Oct. 3 (UPI) - A California woman who planned to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh is scheduled to be sentenced Friday.

Sophie Roske, 29, pleaded guilty in April to attempted assassination in a federal court. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. EDT.

The U.S. Department of Justice plans to request that Roske be sentenced to 30 years to life in prison, followed by lifetime supervised release.

"This attempt against the life of a Supreme Court Justice was an attack on the entire judicial system that cannot go unpunished," said Attorney General Pam Bondi earlier this month.

Roske, who is transgender, was charged under her legal name, Nicholas J. Roske. Her attorneys told the court of the name change in September, The New York Times reported.

In her guilty plea, Roske said that in 2022, she "developed a plan to assassinate one or more Associate Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States," had used the Internet to search for the home addresses of the justices and for information on weapons,how to break into a home and how to stab "a person, especially in the neck, strangulation, killing a person in a quiet manner, and how to travel by air with weapons."

Roske got as far as Kavanaugh's neighborhood in Maryland with burglary tools and a gun but stopped the attempt.Two deputy U.S. marshals who were guarding the home saw her, and she walked away.

Roske then called 911 and told the operator she "was having suicidal and homicidal thoughts, that [she] had a firearm in [her] suitcase and that [she] had come from California to kill" Kavanaugh.

Roske is asking for eight years in prison, followed by 25 years of supervised release. Her public defenders note Roske's remorse and concerns that she won't get sufficient care under the President Donald Trump administration's policies requiring transgender women be housed in male prisons and restricting gender-affirming care.

Roske submitted a five-page letter to the court. She apologized to Kavanaugh and his family.

"I am very glad I did not continue," Roske wrote. "I am also sorry for contributing to a trend of political violence in American politics. I can now see how destructive and misguided such acts are, and am ashamed not to have recognized these things sooner."

Roske's family members have also submitted letters insisting they support her as a transgender woman and will help her upon release.

"Please send her home," Roske's grandfather wrote.

Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) is just weeks away from a close approach to Earth that could make it visible to the naked eye in the October night sky.

Read on for spectacular views of this wandering comet and its magnificent tail as captured by astrophotographers around the world.

Astronomers discovered Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) on Jan. 3 using a 60-inch telescope located at the Mt.Lemmon Observatory in Arizona.

The comet is currently heading farther into the solar system and will make its closest approach to Earth on Oct. 21, passing a little over 55 million miles (89 million kilometers) from our planet, before heading on to perihelion — its closest point to the sun — on Nov. 8.

Since its discovery, the comet has brightened significantly, jumping from magnitude +21.5 in January to +7 and beyond, raising hopes that it could become visible to the naked eye from dark sky locations in the coming month if the trend continues.

Remember, magnitude is the scale used by astronomers to chart the apparent brightness of an object in the night sky. The lower the number, the brighter the object. The human eye is able to see bodies with a magnitude of +6.5 under ideal dark sky conditions.

Comets are famously unpredictable. The recent brightening could be a transient outburst rather than a steady increase as the comet approaches to the sun, only time will tell.

Right now, the wandering solar system body is currently visible as a diffuse smudge of light through binoculars, while astrophotographers using specialized cameras attached to powerful backyard telescopes are already capturing breathtaking long-exposure views of the comet's bright nucleus and twisting ion tails.

Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) in pictures

Astronomer Aleix Roig captured this image of Comet Lemmon in the moonless skies above Catalonia, Spain, on Sept. 22, revealing the haunting glow of the central coma from which flows a spectral ion trail.

"In this image, you can clearly see the comet's greenish coma, a result of diatomic carbon (C2) fluorescing in sunlight and its developing tail extending away from the Sun," Roig wrote in a blog post on his astronomy website www.astrocat.info.

"These features make "Lemmon" a striking reminder of the icy wanderers that visit the inner solar system from the distant Oort Cloud."

Jānis Šatrovskis stitched together a stunning timelapse view revealing the extent to which C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) traveled relative to the starfield beyond just a few days later on Sept. 25 from Burtnieki, Latvia.

Even more detailed views came courtesy of astrophotographer Dan Bartlett, who imaged the comet over multiple nights to reveal how the complex structure of its ever-shifting tail evolved over time from his backyard in June Lake, California, over recent weeks.

Bartlett captured the comet's twisting ion tail wax and wane as it was buffeted by the solar wind emanating from our parent star.

Chris Schur produced a spectacular hour-long exposure of Comet Lemmon over Payson, Arizona, on Sept. 30.

"While Comet Lemmon was merely a soft diffuse glow in the binoculars, long exposure imaging revealed a stunning object with a lovely teal colored head turning into a pair of tails - one golden hued made of dust near the head, and a long blue streamer of gas traveling all the way across my 3 degree wide field with the 8inch astrograph," Schur told Space.com in an email.

X user Bray Falls captured yet another gorgeous view of C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) streaking through the skies above Austin, Texas, in early October as the tail showed subtle perturbations brought about by the solar wind.

Chuck's Astrophotography posted a similarly magnificent view on X, showing incredible detail in the tail as it sprawled out against a backdrop of distant stars on Oct. 2

Comet Lemmon is best viewed in the hours preceding dawn in early October and can currently be found between the constellations Ursa Major and Leo Minor.

Following perihelion on Nov. 8, Comet Lemmon will embark on a 1,351-year elliptical orbit that will see the icy body range out 243 times the Earth/sun distance before beginning its return journey to the inner solar system.

We now know which people will fly on Blue Origin's next space tourism mission — most of them, anyway.

On Wednesday (Oct. 1), Blue Origin, which was founded by Amazon's Jeff Bezos, announced the passenger list for NS-36, the next flight of its New Shepard suborbital vehicle. (We don't yet know when NS-36 will launch; that info is coming soon, according to Blue Origin.)

The company gave us five names for NS-36. There will also be a sixth, but that person "asked to remain anonymous until after the flight," Blue Origin wrote in an update on Wednesday.

Here's a brief rundown of the announced five, using information provided in the update.

- Jeff Elgin, founder of FranChoice, a network that helps match people with franchise-owning opportunities.

- Danna Karagussova, founder of Portals, "a multimodal ecosystem that features digital self-regulation tools that fuse art and science," according to Blue Origin. She's also a lifelong mountaineer.

- Dr. Clint Kelly III, an electrical engineer with a long history in computer and robotics research. His work at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the 1980s helped lay the foundation for driverless cars, Blue Origin wrote. He's also a wildlife photographer who wrote a book about penguins. Kelly has already flown with Blue Origin, reaching space on the NS-22 mission in August 2022.

- Aaron Newman, an entrepreneur who founded five software startups. Newman is also a veteran of the U.S. Army and an explorer, having descended into the Mariana Trench, the deepest spot in the world's oceans.

- Vitalii Ostrovsky, a Ukrainian businessman, investor and globetrotter who has lived in more than 100 countries around the world.

As its name suggests, NS-36 will be the 36th spaceflight for New Shepard, which consists of a reusable booster and a reusable capsule. It will be just the 15th New Shepard tourist flight, however; most of the vehicle's missions have been uncrewed research flights.

New Shepard flights — crewed or uncrewed — last 10 to 12 minutes from liftoff to the parachute-aided touchdown of the capsule. Passengers get to experience a few minutes of weightlessness and see Earth against the blackness of space.

It's unclear how much this costs; Blue Origin has not revealed its ticket prices.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky promoted Colonel Andriy Biletsky to the rank of Brigadier General. Biletsky has said the purpose of the Ukrainian right is to fight the "Semitic-led untermenschen [subhumans]."

Ukraine has carried out a drone attack on the city of Gorlovka in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), injuring at least three people, according to local officials.

The Donbass city, which is located close to the front line, has been repeatedly shelled by Kiev’s forces.

According to Mayor Ivan Prikhodko, UAVs first struck on Friday afternoon, damaging energy infrastructure and vehicles. Later in the evening, drones hit a school and an apartment block.

DPR head Denis Pushilin said earlier that two teenagers in Gorlovka were injured by an explosive device in a separate incident.

According to Russia’s Foreign Ministry, 27 civilians were killed and around 160 wounded in Ukrainian strikes across the country between 15 and 24 September.

Gorlovka had a Soviet-era population of over 330,000, but this had fallen to around 240,000 by 2021, the year before the escalation of the Ukraine conflict.

The city is best known as the subject of a brutal assault by Ukrainian forces attempting to crush the Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR) in July 2014.

Despite being repeatedly encircled by Kiev’s troops and subjected to heavy artillery and missile fire, the defenders repelled the attacks, holding their ground against superior numbers and equipment.

A major counter-offensive by DNR forces in late August 2014 ultimately relieved pressure, securing the city’s self-declared freedom.

The casualties inflicted on the civilian population by Ukrainian shelling were widely presented as evidence of Kiev’s aggression against its own people.

The military confirms carrying out a strike in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood that reportedly killed 18 Palestinians, including children, saying it had targeted a Hamas operative.

The strike earlier today, in an area that has been under evacuation orders for weeks, targeted a Hamas operative who “posed a threat to troops operating in the area,” the IDF says in response to a query.

Fried shark and maggots: Indonesia's free meal program poisons thousands of children

Idoh's daughters were excited when their primary school started serving free lunches last month.

But just two weeks in, after eating a dish of chicken, rice, tofu and salad, she said her children felt sick and needed medical treatment.

She said her younger daughter "wanted to vomit, but couldn't" while her older daughter vomited and was treated in a makeshift emergency clinic near their school in Cipongkor, West Java.

"This has never happened before. Two weeks ago, everything was fine," Idoh said.

The meals were served as part of Indonesia's free meal program, known locally as "Makan Bergizi Gratis" (MBG), which was launched earlier this year.

A key campaign promise by President Prabowo Subianto, the program was designed to combat malnutrition by providing daily meals to schoolchildren and pregnant women.

But critics say the rollout has been plagued by poor oversight, questionable food sourcing and unhygienic kitchen conditions.

Fried shark, maggots and glass shards

Sixteen-year-old student Neng Laras is one of thousands of Indonesian children who have fallen ill after consuming meals from the MBG program.

Laras also reported feeling nauseous after finishing her free meal at school.

"I didn't vomit, but other students did," Laras said.

In West Java alone, where Laras and Idoh live, more than 1,000 students were recently treated for severe stomach pain, dizziness and shortness of breath.

In Mamuju, West Sulawesi, dozens of students were poisoned, allegedly due to expired sauce.

HUNDREDS of sailors stood mesmerised as they gazed up at what they claim was a 40ft-wide "UFO orb" hovering above a US Navy aircraft carrier.

A "glowing orange ball" spotted over the flight deck of the nuclear-powered USS Ronald Reagan has gone down as one of the most mysterious sightings in US military history.

And it's never been explained.

Documentary filmmaker Dave C. Beaty - who produced 2019 film The Nimitz Encounters about another famous Navy UFO case - has been probing the mystery for years.

Beaty has interviewed a number of sailors who, to this day, insist that what they saw off the East Coast that night in early 2004 was a UFO.

Efforts to understand what took place have been hampered by the fact no official confirmation was ever given.

And one witness claimed senior officers acted suspiciously in the aftermath.

But Beaty told The Sun he believes there are more witnesses who can provide testimony - and believes their accounts are key to narrowing down when the event actually took place.

Seaman Patrick Gokey, who was serving on the ship that night, said the object "did not move in ways that I’ve seen other aircraft maneuver and it was faster than anything I’ve ever seen".

He estimated as many as 200 sailors saw it.

And former Navy quartermaster Karol Olesiak, who was on watch from 8pm to 12am and was responsible for the ship's logbook, also recalled the glowing orb.

He claimed it was about 40ft wide and hovered above the carrier for four hours from around 8pm onwards.

He described it as reminding him of Biblical descriptions of the "burning bush" and having "negative energy".

Olesiak alleged he was told not to log the encounter by the Officer of the Deck. He told The Sun: "I asked, should I be logging this?

"I might have asked the conning officer and I don’t remember exactly what he said, but the impression that I got was that this should not be in the official log."

He also said there was an eerie calm among senior officers and bridge crew - as if they had seen such phenomena before.

"The entire bridge team was pilots," he said. "My assumption is yes [they had seen something similar before], but I asked an officer if any of them were talking about it the next day and he said 'yes'."

Olesiak believes its "possible" someone may have taken photos and videos of the object - but the incident occurred before camera phones were common and crew did not carry their mobiles.

"It’s hard to believe somebody would be sitting on it for this long," he said.

Derek Smith, a former Boatswain’s Mate Seaman, said he remembers the sighting "as if it occurred yesterday", calling it the "most mysterious thing" he has ever seen.

Smith, who was on starboard watch, said he noticed "all the people on the flight deck" looking up at the object.

He said the next day was simply "normal" - but his shipmates were discussing it, some dismissing the giant object as a "weather balloon" - to which he said "hell no".

"I [can] still visualise this object in my head to a tee regardless of 18 years having passed," Smith previously told The Sun.

"I do believe the government knows more than what they lead us to believe."

Smith stressed he was "an average Joe" with no paranormal experiences before or since.

He said: "All I know is it was something I could not explain. I could say now though I am starting to feel like I witnessed something special."

Derek's colleague claims she tried to report it to the bridge, but was told to "quit smoking crack".

And she also claims that while speaking to the ship's bridge, they said they were tracking the object on radar as it followed them doing "swoop" maneuvers.

Some of the witness testimonies vary, offering different times of day and duration of the encounter - but all agree the orange fireball was spotted near the ship.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker on Saturday said he was informed by the Trump administration that the Defense Department plans to federalize 300 members of the Illinois National Guard and deploy them within his state.

“It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will,” Pritzker said in a statement, adding that he was given an ultimatum by Defense Department officials to “call up your troops, or we will.”

“I want to be clear: there is no need for military troops on the ground in the State of Illinois,” Pritzker added. “I will not call up our National Guard to further Trump’s acts of aggression against our people.”

The White House and the Defense Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Pritzker’s statement or a potential deployment of troops in Illinois, though the president has for weeks threatened to surge federal law enforcement and National Guard troops to Chicago.

The news comes as the Trump administration and officials in Portland, Oregon, await a ruling from a federal judge regarding a separate deployment of National Guard troops that the president authorized to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in the city on Friday.

That move activated 200 National Guard troops in Portland as part of the president’s stated agenda to curb crime in American cities.

The state of Oregon and the city of Portland sued the Trump administration, seeking a temporary restraining order in an attempt to stop the president from sending National Guard troops there, pushing back on the president’s claims that protests were violent or out of control.

The Defense Department announced that it had activated troops to support and protect federal employees and property in the Portland area while they await a federal judge’s decision in the case.

The case comes after Trump said in a social media post last week that he was directing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to deploy troops to Portland, claiming that the city was “under siege from attack by Antifa and other domestic terrorists.”

The president has pointed to protests near Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in Oregon as evidence of his claims.

“We ultimately have a perception-versus-reality problem,” Caroline Turco, senior deputy city attorney for Portland, said during a hearing in front of U.S. District Judge Karin J. Immergut on Friday. “The perception is that it is World War II out here. The reality is that this is a beautiful city with a sophisticated resource that can handle the situation.”

A lawyer for the federal government — Deputy Assistant Attorney General Eric Hamilton — pointed to isolated incidents of protesters lighting incendiary devices and throwing rocks as evidence that troops are necessary to defend against “cruel radicals who have laid siege” to ICE facilities.

Trump has deployed National Guard troops to two other American cities this year — Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. In California, the Trump administration said it sent National Guard troops and Marines to quell anti-ICE protests, while in Washington, the president said the National Guard troops were deployed to fight crime.

In early September, a federal judge ruled that Trump’s deployment of Marines and National Guardsmen to Los Angeles was illegal. Days after that ruling, attorneys for Washington, D.C., also sued to challenge the deployment of troops in the nation’s capital.

The president has also threatened to deploy National Guard troops to other American cities run by Democratic mayors, like Baltimore and New Orleans.

Trump’s decision to deploy troops to multiple American cities received renewed scrutiny earlier this week after he told senior military leaders on Monday that “we should use some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military, National Guard.”

Police were called to downtown Indianapolis at around 12:30am following reports of a disturbance before finding two injured people, one of whom was Sanchez.

The 38-year-old, who was in town to cover Sunday's NFL game between the Colts and the Las Vegas Raiders as a commentator for Fox Sports, is now recovering at a local hospital in 'stable' condition, the network has announced.

According to FOX59 anchor Angela Ganote, Sanchez was not cooperative with police when they first arrived on the scene.

Ganote alleges that another man listed as the victim in the police report informed cops that he was delivering food when the Fox commentator told him he needed to move his vehicle and couldn't park where he was.

Sanchez is accused of threatening, following and attacking the man, who tried to pepper spray him unsuccessfully. He alleges it was at that time that he defended himself with a knife.

Officers noted that the alleged victim had a significant injury to his face, Ganote added. Sanchez has not yet been interviewed by police.

A separate FOX59 report claims he was stabbed in the chest during the altercation, which took place near Loughmiller’s Pub & Eatery.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department released a statement on Saturday afternoon regarding the incident, which took place near Senate Avenue and West Washington Street.

'The incident involved two adult males, resulting in one man receiving lacerations and the other sustaining injuries consistent with stab wounds. Detectives believe this was an isolated incident between the two men and not a random act of violence,' the IMPD statement reads.

'Both individuals, who are not local residents, have been identified. IMPD Aggravated Assault detectives are continuing the investigation and have reviewed video footage of the incident. Both men received medical treatment. The man with the apparent stab wounds remains hospitalized in stable condition.'..

When the wheels hit the ground again, all three touched and then the nose wheel collapsed. The plane, now on two wheels, was being driven into the ground and the propeller and engine began to be pushed back into the passenger compartment.

Barrett said just as he thought it was going to be all over and he would be crushed, the left wheel hit a boulder and the plane stopped and immediately flipped.

“It sent my face into the panel and with such force that it pressed my left eye back in the socket three-eighths of an inch. Broke all the bones around the eye and sent me rocketing back with such force in my chair that I broke the seat off the rail in back of me,” Barrett told Junge. “And I am upside down in the airplane with the plane tipped over on its wings.”

Barrett saw a flame in the motor and realized that he was still alive. He took his seat belt off, tried to check on Kealey, and crawled out of the plane. The door had been ripped away. He recalled using the same handkerchief that he tried to help Kealey with to stop the blood that was pouring from his own face.

A firetruck pulled up, and a firefighter ran toward Barrett. Barrett recognized him as Sam Kelly, who served on the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission.

“I was so glad to see someone, I stuck my hand out and said, ‘How are you Sam?’” he recalled.

Barrett then collapsed, unconscious.

Family Learns About Crash

Back in Cheyenne at the Barrett home, Richard Barrett, then 17, remembers that evening their doorbell rang. When he went to answer the door, Monsignor James O’Neill, their parish priest from St. Mary’s Cathedral, stood there and asked if his mother, Ann, was home.

The priest then informed the family that their husband and father had been in a plane crash and was undergoing treatment at the hospital in Rawlins.

Then an assistant attorney general, Jack Speight, called and told them that a state highway patrolman would be by to pick them up and take them to Rawlins.

“Of course we were mortified, because we were trying to visualize a situation where my dad would be in a hospital, having survived a plane crash,” Richard Barrett said.

They were taken by the highway patrolman to the hospital and walked into the room where James Barrett was being treated.

“Mom and I were absolutely shocked, because my dad looked like a bomb had exploded,” he said. “He was so bruised and battered in his face … yet he was alive, and he survived what many pilots have told me over the years would be a one in a million survival to have crash-landed a plane and got out of it.”

Richard Barrett said years later when he was a practicing attorney, he was in a cafe in Rawlins and a man walked up to him and asked if he was Richard Barrett. He then proceeded to tell him that he was a bread truck driver in Rawlins and that on one of his dad’s low flights over the city, the plane was coming right at his truck.

He recounted how he jumped out of the truck as it was moving, and it ran down another 30 feet and hit a car parked at the bottom of the hill. He had rolled into the street.

“He said my dad had pulled up just in time before hitting the street,” Richard Barrett said.

Ukrainians think corruption is worsening – survey

Most citizens say graft has increased since 2022, according to a new national poll

Most Ukrainians have said corruption in the country has worsened since escalation of the conflict with Russia in February 2022, a new survey by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) has shown.

In findings released on Friday, the poll revealed that 71% of respondents believe the level of corruption has increased over the past three years. Another 20% said they had not noticed any change, while only 5% felt the situation had improved. The survey was conducted over September 19-28 and included 1,029 participants across the country.

According to the survey, even among those who trust Vladimir Zelensky,62% believe corruption has increased since the escalation of the conflict.

The institute reported that this negative perception was consistent across all regions, concluding that “corruption remains an extremely serious problem in the eyes of the public.”

Ukraine has faced a string of corruption scandals in recent months involving government officials, medical professionals, clergy, and military recruiters. Some cases include bribery schemes to help individuals evade conscription during the ongoing mobilization efforts.

Corruption in defense procurement has also come under scrutiny. In August, several high-ranking officials were detained over a scheme involving the purchase of electronic warfare systems. Earlier this year, the Defense Ministry was linked to a food supply fraud case worth nearly $18 million. In January 2024, investigators uncovered a $40 million embezzlement operation involving fake weapons contracts.

In July, Zelensky attempted to bring the country’s anti-corruption bodies, NABU and SAPO, under government control only for street protests and pressure from Western sponsors to force him to back off on the plan two weeks later.

The issue of corruption has drawn international attention. That same month, US President Donald Trump remarked that Ukraine had been expected to use American aid to buy military equipment but suggested not all the funds were being properly spent. Kremlin spokesmanDmitry Peskov claimed Western aid had to a large extent been “stolen in Ukraine.”

Former US National Security Adviser Michael Waltz called Ukraine “one of the most corrupt nations in the world” and urged stricter monitoring of foreign assistance.

Energy giant Naftogas has reported sustaining “critical” damage in the long-range operation

Russian forceshave struck multiple Ukrainian military facilities and the gas infrastructure that powersthem in an overnight long-range operation, the Defense Ministry reported on Friday.

Lithuania’s culture minister has resigned after just one week in office after abacklash triggered by his hesitation to say who Crimea belongs to.

Crimea and four other former Ukrainian regions overwhelmingly voted to join Russia in referendums. However, Ukraine and its Western backers – including Lithuania – continue to insist the regions were “annexed” by Moscow.

In an interview with news portal Lrytas on Thursday, Ignotas Adomavicius was asked who Crimea belongs to and initially refused to answer, calling the question political.

”These are provocative questions, so let’s not even go there, because we’re not even talking about the Culture Ministry here,” Adomavicius said, urging the interviewer to stick to cultural issues.

Later in the interview he clarified his stance in line with Vilnius’ official position by calling Crimea “occupied Ukrainian territory.”However, his initial hesitation proved politically costly.

The interview sparked a backlash from the ruling Social Democratic Party of Lithuania. President Gitanas Nauseda’s office issued a statement early on Fridaydescribing the minister's stance as “incomprehensible, unacceptable” and potentially disqualifying. Shortly after, Adomavicius announced his resignation.

Along with its Baltic neighbors Estonia and Latvia, Lithuania has adopted a more confrontational stance toward Moscow since the Ukraine conflict escalated in 2022. As one of Kiev's most vocal supporters, Vilnius has been at the forefront of demanding tougher sanctions on Moscow.

Ukraine has carried out a drone attack on the city of Gorlovka in Russia’s Donetsk People’sRepublic (DPR), injuring at least three people, according to local officials.

The Donbass city, which is located close to the front line,has been repeatedly shelled by Kiev’s forces.

According to Mayor Ivan Prikhodko, UAVs first struck on Friday afternoon, damaging energy infrastructure and vehicles.Later in the evening, drones hit a school and an apartment block.

DPR head Denis Pushilin said earlier that two teenagers in Gorlovka were injured by an explosive device in a separate incident.

According to Russia’s Foreign Ministry, 27civilians were killed and around 160 woundedin Ukrainian strikes across the country between 15 and 24 September.

Gorlovka had a Soviet-era population of over 330,000, but this had fallen to around 240,000 by 2021, the year before the escalation of the Ukraine conflict.

The city is best known as the subject of a brutal assault by Ukrainian forces attempting to crush the Donetsk People’s Republic(DNR) in July 2014.

Despite being repeatedly encircled by Kiev’s troops and subjected to heavy artillery and missile fire,the defenders repelled the attacks, holding their ground against superior numbers and equipment.

Bill Gates slams Sweden over increased military spending

The Scandinavian nation should instead be funneling funds into global humanitarian initiatives, the US billionaire has said

US billionaire Bill Gates has criticized Sweden for earmarking ever more money for the military, while slashing its financial commitment to international aid programs.

In an interview to Sweden’s Dagens Industri newspaper on Wednesday, Gates, who is known for his involvement in many philanthropic projects around the world, expressed regret that the Scandinavian country’s budget bill this year does not include allocations for the Global Fund – an organization that fights AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria worldwide.

Commenting on Stockholm’s growing military spending, Gates said that the issue “should be debated more.”

“Is this what people want to see, and is it really necessary?” he inquired.

Foreign Trade Minister Benjamin Dousa responded to Gates’ criticism by defending the country’s shift in priorities.

”If we don’t want our children to speak Russian in the future, we need to have a very strong defense,” he insisted, speaking to TT news agency.

Following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Sweden abandoned its centuries-long neutrality and applied for NATO membership, which it was granted two years later.

In July, state broadcaster SVT reported that the Swedish government intended to raise the maximum conscription age for former military officers from 47 to 70 as part of its push to double personnel to 115,000 by 2030.

Earlier this year, the country’s parliament also passed legislation pledging an additional 300 billion kronor ($31.4 billion) in spending on the armed forces, on top of annual budget increases.

At a summit in The Hague in June, NATO member states committed to increasing defense spending from the previous threshold of 2% to 5% of GDP by 2035.

The European Union, of which Sweden is also a member, has similarly approved several programs aimed at boosting military spending this year, including the €800 billion ReArm Europe initiative.

Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed claims that Moscow harbors aggressive plans toward Sweden.

Putin similarly described claims of imminent Russian aggression against EU member states as a “nonsense mantra,” calling the very idea “inconceivable.”

It is late afternoon on Inauguration Day 2025. Protesters fill the downtowns of American cities, enraging the newly sworn president. Send in the military, he demands. Invoke the Insurrection Act. Federalize the National Guard in all 50 states. Tell the troops to use all the force they need to clear the streets.

The starting scenarios did not test policy questions within the ordinary bounds of democratic debate: taxes, regulation, climate change. We focused instead on threats to democracy itself and the institutions that uphold it, such as misuse of regulatory or prosecutorial powers to punish political foes.

None of the exercises left us sanguine. Participants were almost uniformly sobered by the paucity of effective constraints on abuse of power. The exercises showed emphatically that Trump’s authoritarian promises, with implementing details in the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, pose a profound threat to constitutional government. Defenders of democracy, our participants assessed, must do more than they are doing now to prepare. The exercises suggest that it would not be possible to block every abuse, but there are tools available to deflect, delay and diminish the damage.

Our exercises included a scenario that tried to predict what might happen on Inauguration Day next year. When the Red commander in chief invoked the Insurrection Act, which enables a president to deploy military forces domestically to suppress rebellion, among other things, Blue players filed a long-shot challenge in court. The judge, who was designated as nonaligned, dismissed their complaint. Courts have interpreted the language of the act to give the president exclusive authority to determine when to use the power it grants, which is what makes it so dangerous.

The Blue House of Representatives moved to cut off federal funds for any domestic troop deployments. The Red attorney general, played by Peter Keisler, who held that position on an acting basis under President George W. Bush, found a way to use existing budget authority.

The Blue governor, played by New Jersey’s former Republican governor Christine Todd Whitman, tried to prevent the federal call-up of her state Guard. First, she deployed it under her own authority. Then she urged the state adjutant general, played by retired Air Force Maj. Gen. William Enyart, to disobey the president’s order. (If he did so in real life, he would be relieved of command and court-martialed.)

Unexpectedly, the Red governor, played by a retired GOP state legislator, also objected. He wanted to keep his Guard soldiers at home in case of state emergency. And activating the troops would pull them from essential jobs such as police officers, firefighters and paramedics.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, played by retired Army Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, began asking questions.

What happened next was not the “deep state” conspiracy of right-wing imaginings. Nobody in our exercise took any step to undermine civilian control of the military or disregard an order from the commander in chief.

And yet, the chairman paused. All officers swear an oath to the Constitution, not to the president personally. The Uniform Code of Military Justice requires them, under penalty of prosecution, to disobey an unlawful order. And senior military leaders promise under oath, at Senate confirmation hearings, to give their unvarnished advice.

In that spirit, the chairman asked the president to define the mission more clearly. Under exceptional authorities, the military could “assist” state and local law enforcement, he said, but Blue governors and mayors were denying any need for federal assistance.

What rules of engagement did the president have in mind for use of force on Americans exercising First Amendment rights? The judge advocate general, the chairman said, would have to review the rules for compliance with military law.

Fed up, the president, played by a former GOP party leader, fired the chairman. Then another senior general, played by a retired four-star, pointed out that mobilizing every state’s National Guard would consume about half of all forces designated for foreign contingencies. Adversaries might seize the opportunity to do something dangerous.

The president waved that point away, demanding that the general “restore law and order” in the cities and “defend the country against antifa.” The general tried to help him translate that language into an executable military order. The president cut in: “You’re fired, too.”

Border Patrol officers were attacked by domestic terrorists who used vehicles to ram federal agents.

No it is not (nor is that the argument on the 2nd point) as per the EO which addresses the Johnson case directly specifically so it can be brought to SCOTUS for final ruling. Arson is not free speech. If it were YOU could burn YOUr trash in the street and claim 1st amendment protection.

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered:

Section 1. Purpose. Our great American Flag is the most sacred and cherished symbol of the United States of America, and of American freedom, identity, and strength. Over nearly two-and-a-half centuries, many thousands of American patriots have fought, bled, and died to keep the Stars and Stripes waving proudly. The American Flag is a special symbol in our national life that should unite and represent all Americans of every background and walk of life. Desecrating it is uniquely offensive and provocative. It is a statement of contempt, hostility, and violence against our Nation — the clearest possible expression of opposition to the political union that preserves our rights, liberty, and security. Burning this representation of America may incite violence and riot. American Flag burning is also used by groups of foreign nationals as a calculated act to intimidate and threaten violence against Americans because of their nationality and place of birth.

Notwithstanding the Supreme Court’s rulings on First Amendment protections, the Court has never held that American Flag desecration conducted in a manner that is likely to incite imminent lawless action or that is an action amounting to “fighting words” is constitutionally protected. See Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397, 408-10 (1989).

My Administration will act to restore respect and sanctity to the American Flag and prosecute those who incite violence or otherwise violate our laws while desecrating this symbol of our country, to the fullest extent permissible under any available authority.
