Up from the Earth: Gigantic Jet Lightning

What's that rising up from the Earth? When circling the Earth on the International Space Station early in July, astronaut Nicole Ayers saw an unusual type of lightning rising up from the Earth: a gigantic jet. The powerful jet appears near the center of the featured image in red, white, and blue. Giant jet lightning has only been known about for the past 25 years. The atmospheric jets are associated with thunderstorms and extend upwards towards Earth's ionosphere. The lower part of the frame shows the Earth at night, with Earth's thin atmosphere tinted green from airglow. City lights are visible, sometimes resolved, but usually creating diffuse white glows in intervening clouds. The top of the frame reveals distant stars in the dark night sky. The nature of gigantic jets and their possible association with other types of Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) such as blue jets and red sprites remain active topics of research.

Mynett’s other company, Rose Lake Capital, was in no better shape at the beginning of 2024. The venture capital firm wasworth no more than $1,000 to Mynett at the end of 2023, Omar disclosed, and had just $42.44 in its bankaccounts in February 2024, according to court documents obtained by the Minnesota Reformer.

By the end of 2024, Mynett’s stake in Rose Lake Capital ballooned to up to $25 million, Omar reported in her latest financial disclosure.

Mynett and Hailer formed Rose Lake Capital in 2022.It claims on its website to have $60 billion in assets under management and boasts an "extensive global network" and expertise at structuring "legislation." The firm’s advisory board includestwo former Barack Obama ambassadors, Max Baucus and J. Adam Ereli, as well as former Amalgamated Bank CEO Keith Mestrich.

Shortly after Mynett launched Rose Lake Capital, Omar formed the U.S.-Africa Policy Working Group, where she leads a group of 20 members of Congress"committed to building partnership with the continent of Africa."

Since then, both Omar and Mynett have been pictured at events hosted by the EBII Group, a company that helps facilitate international investments in Africa. Israeli airstrike kills Houthi rebel prime minister in Sanaa

CAIRO (AP) — The Iranian-backed Houthis said Saturday an Israeli airstrike killed the prime minister of the rebel-controlled government in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.

Ahmed al-Rahawi was killed in along with a number of ministers, the rebels said in a statement.

The Israeli military said Thursday that it “precisely struck a Houthi terrorist regime military target in the area of Sanaa in Yemen.”

Al-Rahawi, who served as prime minister to the Houthi-led government since August 2024, was targeted along with other members of his Houthi-controlled government during a routine workshop held by the government to evaluate its activities and performance over the past year, the rebels’ statement said.

The Houthis have repeatedly launched missiles against Israel throughout Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. The group says the attacks are in solidarity with the Palestinians. Though most of the missiles launched by Yemen are intercepted by Israel, or fragment mid-air, this has done little to deter the attacks.

Earlier in the week, Israeli strikes hit multiple areas across Sanaa, killing at least 10 people and wounding 102 others, according to the Houthi-run health ministry and government officials.

The Houthis have launched missiles and drones toward Israel and targeted ships in the Red Sea throughout Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. The rebels say their attacks are in solidarity with the Palestinians.

Republican lawmakers on Tuesday marked the fourth anniversary of the deadly Abbey Gate bombing by honoring the 13 fallen service members while demanding accountability for what they called former President Joe Biden’s “reckless withdrawal from Afghanistan,” which led to the “tragic but preventable attack,” with multiple members vowing to “never let him off the hook for his utter failure as Commander-in-Chief.”

President Donald Trump on Monday signed a proclamation declaring August 26, 2025, as a day of remembrance for the Abbey Gate victims, flanked by Gold Star families as he blasted the Biden administration’s chaotic withdrawal. “This is a very special group of people. I’ve been with them from the beginning, Abby Gate,” Trump said, calling August 26, 2021, “one of the dumbest days in our nation’s history.”

Trump said the administration should have kept Bagram Airfield and withdrawn from there rather than the vulnerable Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. “At a minimum, they should have been at Bagram, the big field where we have hundreds of acres around it. Nobody’s going to get near it. They left from a small airfield, and the consequences were horrible,” Trump said at the ceremony, joined by Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee issued a statement underscoring accountability, stating, “Bad policies have consequences. Four years ago today, President Biden’s failed withdrawal from Afghanistan resulted in the tragic but preventable bombing attack at the Abbey Gate, robbing us of our thirteen young men and women in uniform.

We will never forget the names of these brave servicemembers gone too early.”

Chairman Brian Mast (R-FL) and Chairman Emeritus Michael McCaul (R-TX) both honored the fallen by name. McCaul connected the tragedy to his oversight work, saying,“This tragedy didn’t have to happen. As my 2024 report into the Afghanistan withdrawal revealed, the Biden admin prioritized optics over security at every step of the way — putting servicemembers, State Department employees, and innocent Afghans in mortal danger. While we remember and mourn those who died on that tragic day,we must also continue working toward answers and accountabilityto ensure this never happens again.”

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) honored Navy Hospital Corpsman Third Class Maxton Soviak, writing, “It’s been four years since Max Soviak paid the ultimate sacrifice for his country at the Abbey Gate in Kabul, Afghanistan. We will never forget his service. God Bless him and his family.”

Toronto police say 8-year-old Jahvai Roy has died after being hit by a stray bullet while he was lying in bed.

Police say the incident happened just before 12:30 a.m. in an apartment building on Martha Eaton Way and Trethewey Drive on Aug. 16.

Officers responded to a call of gunfire in the area, Toronto Police Service (TPS) Det. Sgt. Jason Davis said during an Aug. 16 news conference.

“Officers responded and located an 8-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound,” he said.

Davis said the officers immediately began life-saving measures, along with Toronto Fire and Toronto paramedics.

IDF Plans to Capture Gaza City, Prepares Construction of Field Hospitals for Evacuated Civilians

Monday, 18 August 2025 08:18 AM EDT

While the Israeli military continues to firm up plans for the capture of Gaza City, the IDF is also reportedly preparing to expand humanitarian support in other parts of Gaza, including building additional field hospitals ahead of mass civilian evacuations.

According to a Monday report in Ynet News, the military intends to establish more humanitarian zones and medical facilities to bolster international legitimacy for the planned offensive against remaining Hamas forces.

Previous field hospitals in the Gaza Strip were facilitated by the IDF, many of them built and operated by the United Arab Emirates.

According to the Ynet report, the IDF is currently conducting an assessment of the requirements and feasibility of the plan, which is awaiting approval from the political echelon.

On Saturday evening, reports in Hebrew media indicated the military had resumed allowing tents and other shelter equipment into the Gaza Strip in preparation for the planned evacuation of Gaza City's civilian population.

By Sunday afternoon, social media posts showed trucks loaded with tents waiting to enter the Strip.

The entry of renewed aid comes as IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said he approved plans for the takeover of Gaza City and is expected to present them to Defense Minister Israel Katz for final approval on Tuesday.

MSNBC will change its name later this year and drop the storied peacock image from its branding — the first real public-facing changes in Versant’s upcoming separation from Comcast’s NBCUniversal.

The political news network will be renamed My Source News Opinion World, or MS Now, Versant Chief Executive Officer Mark Lazarus wrote in an internal memo to employees that was seen by CNBC.

In January, Lazarus told a group of MSNBC staffers that the network wouldn’t change its name. But during the past few months of transition planning, NBCUniversal leaders decided MSNBC should take on a new name “to accelerate the distinction between the MSNBC and NBC News organizations,” Lazarus wrote in the memo Monday.

MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler added in her own note to employees that the news group’s focus won’t change.

“While our name will be changing, who we are and what we do will not. Our commitment to our work and our audiences will not waiver from what the brand promise has been for three decades,” she wrote.

The Eagle, Globe, and Anchor is the official emblem of the United States Marine Corps. The Vatican is facing allegations it used a "skeleton key for money laundering" by illegally manipulating bank transfers.

The City-State's former top financial cop ― Libero Milone, who was forced out in 2017 ― has claimed that its payroll agency was able to alter the names and account numbers on transactions after they were made, masking the identity of recipients and senders.

The implication would be enormous because it would have made it possible for Vatican officials to wire funds to private clients without revealing who they were, possibly enabling unlimited money laundering and violating the most basic anti-fraud rules.

The Pillar, a Catholic website, followed up with a series of articles signaling that Milone was sitting on a pile of potentially explosive material on practices uncovered during his time at the Vatican and was considering whether to deploy it to bolster his case.

Describing the IBAN editing tool as a "skeleton key for money laundering," The Pillar said that if proven, "the Vatican would likely end up on an international financial black list of the darkest kind, frozen out of the international banking system, meaning no money could come in or out of the City-State except in literal, physical cash."
