FIA Regulation Changes Autophile ## Board Volunteer 05/15/15 (Fri) 22:31:40 578a79 No. 8623

What do you guys think? Seems like a mixed bag to me. Refueling and faster cars seems pretty cool, but that doesn't mean per se they'll open up the formula anymore. Good thing to see the sport going in the right direction…(?)

>Higher revving engines and increased noise
Sounds like the FIA giving into the people who want MUH EAR SPLITTING VEE EIGHTS.
On the other hand this will definitely spice up the sport, and the fags bitching about fuel flow can finally shut up about the cars getting slower and slower and removing any excitement from the sport.
Just hope they realize that by bringing back refueling that drivers aren't gonna be winning solely through on track performance, and instead races are gonna have pit stops and refueling dictating the race a lot more than they used to.

Really don't want to see refuelling back. I want on track action.
Really wish they would let Michellin back in though, or at least let Pirelli make a tire that will last instead of the degrading bullshit they have to do right now. Drivers shouldn't be limited in how much they can push by tires.

You will see on track action.
Right after they refuel :^)

>Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said: "We discussed many topics. Refuelling was banned because of cost and because the pit stops were taking too long. But we want to re-explore it and see if we can make pit stops for fuel and tyres happen in the same time it takes to change the tyres now - two to three seconds. "We have agreed to explore this avenue and the cost involved because it could be spectacular. If it's too expensive, we won't do it."
>The FIA said a "maximum race fuel allowance" would be retained. Wolff said there had been no discussion of increasing the current allowance of 100kg. He and the FIA said the maximum fuel-flow rate of 100kg per hour would stay.
>There has been mounting criticism of the spectacle provided by F1 in recent years and the developments are a clear attempt to address that.
>Drivers have been critical that the cars are too slow - in some races they are up to 10 seconds slower than in 2004.
The FIA said this would be addressed for 2017 by "aerodynamic rules evolution, wider tyres and a reduction in car weight".
>Wolff said: "We have agreed to increase the width of the cars and tyres, and have larger front and rear wings. We want to ban the driver-aid aspect of starts, so no pre-calibrated starts and have the drivers start using hand clutches.
>"For now, it will be an evolution of the current cars. But there is an appetite for more spectacular aero kit. We want to follow this up but at the moment we will go for evolution and that gives us six months to agree on a more spectacular design."

Why keep the fuel flow regs if you want to bring back refueling? There's already an inherent disadvantage to bringing a thirsty engine to the track.

It's probably going to fail.
Fucks Haas up pretty badly having to redesign the chassis after 1 year.
I'm left wondering why none of this was brought up back in 2009/10 when the 2014 rules were being discussed and started to get written up?
They all knew what the current ruleset was going to bring and yet they didn't bring any of this other stuff forward.
I just want a consistent ruleset that doesn't change ever other fucking second.

they redesign every year anyway, plus Haas is farming out everything
if customer cars come on board, they will just buy ferraris

I can't see Ferrari being the customer car types. Mid-field might be able to make some use out of customer cars for some extra cash but the top teams would like to ensure they won't have any competition from some upstarts.

Ferrari used to do customer cars for NART and at this point im sure they'd gleefully supply the whole field to increase the chance that the winning car is a Ferrari.

This is at best going to shuffle shit up for a few years until people figure it out and all the cars are the same or one car dominates. ==That's what happens with limited rule sets== . They need to go back to the 3 liter formula, it is the only rule set that ever worked for an extended period of time because it allowed asymmetry of performance. If there is a minimum weight and specified dimensions of the car, there is no advantage to any engine other than the most powerful one. Historically without a minimum weight and engines of different configurations there were aero, packaging and weight advantages to using a less powerful engine. This is how things were kept balanced between the matra, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, cosworth, tecno, and repco engines.

Why the fuck is there a development freeze on engines anyway? Teams are still fucking away with them on the dyno and all the cost is in that r&d, deployment cost is trivial by comparison.
Mosley/todt are re-todt-ed.

We screamer pipes now
>The plan is to make it mandatory for there to be two tailpipe exits rather than the current single one.
>It is believed that this solution will help deliver a better sound for the engine as it will prevent the muffling effect caused by the current turbo wastegate and single exhaust exit.
>Sources suggest that one exhaust will be used for the wastegate, while the other will deliver sound straight from the engine to help deliver more sound.

I'm just so flummoxed by the whole thing. If you want good racing, loud cars, and fair rule sets, they need to de regulate and go back to 3 liters of any configuration. Why the fuck is that so hard for them to process?
