With Yamaha and Brian Hart.

http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns01283.html

>SEPTEMBER 29, 1997

>Tom and Yamaha

>WITH Benetton having finally admitted that it has a deal to run Mecachrome V10 engines in 1998, Tom Walkinshaw is almost certain to put the finishing touches to another deal with Yamaha - despite a string of engine problems this season. There will, however, be big changes in the relationship with the current V10 engine being dumped and the 1998 Yamaha engine being a badged version of Brian Hart's V10 design.

>Brian has missed three of the last four Grands Prix and is believed to be working flat out to ensure that the engine will be ready to begin testing as soon as possible. He is understood to be working closely with TWR engine wizard Geoff Goddard - the two enjoying a good relationship having been colleagues at Cosworth for many years. Goddard is expected to look after the development of the engines with finance and technical assistance from Yamaha.

>The deal - if it is signed - will mean the end of the Yamaha collaboration between John Judd's Engine Developments company in Rugby and Yamaha. If everything goes to plan the deal will be announced at the Japanese GP in Suzuka.

>It is logical to suggest that Hart's deal with TWR and Yamaha will be a long-term arrangement. Brian is a sprightly 61 and seems to want to go on building F1 engines for as long as he can but it is logical to suggest that Walkinshaw may be offering him a deal in which the Hart company is eventually absorbed into the TWR automotive empire.

>Tom Walkinshaw makes no secret of the fact that he would one day like to build his own F1 engines and taking over Hart when Brian retires would be a good way to achieve that aim.

the arrows engine (brian hart) was relatively competitive. In its earlier configuration (as used by jordan in 1994) they managed a pole position with Rubens Barrichello. The Yamaha engines (the cosworth derived one, the indigenous v12, and the john judd derived v10) all seemed victims of under development. The 5 valve heads yamaha made had been competitive power producers in japanese series.

Here's the thing, if you watch Nicholas Latifi, he was racing for 5th place and didn't want to lose his position. He can't block the other driver or push him off as per rules, so he ends up crashing into Merhi. He had to pay attention to Tom Dillmann as well who he was racing. This just shows Merhi was being a fucking moron and he doesn't deserve the Manor seat.

Especially since he pulled that "dindunuffin" shit later.

http://en.f1i.com/news/17865-aston-martin-linked-with-f1-return-with-red-bull.html

>Aston Martin has been linked with a return to F1 via a partnership with Red Bull which could facilitate a deal to use Mercedes power units.

>According to a report by Autocar, Aston Martin bosses are in talks with Red Bull about a possible deal as the four-time constructors' champion considers its future with current power unit supplier Renault. Relations between Red Bull and Renault have been strained on numerous occasions this year due to a lack of competitiveness from the power unit compared to Mercedes and Ferrari.

>With Renault considering its options, the report suggests Aston Martin branding would appear on the Red Bull in a partnership similar to the one currently in place with Infiniti - the upmarket brand of Renault's sister marque, Nissan.

>Mercedes currently holds a 5% stake in Aston Martin and the potential partnership would see Red Bull receiving the Mercedes power unit, an attractive proposition for the team as Renault pushes ahead with plans to take over Lotus.

>Aston Martin previously entered F1 for a handful of races in 1959 and 1960, but after limited success quit to focus on its sportscar projects.

Joe Saward's take is here https://joesaward.wordpress.com/2015/07/04/aston-martins-in-formula-1/

If they do this, Red Bull has to do everything in their power to recruit more people for their technical and design departments to bolster the ranks. They should also convince Newey to back to designing as technical director as well.

it was never going to happen anyway. Merc would be incredibly stupid to give RedBull any kind of competitive engine. They can easily make up for the non-factory deficit with their chassis.

RB have one more year with Renault and unless Ilmor can fix them by next year, this partnership is dissolving.

They must have some sort of backup plan if Renault does fail. Toyota maybe? They are being very secretive about their new engine they are developing for their LMP1 car. The F1 version can very easily be a derivative of it to help save on costs. Ferrari can also be a short stop gap solution until they can find a factory partner.

And is single seater and has open wheels.

Really those are the first two definitions I would put down as they are the definition of a formula car.

Breaking either makes you a hybrid formula/sportscar.

Breaking both makes you 100% a sports car, no questions asked.

And before you mention the W196. It should never have been allowed and Mercedes should have those victories removed.

>1.5 liter limit is how it has always been

That is a stupid reason to do anything and with that reasoning we should still be using a 1950's formula.

>If we didn't have a minimum weight, this would not be as much of a problem.

>Now, with teams unable to make the car lighter (and in most cases ballasting the car) there is a huge benefit in having a lighter driver as you can choose where you want the weight.

This is a logical error, actually the opposite is true. The more ballast a constructor is already forced to use the less the value of the each additional kilo of ballast becomes.

Let's say they were forced to make the cars weigh a ton, meaning they would be able to use several hundred kilos of ballast. They would then be able to make the cars so perfectly balanced that gaining a few % more ballast by choosing a lighter driver would be of absolutely no consequence. In other words the heavier the cars are forced to use be less reason they will have to sacrifice a skilled driver to gain ballast for balancing.

This is not saying a minimum car weight is good or bad, just that your logic is entirely broken.

>>16519

>A piston on a common crank with another piston is not another engine

But you see, that is entirely arbitrary. If I take two lawnmower engines and connect a chain from each to the rear wheels of my cart do they magically become a single engine? If I connect both chains to a single axle so they run in sync do they now magically become a single engine? If I connect their cranks do each other and run just a single chain do they now magically become a single engine?

>a heat engine that converts heat energy

>That is a stupid reason to do anything and with that reasoning we should still be using a 1950's formula.

Formula 1 is that 3 liter NA/1.5 liter forced induction formula, that is what this formula is. Just as formula 5000 was 5 liter stockblocks. It's in the fucking name.

>In other words the heavier the cars are forced to use be less reason they will have to sacrifice a skilled driver to gain ballast for balancing.

Except the exact opposite is true historically. At the same time Colin Chapman was trying to get the FIA approve doped cardboard as a firewall (as an extreme weight saving measure because there was no minimum weight until 1970), he had Graham hill who by all estimates was in the 6 foot tall range driving for him. Innes Ireland who won lotus' first race was by no means a short, wiry man. Jack Brabham was a big guy.

When there was a minimum weight, most of the time, it was a theoretical safety measure that would prevent shortcuts in construction (this is now irrelevant as crash testing is mandated). The minimum weight for a good amount of F1 history was not reachable by all or most of the teams. Drivers like Alan Jones and Denny Hulme drove in this era. Ronnie Peterson was 5 foot ten inches and lotus engineered his car to accommodate him as Mario Andretti was a good deal shorter. Yet you don't see a consistent qualifying or race pace deficit on from Peterson to Andretti. Jody Scheckter (5 foot 10.5 inches) was substantially taller than Patrick Depailler, yet Jody Scheckter strongly outpaced him.

Moreover if the FIA cared about fuel economy, they would do away with minimum weight.

Champcars (which were made substantially heavier as they had to handle the stresses of driving on ovals and which were often made from aluminum not carbon fiber) weighed 789 kg. F1 cars of today weigh 702 kg, which is enormous for cars that are carbon fiber and ostensibly at the top level of motorsport.

If the cars were free to weigh less, the value of a lighter driver would be less (asPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

m8 it is sorted by most recent down.

The link you want is this:

http://www.motorsport.com/lemans/photos/main-gallery/?t=grid%20girl

The only ones which are 2015 are the third and fourth pic.

The 3rd one is a G-Drive grid girl and the 4th are Strakka racing grid girls.

Both of them will have been employed privately by the team and neither the FIA, ACO or WEC could stop that (or at least it would be hilarious to see them try)

The grid girls (and boys) who did the sign holding and flag waving were paid for by Motul who have been there for quite a while and are the official lubricant partner (I'm not joking) of the ACO and Le Mans. They signed a new partnership with the ACO in April.

https://www.motul.com/gb/en/news/motul-strengthens-its-partnership-with-the-aco-by-becoming-the-official-lubricant-partner-for-the-driving-school-the-fete-de-l-aco-and-the-karting-center

They also do the driver parade through the town and made the decision to have 12 grid boys alongside the 49 grid girls.

This is what happens when a race has actual sponsors & partners. They pay for the grid girls because they want the advertising space.

All the other races have no sponsors or partners so nobody foots the bill for them. The WEC just straight up lied and said it was to do with being progressive.

If Audi turned up with their own grid girlsPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

Autogate crosspost thread.

tl;dr Project cars sucks balls like every other game made by slightly mad studios. People who (much like 10 bux) bought it during development defended it and people who criticize the game are getting banned from backer forums. Jack Baruth of TheTruthAboutCars, who is aware of the media narrative about GG calls them out and points out how this shitty excuse for auto journalism is ruining Auto enthusiasm.

This is completely 100% related to F1, this is why people defend what F1 has become to the death. They are emotionally invested in the disaster that is the current formula. The media is complicit.

I'd argue that grid girls are a very big part of the pageantry of a grand prix and it would be just as silly to not have a podium ceremony to not have grid girls.

I've never given a single fuck about grid girls and wouldn't mourn a bit if they were got rid of. If I want to see pretty girls I go to the internet.

I neither think there is anything wrong or degrading about them. If some girls are ready to take such a job they are free to do so. I get the argument about it being patriarchal or whatever, and in essence it is I guess if it truly is that they are there just to be pretty and please some old men, but they are not forced to be there, if a woman chooses to do that what can you do? If it truly was such an issue for women's rights you would expect no self-respecting woman to take a job like that, but obviously there are lots of willing people doing it.

Tbh if I was being paid about just being myself and standing around a Grand Prix I would do it too.

What if they got rid of the champagne, or the wreaths, or the trophies, or the podium itself? It wouldn't be a grand prix. No one of these elements so greatly changes the sport, but they're each big chunks of the experience and glitz.

IMO they are not comparable at all. Podium ceremony is important because you see the drivers celebrating, the drivers pouring champagne etc. The girls are just standing on the background.

Also I guess this is part of the issue, that you are comparing them to inanimate objects, which is pretty much objectifying women.

>or the wreaths

They got rid of wreaths after the 1986 Italian GP.

It was understandable though as it covered up the sponsors who paid for that advertising.

And that is how it is like with all of those things.

Why have they not got rid of champagne? Because Mumm pays a lot of money.

Why have they not got rid of the trophies? Because race sponsors pay a lot of money for those designs..

Why have they not got rid of the podium? Because the sponsors on the podium and the suits pay a lot of money.

Why have they not got rid of grid girls? Because grid girl sponsors pay a lot of money.

There is no idea of trying to keep the "glamour and glitz" of an F1 race. It is down to cold hard fucking cash,

Money makes F1 go round and as long as there are sponsors there will be grid girls.
