The children of US Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) relentlessly tormented their mom’s personal assistant, driving him to commit suicide, an explosive lawsuit claims.

Brandon O’Brien, 35, worked for the senator’s wife, Nancy Bass Wyden — owner of Manhattan’s famed Strand Bookstore — from June 2022 to September 2024and was “frequently tasked” with caring for the couple’s young kids, including driving them to school in NYC and watching them during trips to Disneyworld.

The disturbing behavior began in September 2022 when thecouple’s then-10-year-old daughter allegedly exposed herself to O’Brien, making “sexually explicit” comments and asking about his “intimate life” during school drop-offs, O’Brien’s husband, Thomas Maltezos, alleged in court papers he filed against Bass Wyden and her company, Bass Real Estate LLC.

But the mom — whose family founded the East Village book shop nearly a century ago — allegedly did nothing about the behavior, Maltezos contended.

Meanwhile, the Wydens’ teenage son berated O’Brien with homophobic slurs such as “f—-t” and “zest kitten,” and the boy said his “his football team ‘would rape him,”‘ the suit claimed.

The boy allegedly threw things at O’Brien and the mom once “maced her son to restrain him but inadvertently maced Mr. O’Brien,” according to the Manhattan Supreme Court paper show.

Some of the alleged abuse took place at Disney in front of Maltezos and his mother, the widower claimed.

The lawsuit is “baseless and deeply misguided” and “riddled with false accusations,” a Bass Real Estate spokesperson said in a statement. “It appears to be a continued effort to deflect attention from O’Brien’s own serious misconduct, including a documented pattern of theft from those he once worked for.”

When O’Brien finally quit in frustration on Sept. 30, 2024, Bass Wyden, 64, filed a report with the NYPD the next day, accusing him of stealing $650,000 in credit card and other thefts, authorities said.

Bass Wyden allegedly hired a private investigator to “probe into Mr. O’Brien’s personal life and business dealings,” according to court papers. By January, the prominent businesswoman “spread false rumors … to industry contacts and [his] professional colleagues,” leaving O’Brien distraught.

Maltezos announced his husband’s death in emotional online posts.

“It is with a shattered heart that I announce my beloved husband … died by suicide,” he wrote. “Brandon worked as an executive assistant and made every space better with his quiet grace and unwavering loyalty. I am completely heartbroken without him.”

Authorities dropped the theft case after the suicide. Lawyers for Maltezos insisted the accusation was false.

“The allegations against the senator’s wife are shocking, disturbing, and cruel — no person should ever be subject to this level of harassment, much less in the workplace,” Maltezos’ attorneys, Eric Baum and Reyna Lubin, said in a statement.

Ron Wyden, 76, is a twice-married father of five who was elected to the House in 1981.

The progressive Democrat, who has slammed President Trump over the Epstein scandal, DOGE staffing cuts and immigration, became a senator in 1996.

He married Bass Wyden, 12 years his junior, in 2005.

The couple has three kids in addition to Ron Wyden’s two adult children from his first marriage.

Public records show the senator and his wife have a home in Portland, but social media shows Bass Wyden appears to be in the Big Apple frequently to attend to her family’s 98-year-old business.

The senator’s older son, hedge fund investor Adam Wyden, publicly broke with his tax-the-rich dad in 2021over the Biden Administration’s plan to tax capital gains.

“Why does he hate us / the American dream so much?!?!?!?! Reality is: most legislators have never built anything… so I guess it’s easier to mindlessly and haphazardly try and tear stuff down,” the younger Wyden wrote of his legislator dad on X, in response to an exchange between the Congressman and Elon Musk.

Washington state election chief refuses to comply with Dept. of Justice request for voter rolls

Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs has no intention of complying with a U.S. Department of Justice request for information from the state’s voter registration list.

On Sept. 8, the DOJ sent a letter to Hobbs requesting a copy of the state's voter registration database within 14 days. The request included sensitive personal data for each registered voter: full name, date of birth, residential address, driver's license number, or the last four digits of their Social Security number.

The DOJ says it intends to use the information to look for voter ineligibility.

“The information the DOJ is requesting is protected under RCW 29A.08.710 and not subject to disclosure,” SOS Director of External Affairs Charlie Boisner emailed The Center Square on Thursday. “Washington voters expect and trust us to protect their personal information, and releasing it without clear legal justification would undermine that trust.”

In May, the DOJ began sending requests to several states for copies of voter registration databases. The department cited authority under the National Voter Registration Act and the Help America Vote Act.

Some states have cooperated, but several states – including Maine, Oregon, and now Washington – have refused the request, citing privacy concerns and contending the government has no legal basis for it.

“The letter does not indicate that the information would be used to identify criminals or illegal immigrants,” Boisner continued. “Secretary Hobbs is concerned this request represents an overreach by the federal government into Washington’s independent management of its voter database.”

State law, he said, means processes and systems are already in place – RCW 29A.08.125 (5), (7d), and (10) – to verify a person’s eligibility to vote in Washington.

“The Office of the Secretary of State has no authority over immigration enforcement or criminal investigation, so using the information of legally registered voters for those purposes is not within the scope of this office,” Boisner noted.

Washington State Republican Party Chair Jim Walsh pointed out the supremacy of federal law over state law.

“Is this a joke? State law does not supersede federal law. Article 1, Section 2, of the Washington State Constitution recognizes the U.S. Constitution as the ‘supreme law of the land.’ By extension, federal statutory law takes precedence over state law when there's a conflict,” Walsh emailed The Center Square.

Walsh, who also serves in the state House of Representatives, is behind an initiative campaign to require Washington residents to prove they are U.S. citizens before receiving an election ballot.

Under the proposed measure, a prospective voter must show an enhanced driver’s license or present another form of identification, like a passport or birth certificate, at a county auditor’s office when they first register. Those already registered to vote would have their registration canceled if they don’t supply such proof by the November 2027 election. That’s when the changes would take effect.

Boisner said his office is aware of the DOJ's litigation against states that aren't complying.

“The DOJ recently publicized its plans for litigation against Oregon and Maine secretaries of state for not turning over all the information they requested, so the threat of litigation against Washington is real. We are assessing our options and reviewing the legal basis for the request, as Secretary Hobbs has the utmost respect for the rule of law,” Boisner said. “However, a letter of request from the DOJ is not itself law, and any action we take must be grounded in clear legal authority. Secretary Hobbs is committed to protecting the privacy of Washington voters and upholding the trust they place in us to safeguard their personal information.”

Walsh floated another possibility.

“Speaking hypothetically, if a whistleblower in the state government has already provided the U.S. Department of Justice with Washington's voter registration data, [DOJ’s] lawful request might be a test of Hobbs' effectiveness and transparency,” he said. “Will he pass?”

Since 2016, George Soros’s Open Society Foundations (OSF), now run with his son Alexander, has poured over $80 million into groups tied to terrorism or extremist violence. The evidence is stark: Open Society has sent millions of dollars into U.S.-based organizations that engage in “direct actions” that the FBI defines as domestic terrorism. These groups include the Center for Third World Organizing and its militant partner Ruckus Society, which trained activists in property destruction and sabotage during the 2020 riots, and the Sunrise Movement, which endorsed the Antifa-linked Stop Cop City campaign, in which activists currently face over 40 domestic terrorism charges and 60 racketeering indictments. Open Society has funneled more than $2.3 million into Al-Haq, a nongovernmental organization (NGO) based in the West Bank and long accused of ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), which the European Union and the United States designate as a foreign terrorist organization. Grants to Al-Haq between 2016 and 2023 ranged from $400,000 in general support to an $800,000 institutional award. In September 2025, the U.S. State Department sanctioned Al-Haq, citing its role in advancing campaigns that “directly engaged in the [International Criminal Court’s] illegitimate targeting of Israel.” That means Soros’s foundation has not only financed extremist groups within the United States but also funneled millions abroad to entities now formally sanctioned by Washington.

Well "Au" is the chemical symbol for gold and of course "H₂O" is the symbol for water, So when you put them together it's Goldwater.

And what happened in 1964?.... Barry Goldwater lost to Lyndon B Johnson in what appeared to be the first major rigged election after JFK was assassinated.

So this totally makes sense, JFK was trying to take down the deep state while Lyndon B Johnson was undermining him the whole way and was, without a doubt, involved in JFK's assassination.

During a meeting with permanent members of the Russian Security Council, Putin said he was ready to extend by one year the last arms control treaty between Washington and Moscow, Reuters reports. This would allow time to negotiate its further extension, likely by another five years. This would be "if the US reciprocates, to prevent a new arms race," Putin stipulated.

NASA’s IMAP Mission ‘Go’ for Launch

NASA, SpaceX, and spacecraft mission managers are moving forward with the launch of the agency’s IMAP (Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe) mission to study space weather from the Sun and map the edges of our solar system.

During the agency’s Launch Readiness Review, Dr. Denton Gibson, NASA’s launch director, and the launch team polled “go” for launch for IMAP and its two rideshares:

NASA’s Carruthers Geocorona Observatory and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Follow On – Lagrange 1 (SWFO-L1) satellite.

NASA will host a prelaunch news conference at 2:30 p.m. EDT Sunday to discuss the three missions. Coverage will stream on the agency’s website and YouTube channel with the following participants:

The parliamentary election for Moldova is scheduled for September 28th.

There is considerable anxiety afoot, as EU security elements begin bolstering the internal police force of Moldova. It appears their concern is widespread unrest could follow the election results. Why would the official government of Moldovan President Maia Sandu be concerned about post-election turmoil?

Well, consider that Maia Sandu’s election last year was not won by a vote of the majority of Moldovan’s who physically reside in Moldova, but by a reported half-million mail-in ballots that tipped the scales in her favor. Those same mail-in ballots also changed the results of the referendum that asked Moldovan citizens if they wanted to join the European Union.

The stakes are very high for the EU and NATO alignment. If the Moldova parliamentary election results in a more pro-Russian governing body, the best designed plans of the U.K/NATO/EU and global intelligence apparatus could be significantly damaged.

=+Mai Sandu’s Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) is in a tenuous position. Sandu and PAS are globalists, influenced a great deal by European money and promises of affluence==. Their collective opposition within Moldova is an assembly of nationalist voices represented by Patriotic Bloc, a new group of existing pro-Russian opposition parties.

Polls have indicated that Sandu’s PAS is likely to lose the parliamentary election, but the European Union cannot accept this outcome. Thus, the issue of these mysterious mail-in ballots surfaces again, and that explains why the Moldovan police and EU security forces are preparing for civil unrest.

In August, the leaders of France (Macron), Germany (Merz) and Poland (Tusk) visited the capital city of Chisinauto proclaim their support for President Maia Sandu and the pro-EU movement. The trio, also called the ‘coalition of the willing’, represent fierce opposition to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

On the economic front Moldovan citizens have been coping with high inflation, energy shortages and have seen little progress in the Sandu pledge to clean up internal bribery and govt corruption. Meanwhile, Sandu has been traveling around Europe and Great Britain seeking financial support that can deflect some of the economic issues.

The election next weekend represents a critical inflection point for Europe. If the EU loses the support of the Moldovan parliament, it would be much harder to utilize the Romanian NATO military base for a European war against Russia, a war they have been trying to provoke with increased aggressiveness.

Shortly before King Charles orchestrated the second state visit by President Trump, the U.K monarch met with Sandu to express his strategic support against a common enemy, Vladimir Putin (pictured below). However, it can be reasonably argued the majority of the people who live within Moldova do not hold the same opinion. They do not want war with Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is watching this unfold, while hearing from the pro-Russian elements who live within the Moldavian region known as Transnistria. Indeed, much like the Donbas and eastern Ukraine region where western forces within Ukraine attacked the Russian enclaves, there are indications of the same dynamic within eastern Moldova.

If the EU security services think they will lose the election in Moldova, Sandu will cancel it.

James Webb Space Telescope reveals dark beads and lopsided star patterns in Saturn's atmosphere

A study of Saturn's atmospheric structure using data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has revealed complex and mysterious features unseen before on any planet in our Solar System.

The results were presented last week by Professor Tom Stallard of Northumbria University, at the EPSC-DPS2025 Joint Meeting in Helsinki.

“This opportunity to use JWST was the first time we have ever been able to make such detailed near-infrared observations of Saturn's aurora and upper atmosphere.

The results came as a complete surprise,” said Professor Stallard.

“We anticipated seeing emissions in broad bands at the various levels. Instead, we’ve seen fine-scaled patterns of beads and stars that, despite being separated by huge distances in altitude, may somehow be interconnected – and may also be linked to the famous hexagon deeper in Saturn’s clouds.

These features were completely unexpected and, at present, are completely unexplained.”

The international team of researchers, comprising 23 scientists from institutions across the UK, US and France, made the discoveries during a continuous 10-hour observation period on 29 November 2024, as Saturn rotated beneath JWST's view.

The team focused on detecting infrared emissions by a positively charged molecular form of hydrogen, H3+, which plays a key role in reactions in Saturn’s atmosphere and so can provide valuable insights into the chemical and physical processes at work.

JWST’s Near Infrared Spectrograph allowed the team to simultaneously observe H₃⁺ ions from the ionosphere, 1,100 kilometres above Saturn’s nominal surface, and methane molecules in the underlying stratosphere, at an altitude of 600 kilometres.

In the electrically charged plasma of the ionosphere, the team observed a series of dark, bead-like features embedded in bright auroral halos.

These structures remained stable over hours but appeared to drift slowly over longer periods.

Around 500 kilometres lower, in Saturn’s stratosphere, the team discovered an asymmetric star-shaped feature.

This unusual structure extended out from Saturn's north pole towards the equator. Only four of the star’s six arms were visible, with two mysteriously missing, creating a lopsided pattern.

“Saturn's upper atmosphere has proven incredibly difficult to study with missions and telescope facilities to date due to the extremely weak emissions from this region,” said Professor Stallard.

“JWST's incredible sensitivity has revolutionised our ability to observe these atmospheric layers, revealing structures that are completely unlike anything we've seen before on any planet.”

The team mapped the exact locations of the features and found that they overlaid the same region of Saturn at different levels, with the star’s arms appearing to emanate from positions directly above the points of the storm-cloud-level hexagon.

This suggests that the processes that are driving the patterns may influence a column stretching right through Saturn’s atmosphere.

“We think that the dark beads may result from complex interactions between Saturn's magnetosphere and its rotating atmosphere, potentially providing new insights into the energy exchange that drives Saturn's aurora.

The asymmetric star pattern suggests previously unknown atmospheric processes operating in Saturn's stratosphere, possibly linked to the hexagonal storm pattern observed deeper in Saturn's atmosphere,” said Professor Stallard.

“Tantalisingly, the darkest beads in the ionosphere appear to line up with the strongest star-arm in the stratosphere, but it’s not clear at this point whether they are actually linked or whether it’s just a coincidence.”

While both features could have significant implications for understanding atmospheric dynamics on gas giant planets, more work is needed to provide explanations for the underlying causes.

The team hopes that additional time may be granted in future to carry out follow-up observations of Saturn with JWST to further explore the features.

With the planet at its equinox, which occurs approximately every 15 Earth years, the structures may change dramatically as Saturn's orientation to the Sun shifts and the northern hemisphere moves into autumn.

"Since neither atmospheric layer can be observed using ground-based telescopes, the need for JWST follow-up observations during this key time of seasonal change on Saturn is pressing," Stallard added.

The accompanying story was irresistible: Isabella Tapia, a Maya woman from Chiapas, barefoot on her ancestral land, had just been selected as Mexico’s first Indigenous astronaut candidate.

Within hours, the AI-generated image and the unsubstantiated narrative had been shared thousands of times across Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.

Comments poured in from across Latin America—words of pride, inspiration, and hope. Indigenous youth tagged their friends. Parents shared it with their children. The story touched something deep in the collective imagination.

But Isabella Tapia doesn’t exist—at least not as a single person. Unless an official announcement comes forward with a real photo, we’re betting Isabella Tapia is a composite character, representing the aspirations of countless Indigenous youth across Mexico and the potential that remains largely untapped in the country’s emerging space program.

Why the Story Resonated

The viral response to Isabella’s fictional journey reveals a profound hunger for representation in space exploration.

While Mexico has produced several notable astronauts, none have been Indigenous—a significant gap given that Indigenous peoples make up approximately 10% of Mexico’s population.

In Chiapas, where Isabella’s story was set, education levels for indigenous women are extremely low—most only go to school for an average of 6 years.

While an estimated 10% of the population of Mexico is indigenous, it is the least represented in higher education… only between 1% and 3% of higher education enrollment in Mexico is indigenous.

Isabella’s fictional achievement represents not just individual triumph, but a reimagining of what’s possible.

The story struck a chord because it offered hope in the face of real challenges. As one viral tweet put it: “Whether or not Isabella is real, the girls who see this and start studying physics tonight are very real.”

Mexico’s Actual Space Heritage

Behind the fiction lies a remarkable reality: Mexico has been making genuine strides in space exploration, building on a foundation laid by pioneering astronauts who blazed trails for future generations.

Rodolfo Neri Vela: The Trailblazer

Rodolfo Neri Vela (born February 19, 1952, Chilpancingo, Guerrero estado (state), Mexico) is a Mexican scientist and engineer, and he was the first Mexican citizen to fly into space.

Dr. Vela became Mexico’s first astronaut, as a mission specialist for the joint NASA/European Space Agency mission STS-61B on November 27, 1985.

He spent 165 hours in outer space aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis, helping to place in orbit the Mexican satellite Morelos 2.

During the mission the crew deployed the MORELOS-B, AUSSATT II, and SATCOM K-2 communications satellites, conducted two six-hour spacewalks to demonstrate space station construction techniques, and Neri requested tortillas in his food supply on the flight.

Subsequently, NASA began including tortillas on shuttle and ISS missions, since tortillas, unlike regular bread, did not create crumbs and could be used to make sandwiches or hold other food items.

Neri Vela’s achievement was monumental for Mexico. He is the second Latin American to have traveled to space after Cuban cosmonaut Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez.

Today, he continues to advocate for Mexico’s space development as a Professor in the Faculty of Engineering of the UNAM.

A secret Russian-funded network is attempting to disrupt upcoming democratic elections in an eastern European state, the BBC has found.

Using an undercover reporter, we discovered the network promised to pay participants if they posted pro-Russian propaganda and fake news undermining Moldova's pro-EU ruling party ahead of the country's 28 September parliamentary ballot.

Participants were paid to find supporters of Moldova's pro-Russia opposition to secretly record - and also to carry out a so-called poll. This was done in the name of a non-existent organisation, making it illegal. The results of this selective sampling, an organiser from the network suggested, could lay the groundwork to question the outcome of the election.

The results of the so-called poll, suggesting the ruling party will lose, have already been published online.

In fact, official polls suggest the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) founded by President Maia Sandu is currently ahead of the pro-Russian Patriotic Electoral Bloc (BEP).

We have found links between the secret network and Moldovan oligarch Ilan Shor - sanctioned by the US for "the Kremlin's malign influence operations" and now a fugitive in Moscow. The UK has also sanctioned him for corruption.

A 69-year-old Canadian citizen has been indicted in North Carolina on charges of illegally registering and casting ballots in U.S. federal elections, including the 2024 presidential election.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Denis Bouchard, a longtime resident of the United States who never obtained citizenship, allegedly lied about his status to secure voter registration in New Hanover and Pender Counties.

Federal prosecutors say he voted in both the 2022 congressional elections and the 2024 presidential election.

The indictment alleges that Bouchard falsely certified his citizenship on registration forms in multiple election cycles.

Prosecutors further suggested he may have been casting ballots in North Carolina elections for decades, raising concerns about the vulnerability of voter rolls.

“Every single time a noncitizen casts an illegal vote in North Carolina, it steals and nullifies the vote of an actual citizen,” U.S. Attorney Ellis Boyle said.

“If the records are correct, this Canadian citizen appears to have voted in New Hanover and Pender County elections over the past 20 years.”

Federal charges include two counts of fraud and false statements regarding naturalization, and two counts of willfully defrauding residents of North Carolina by interfering with the integrity of elections.

If convicted, Bouchard faces up to five years in prison for each count.

The autumn equinox is now upon us!

Today marks the moment that the sun crosses the celestial equator, ushering in the beginning of astronomical autumn in the northern hemisphere, which brings with it the inevitability of longer nights, perfect for stargazing.

In 2025, the autumn equinox will occur on Sept. 22 at 2:20 p.m. EDT (1820 GMT), when the sun moves southward across the celestial equator.

The celestial equator is an imaginary projection of Earth's equator into space, forming a circle around the sky that divides the northern and southern celestial hemispheres.

The sun's drop across the equator is due to a 23.5° tilt in Earth's rotational axis, which shifts our star's apparent path in the sky as our planet goes about its yearly orbit.

We experience two equinoxes each year, one in March and one in September, when the tilt of Earth is such that the sun shines equally on the north and south hemispheres.

During an equinox day and night boast a roughly even 12-hour duration. It is for this characteristic that the name equinox was derived, from the Latin words "aequus" (equal) and "nox" (night).

On the day of the 2025 autumnal equinox, the sun rises almost exactly due east and sets to the west.

The months that follow will see cooler temperatures set in as the northern hemisphere receives less direct sunlight, while the nights will grow longer and darker — a trend that will continue until we celebrate the winter solstice on Dec. 21.

While Sept. 22 marks the beginning of autumn in the northern hemisphere, the exact opposite is true south of the equator, where spring is about to begin in earnest!

Australia’s SpIRIT nanosatellite has successfully completed the initial phase of its mission, marking a milestone achievement for Australia’s place and reputation in the global space industry.

Led by the University of Melbourne, in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI), the Space Industry Responsive Intelligent Thermal nanosatellite – known as ‘SpIRIT’ – is the first space telescope funded by the Australian Space Agency to carry a foreign space agency’s scientific instrument as its main payload.

Since its launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from California in December 2023, SpIRIT has circled the Earth more than 9,000 times – travelling a distance comparable to a round trip between Earth and Mars – and has been in orbit for over 600 days.

SpIRIT’s radiators after deployment, flying high over the Indian Ocean. The “Eagle”, a copper structure on the right radiator can be seen, which is designed to help dissipate heat from SpIRIT’s thermal management system.

Principal Investigator, University of Melbourne Professor Michele Trenti, said SpIRIT’s successful commissioning period is a true milestone for Australian technological advancements and space capabilities.

“SpIRIT is a complex satellite designed and built in Australia, with many components flying for the first time and hosting a scientific instrument contributed by the Italian Space Agency,” Professor Trenti said.

“Now that SpIRIT has completed rigorous testing in space, we are confident it’s ready to commence the next phase of its mission, which is a truly exciting.”

Expected to remain in orbit for more than 1000 days in total, SpIRIT’s core mission will now transition from testing flight capabilities and Australian space technology to scientific observation.

SpIRIT will be scanning large areas of space using its HERMES X-ray detector to spot cosmic explosions called gamma rays bursts, which are created when stars collide or die.

These explosions are unpredictable and difficult to spot, like a needle in a haystack.

Space-Based Nuclear Detection Mission Endures

Roughly 12,550 miles above Earth, a constellation of U.S. global positioning satellites orbits the planet. GPS satellites also carry a sophisticated system designed to detect above ground nuclear detonations anytime, anywhere.

The Global Burst Detection system, developed by Sandia and Los Alamos national laboratories, carries a suite of sensors and instruments capable of identifying signals from nuclear detonations and providing real-time information to the U.S. military and government.

The final system in the current block of eight systems launched into space in May 2025. Meanwhile, the next series, scheduled for initial deployment in 2027, already has several units completed and ready to be integrated with host satellites.

This mission has endured for more than 60 years at the Labs. Teams of engineers, scientists and technologists work a decade ahead to develop new complex technologies that can withstand the harsh space environment while countering evolving threats.

"The launch of the final IIIA series Global Burst Detector marks an important milestone in our efforts to enhance nuclear detection capabilities," Sandia manager Andrew Stuart said.

"The collaboration between Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory has been key to developing this advanced system, which will significantly contribute to our national security by improving our ability to detect nuclear detonations from space."

Marc Kippen, program manager for Space Systems and Science at Los Alamos, said, "The May launch is a testament to the decades of effort that it takes to maintain uninterrupted national security space capability.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is proud to contribute to this important and enduring mission."

A space-based deterrent

The Global Burst Detection system serves as part of the space-based component of the U.S. Nuclear Detonation Detection System.

This network of satellites, sensors and ground stations can detect, time-stamp and record electromagnetic pulse energy in specific bands, and X-ray and optical signals.

This information helps the U.S. Air Force precisely determine the location, time and yield of a nuclear detonation.

Funded by NNSA, the sensors undergo rigorous testing and mission assurance processes to ensure they perform reliably during their 15-plus-year mission.

Sandia performs a series of qualification tests, including shock, thermal, thermal vacuum, vibration and prompt X-ray tests, to demonstrate the system's ability to survive launch, deployment and operation in space.

Sandia and Los Alamos design and produce the system's five subsystems, with Sandia integrating them into a complete detection system.

The final of the IIIA series

The last IIIA series Global Burst Detector launched into space from Cape Canaveral on May 30. Teams from Sandia, Los Alamos and the U.S. Space Force calibrated the system in June and conducted early on-orbit testing to verify functionality.

For the final phase, the team will share the configuration and setting information with the U.S. Nuclear Detonation Detection System team for integration into the current satellite network.

Delivering the next generation

In 2024, Sandia and Los Alamos delivered the first two flight systems for the next generation of detectors, the IIIF, to Lockheed Martin for installation on GPS satellites. The first unit is scheduled to launch in 2027.

Teams from Sandia and Los Alamos worked together for 12 years to design and qualify the new system.

A key component of the IIIF series, the Spectral Imaging Geolocation Hyper-Temporal Sensor, or SIGHTS, has roots in Sandia's Laboratory Directed Research and Development program.

More than a decade ago, researchers conducted basic science to push the boundaries of remote sensing. That work laid the foundation for a new megapixel-density optical sensor, capable of capturing tens of thousands of frames per second.

This enables the sensor to better differentiate between legitimate signals and false positives.

Over the next decade, Sandia and Los Alamos plan to deliver, integrate and launch more IIIF Global Burst Detector systems to continue the mission.

How to Respond to Donald Trump’s Threats to the Anti-Fascist Movement

While Donald Trump has announced on his social network that the “antifa” movement is now considered a “terrorist organization,” we offer you a translation of the text “Make Ready: Safeguarding Our Movements against Repression – How to Respond to Donald Trump’s Threats, published on September 18 on Crimethinc.com, which puts this statement in context, and then gives some advice not to panic. While Marine Le Pen, in 2017, already called for the dissolution of all “antifail militias,” and the rise to the power of the RN is no longer a chimera, this text, if it is rooted in American reality, is also instructive for us.

On September 17, in a post on Truth Social, Donald Trump said he would refer to “Antifa” as “a major terrorist organization.” What does this mean? How can we prepare for the storm?

It is always hard to know how much Trump’s performative statements should be taken seriously. He often makes delusional statements to test their impact on his audience: he throws ideas in the air to see what makes the nas a tide, and then he stumbles where there is no backlash.

But this time, his administration follows to the letter the classic manual of fascism. One of his supporters even went so far as to declare, without irony, that Charlie Kirk’s assassination was “the burning of the American Reichstag.”

The next step in this textbook is obvious: to broaden its targets, from immigrants to anarchists, to leftists, and ultimately extending to all opponents of the regime.

So yes, in the past, Trump has already made statements in which he referred to “antifa” as a “terrorist organization,” especially at the beginning of the revolt that followed the murder of George Floyd.

But at the time, the rest of the federal government was largely holding back its impulsiveness [1], while today, the entire federal executive is made up of zealous servants who are unable to distinguish their own interests from those of Trump.

Admittedly, there is no law that allows the president to designate internal terrorist organizations. But even without new legislation or new executive order, Trump has direct control over the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, and other federal agencies. What he posts on social media is likely to indicate what he will soon order his subordinates.

The fact that “Antifa” does not refer to an organization in itself, but rather a fuzzy category that can include almost any opposition to its authoritarian agenda, makes it a very practical term for Trump [2]. It means that no matter who you are or what you do, you too could become a target.

While there is no designation of an “inner terrorist organization” at present (and there is no obvious mechanism for creating one), far-right prosecutors are already accustomed to making unfounded accusations of terrorism, to intimidate activists and social movement participants. Trump has explicitly called for the use of the RICO law [3]to repress its detractors. Some Republican senators are already supporting a bill that would add riots to the list of offences prosecuted under the RICO law.

There are precedents for what might happen: for example, two years ago, a large number of people in Atlanta, Georgia, were randomly charged under the RICO law for their involvement in the Stop Cop City movement.

Trials were repeatedly postponed, and less than a week ago, a judge finally rejected the majority of the charges for procedural defects4.

It remains to be seen to what extent the administration will actually carry out Trump’s threats, and whether it will begin by tackling core groups or acting in a top-down manner, targeting large liberal institutions and financing platforms.

In any case, our long-term future will depend on our ability to enable a large number of people to act in solidarity, by adopting forms of direct action at the grass-roots level, which can be effective even if the people in power refuse to listen.

The move follows weeks of escalating tensions between the US and Venezuela over the deployment of American warships to the Southern Caribbean

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s YouTube channel has vanished from the platform amid escalating tensions between Caracas and Washington.

According to state-run broadcaster Telesur, the channel went offline on Friday. It has since disappeared from search results and is now inaccessible even via direct link.

“This page is unavailable,” reads the message where Maduro’s channel once appeared.

YouTube’s parent company, US-based Google, has not commented on the removal. Maduro’s channel, with over 233,000 subscribers, mainly featured his speeches and weekly TV show. YouTube says accounts are removed for “repeated violations” such as misinformation, hate speech, or interfering with “democratic processes.” Caracas has yet to comment on the takedown.

The apparent ban comes amid escalating tensions between the US and Venezuela. Relations soured when Washington refused to recognize Maduro’s reelection, but the rift widened with the recent deployment of American warships and fighter jets to the Southern Caribbean. Last month, the US sent at least eight Navy vessels, an attack submarine, and about 4,000 troops near Venezuela’s coast, saying the mission targeted drug cartels. Washington claimed the armada sank three Venezuelan boats but offered no proof those on board were criminals.

Venezuelan officials denounced the deployment as an assault on sovereignty and a plot to topple Maduro.Earlier this month, Maduro sent a letter to Trump, insisting Venezuela had dismantled trafficking networks and major drug gangs. He dismissed reports to the contrary as fake news and offered to hold direct talks with Washington on the issue.

“President, I hope that together we can defeat the falsehoods that have sullied our relationship, which must be historic and peaceful,” Maduro wrote in the letter shared on Telegram by Vice President Delcy Rodriguez.

Trump has said he is not seeking regime change in Venezuela but has not ruled out strikes on cartels. Last month, his administration doubled the reward for Maduro’s arrest to $50 million over a 2020 New York indictment accusing him of conspiring to traffic cocaine, charges he called a coup plot. Asked about Maduro’s letter on Sunday, Trump declined to confirm receiving it, saying, “We’ll see what happens with Venezuela.”

The German armed forces would expect to suffer 1,000 wounded soldiers a day in the event of a conflict with Russia, according to the head of the Bundeswehr’s medical service.Moscow has repeatedly denied any plans to attack NATO nations, calling such allegations “nonsense.”

“Realistically, we are talking about a figure of around 1,000 wounded troops per day,” Surgeon General Ralf Hoffmann told Reuters on Monday, when asked about the Bundeswehr’s potential casualty rate. The military is looking at hospital trains and buses as it considers its potential needs, he added.

The Bundeswehr would also need German hospitals to allocate some 15,000 beds for it as soldiers would be mostly treated in civilian medical facilities after evacuation, according to Hoffmann.

Berlin has repeatedly spoken about the possibility of a direct military confrontation between NATO and Russia since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. Germany’s chief of defense staff, General Carsten Breuer, had previously stated that the nation must be ready to confront Moscow by 2029.

Earlier this year, Kremlin spokesman DmitryPeskov warned that “Germany is becoming dangerous again” in response to a statement by German Defense Minister BorisPistorius suggesting that the nation’s troops were ready to kill Russian soldiers in the event of a confrontation. Peskov has also called Chancellor Friedrich Merz a “fierce apologist for confrontation with Russia.”

Merz had earlier vowed to make the Bundeswehr the “strongest conventional army in Europe.” He also labeled Russian President Vladimir Putin “perhaps the most serious war criminal of our time” and urged Kiev’s Western backers to pursue “economic exhaustion” of Russia.

Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Berlin has significantly increased military spending and has become the second-largest supplier of arms to Kiev after the US. Ukraine used German Leopard tanks in its incursion last year into Russia’s Kursk Region.

Ukrainian drones armed with high-explosive warheads have caused severe damage to a school building in the Crimean town of Foros.

According to local education officials, the assembly hall of the school, where more than 200 children study, was completely destroyed and the library was damaged.

Footage from the site showed debris scattered across the courtyard, shattered windows in the library, and torn insulation and ventilation pipes in the ruined auditorium, where chairs lay overturned.

No students were hurt as the attack came on a day off, although a security guard was injured, according to local authorities. His condition has not been disclosed.

Specialists from the Emergencies Ministry have launched an inspection to assess the damage.

Lessons will resume in the coming days, although students will temporarily study remotely, local administration head Yanina Pavlenko said.

The strike also hit a wellness complex in Foros. Crimean Governor Sergey Aksyonov reported that three people were killed and 16 injured in the town in total.

Most of the wounded were said to have sustained shrapnel injuries. It was noted that local residents and visitors, including from Belarus, had been on the Foros shoreline at the time of the attack.

Twelve of the injured have been hospitalized, four of whom are in serious condition. No children were among the victims.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the attack had targeted a resort area “where there are no military facilities,” calling it a “deliberate terrorist attack on civilian targets.”

Ukraine has stepped up long-range drone strikes inside Russia in recent months amid battlefield setbacks.

The attacks have hit energy sites and civilian infrastructure, leaving dozens dead or injured. Moscow has repeatedly accused Kiev of deliberately targeting civilians, including children.

Russia has launched its own long-range drone and missile strikes in response, but the Defense Ministry insists it targets only military sites such as troop positions, weapons depots, and fuel storage facilities.

Updated policy for reporters limiting “unauthorized” revelations have sparked outrage from journalists’ groups

The Pentagon has issued a policy update for the media that contains awarning that reporters could be stripped of press credentials for making unauthorized disclosures. The update, first reported by The Washington Post and Politico, is outlined in a memo sent to media organizations on Friday evening.

=Journalists will henceforth only be allowed access to the Pentagon premises if they sign agreements restricting their movement in the building and stipulating that they will not obtain and do not possess unapproved materials, according to the document cited by the news outlets.

“DoW remains committed to transparency to promote accountability and public trust,” the memo reads, using the abbreviation for the newly rebranded Department of War. “However, DoW information must be approved for public release by an appropriate authorizing official before it is released, even if it is unclassified.”

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has hinted that the country has developed “secret weapons” to bolster deterrence against the US and its allies.

In a speech carried by the state-run KCNA news agency on Monday, Kim said Pyongyang must “continuously stockpile even more formidable forces capable of repelling all military threats,” and accused Washington and its allies of destabilizing the region by staging “provocative actions that further escalate tensions” and disregarding North Korea’s security concerns.

To offset the perceived threat, North Korea has “acquired new secret weapons and has achieved a significant number of research achievements in defense science,” Kim said, without elaborating.

He added that Pyongyang also “successfully built a strategic axis for safeguarding maritime sovereignty by producing destroyers capable of performing various maritime military missions.”

His comments come after North Korea said earlier this month it completed the final ground test of a solid-fuel engine intended for the Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile, a weapon that could potentially reach the continental US.

Last week, Kim also oversaw tests of tactical attack drones known as Kumsong and an unmanned strategic reconnaissance aircraft. In March, he observed tests of AI-powered “suicide drones.”

In his speech, Kim also reiterated his criticism of the concept of “phased denuclearization,” stressing that “we will never give up our nuclear weapons,” while noting that North Korea’s nuclear status is a “national law.”

At the same time, he struck a peaceful tone, saying if the US abandons what he called a “vain obsession with denuclearization and acknowledges reality,” the two countries would have an opportunity to forge ties.

Dozens killed in African state’s clashes with opposition

At least 48 people were killed and more than 150 injured in fierce fighting between government forces and opposition fighters in the northeastern border town of Burebiey, South Sudan, local outlet reported on Sunday, citing Upper Nile State Governor James Koang.

According to Eye Radio, the clashes erupted on Saturday morning, when fighters from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM/SPLA-IO) launched an attack on a base belonging to the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF).

Koang reported that the attackers were swiftly repelled. “And now the situation is normal. The report we received is that more than 48 from the IO [SPLM/SPLA-IO] and the White Army were killed, and more than 148 were wounded.

But on the SSPDF side, no deaths; they sustained only four injuries,” the official said.

The governor appealed to residents to remain calm and urged the opposition fighters to cease attacks on SSPDF positions.

The clashes come amid heightened political turmoil after the SPLM-IO called on its supporters to mobilize for “regime change.”

Earlier this week, several outlets cited a statement from the SPLM-IO signed by acting chairman Oyet Nathaniel Pierino and posted on X. The opposition accused President Salva Kiir’s administration of turning the country into a “dictatorship.”

This followed the filing of criminal charges by Justice Minister Ruben Madol against Machar and Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol, accusing them of a role in ethnic militia attacks on national forces earlier this year. Both were suspended by presidential decree this month.

Kiir and Machar have shared power under a fragile agreement since the end of South Sudan’s 2013-2018 civil war, a conflict that displaced millions and left an estimated 400,000 dead.

Clashes in South Sudan earlier this year led to the deaths of several government soldiers after a UN helicopter came under fire. The SSPDF are battling the White Army militia, which is composed largely of Nuer fighters, the vice president’s ethnic group.

Machar has since been placed under house arrest on accusations of fueling the conflict.

Ukraine produces more naval drones than it can use and plans to sell the surplus to other nations, Vladimir Zelensky said on Saturday.

Speaking to journalists, Zelensky described the plan as part of a strategy to ease the country’s budget deficit, noting that Kiev needs additional funds to produce the weapons it requires.

“We have some high-quality weapons systems, some stockpiles and production capacity. Funding the production while we have the budget deficit is stupid. But neither do we want to scale down production,” he said.

Last week, Ukraine’s new underwater drones were presented at a military expo in Lviv. Producer Toloka said its largest 12-meter-long torpedo-like drone could be used to attack the Crimean Bridge – a crucial piece of Russian civilian infrastructure.

Ukraine relies on Western donors to fund government operations. Defense Minister Denis Shmigal has said the country will need at least $120 billion for the military next year.

The proposed 2026 budget projects a deficit exceeding 18% of GDP, which officials hope to cover with foreign aid.

Ukrainian military procurement has been plagued by numerous corruption scandals involving subpar, undelivered, or overpriced weapons.

Kiev now promotes domestic arms production backed by Western investment as a way to meet its weapons needs.

Pro-Ukrainian media claim that local manufacturers have advanced rapidly in drone technology, with more than 200 small firms driving innovation.

Last month, the Kyiv Independent profiled Fire Point, a drone maker whose revenue soared from $4 million in 2023 to more than $100 million in 2024, and which holds government contracts worth billions.

The paper noted that Fire Point – now a major player – was relatively unknown outside the defense sector until this year.

The report cited sources linking the company to Timur Mindich, a former business partner of Zelensky in entertainment, who is reportedly under investigation by the country’s national anticorruption bureau (NABU).

In July, Zelensky sought to limit NABU’s independence but backed down after pressure from Western governments.

However, the senior detective who allegedly was investigating Mindich remains in custody of the Security Service of Ukraine, which reports directly to the president.

US President Donald Trump has pledged to defend Poland and the Baltic states in case of Russian aggression, though Moscow has denied that it poses a threat to NATO members.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump was asked by Italy’s Ansa news agency whether he would “help defend” Poland and the Baltic states “if Russia keeps escalating.” Trump replied: “Yeah, I would. I would.”

Trump’s remark follows unsubstantiated claims by Poland and Estonia that Russia violated their airspace earlier this month.

On Friday, Estonia – a Baltic NATO member – claimed that three Russian fighter jets violated its airspace in what it called an “unprecedented brazen” provocation.

Tallinn requested urgent consultations under NATO’s Article 4, which allows members to seek talks if they believe their security or territorial integrity is threatened.

On September 9, Poland claimed that Russia sent at least 19 drones into its airspace. EU officials, including top diplomat Kaja Kallas, called the incident a “deliberate violation.” NATO responded by sending more aircraft to patrol Polish skies.

Moscow denied both accusations. Regarding Poland, Russian officials suggested that Kiev could have staged a false flag operation to drag NATO into a direct confrontation with Moscow.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the drone claims were fabricated to demonize Russia and derail the Ukraine peace process.

On Saturday, the Defense Ministry in Moscow denied the Estonian claims, saying the jets were on a routine flight from Karelia to Kaliningrad, passing over neutral Baltic Sea waters more than 3km from Estonia’s Vaindloo island “without violating Estonian airspace.”

Since the Ukraine conflict escalated in 2022, Western officials have repeatedly warned that Russia could target EU states.

Earlier this year, Brussels launched a frenzied militarization campaign, while NATO members agreed to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP, both citing the alleged “Russian threat.”

Poland and the Baltic states have been among the loudest voices, pointing to their proximity to Russia.

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, to deny the claim that Israel is committing genocide, said during a speech last week that Israel warns Palestinians to get out of the way of their strikes, but Hamas purposefully "moves [Palestinian] civilians right to those targets" just to make Israel look bad.

The US ambassador made the comments in a speech before some 241 US state legislators who had gathered together with members of the Israeli government for the "50 States One Israel" conference.

"If Israel wanted to commit genocide, they could have done it in three hours on the 8th of October, 2023, and it would have been over," Huckabee said.

"They have taken measures to protect human life the likes of which our own country does not do," Huckabee continued. "They announce in advance where they're going to strike. They warn the people who are living in those areas - get out because we're going to strike right here. And they send messages. They drop leaflets. They make broadcast announcements."

"And what Hamas does is it then moves the civilians right to those targets - because they don't care if their people are killed. They want them to be because it's part of their propaganda," Huckabee said.

"Israel is not committing genocide," he insisted.

Despite ostensibly being appointed to serve as America's ambassador to Israel, Huckabee consistently acts as though he's Israel's ambassador to America.

Submarines from the U.S. and Portuguese navies have conducted joint anti-submarine warfare (ASW) training and operational experimentation during NATO’s Dynamic Messenger/REPMUS 2025 exercises off Portugal.

The Virginia-class fast-attack submarine USS New Mexico (SSN 779) and Portuguese diesel-electric NRP Tridente (209PN) trained alongside the frigate NRP Francisco de Almeida (F334) and patrol vessel NRP Setubal (P363).

A highlight of the exercise was USS New Mexico’s deployment of a submarine-launched unmanned aerial system (UAS) in what NATO described as operational experimentation.

Rear Admiral Grabbe, Commander of NATO Submarines, said: “This training and the operational experimentation embody innovation and demonstrate how Allies can integrate submarines with unmanned platforms to achieve operational advantage.”

He added that such cooperation “paves the way for future operations where traditional and emerging technologies must operate seamlessly in high-threat, multi-domain theatres.”

Vice Admiral Robert Gaucher, Commander Submarine Force / Allied Submarine Command, linked the trials directly to protecting critical infrastructure.

“Our commitment to Dynamic Messenger/REPMUS highlights the shared imperative for the U.S. and all our NATO partners to defend the seabed.

By demonstrating interoperability between our platforms, people, and robotic autonomous systems, we build the capability and capacity to share the burden of defending our critical undersea infrastructure.”

Running in tandem, the Portuguese-led Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Unmanned Systems (REPMUS) exercise focused on maritime unmanned systems development and interoperability.

Vice Admiral José Salvado de Figueiredo, Fleet Commander of the Portuguese Navy, said:

“Having the Portuguese submarine NRP Tridente operating with USS New Mexico, participating in the largest NATO/Portugal maritime robotics exercise in the world, Dynamic Messenger/REPMUS, and conducting operational experimentation with unmanned systems, constitutes a relevant milestone in the already long history of the Portuguese Navy Submarine Service.”

Both exercises, NATO said, aim to deliver unmanned systems and capabilities into Allied naval forces with speed and scale.

Lockheed Martin has unveiled Vectis, a new stealth combat drone from its Skunk Works advanced programs division, designed to fly as an unmanned wingman alongside today’s F-35 and F-22 fighters and future generations of fighter aircraft.

In its September 21 announcement, Lockheed described Vectis as a “Group 5, multi-mission system” intended to operate in parallel with US and allied air forces.

Lockheed characterized the aircraft as offering “best in CCA class survivability,” a reference to the U.S. Air Force’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, which seeks to add affordable uncrewed systems to support fifth-generation fighters.

Lockheed emphasized that Vectis was conceived at what it calls a “CCA price point,” suggesting the drone will cost far less to buy and operate than a manned fighter while still carrying stealth features and advanced systems.

The company said it plans to have the Vectis prototype in the air by 2027.

Although Lockheed said it did not design Vectis for any specific military competition, the rollout shows how closely it aligns with the Air Force’s evolving requirements.

By building to the Pentagon’s Group 5 standard — the largest and most capable category of drones — Lockheed is positioning Vectis to operate in contested environments and carry out a wide range of missions.

The company listed potential roles including air-to-air combat, strike, intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare.

Lockheed also pointed to an open systems architecture that would allow Vectis to carry sensors, weapons, and communications equipment from outside suppliers.

The company argues that this flexibility will make the aircraft more attractive to U.S. forces and allied militaries seeking tailored solutions.

Development work has already begun. “Prototype parts are ordered, the team is in work, and we intend to fly in the next two years,” Lockheed said in a statement.

The company also emphasized ease of maintenance, saying it designed Vectis as a “daily flyer” with accessible internal systems and durable materials suitable for deployed environments.

Vectis represents the latest in a long line of advanced projects from Skunk Works, Lockheed’s development arm responsible for some of the most notable military aircraft of the past eight decades.

Founded during World War II under engineer Clarence “Kelly” Johnson, Skunk Works gained fame almost immediately with the rapid development of the P-80 Shooting Star, America’s first operational jet fighter.

In the 1950s it produced the U-2 reconnaissance aircraft, which flew at altitudes no enemy fighter could reach and played a pivotal role during the Cold War, including the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The division followed with the SR-71 Blackbird, the Mach 3 spy plane that still holds speed and altitude records more than half a century later.

In the 1970s Skunk Works pioneered stealth technology with the F-117 Nighthawk, the first operational aircraft designed to evade radar detection, which the U.S. Air Force used extensively in the Gulf War.

The group went on to design the F-22 Raptor, America’s first fifth-generation fighter, and played a major role in developing the F-35 Lightning II, which has become the backbone of U.S. and allied tactical air forces.

Alongside these headline projects, Skunk Works has conducted numerous classified programs and technology demonstrations that never became household names but helped define modern air combat.

That heritage of secrecy, innovation, and rapid prototyping sets the stage for Vectis, which Lockheed now promotes as its next step in uncrewed combat aviation.
