean energy systems, and reduced reliance on terrestrial extraction on Earth.

"Once we know what's really there and how to access it, everything changes," said Pat Remias, vice president, Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering.

"Project Oasis creates the foundation for a thriving space economy that benefits everyone, including the billions of individuals on Earth who will benefit from space-based resources."

Project Oasis makes the construction of space infrastructure economically viable and strategically sustainable by integrating low-cost space transportation with in-situ resource utilization.

While Oasis-1 will carry out resource prospecting, it will be further enabled through Blue Alchemist, which will process regolith into useful products like oxygen, solar cells, and power cables.

Together, these efforts seek to transform the Moon into a resource and power hub, lowering costs and complexity for missions to Mars and beyond, making asteroid harnessing viable in the future, and enabling greater sustainability on Earth.

In partnership with Luxembourg and its national space agency, Project Oasis is being developed jointly by Blue Origin's Space Resources Center of Excellence (SRCE), the world's largest dedicated facility for space resources prospecting and utilization, and the company’s international office in Luxembourg.

GOMSpace and ESRIC in Luxembourg are also supporting the project.

Project Oasis addresses a fundamental challenge in space development: the prohibitive cost of transporting materials from Earth.

By producing propellant and construction materials from lunar resources, the program aims to reduce deep-space mission costs by up to 90% through in-space refueling, enable permanent lunar settlements with locally sourced building materials, establish strategic resource security for national space capabilities, and provide a platform for international collaboration to unlock the vast potential of space resources.

Project Oasis employs neutron spectroscopy to quantify subsurface water ice concentrations to one-meter depths, the most reliable method for resource assessments.

The ultra-low orbital altitude enables unprecedented spatial resolution impossible with traditional high-altitude orbiters.

Additional instruments include magnetometers for metal detection and multispectral imaging for Helium-3 and geological mapping, with controlled impact sequences maximizing data collection for precise extraction site selection.

JWST delivers 1st weather report of nearby world with no sun — stormy and covered with auroras

The latest weather forecast doesn't come from Dublin, London or New York — it comes from deep space, where a lonely world drifts without a sun and glows with auroras more dazzling than Earth's northern lights.

The world, called SIMP-0136, is about 200 million years old and lies about 20 light-years away in the constellation Pisces. It isn't quite a world nor a star.

Astronomers classify it as a brown dwarf, sometimes dubbed "failed stars." Like stars, this world forms from collapsing clouds of gas, but it never grows massive enough to sustain hydrogen fusion in its core — the defining trait of a star.

And unlike Earth, SIMP-0136 doesn't orbit its own sun. It's a rogue world that spins once every two and a half hours as it floats freely through space.

Now, thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), astronomers have delivered the most detailed "weather report" yet for this strange world, tracking subtle changes in its atmosphere over a full rotation.

The study, published Sept. 26 in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, is the first to track how a brown dwarf's atmosphere changes as it spins, revealing shifts in temperature, chemistry and clouds.

Astronomers say the findings open a new window onto the weather of worlds beyond our solar system.

"These are some of the most precise measurements of the atmosphere of any extra-solar object to date, and the first time that changes in the atmospheric properties have been directly measured," study lead author Evert Nasedkin of the Trinity College Dublin in Ireland said in a statement.

"Understanding these weather processes will be crucial as we continue to discover and characterise exoworlds in the future," study co-author Johanna Vos of Trinity College Dublin said in the same statement.

The JWST's sensitive instruments captured minute changes in brightness as SIMP-0136 spun, letting scientists map its atmospheric layers.

Astronomers had long suspected the flickering light came from patchy clouds. Instead, the study found that SIMP-0136's clouds, made of sand-like grains of hot silicates, are remarkably stable.

The real drama was instead unfolding higher up in the atmosphere, where the team discovered a layer of air nearly 570 degrees Fahrenheit (300 degrees Celsius) warmer than models predicted.

According to the study, the extra warmth is most likely caused by auroras.

On Earth, auroras appear as shimmering curtains of light when charged particles from the solar wind interact with our world's magnetic field.

On SIMP-0136, however, a much stronger magnetic field supercharges this effect, with charged particles slamming into the atmosphere so forcefully that they not only glow but also pump energy into the air itself, heating the world's upper layers.

JWST also detected tiny temperature swings of less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius) in deeper layers, the study notes.

Those tiny temperature changes might be caused by huge storm systems, possibly like Jupiter's Great Red Spot, moving across the surface as the world spins, scientists say.

Because brown dwarfs like SIMP-0136 aren't swamped by the glare of a parent star, they serve as ideal stand-ins for giant exoworlds that orbit distant suns.

By studying their weather in such detail, astronomers are beginning to piece together how atmospheres behave on distant worlds.

With JWST and future observatories such as the Extremely Large Telescope and NASA's planned Habitable Worlds Observatory, astronomers hope to use the same techniques on worlds orbiting distant stars and uncover how their weather shifts and evolves over time.

Lunar samples reveal the far side of the moon, hidden from Earth's view, may have a cooler interior than the near side.

China's Chang'e 6 mission returned the first-ever samples from the far side of the moon in June 2024.

A recent analysis of these fragments, collected from a vast crater inside the moon's South Pole–Aitken (SPA) basin, found that the samples were about 180°F (100°C) cooler than near-side samples gathered by NASA's Apollo missions.

"The near side and far side of the moon are very different at the surface and potentially in the interior. It is one of the great mysteries of the moon," Yang Li, co-author of the study, said in a statement.

"We call it the two-faced moon. A dramatic difference in temperature between the near and far side of the mantle has long been hypothesized, but our study provides the first evidence using real samples."

Unlike the smoother, darker near side marked by vast volcanic plains, the far side has a thicker crust, is more mountainous and heavily cratered and contains far fewer lava-filled basins.

The new findings suggest these differences extend beneath the surface into the moon's interior.

Based on their analysis, the researchers estimate the Chang'e 6 samples were about 2.8 billion years old and formed from lava deep within the moon's mantle at a temperature of about 2,012°F (1,100°C) — roughly 180°F (100°C) cooler than samples from the near side.

The team combined computer simulations with satellite data, modeling how hot the rock was when it crystallized and estimating the temperature of its "parent rock," or the material that melted into magma before solidifying into the sample collected.

The far side is thought to have fewer heat-producing elements, such as uranium, thorium, potassium, phosphorus and rare earth elements — collectively referred to as KREEP.

These elements release heat through radioactive decay. If they migrated toward the near side early in the moon's history, that could explain why it remained hotter, more volcanically active and chemically distinct.

How this imbalance arose remains uncertain. Some theories propose a colossal asteroid impact redistributed the moon’s interior, while others suggest the moon once had a smaller sibling that merged unevenly, enriching the near side with heat-producing elements.

Earth’s gravitational pull may also have influenced the distribution of elements, according to the statement. .

"These findings take us a step closer to understanding the two faces of the moon," Xuelin Zhu, co-author of the study, said in the statement.

"They show us that the differences between the near and far side are not only at the surface but go deep into the interior."

Although the study does not reveal the moon's present-day internal temperatures, researchers say any thermal divide could have persisted for billions of years, shaping the lunar landscape we see today.

Former Rep. Madison Cawthorn will run for Congress in southwest Florida next year, the 30-year-old Republican announced Wednesday.

Cawthorn, who represented North Carolina’s 11th congressional district from 2021-2023, was defeated by Rep. Chuck Edwards in the 2022 GOP primary after a term plagued by a litany of high-profile scandals. He has been registered to vote in Florida since 2023, according to state voter rolls.

Cawthorn also repeatedly maligned his Republican colleagues in Congress, alleging without evidence that some had invited him to cocaine-fueled sex parties. He was also the subject of a leaked video and sexual misconduct and insider trading allegations, and repeatedly brought a handgun to an airport.

Cawthorn will join a crowded GOP primary to fill the deep red seat being vacated by Republican Rep. Byron Donalds, who is running for governor in Florida.

“I’m running for Congress to stand with President Trump, defend our conservative values, and fight to stop the radical left every single time,” Cawthorn said in a campaign launch video posted Wednesday.

The former lawmaker drew sharp condemnations during his single congressional term for inflammatory comments on a wide range of issues, including his insistence after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot that “If our election systems continue to be rigged, and continue to be stolen, it’s going to lead to one place, and it’s bloodshed.”

Cawthorn has also had several run-ins with the law: in 2022, the Republican was arrested for driving while his license was revoked and detained at a North Carolina airport for attempting to bring a gun on a commercial flight. And last month, he was once again arrested in Florida after allegedly missing a court date related to allegedly driving without an active license.

Following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's meeting in New York on Friday with a group of pro-Israel influencers, we learn that Israel is likely paying them a whopping $7,000 per pro-Israel social-media post in a desperate drive to bolster plummeting support of Israel among America's young conservatives.

That's the conclusion of Responsible Statecraft's Nick Cleveland-Stout, based on analysis of a disclosure filed with the US Department of Justice as required by the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). While pro-Israel lobbying heavyweight AIPAC is notoriously exempt from FARA registration, the social media operation comes under the transparency law's provisions because Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is paying for it.

The influence campaign is being facilitated by Bridge Partners, a DC-based firm owned by founders Yair Levi and Uri Steinberg. "[Bridge Partners] has also enlisted the help of a former major in the IDF spokesperson unit, Nadav Shtrauchler," writes Cleveland-Stout. "For legal counsel, Levi and Steinberg have turned to Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, a firm that previously worked for controversial Israeli spyware company NSO Group."

The current phase of the campaign runs from June to November, with a $900,000 budget for a stable of 14 to 17 influencers turning out pro-Israel content. Taking into account disclosed administrative costs and the campaign's expectation that the group will produce 75-90 posts, Responsible Statecraft estimates each post will earn the influencers somewhere between $6,143 and $7,373. The individual influencers are not identified in the filings. However, given they are being paid by a foreign government to engage in political activity, the influencers seemingly have a duty to register as individual agents of the State of Israel.

Netanyahu candid public statements to influencers last week raised eyebrows, as they laid bare Israel's drive to control social media discourse in the United States in a bid to shore up American support. "We're going to have to use the tools of battle," said Netanyahu. "Weapons change over time...the most important ones are in social media. And the most important purchase that is going on right now is...TikTok."

UNC Chapel Hill professor Dwayne Dixon, a self-identified member of the far-left Redneck Revolt gun club, has been placed on administrative leave after mounting scrutiny over his advocacy and involvement in politically motivated, armed left-wing protests.

The university confirmed the suspension to allow for a thorough investigation into allegations that could result in disciplinary action, including possible termination.

“The University of North Carolina has informed Dr. Dwayne Dixon, professor of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, that he has been placed on administrative leave, effective immediately, following recent reports and expressions of concern regarding alleged advocacy of politically motivated violence,” Vice Chancellor for Marketing and Communications Dean Stoyer said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Redneck Revolt and Radical Activism

Dixon teaches Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at UNC. He is openly listed as a member of Redneck Revolt’s Silver Valley chapter, a group described by the Counter Extremism Project as “far-left,” anti-capitalist, and anti-nation-state, opposing police, prisons, and courts.

In 2017, Dixon joined armed counter-protesters at an anti-KKK event in Durham, North Carolina—though the KKK never appeared. Dixon, armed with an AR-15, helped block roadways, alarming the public and drawing charges of “going armed to the terror of people” and having a weapon at a public assembly; those charges were ultimately dropped.

He also attended the infamous Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, where James Fields Jr. rammed his car into a crowd, killing Heather Heyer. Dixon later bragged about chasing James Field with his AR-15 at a Harvard panel and in a January 7, 2018 Facebook post.

During a Harvard panel, Dixon admitted that James Fields “slow rolled” past him several times in his vehicle, adding, “One time he paused right in front of me and I waved him off with my rifle. On his last pass, he accelerated and a block away he killed Heather.”

At a Harvard panel, UNC professor Dwayne Dixon admitted to chasing James Fields with his rifle multiple times before Fields accelerated and killed Heather Heyer at Charlottesville.

In a now-deleted Facebook post, Dixon wrote, “I used this rifle to chase off James Fields from our block of 4th St before he attacked the marchers to the south.”

The video details attempts to connect the CIA, LDS community, UVU, and Israeli academic institutions, raising concerns about secrecy and academic transparency.

According to the investigator, Rusty Needs, listed until recently as a professor in UVU’s CNSS (Center for National Security Studies), vanished from public faculty listings between September 24 and September 26, 2025. The head of the council of deputies in the Russian city of Novaya Kakhovka has died in hospital after being wounded in a Ukrainian drone attack, local governor Vladimir Saldo announced on Wednesday.

Saldo issued a message of condolence to the family of Vladimir Leontiev, describing him as being respected throughout Russia’s Kherson Region.

“Vladimir Pavlovich Leontiev has died in hospital from his injuries. Doctors fought until the very end, but they could not save him,” Saldo wrote.

The 61-year-old Leontiev was injured on Wednesday morning when a Ukrainian drone known as ‘Baba Yaga’ targeted the city.

According to media reports citing the governor’s press service, the UAV that was hunting Leontiev struck him in the back before he could reach shelter.

He sustained a blast injury and serious spinal damage. Two female civilians were also reported injured in the incident.

Saldo noted that Leontiev had long headed the administration of Novaya Kakhovka and was well known in Kherson Region.

He described him as “an honest, principled man, open to people” and called him “a true patriot who loved Russia and Kherson.”

The governor also noted Leontyev’s role as an early supporter of the United Russia party in the region.

Russian media have reported that the strike that killed Leontiev was part of a broader series of attacks carried out by Ukrainian forces against settlements in Kherson Region.

Officials said that within the past 24 hours Ukrainian artillery and drones had launched 68 strikes across 13 populated areas in the region.

Russia’s Defense Ministry also reported that 20 Ukrainian drones had also been downed overnight above Russia’s Belgorod, Rostov, Saratov, and Voronezh regions.

Kiev has routinely launched drone raids deep into Russia in recent months, targeting critical infrastructure and residential areas, and leading to civilian casualties.

Moscow has accused Kiev of “terrorism” and has responded with strikes on Ukrainian military facilities.

Left-wing anarchists are planning a workshop event in Pennsylvania onhow to be a “fugitive” from law enforcement.

Fringe leftist websites are advertising an “Annual Philly Skillshare Convergence” from Oct. 3-5 that will teach skills such as “hiding from drones=,” “practices to resist state coercion” and how to take oneself “off-grid.” The scheduled event shows how some on the far-left are taking precautions as the Trump administration promises swift law enforcement action against activists driving organized political violence.

Similarly titled “skillshare” workshops have been advertised online in recent months in cities around the country —but information for the October event reflects a more explicitly militant tone than others.

“Don’t turn yourself in, be fugitive: repression preparedness material/prefigurative practices to resist state coercion,” a portion of the event’s description reads. Similar topics on the online flyer include “Invisibility for Cyberpunks: hiding from drones, thermal, & night vision,” “Running/Hitting Da Bricks” and using a “one-time pad” to encrypt digital communications.

Other items on theflyer appear to address living without trackable technology, such as “Off-grid Basics: A Discussion & Workshop for Short-Term & Medium-Term Outdoor Living” and “Power Anywhere:Introduction to 12v Electricity and Solar.”

Online announcements of the workshop do not name a specific location, individual organizers or formal groups behind it, insteadasking viewers to contact an encrypted email address for more information.

“We respectfully request that you do not write an article about our event,” an anonymous user of the email address told theDCNF when asked for comment. “You do not have our consent and will not be answering your questions. Thanks!”

The event is also featured on the website“Philly Anti-Capitalist,”which states on its “About” page that it “does not condone illegal activity.” Philly Anti-Cap did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

Instruction at the workshop even extends to“Building Abortion Care Networks & Reproductive Autonomy,” “Meditations on Drug Use & Liberation” and “Safety Planning for Parties, Orgies, and Actions,” according to the online postings.

Violent leftist radicalism has repeatedly captured national attention in recent months, with left-wing suspects leading law enforcement on multi-day manhunts over a July 4 terrorist attack at a Texas Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building and the Sept. 10 assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

Benjamin Song, an Antifa-style or “antifascist” activist, ran from the FBI and Texas police for over a week— after authorities say he opened fire on the Alvaredo ICE facility during an ambush by black-clothed agitators with whom Song had arrived.

Song became one of the Texas’ top ten most wanted fugitives until his July 15 arrest.Authorities later charged two co-defendants with working together to help Song flee from justice via meetings and conversations on Signal, an encrypted text messaging app. More than a dozen people face charges in the July 4 attack, which officials have linked to the anarchist Antifa movement and its goal of overthrowing the U.S. government, according to WFAA.

In 1973, a relatively small circle of leaders commanded most of the institutional and media influence when it came to speaking for “evangelicals” on the Middle East. That media environment centered on a small and fledgling Christian Zionist network forged in the early years of Israeli statehood. This network grew in prominence after the seismic Six-Day War in June 1967, wherein Israel decisively defeated its Arab neighbors.

Many of these spokesmen had one or two degrees of separation from CT founder Billy Graham, the proverbial sun around which much of postwar evangelical-Jewish relations orbited. Graham played a crucial behind-the-scenes role in October 1973 (during the Yom Kippur War), encouraging President Nixon to greenlight the largest airlift in US history to aid Israel.

In the following decade, an entire class of Christian Zionist organizations would emerge and eclipse, at least in numbers, those evangelical authorities of 1973. The movement started by figures like Olson and Young, who were relatively closely aligned with Graham, would soon be displaced by a new crop of fundamentalist and Pentecostal-run organizations.

These were more ideologically (and eschatologically) driven conservatives who commanded far more resources and members than Olson’s denomination and Young’s grad school. Not only that, but their alignments would extend beyond theological stances—and prescriptions for US policy regarding Israel—to support emerging right-wing Israeli politicians like Menachem Begin.

Jerry Falwell Sr., Pat Robertson, and a young John Hagee engaged in dedicated pro-Israel activism beginning in the late 1970s. In 2006, Hagee founded Christians United for Israel, a lobbying organization, with Falwell serving on the board of directors.

Israeli troops are nearing the complete encirclement of Gaza City, Defense Minister Israel Katz says.

He says the IDF is currently seizing the western portion of the Netzarim Corridor — south of Gaza City — up to the coast, “bisecting Gaza between its north and south.”

“This will tighten the encirclement around Gaza City and everyone leaving it to the south will be forced to pass through IDF checkpoints,” Katz says.

Earlier, the military announced that the Rashid coastal road in Gaza would be closed for northbound movement to Gaza City starting at noon.

“This is the last opportunity for Gaza residents who wish to do so to move south and leave Hamas terrorists isolated in Gaza City, in the face of IDF activity that continues with full force,” Katz continues.

He says that those remaining in Gaza City will be “terrorists and supporters of terror.”

“The IDF is preparing for all possibilities and is determined to continue its operations, until the return of all the hostages and the disarmament of Hamas, en route to ending the war,” Katz adds.

His remarks come as Israel awaits the response of Hamas to an American proposal to end the war, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted.

Mass Shutdown Firings To Begin 'In A Day Or Two': Trump Admin

Public safety is a fundamental responsibility of government, and there is a new threat on the horizon.

Malicious drones pose a growing threat to our safety and well-being, and governors are calling on Congress to grant the resources and authority we need to protect our people and infrastructure.

We’ve seen the lethal potential of drones during Russia’s war on Ukraine — as well as the disturbing incursion of their military drones into NATO airspace.

But the use of drones, or unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), is not just a distant threat for us in the United States. Operators of unauthorized drones are endangering public safety and critical infrastructure right here, right now.

States have witnessed numerous intrusions over energy infrastructure, public events, prisons and military bases — presenting real, potential threats to public safety.

In the right hands, a drone is a valuable tool, supporting commerce and priorities like public safety, law enforcement, disaster recovery, and environmental monitoring by extending our reach in areas too difficult or dangerous for humans to access.

But that same maneuverability poses serious dangers in the wrong hands.

Headlines illustrate the rapidly evolving threats. Law enforcement has uncovered attempts to use drones to damage power stations in Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

Unauthorized drones have been tracked flying over chemical plants and pipelines in Louisiana and near major airports; they have collided with firefighting aircraft in California and interfered with hurricane rescue and recovery operations in North Carolina.

Suspicious drones have been spotted near college football and NFL games, prompting safety concerns and even evacuations from the playing fields. Georgia is one of many states confronting the use of drones to smuggle contraband into correctional facilities.

Officials thwarted a plot there, recovering more than 87 drones and 22 weapons before they could reach inmates. A Chinese national was apprehended using drones to surveil naval facilities near Norfolk, Va. — highlighting the threats posed by foreign adversaries.

Whether drone incursions stem from carelessness, criminality or terrorism, state and local officials represent the first line of defense.

With almost 800,000 drones registered in the U.S. — plus an unknown number unregistered — the risks are rapidly outpacing state authority to respond effectively.

Counter-drone capabilities, while advancing, still lag behind the rapid evolution of UAS technology.

According to a survey from Merlin Strategies for the New Statesman,of the 13 to 17-year-olds who intend on voting in the next general election—which must be held no later than 2029—33 per cent said that they would vote for Farage’s Reform party, compared to 27 per cent for Labour, and 12 per cent for formerly governing Conservatives (Tories) and the far-left Greens.
