AfD Member Deaths

Six members of Germany's far-right AfD party have died in the weeks leading up to the local elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, including four candidates and two reserve list members.

Police have found no evidence of foul play, and the deaths are attributed to natural causes or private reasons, with some causes not being publicly disclosed out of respect for the families.

The state's Interior Ministry has confirmed that candidates from other parties, such as the Greens and Social Democrats, have also died, indicating the deaths are not exclusive to the AfD.

Four AfD candidates died in August 2025: Wolfgang Seitz (Rheinberg), Wolfgang Klinger (Schwerte), Stefan Berendes (Bad Lippspringe), and Ralph Lange (Blomberg).

Two additional AfD members from the reserve list died during the election campaign: René Herford, who died from kidney failure following liver disease, and Patrick Tietze, who died by suicide.

The deaths have prompted speculation and conspiracy theories online, but authorities have ruled out external involvement.

The AfD leadership, including co-leader Alice Weidel, has acknowledged the statistical improbability of the cluster, with Weidel reposting a comment from a retired economist highlighting the anomaly.

Digital gold evolution: WGC launches new settlement model for bullion market

(Kitco News) - The gold market is proving to be an untapped resource in the evolving digital landscape, and the World Gold Council (WGC) is hoping to bridge the gap between physical bullion and digital assets.

On Wednesday, the WGC announced the launch of its newest initiative—Wholesale Digital Gold—a transformative concept designed to enhance how gold is owned, traded, and utilized.

The initiative is based on a recently published white paper examining ways to improve the settlement process in the over-the-counter market. The paper notes that the physical gold market is currently settled through two key structures: allocated gold and unallocated gold.

Allocated gold allows for the transfer of direct ownership and title to specific gold bars. This settlement process provides holders with the certainty of gold ownership and insulates them from the credit risk of custodian banks.

Meanwhile, unallocated gold refers to a holder’s credit claim against an institution, where the unallocated account is maintained for a specific quantity of gold. As the term suggests, unallocated gold means no specific bullion is set aside for the holder; instead, the holder has a contractual right to the gold.

“Unallocated gold has traditionally provided holders with greater liquidity through deeper markets, and quick and simple settlement mechanics,” the WGC analysts said in the report. “However, the ‘quid pro quo’ for unallocated gold is that it requires holders to take the credit risk against the institution where their unallocated account is held.”

The WGC now proposes to create a third settlement process, underpinned by the development of a new digital form of Pooled Gold Interests (PGIs).

In this new venture, the WGC’s Wholesale Digital Gold would give investors access to PGIs, providing physical ownership similar to allocated gold, but with added benefits such as fractional ownership and the ability to use bullion as collateral.

“Participants in the Wholesale Digital Gold ecosystem would co-own the underlying pooled gold and issue digital fractional ownership interests in the gold, maintaining transparency and trust,” the WGC said in a press release.

“As the world’s leading gold trading hub, with the Loco London market clearing an average of 20 million ounces daily, the UK is well positioned to lead the way in improving the way gold is traded and cleared to the benefit of all market participants,” said Mike Oswin, Global Head of Market Structure and Innovation at the WGC, in a prepared statement. “Introducing a robust legal structure and innovative technology for gold ownership and settlement will only reinforce London’s role in the global gold market.”

The WGC has partnered with Linklaters to develop a new legal framework for PGIs. This framework underpins the issuance and transfer of interests in a pool of vaulted gold bars, ensuring beneficial ownership of the physical gold held in custody.

“This structure provides legal certainty and supports operational flexibility essential for innovation in precious metals trading,” said Richard Hay, Partner and UK Head of Fintech at Linklaters. “By enabling secure, transparent, and efficient digital ownership of fractional interest in gold, we are helping to unlock new opportunities for market participants and reinforcing London’s leadership as the world’s preeminent gold trading hub.”

Gold has been relatively slow to embrace the evolving digital marketplace; however, interest in digitizing physical assets is starting to attract significant attention.

The WGC is not the only organization racing to build a digital gold platform. In July, BioSig Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: BSGM) announced that it had raised up to $1.1 billion in financing to build a tokenized digital gold asset traded on the blockchain.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Davies: Hello. My name is Chauntae Davies, and I'm here before you today as a survivor, a survivor of decades of pain, trauma, and betrayal at the hands of gland Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein and the people who enabled them and a government that for far too long refused to help. In 2002, I was living in California, a young woman with high aspirations of becoming an actress. I was already beginning to make a name for myself in the industry. A person I trusted, someone I thought was a friend, invited me to meet a powerful woman who could help advance my career. That woman happened to be Ghislain Maxwell.

I was asked to give her a massage, though I had almost no experience, and when I did, she praised me and promised introductions to someone enormously powerful, someone who could change the course of my life, and that man was Jeffrey Epstein. At first, I was an excited young woman on top of the world. Epstein flew me to his private island, he listened to my dreams, promised to help, but his promises came with a catch. The abuse began. He told me to keep it secret. He manipulated me with quid pro quo I did not consent to, but I felt I had no one to turn to. He was too powerful.

I was just one of the many young women trapped in his orbit. I was even taken on a trip to Africa with former President Bill Clinton and other notable figures. In those moments, I realized how powerless I was. If I spoke out, who would believe me, who would protect me? Epstein, himself, was the most powerful leader of our country— Epstein surrounded himself, I'm sorry, with the most powerful leaders of our country and the world. He abused not only me, but countless others, and everyone seemed to look away. The truth is, Epstein had a free pass. He bragged about his powerful friends, including our current president, Donald Trump. It was his biggest brag, actually, and what I endured will haunt me forever.

I live every day with PTSD. I live as a mother trying to raise my child while distrusting a world that has betrayed me. This kind of trauma never leaves you. It breaks families apart. It shapes the way we see everyone around us. But one thing is certain: unless we learn from this history, monsters like Epstein will rise again. There are files, government files that hold the truth about Epstein, who he knew, who owed him, who protected him, and why he was allowed to operate for so long without consequence. Why was Maxwell the only one held accountable when so many others played a role? Why does the government hide this information from the public?

This secrecy is not protection, it's complicity. And as long as the truth is buried, justice will remain out of reach. That is why this bill matters, passing it will ensure that the suffering of survivors is not in vain. Passing it will bring accountability, transparency, and prevention. It will help protect the next generation of predators who seek to place themselves above the law through wealth, influence, and connections. This is not just my story. It is about every survivor who carries invisible scars. It's about the weight we live with daily. It is about the families broken and the future stolen. So I ask you, President Trump and members of Congress, why do we continue to cover up sexual abuse and assault? Who are we covering for? Let the public know the truth. We cannot heal without justice. We cannot protect the future if we refuse to confront the past. Thank you.

Trump Fires ANOTHER San Francisco Immigration Judge Who Granted Asylum in Nearly Every Case

The Trump administration fired yet another San Francisco immigration judge, the sixth judge from the city’s immigration court who’s been terminated since he took office in January.

According to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the firing, San Francisco immigration Judge Shira Levine was let go on Wednesday, less than two weeks after immigration Judge Chloe Dillon was terminated in August.

“Another experienced judge has been fired without cause,” said a former colleague with firsthand knowledge of the order. “The administration is systematically dismantling the immigration courts and any semblance of due process in immigration proceedings.”

Wednesday’s firing means nearly 30% of San Francisco’s immigration judges have been let go since Trump took office.

While most of the initial firings targeted judges who were within the two-year probationary period of their employment, the last three judges to be let go in San Francisco Judge Ila Deiss, Judge Chloe Dillon, and Judge Shira Levine were past that. Levine was appointed by the Biden administration in 2021.

Two immigration judges assigned to the Concord immigration court have also been terminated this year.

The wave of firings has left many scratching their heads, as the country is in the midst of a record immigration course case backlog. It's now common for immigrants to wait three or four years between hearings.

While the administration fires immigration judges across the country, it's simultaneously easing qualifications for the hiring of new temporary judges, causing concern the Department of Justice is attempting to stack the court with judges who might be more ideologically aligned with the president's immigration agenda.

This week, the administration also just authorized up to 600 military lawyers to serve as temporary immigration judges, according to a memo reviewed by the Associated Press.

Paramount on Verge of Acquiring Bari Weiss' The Free Press and 'Tossing Her the Keys to CBS News'

Paramount under nepo baby David Ellison is on the verge of acquiring Bari Weiss's pro-Israel propaganda outlet "The Free Press" for around $100-200m and "tossing her the keys to CBS News," according to Puck News.

From Dylan Byers in Puck News, "The Bari Market":

[David Ellison's] offer for The Free Press is expected to be well above the site’s most recent $100 million valuation, but well below the $200 million figure that was recently floated in the Financial Times. (That was an absurd ask; The Free Press does $15 million in annual subscription revenue, and Bari’s politically charged content makes it hard to scale the advertising business. Plus, there’s no tech stack—it’s all on Substack.) Either way, it will land Weiss a king’s ransom just a little over five years after her dramatic departure from the Times. [...]

As part of the deal, I am told David plans to give Bari a role at CBS News that would, among other things, task his fellow Millennial with guiding the editorial direction of the division.

Shari Redstone, the daughter of the late Sumner Redstone (né Rothstein), reportedly decided to sell Paramount after October 7th because she "wanted to support Israel" and "address issues around antisemitism" and was upset with CBS News airing occasional segments highlighting just a fraction of the many atrocities Israel is committing in Gaza.

From The New York Post, "Shari Redstone hoped Trump’s ‘60 Minutes’ suit would root out anti-Israel bias at CBS News — and she sold Paramount partly over Oct. 7":

Shari Redstone said she believed President Trump’s lawsuit against CBS News could help address the network’s anti-Israel bias — even as she revealed that it was the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks that finally moved her to sell CBS parent Paramount.

“We needed more balance,” Redstone, former chair of Paramount Global, told the New York Times in interviews conducted after Paramount’s $8 billion sale to Skydance Media closed earlier this month.

[...] What pushed her to finally agree to sell the family business was the Oct. 7 massacre of an estimated 1,200 Israelis.

“Once that happened, I wanted out,” she told the Times.

“I wanted to support Israel, and address issues around antisemitism and racism.”

[...] In her wide-ranging interview with the Times that was published on Tuesday, the 71-year-old media heiress, whose ex-husband and son are both rabbis, had grown increasingly frustrated with CBS News coverage that she viewed as hostile to Israel.

All that stuff these same people told us about the need for "diversity" and "representation" was thrown out the window after October 7th.

Now every TV media outlet, large and small, is united in spewing 24/7 hasbara.

FOI amendment bill. A transparency counter-revolution.

The biggest ever assault on government transparency has been launched by Labor’s tabling of the FOI Amendment Bill 2025.

Freedom of Information (FOI) is the only way you can directly inquire into the details of what your government is doing on your behalf. It’s a right that was bestowed upon you by the Parliament in 1982. In a 2008 High Court decision, Justice Kirby stated:

“[The FOI Act] assigns very high importance to a public interest in greater openness and transparency in public administration. Given the historical background, the attitudinal shift that FOI legislation demanded of Ministers, departments, agencies and the public service is nothing short of revolutionary.”

The FOI bill tabled in the parliament today is nothing short of an Albanese counter-revolution,

it strips away citizens’ rights to access important information.

As frequently pointed out on these pages, the current FOI regime is not working well. The proposed amendments will not help.

All Important Information to be exempt

The current FOI Act limits Cabinet exemptions to material that would disclose a difference in opinion between ministers; as declared in the High Court case of Commonwealth v Northern Land Council in 1993, Cabinet confidentiality protects collective responsibility and cabinet solidarity.

It should never be a secret that the Cabinet is dealing with a particular issue, but only the views that each minister has about the policy, so that we have confidence in the government.

Right now, you can request and gain access to ministerial briefs about important topics – the briefs reveal their department’s views, not the ministers.

The changes in the new Bill alter this situation dramatically, not seeking to protect collective responsibility and cabinet solidarity, but rather any issue that the Cabinet is dealing with. And, of course, the Cabinet only deals with the big issues, so the proposed law will stop access to any document that deals with big issues.

The Bill waters down the Cabinet exemption from a document that has a dominant purpose of submission to Cabinet to a document that just has a substantial purpose of submission to Cabinet. Words count when fronting a tribunal or court.

The Bill also adds further exemptions to words spoken by a minister in cabinet to words, adding the issue discussed as well.

If the law passes, you’ll be able to get access to information about a fence being built around a federal building (assuming the Cabinet didn’t consider that), but not information related to a national highway being built to access it.

SHOCK VIDEO: Knife-Yielding Migrant Shot Dead by French Police After Stabbing Four People in Marseille

by Paul Serran Sep. 2, 2025

The epidemic of migrant attacks on European citizens shows no sign of slowing down.

Today (2), the tragic attack took place in the southern French town of Marseille, where police had to shoot a migrant man dead after he stabbed multiple people.

Authorities say four people were injured, one critically, by the attacker, who reportedly shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the stabbing rampage – and was said to be of Tunisian descent.

A Marseille prosecutor said an investigation is ongoing, and that ‘the motive of the assailant is not yet known’.

Euronews reported:

“Local prosecutor Nicolas Bessone said that the attack was carried out on Tuesday afternoon by a Tunisian national with legal residency status.

Bessone said that the suspect had been expelled from his hotel for not paying his rent. He returned armed with two knives and a baton, first attacking someone in the room he had previously occupied.

He then attacked the hotel manager before turning on the manager’s son and stabbing him in the back.”

Express reported:

“Brave customers chased the man away from an eatery in Cours Belsunce before a police patrol in the area intervened. After ordering the suspect to drop his weapons, which he refused to do, officers neutralized the suspect, Mr. Bessone said.

One victim who was stabbed at the hotel was in a critical condition, according to Mr. Bessone. He said the other two were also seriously wounded. An investigation has been launched.

France’s Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau, was due to visit the scene of the attack. Marseille’s Mayor Benoît Payan praised police for their swift response.”

Former prime minister John Howard accuses Albanese government of betraying international law over Palestine recognition

Former prime minister John Howard has accused the Albanese government of “betraying” international law by recognising Palestine as a sovereign state.

Former prime minister John Howard has accused the Albanese government of “betraying” international law by recognising Palestine as a sovereign state.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently announced his government would recognise Palestinian statehood despite the Gaza Strip being run by terrorist organisation Hamas.

In a joint statement with former foreign minister Alexander Downer, Mr Howard said the government’s decision was being used for “political advantage”.

“As long-standing friends and supporters of Israel… we are appalled by the Albanese government’s recent behaviour,” the statement read.

“Both the Prime Minister and the Minister for Home Affairs, Tony Burke, have undermined a relationship of enduring trust between Australia and Israel.

“In doing so, they have failed to match the leadership and strength once shown by Labor figures such as Bob Hawke and Dr H V Evatt.

“No regard has been paid to the fact that Israel remains the only genuine democracy in the Middle East.

“That achievement has been cast aside in pursuit of short-term domestic political advantage.”

Mr Howard and Mr Downer argued that recognition of Palestine was also a legal matter which violated the Montevideo Convention of 1933.

The convention sets out the requirements for statehood, including defined territory, permanent population, effective government, and ability to conduct international diplomacy.

“Palestine, as it stands today, does not meet these standards,” Mr Howard and Mr Downer said.

“It has no agreed borders. The West Bank remains under a patchwork of Israeli and Palestinian administrative arrangements.

“Gaza is controlled by Hamas, a group designated as a terrorist organisation by Australia, the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom.

“There is no unified, effective government. The Palestinian Authority governs nominally in parts of the West Bank, but not in Gaza, and it lacks authority even within its own territory.

“A ‘state’ cannot exist in law when its supposed government does not control its territory or speak coherently for its people.

The former leaders also warned that unilateral recognition undermined agreements designed to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including the Oslo Accords.

The Oslo Accords require direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians on key issues such as borders, settlements, and refugees.

“Recognition of a Palestinian state outside this framework discards those commitments,” the leaders said.

“It offers the prize of statehood without requiring the compromises, governance capacity, and accountability that a durable peace demands.”

Mr Howard and Mr Downer stressed that Australia has historically played a principled role in the region.

“Some argue that recognition would ‘advance’ the peace process. In reality, it entrenches division,” the statement said.

“It teaches the Palestinian leadership that peace is unnecessary for statehood, and it signals to Israel that international institutions cannot be relied upon to uphold agreements or protect its security concerns.”

“Far from building confidence between the parties, premature recognition would only deepen mistrust.”

Defense Dept. to send up to 600 military attorneys to serve as temporary immigration judges

By Katrina Kaufman

September 3, 2025 /MSM are freaked, How Dare you

Washington — The Defense Department is considering authorizing up to 600 military attorneysto serve as temporary immigration judges, a defense official confirmed.

Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement that at the request of the Justice Department, the Defense Department is in the process of "identifying qualified Judge Advocates and civilian attorneys for details to serve as Temporary Immigration Judges."

Parnell said the Defense Department attorneys would help with the backlog of cases"by presiding over immigration hearings." The Associated Press first reported the Pentagon's plans.

The immigration courts are struggling witha backlog of more than 3.4 million cases. But the plan to turn possibly hundreds of military lawyers into immigration judges comes after the Trump administration has fired more than two dozen immigration judges nationwide so far this year. Unlike federal district court judges, immigration judges work for the Justice Department.

Judge Advocate General Corps officers are tasked with providing legal support to service membersand their families or advising commanders on the legalities of warfare. The defense lawyers would likely need to undergo some training in immigration law, procedure and policy.

The Trump administration loosened the job requirements for temporary immigration judges last month, allowing a wider group of government lawyers to handle cases in immigration court. Its new rule, published in the Federal Register in late August, states that the Justice Department "no longer believes the restriction of [temporary immigration judges] to current Department employees with a threshold level of immigration law experience serves [the Executive Office for Immigration Review's] interests."

Previously, only Justice Department lawyers with a decade of immigration law experience or former immigration judges could fill those roles.

The American Immigration Lawyers Association criticized the plan in a statement after the new rule was published.==(owned a paid by cartels, too bad!)

"While DoD attorneys may be well suited to handle military matters, immigration law is entirely different and exceptionally complex," AILA said. "It makes as much sense as having a cardiologist do a hip replacement." (Oh sure a lawyer is a lawyer are honest, you are lawfare!)

"The work of immigration judges has been described as life and death decisions in traffic court conditions," the statement continued. "Expecting fair decisions from judges unfamiliar with the law is absurd. This reckless move guts due process and further undermines the integrity of our immigration court system."

The group called on Congress to use its oversight powers "to defend the rule of law and protect the independence of the immigration judiciary."

In Florida, Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has already proposed loaning National Guard troops to the federal government for use as immigration judges. He said in May that his office had submitted a proposal to the Trump administration that would activate the nine Florida National Guard members who are Judge Advocate General Corps officers to serve as immigration judges, which legal experts told CBS News is unprecedented.

Typically, when National Guard troops help after a hurricane or secure a protest site, they remain under the command of their state governor, under Title 32 of the U.S. Code.Under DeSantis' plan, the state would relinquish control of these officers to Washington. Title 10 would snap into place, reassigning the JAG officers under the command of the president and defense secretary. This grants them eligibility to serve as federal immigration judges, appointed by the U.S. attorney general.

The Justice Department will pick up the tab for the operation if adopted. It plans to train the officers over six weeks — a crash course in immigration law, procedure and policy. Each officer would need to pass a written exam before donning the judge's robe.

Abbe Lowell: The veteran defense lawyer squaring off against Trump in Federal Reserve fight

PUBLISHED TUE, SEP 2 20254:57

KEY POINTS

• Abbe Lowell is defending Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook following President Donald Trump’s unprecedented move to fire her from her role over allegations of mortgage fraud.

• Lowell, a longtime defense lawyer in Washington, has represented a number of high-profile clients, both Republicans and Democrats, throughout his career. But lately his most high-profile clients have been targets of the Trump administration.

• Lowell often takes on the role of attack dog while he defends his clients, unafraid to criticize Trump administration officials.

He’s fucked and they know it

When President Donald Trump abruptly announced last week that he had fired Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, a legendary Washington lawyer quickly stepped into the arena.

Abbe Lowell has represented New York Attorney General Letitia James, Hunter Biden, Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump and several other high-profile political clients, both Republicans and Democrats.

Now he is at the center of Trump’s bid to expand his authority over federal regulators.

Before Trump announced he was firing Cook on Aug. 25, no American president had ever tried to unilaterally remove a Fed governor, pushing Cook and the central bank into uncharted legal territory.

But for Lowell, a fixture in Washington legal circles for decades, fighting a presidential administration’s attempt to exert control over federal regulators is nothing new.

“I have basically challenged the overreach of federal agencies in every administration since Ronald Reagan’s,” Lowell said on MSNBC last month.

“Didn’t matter whether it’s a Democratic or Republican administration. If the government overreaches, then [the] lawyer’s job is to put the government in the right place,” he added.

Cook and James are some of the newer names of the lengthy client list Lowell has built over the years.

James won a civil fraud case against Trump and his family business in 2023. The penalty in the case — roughly $500 million — was thrown out last month.

That same month, the Trump Justice Department launched a federal grand jury investigation into James over alleged “mortgage fraud.”

The allegations against James were publicly leveled earlier this year by the same Trump ally, Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Pulte, who made the claims against Cook.

Lowell, not afraid to serve as the attack dog for his clients, has called the investigation into James “the most blatant and desperate example of this administration carrying out the president’s political retribution campaign.”

Lowell, 73, has also represented several other high-profile clients during his career, including Kushner and Ivanka Trump, the president’s son-in-law and eldest daughter.

Kushner and Ivanka Trump retained Lowell during Trump’s first term to represent them in a special counsel probe of Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

Former Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., hired Lowell’s then-firm to defend him in a 2017 federal bribery case that ended in a mistrial. Menendez was convicted in a separate federal bribery case last year.

Lowell also defended Hunter Biden, who was convicted last year on federal gun related charges, before being pardoned by his father, former President Joe Biden.

Lowell also served as minority counsel to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee during impeachment proceedings against former President Bill Clinton in 1998.

But since Trump’s return, the bulk of Lowell’s clients have been individuals targeted by the Trump administration, giving him a familiar playbook as he takes on the White House in legal filings and in the courtroom.

“The difference,” he says, between the Trump administration and other administrations, is that the Trump White House overreaches “over and over again.”

“So I guess the bottom line is this is consistent with what I and the people I’m working with have always done. There’s just more of it to do,” Lowell said on NPR’s “Morning Edition” last month.

Following a familiar strategy in Cook’s case as in his others, Lowell quickly filed a lawsuit on her behalf last week after Trump moved to fire her over unsupported allegations of mortgage fraud.

“Nothing in these vague, unsubstantiated allegations has any relevance to Gov. Cook’s role at the Federal Reserve, and they in no way justify her removal from the Board,” Lowell said in a statement on Friday, after Pulte filed a second criminal referral against Cook with the Justice Department.

Lowell also sharply criticized the effort during a Friday court hearing on the matter that ended without an immediate decision…

‘Gringos leave’: Protests in Mexico City targeting travelers rise as overtourism anger grows

-Protests against tourism have increased as tourist arrivals to popular destinations surpass pre-pandemic levels.

-As overtourism persists, residents’ reactions often move from tolerance to complaints to confrontations.

-Protests don’t repel travelers in the long-term, but they can pressure governments to act.

Nan Palmero was at a rehearsal dinner in Mexico City’s trendy Roma Norte neighborhood, ahead of a wedding of two American friends, when he heard a “rumbling” outside.

In 2025, Spain and Mexico have seen an upswing in protests demanding action against overtourism, as surging visitor numbers lead to housing crises and displacement of locals. In Mexico City, hundreds of residents marched through popular neighborhoods like Condesa and Roma, protesting rising rents and gentrification driven by the influx of tourists and digital nomads. Some demonstrations escalated with vandalism and confrontations, and slogans such as "get out of Mexico" and "expat = gentrifier" became common.

Similarly, Spain’s cities—from Barcelona to Palma de Mallorca—witnessed coordinated mass protests where locals used water pistols and banners to highlight how tourism and short-term rentals have priced them out of their neighborhoods. Protesters blocked restaurant entrances and symbolically sprayed tourists with water, drawing international attention to quality-of-life concerns. Despite government steps to curb illegal rentals and phase out vacation properties by 2028, arrivals continue to break records, aggravating frustration among locals who feel alienated by the “tourism-first culture” and transformation of traditional neighborhoods.

The protests in both countries reflect a broader global resistance to unchecked tourism, with demands for more balanced, sustainable policies to preserve local life and affordability.

European Union bans key ingredient in gel nail polish

The substance, TPO, is still permitted in the United States.

The European Union has banned a key ingredient found in many gel nail polishes, effective Monday, Sept. 1.

The ingredient, trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), helps gel and hybrid polishes harden under UV light.

While it had previously been restricted to professional use only, regulators say it is now prohibited in all settings, according to the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA).

TPO remains allowed in the United States and the ban is expected to go in to effect in the U.K. in 2026.

European regulators cited animal studies suggesting a potential safety concern.

However, it is not clear that gel nail polish poses a threat to human health given current exposure levels.

Still, European regulators often take a more aggressive approach to regulation, more often banning substances that pose even a theoretical risk to human health rather than waiting for human studies.

Beginning Sept. 1, distributors throughout the European Union may no longer supply products containing TPO, and salon owners are urged to take action.

HPRA advises salons to review ingredient lists, stop using products with TPO, dispose of them properly and confirm with suppliers that future stock is TPO-free. Salons are also encouraged to source products from reputable distributors who closely track regulatory changes.

For consumers, experts recommend asking salons about the products being used. Since polishes with TPO were originally intended for professional use only, they should no longer be available after Sept. 1.

Gel polish is popular because it is long-lasting and less prone to chipping.

U.S. agencies including the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise consumers to always read product labels, apply polish in well-ventilated areas and follow directions for safe use.

Google will not have to sell its Chrome web browser but must share information with competitors, a US federal judge has ordered

The remedies decided by District Judge Amit Mehta have emerged after a years-long court battle over Google's dominance in online search.

The case centred around Google's position as the default search engine on a range of its own products such as Android and Chrome as well as others made by the likes of Apple.

The US Department of Justice had demanded that Google sell Chrome - Tuesday's decision means the tech giant can keep it but it will be barred from having exclusive contracts and must share search data with rivals.

Google had proposed less drastic solutions, such as limiting its revenue-sharing agreements with firms like Apple to make its search engine the default on their devices and browsers.

On Tuesday, the company indicated that it viewed the ruling as a victory, and said the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) probably contributed to the outcome.

"Today's decision recognizes how much the industry has changed through the advent of AI, which is giving people so many more ways to find information," Google said in a statement after the ruling.

"This underlines what we've been saying since this case was filed in 2020: Competition is intense and people can easily choose the services they want," the statement continued.

The tech giant had denied wrongdoing since charges were first filed against it in 2020, saying its market dominance is because its search engine is a superior product to others and consumers simply prefer it to others.

Last year, Judge Mehta ruled that Google had used unfair methods to establish a monopoly over the online search market, actively working to maintain a level of dominance to the extent it broke US law.

But in his decision, Judge Mehta said a complete sell-off of Chrome was "a poor fit for this case".

Google will also not have to sell off its Android operating system, which powers most of the world's smartphones.

The company had argued that off-loading parts of its operations, such as Android, would mean they would effectively stop working properly.

"Today's remedy order agreed with the need to restore competition to the long-monopolized search market, and we are now weighing our options and thinking through whether the ordered relief goes far enough in serving that goal," Assistant Attorney General Abigail Slater wrote on X after the ruling.

Shares in Alphabet, Google's parent company, jumped by more than 8% after the ruling.

Smartphone-makers such as Apple, Samsung and Motorola will also benefit.

Before the ruling, Google paid such firms billions of dollars to exclusively pre-load or promote the tech company's products.

It was revealed at trial that Google paid more than $26bn for such deals with Apple, Mozilla and others in 2021.

Now, Google will not be allowed to enter into any exclusive contracts for Google Search, Chrome, Google Assistant or the Gemini app.

It means phone manufacturers will be free to pre-load or promote other search engines, browsers or AI assistants alongside Google's.

Google will, however, be able to continue paying distributors for default placement.

Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management, said the ruling was "good news for big tech".

"Apple also gets a nice win because the ruling forces Google to renegotiate the search deal annually," he said on X.

Judge Mehta's ruling "doesn't seem to be as draconian as the market was expecting," said Melissa Otto, head of research at S&P Global Visible Alpha.

With Google's search operation expected to generate close to $200bn this year, and tens of billions of that expected to go to distribution partners it is a win-win for the major corporate players involved in the case, Ms Otto said.

But Google competitor DuckDuckGo said the order failed to "force the changes necessary to address Google's illegal behaviour".

"As a result, consumers will continue to suffer," said DuckDuckGo founder and CEO Gabriel Weinberg.

The decision is not the end of the tech giant's court battles.

Later this month, Google is scheduled to go to trial in a separate case brought by the Justice Department where a judge found the company holds illegal monopolies in online advertising technology.

Gavin Newsom’s ‘Agricultural Equity’ Advisers Prepare Plan To Redistribute Farmland to Racial Minorities

California has 'the responsibility' to help 'rebuild the wealth that was stolen,' task force says.

California Democratic governor Gavin Newsom's "agricultural equity" advisers are finalizing recommendations for the state to redistribute farmland to non-white Californians and Native American tribes through land transfers and financial assistance programs that exclusively benefit racial minorities.

For more than two years, the California Agricultural Land Equity Task Force—part of Newsom's Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation—has crafted a set of policy recommendations to "equitably increase agricultural land access." It will deliver a final report to Newsom and the California legislature cementing those recommendations by the end of the year.

The task force's latest draft report, published ahead of the task force’s August meeting earlier this month, calls to deploy state resources to give non-white Californians a leg up in acquiring farmland, an effort it portrays as a form of reparations. The report says California should gift large amounts of state-owned lands to Native Americans, adopt indigenous knowledge practices for land management, and provide low-interest loans, downpayment assistance, and grants to fund land acquisition to black farmers.

Those and other policies, according to the task force, will help solve California's "agricultural land equity crisis." Land ownership statistics prove such discrimination exists, according to the report, which laments that "82% of privately held farmland in California is owned by producers who identify as white."

"The wealth of the U.S., including that of its agriculture industry, has been built on stolen land and the forced labor of California Tribal Nations, enslaved African Americans, and other exploited communities, who have been systematically excluded from land ownership and wealth-building opportunities," the report says. "Addressing these past and continuing harms requires active efforts to ensure that all people have secure and affordable access to viable land for the care and cultivation of food, fiber, medicine, and culturally valuable resources, free from systemic barriers and

racial disparities."

The initiative marks the latest left-wing attempt to pursue reparations through the agriculture industry. The Biden administration and congressional Democrats, for example, allocated $5 billion in the Inflation Reduction Act to grant loan forgiveness to non-white farmers, though that initiative was held up in the courts. In a separate program, the administration authorized more than $2 billion in payments to non-white farmers and ranchers whose applications for loans had been rejected by the USDA—rejections that the Biden administration chalked up to racial discrimination.

The initiative also comes as Newsom attempts to distance himself from some left-wing social positions ahead of a widely expected presidential run in 2028. Newsom in March criticized the term "Latinx," mocked Democrats who introduce themselves with their pronouns, and said it's "deeply unfair" for biological men to play in women's sports. At the same time, his administration has pursued some of the nation's most aggressive DEI policies.

While the Agricultural Land Equity Task Force doesn't recommend cash payments to Native American and black landowners, it does call for similarly aggressive measures.

Citing the the colonization of California by Europeans, the task force's draft report concludes that Native Americans should receive tens of thousands of acres of land from the state government. It recommends that the state funds programs to support land return and acquisition for tribes. And it calls on the state to offer financial incentives to exclusively benefit minority landowners, including a low-interest and forgivable loan program and a downpayment assistance program.

"Centuries of discrimination have taken both land and generational wealth from priority producers and land stewards," the draft report states, defining "priority producers" as African Americans, Native Indians, Alaskan Natives, Hispanics, Asian Americans, and Native Hawaiians. "It is the responsibility of the state to offer ... wrap-around support such as technical assistance to rebuild the wealth that was stolen."

California's Strategic Growth Council, a cabinet-level body that is housed within Newsom's climate innovation office, created the Agricultural Land Equity Task Force nearly two years ago. Since then, the task force has held more than a dozen public meetings to hear feedback from activists before delivering a final report.

During the task force's most recent meeting on Aug. 13, activists from racial justice groups pushed for even more aggressive policy recommendations than those outlined in the latest draft report.

"The task force should recommend a restorative land access pilot for black farmers model alongside existing land return initiatives," said Adam X, the CEO of Original Manufacturing, a Los Angeles-based "community development" group that describes itself as "builders of food equity" and "warriors for systemic justice."

"What we've seen with black farmers is that they've been systemically excluded from land ownership, from racially restrictive covenants to outright denial of access to farmland," added Rasheed Hislop, senior manager of the Community Alliance with Family Farmers, a "modern farming advisory services firm that focuses on creating equitable access to the agricultural industry."

"Black farmers aren't asking for handouts, they need hand-ups."

In a statement, a spokeswoman for the California Governor's Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation stressed that the task force does not implement policy and that its report consists of recommendations.

"The views and recommendations expressed in the draft report are those of the California Agricultural Land Equity Task Force and do not reflect an endorsement by the California Strategic Growth Council or the Governor’s Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation," the spokeswoman told the Free Beacon.

Irish comedian arrested in Britain for jokes on Twitter

Health Secretary Wes Streeting has said ministers need to "look at" laws concerning online speech, following the arrest of comedian Graham Linehan.

The health secretary said such laws had put "more expectation on police" and "diluted the focus and priorities of the public", adding "that's obviously something we need to look at".

Streeting told the BBC it was "very easy for people to criticise police" who were only enforcing laws that had been passed by MPs, saying ministers wanted officers to focus on street crime rather than posts on social media.

His comments come after the Father Ted co-creator was arrested at Heathrow Airport on suspicion of inciting violence in posts on the X website.

The arrest prompted a backlash from figures such as author JK Rowling and opposition parties including the Conservatives, who branded the arrest an "absurd infringement of free speech".

In a statement, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said "officers involved in the arrest had reasonable grounds to believe an offence had been committed" under a law called the Public Order Act.

Sir Mark said "reasonable people would agree that genuine threats of physical violence against an identified person or group should be acted upon by officers".

But the police chief said in "lesser cases...policing has been left between a rock and a hard place by successive governments".

He said: "I don't believe we should be policing toxic culture wars debates and officers are currently in an impossible position.

"I have offered to provide suggestions to the Home Office on where the law and policy should be clarified.

"Greater clarity and common sense would enable us to limit the resources we dedicate to tackling online statements to those cases creating real threats in the real world."

When asked about Linehan's arrest at Prime Minister's Questions, Sir Keir Starmer said "we must ensure police focus on the most serious issues".

"That includes tackling issues like anti-social behaviour, knife crime and violence," he prime minister said. "We have a long history of free speech in this country. I'm very proud of that and I will always defend it."

When asked about the Linehan case on the BBC's Today programme, Streeting echoed those words.

"As the prime minister and home secretary have been clear, we want the police to focus on policing streets rather than tweets," the health secretary said.

"But the thing we are mindful of, as a government that backs the police to keep us safe, is that police are there to enforce the laws that we as Parliament legislate for.

"So if over the years, with good intentions, Parliament has layered more and more expectation on police, and diluted the focus and priorities of the public, that's obviously something we need to look at."

Pressed on whether the law should be changed, Streeting said: "When it comes to speech, context is king. We do have to, as legislators, tread really carefully when it comes to boundaries of free speech."

Streeting said it was "hard for the police sometimes, because they have to apply the law as written, not the law as it was intended".

He also said "we are all - let's be honest - quite anxious" about some of the arrests and prosecutions over comments online.

Streeting added: "And you think, is that really what Parliament intended when we wrote these laws? So we've got to get the law right. Police are there to enforce the law that parliament makes."

Mr Linehan, 57, said he had been detained by five armed officers at Heathrow Airport after flying in from the US.

He said in an online Substack article that officials then became concerned for his health and took him to hospital.

The Metropolitan Police said that a man in his 50s had been arrested on 1 September at Heathrow Airport and taken to hospital.

The police said his condition was not life-threatening and he was bailed pending further investigation.

In his Substack article, Mr Linehan said his arrest was related to three posts on X from April.

The first post, from his X feed, said: "If a trans-identified male is in a female-only space, he is committing a violent, abusive act. Make a scene, call the cops and if all else fails, punch him in the balls."

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch was critical of the arrest, saying: "Sending five officers to arrest a man for a tweet isn't policing, it's politics. Under Labour, we routinely see burglary, knife crime and assaults go unsolved, while resources are wasted on thought-policing."

But new Green Party leader Zack Polanski told BBC Newsnight the posts were "totally unacceptable" and the arrest seemed "proportionate".

Sir Max Hill, the former director of public prosecutions for England and Wales, said police use various laws, such as the Public Order Act, to prosecute people accused of breaking the law through their speech.

Sir Max said people can be prosecuted for inciting violence.

"If you don't have that mechanism, then I'm afraid chaos ensues," he said. "It is possible to cross over into criminality by words alone."

Shami Chakrabarti, a Labour peer and former director of Liberty, a civil liberties group, said "the public order statute book and speech offences in particular do need an overarching review".

She said some offences related to alarm and distress were "too broad".

"But inciting violence must always be a criminal offence," Baroness Chakrabarti added.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is expected to raise the Linehan case and rail against "censorship" in the UK, when he gives evidence to the House Judiciary Committee in the US on free speech on Wednesday.

Senior American politicians, including US Vice President JD Vance, have raised concerns about freedom of speech in the UK and prosecutions over comments posted online.

Since coming to office this year, the US vice president has repeatedly criticised measures like the UK's Online Safety Act and claimed free speech in Europe was "in retreat".

The case of Lucy Connolly, who was jailed for stirring up racial hatred against asylum seekers following the Southport attack last year, has been highlighted by some politicians in the debate about free speech in the UK.

Separately, Mr Linehan is also facing a separate charge of harassment - which he denies - and is due to appear in court on Thursday.

Gold price up 42 percent in 12 months

With gold prices jumping to a new all-time high Wednesday, you might be wondering how much that gold bar you bought at Costco could be worth today.

As of Wednesday morning, gold traded around $3,549 per ounce, up from about $2,500 a year ago — a roughly 42% increase.

If you bought a Costco gold bar last year, it would likely fetch much more today than you paid. Still, some of those gains will be reduced once you factor in dealer fees and taxes.

Investors tend to seek out gold during times of uncertainty. Gold often gains when interest rates fall, because lower yields make assets that don’t earn interest, like gold, more appealing, according to research by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Currently, inflation concerns and economic uncertainty are adding to the momentum, say Jon Ulin, a certified financial planner based in Boca Raton, Florida.

“With two wars ongoing, trade tensions, U.S. debt concerns and fears over [Federal Reserve] independence, gold’s traditional ‘fear hedge’ role remains strong,” Ulin says. “It’s beating bonds at providing portfolio safety.”

Here’s how much a 1-ounce Costco gold bar purchased in September 2024 could be worth today, based on its listed purchase price and the spot price at 9 a.m. ET on Wednesday:

-Purchase price (September 2024): $2,679

-Spot price (Sept. 3, 2025): $3,549

-Unrealized gain: $870

-Percentage increase: 32.5%

If you’re thinking of selling your Costco gold bar for a profit, don’t expect to keep the difference between what you paid and the current spot price.

The spot price is more of a benchmark for negotiation, from which you can expect about 5% to 10% less from most dealers, says Ulin.

At brick-and-mortar bullion shops, you may get a better deal. Shops the Wall Street Journal spoke with in New York City in April typically offered 1% to 5% below the spot price. With these shops, you also get the convenience of in-person evaluations and immediate payment.

“Most buyers will likely melt the bar down for resale, so whether it’s still in its original Costco packaging with the certificate doesn’t make a huge difference,” says Ulin. “Unlike luxury watches, where the provenance and paperwork can significantly increase the value, gold bars are more about weight and purity.”

Avoid selling through eBay or Facebook Marketplace, where scams and lowball offers are common, says Ulin.

The Internal Revenue Service classifies physical gold — including Costco bars, coins and jewelry — as a collectible, says Troy Lewis, a certified public accountant and professor of accounting and tax at Brigham Young University.

If you sell within a year of buying, any profit will be taxed as ordinary income with no cap on the rate. If you hold for more than a year, the gain is treated as a long-term capital gain — but unlike stocks or real estate, which have preferential rates that max out at 20%, collectibles are taxed at ordinary income rates, capped at up to 28% depending on your income bracket.

Beyond federal taxes, sellers may also face state income taxes, which can vary widely. Unlike the federal government, most states don’t distinguish between collectibles and other capital gains — they simply tax income. Some states, like Florida or Texas, have no income tax at all, while others — such as California and New York — impose double-digit rates high enough to “curl your toes,” says Lewis.

High earners may also owe the 3.8% net investment income tax, which applies when modified adjusted gross income exceeds $200,000 for single filers or $250,000 for married couples filing jointly, per the IRS.

Altogether, the combined tax bite can meaningfully shrink the real return on gold. Still, Lewis says taxes shouldn’t be the sole factor in deciding whether to sell. The tax bill is unavoidable — the question is whether you’d rather lock in gains now or keep holding and see where prices go, he says.

JFK’s grandson, Jack Schlossberg, eyes bid for Congress after long-time NY rep, Jerry Nadler, announces retirement

Longtime New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler, 78, announced he would retire next year, saying it’s time to pass torch to younger generation of Democratic leaders.

Jack Schlossberg, the social media star and grandson of President John F. Kennedy, is considering running for Congress next year to replace longtime Democratic stalwart Rep. Jerrold Nadler, who announced his retirement plans earlier this week.

Schlossberg, 32, has never held public office, but told The New York Times on Tuesday that it was “certainly a possibility” he would run to fill Nadler’s seat, a highly prized New York City district spanning the center of Manhattan.

The 32-year-old Yale and Harvard graduate, the son of former diplomat Caroline Kennedy, has risen to fame in recent years, mixing political commentary and social media influencing, including serving as a political correspondent for Vogue during the 2024 election. He currently hosts a political commentary show on YouTube, recording episodes from inside his van.

Schlossberg is also a regular, scathing critic of family member Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the Trump administration’s Health and Human Services secretary and the 32-year-old’s cousin.

Nadler announced his retirement plans in an interview with The New York Times published Monday, describing a need to pass his seat to the next generation of leaders after watching Democrats lose as an ailing Joe Biden ceded his 2024 campaign to Kamala Harris.

“Watching the Biden thing really said something about the necessity for generational change in the party, and I think I want to respect that,” Nadler said, adding that he hoped a successor “can maybe help us more.”

The retirement has set off a flurry of political maneuvering and speculation about who might replace Nadler and what that might say about the future of the party in New York and beyond.

Other famous names have been rumored to be considering the race — progressive star and former Federal Trade Commission boss Lisa Khan; Sex and the City actor and former gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon; and Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; plus a gaggle of New York lawmakers — but only non-profit founder Liam Elkind has formally entered the primary.

The race to replace Nadler will take place next June, and it is expected to be a high-visibility contest awash in cash, given that it’s taking place in the heart of U.S.’s media and finance capital.

“It’s the most coveted and arguably important congressional seat in New York because of the history of political influence from that seat, and also the fundraising base that comes with it,” Evan Thies, a Democratic strategist, told Politico of the race. “That allows you to be a national player and leader in the party, and you’re also representing one of the highest voting blocs for Democrats of any Congressional district in the country.”

Nadler’s unexpected exit plans, just a year after he speculated he might serve for another decade, is the latest shake-up in an already especially topsy-turvy season of New York politics, following the surprise victory of democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani in the city’s Democratic primary.

Brazil's ex-President Bolsonaro coup trial begins — here's what to know

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is facing a high-profile trial on charges of attempting a coup following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election. Prosecutors allege that Bolsonaro, with the help of close associates and military officials, conspired to overturn the election results, plotted to assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, and incited the January 8, 2023 riots in Brasília that saw government buildings stormed by his supporters.

If convicted, Bolsonaro could face more than 40 years in prison, though a guilty verdict on the coup plot charge alone may carry up to 12 years. He is currently under house arrest and barred from running for office until 2030 due to prior rulings on electoral misconduct. Bolsonaro denies all charges, calling the case a politically motivated "witch hunt" and questioning the impartiality of the Supreme Court justices overseeing his trial. Authorities have intensified security, viewing him as a flight risk—especially after discovering draft asylum requests and his recent stay at the Hungarian embassy.

This trial is considered historic for Brazil, marking a major test for its democracy and legal system, and has heightened political tensions in the country and with international allies like the United States. The verdict is expected by September 12, with Bolsonaro’s defense possibly seeking political amnesty if convicted.
