This board is getting incredibly inactive these days… I remember how busy this place was during the '16 LM and '17 Indy 500, in fact those threads are still here.

So I've made this as a last-ditch attempt to spark life into the old board. Speak whatever's on your mind, in particular about F1 or racing in general.

Personally, I think had bad luck not hit the team, Ferrari would have been double Drivers & Constructors champions in 1982 and 1983. No doubt about the former; both Villeneuve and Pironi were guaranteed to win the championship that year due to such a magnificent car. To lose one driver is awful, to lose another in the same season must be unthinkable. Had both drivers survived into the next year, they would've retained their championships easily. Ferrari may have become a force to be reckoned with during the mid '80s instead of struggling with the likes of Johansson and Alboreto driving a turbo that loved to blow itself up. McLaren and Williams might not have had the decade to themselves.

I was wrong in saying this was the first time Gio out qualified kimi. He's out qualified him 4 times now.

Anyways. Contrary to my prediction Lewis did not overtake Bottas on the first turn and then proceed to coast the rest of the race. Instead, Giovinazzi fucked up, beached his car in the gravel and the stewards inexplicably called for a full safety car. This fucked Bottas' race up. So in the end Lewis still GOT IN THERE. Lewis is now the most successful driver in the history of the British GP.

Sebastian Vettel seemingly doesn't give a fuck anymore. He pulled a Ricciardo on the rear of Verstappen.

All in all, it was an entertaining race. It's really frustrating that Bottas lost the race to no fault of his own.

Gios fuck up seemed really suspicious and really convenient for Lewis tbh

I agree with pretty much everything. Except Monaco. I understand it's a classic circuit and everything but it really doesn't make for good races anymore. Not with how large the cars are today. And even though your proposed car length is shorter than the contemporary length, I still think it'd be a boring race. Either make it a simple time attack event of some sort, have the teams make one-event cars (which would be insanely expensive and therefore impractical) or remove it completely.

Little late of a response, forgot I posted this.

Personally I see Monaco as less of a race and more of an event. Even 90 years on, it's still the most visually distinctive circuit of them all. A seafront filled with billions of dollars worth of private yachts at any one time, the only underpass/tunnel section of any track, the tightest hairpins on the calendar and the rolling mountainside with the (((elite's))) real estate having front row seats to the whole spectacle. The only track built since which even matches this level of aesthetic is perhaps Baku, and that's very recent.

Racing there has always been a challenge given its short distance and thin roads; even at the fastest point of the circuit, the tunnel, the cars aren't doing much more than 140 MPH. That's touring car speed. As a result you aren't going to be seeing spectacular passes that often and the entertainment factor has to come from something else, whether it's crashes, wheel-to-wheel battles, masterclasses in the wet, or a backmarker holding on to a high position for dear life.

But for all its boring races, once in a while it will reward you with an amazing race that will be remembered for decades. 1982, 1984, 1992, 1996 and 2004 all produced absolutely stunning races that you would not have seen at any other venue. That you could not have seen at any other venue. Because they lack what Monaco has in spades.

This was a really good book.

I like the author's opinion that Senna inadvertently killed himself because Schumacher was so fast and Senna was plain scared of Schumacher, so Senna at age 34 was pushed beyond the point of recklessness into pure daredevilry in an attempt to stave off the inevitable triumph of the new king. People love to blame everything except Senna, but it was ultimately Senna's fault.

Though I always like it when somebody challenges the Senna = God narrative, that's a bit harsh IMHO.

The way I see it, Senna sensed he was under tremendous pressure after having not scored at the first two races of the season. Schumacher was merely one part of the equation. He needed not only to finish, but to win. Choking at the first hurdle is one of the worst positions for a driver to be in, and in the worst-case scenarios they never get over it (e.g. Lauda in 1985, Hill in 1997, Hakkinen in 2001) And it was Ratzenberger's death on Saturday that fueled him to achieve this. He leapt into the lead and would hold it until the kingdom of salvation took him home. He drove that Williams beyond its physical limits. He demanded the steering column be illegally moved into a better position, and this was done at the cost of structural rigidity, which ultimately killed him when it snapped.

And remember, in 1994 careers were still a lot shorter than they are now, particularly at the top. Sure, you could do what Alboreto or Johansson or Alesi did and stay in the sport well past your prime until you're running a backmarker, but to still be running one of the big three in your 13th season was an achievement matched by few in those days, and by that point you were on your last legs. Patrese, Mansell and Prost were the only three in then-recent memory to have been in that position. Now we have people like Hamilton, Alonso and Raikkonen comfortably winning races into their 15th seasons with still a lot of life in them. Senna proved in 1993 he had more than enough left in the tank to keep going till at least 1996 I'd wager, but his best days of '88 - '91 were behind him. If he didn't win, they'd think he was a has-been and kick him out for some new blood.

It's not truly ruined, unlike the yearly South American rally that happens every January and nobody has given a shit about since Red Bull monopolized the whole competition with KAMAZ/Volkswagen I refuse to call it the Dakar because it fucking isn't. The Dakar rally died in 2007 and will probably never be revived. The terror problems have only gotten worse since.
