This question probably gets asked millions of times, but if given the opportunity to take full control of the FIA, what would you do to F1 to make it great again?

Me?

>Chassis spec reverted to pre-1998 regulations/measurements with HANS installed

>All electronic AIDS removed

>The following engine choices available:

BMW Mxx (V6 Turbo)

Cosworth DFV (V8)

Ferrari 0xx (V12)

Honda RAxxx (V6 Turbo)

Mercedes-Benz FO-xxx (V10)

Renault RSx (V10)

>In-house powerplants would be more than welcome, but in order for such a team to get their engine homologated it must be competitive against the default DFV unit for all fledgling teams else it will get rejected

>The following tire choices available:

Bridgestone

Goodyear

Michelin

Pirelli

>Maybe Avon too, as they're quite popular in privateer formula series

>Safety Car no longer exclusively Mercedes-Benz

>It would be a personal choice of the track owners/race organizers to select the course car (so you'd probably see an 80s Ferrari 348 at Monza again as they're still the non-F1 course marshal vehicle more than 25 years later), and maybe a Countach back at Monaco if not a newer supercar

>Non-championship rounds make a comeback, GP2 cars and drivers are eligible for entry to test their might

>15 regular rounds, with a 16th that alternates every year like the Olympics at a new venue.

>Monaco, Silverstone, Monza and Spa are all protected and cannot be modified or removed from the calendar

>Hockenheim will be de-built back to its pre-2002 configuration

Watching the coverage of the practice sessions and I'm seeing an alarming number of people sperg out with "lol DAE think this is boring and do Americans really watch this?" so I figure it's about time to set the record straight once and for fucking all.

>Racing an oval is a demanding task

The floorboards of a NASCAR can reach 170 degrees celsius. An average driver will lose around 7 pounds a race in sweat alone. You will get some painful blisters on your feet.

>There are no breaks on an oval

From the minute the green flag is out until the minute it's in or you decide to pit, you are going to go full speed for the entire duration without cease.

>Wipe out on a circuit track and lose a few positions, maybe occasionally you can save face if you don't damage your car.

Wipe out on an oval and at the very least you are going to lose half the field that's behind you, provided you don't smash into either the inner or outer walls or get Zanardi'd by another car racing at over 200 MPH and wake up in the hospital without your legs. Your tires are going to be completely fucked by the way and will need changing thus costing you more time.

>Setups are much more important

On an average circuit you could maybe bang in 100 or so practice laps before the event and fine-tune your car to a high points finish if not a podium or outright win. On an oval you're going to need to sacrifice everything for that final hundredth of a second and go round the circuit maybe thousands of times in total. If it results in you walking like a crab for the week after the race then so be it.

Ferrari loyalty at the worst time, but I remember in a F1 Racing magazine interview, he hated the fact he signed the Williams contract, and Williams didn't want to announce him yet. He called it a sign of disrespect.

A lot of in team fighting and politics. Technical team had issues too, John Barnard was able to setup a technical team in England. The V12 wasn't good for aerodynamics and weight either.

Team structure was a huge issue too. Michael Schumacher used his team status and politics to bring in Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne. They really fixed the team structure.

One example was Ferrari didn't have a seperate gearbox department and Ross put that in.

That was when Ferrari hired a lot of the ex-Honda engineers, most notably Osamu Goto, to work on their engines.

http://www.nsxprime.com/forum/showthread.php/59527-Something-I-read

>Again jokingly, “Ferrari lured most of our F1 Engineers to design engines for their F1 and road cars - After our (Honda) withdraw from F1 in 1992. Mr. Goto (Head of Honda V10 and V12 F1 Engine Program between 1988 to 1992) used to often called me from the Ferrari factory (where he was working) and telling me they really should slap a big H on the Ferrari's Engine Block and Ferrari F1 cars were powered by Honda.”

>Damon Hill

What kind of fucking moron goes from winning the championship for Williams to driving for Arrows within the space of 6 months? I mean don't get me wrong, Hill was already 36 when he won the WDC so his career was drawing to close after just 6 seasons, but he definitely still had a couple extra years of talent in him. By the time he came to his senses and moved to Jordan, the damage had already been done. He got his ass kicked by RSC and HHF on a regular basis, and he had to suck Eddie Jordan's dick via team radio to make sure the former didn't overtake him at the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix and deny him a final win.

>Jacques Villeneuve

I don't know what the fuck it is they put in the water supply over at Williams, but 2 years after winning WDC he moved to a no-name BAR that would take until 2004 to get strong, and by that point he left for Sauber. He was promised a drive at McLaren for 2002 but when Raikkonen turned out to be a much better option he got dumped. By the end of his career he was probably giving BJs behind his local Tim Hortons just to make ends meet, as he turned into the most egotistical unlikable prick the sport will ever see. Although I was against it at the time, it's a shame Schumacher didn't run Villeneuve into the wall at 200 mph instead of a simple love tap and spared us from such a miserable waste of motherfucking space that wouldn't even let video games use his name.

>Eddie Irvine

Of course, he had some shitty moments while at Ferrari (7 retirements in a row in 1996!), but in the early 2000s he was clearly destined for greater things than Jaguar.

4th place at Monaco in 2000, 3rd place a year later, and another 3rd at the 2002 Italian GP. Herbert, Burti and de la Rosa didn't have shit on this guy. It's clear he was pulling the team, not the other way around and quite frankly, deserved better. At least he had fun.

>Heinz Beanz Frentzen

This man went from driving for a still-good Jordan team, to an abysmal Prost (which collapsed at the end of the year), to Arrows (which collapsed at the end of that year), to Sauber, where he scored a podium at the UPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

>Patrick Head

Williams has a history as a catty and petty team, but Patrick Head has been responsible for a number of these instances.

When Frank Williams was basically potatoed from crashing a rental car (I still want to know what happened that made this a crippling event) Patrick Head ran the team. Patrick Head had massive bias in favor of Nigel Mansell, when number 1 status had been contractually promised to Nelson Piquet on account of his status and his bringing honda engines among other things.

Patrick Head is a dick.

New year, new cars, a few new drivers, but same old story? Lets find out!

As one might have noticed, the cars have gone back to being more aero focused meaning they are quite fast around the corners again. The tyres should not need no more nursing around which in theory lead to divers being more aggressive.

New comers this year are Stroll and Stoffel.

Ocon now starts his first full season in Force Pinkdia.

Other notable driver changes are Bottas to Mercedes, Hulk to Renault and K-MAG to HAAS.

Australia traditionally doesn't offer up the most exciting racing as the teams are still finding their feet but that is not going to prevent you from watching this race in an ungodly hour does it?

Things to watch out for:

Is Mercedes still the top dog?

Is Ferrari the real deal?

Can McLaren Honda complete one lap without an engine change?

Can RedBull find their aero magic again?

Can HAAS perform a miracle like last year again?

>tl;dr: advocating yet another major redesign of the cars

I've always thought that that's a bit backwards, the design of the cars should come the engineers trying to make the fastest machine on the grid, not from the rule makers and an overly restrictive formula.

>>63322

>meanwhile consider an active aero solution

So just DRS 2.0?

If they are this obsessed with close racing and the disturbance of aero they should just remove the wings all together and let the cars run purely on ground-effect.

I don't get this overfixation on overtakes in general, if anything DRS just made the sport duller.

Imo what would help the sport most is just ironing out some of the over-regulation that the formula seems to suffer from. Allow for more freedom in wing/body-work design, bigger better tires, allow for more ground effect and mainly allow for more engine designs/configurations a la WEC.

i have a long-winded response but i agree with you so i'll skip it

it would be nice if the rulemakers revisited some freedoms that were banned on cost grounds (nm saving the whales), as costs and benefits have undoubtedly changed over time. rather than forcing everyone to spend all their budget on mgu-h garbage

Welcome back to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games here in Manama, Bahrain.

We are now most of the way through the Athletes Parade having just seen the Virgin Island team squeak their way into the stadium.

That can only mean one thing, the final team to enter, the hosts, TEAM /WAG/.

Flag bearer for Team /WAG/ could only be one person, Dasha Kaputstina, hoping to secure gold in the drifting competition.

Looking strong for Team /WAG/ is of course Emilia Pikkarainen in the semen swimming event that was added at the previous Olympics in Tokyo, re-branded from the Bukkake Blitz. New rules added means she sadly won't be able to contest in the equestrian events.

I can't actually see her right now but Hanna Prater should be a good shout for the Hide & Seek competition.

Brittny Ward should excel in the rhythmic Sybian riding although she has been plagued by injury so Team /WAG/ did take the controversial decision to ask Jessica Michibata to enter as a back up.

And with that here comes the Olympic flame to set a light to the 208 protesters that represent each of the nations here at the games.

There was speculation about who it would be but you can lay that to rest as Mark Webber enters in his famous flaming Red Bull.

This car has travelled to 20 or so locations all over the world to spread the message of the Olympics. That it is the taking part that matters, even if you are dominated by a German.

He powerslides his way straight into the Olympic cauldron, the protesters are up in flames and the game have well and truly begun.

This has been an amazing opening ceremony in the Memorial Potato Stadium. If you wish to see any highlights of today's events please the click the links below

use the nov 20 2016 version of forked livestreamer.py from https://github.com/intact/livestreamer/raw/42cc7b1e10a30593f7160d52ea5f1c4208951545/src/livestreamer/plugins/livestream.py

picking the hls options gave me streams with black video but that might be my mpc-hc, dunno. leaving it at (best) gave an invalid player url error because it starts "http:////". to fix this, edit livestream.py and take out the extra //

>Analysis: Has Pirelli got it right with 2017 F1 tyres?

so Symonds thinks Pirelli and the FIA are overestimating how fast the cars will be. ergo Pirelli might overshoot and make tires meant for higher downforce cars and the teams have nogrip.jpg. but what if the tires are so sensitive that we have a 2013 situation where the Mercedes cooks its tires and it becomes a tirebowl? either way 2017 has potential imo.
