FBI arrests 24, indicts 33 in massive drug raid on Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood

This is the largest indictment brought in a century in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

The FBI carried out a raid in the drug and crime ridden neighborhood of Kensington in Philadelphia on Friday, indicting 33 people and arresting 24. The neighborhood has long been a haven for drug dealers and users and this is the largest indictment brought in a century in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

The Weymouth Street Drug Trafficking Organization was targeted by the FBI and the 24 were arrested after search warrants were executed. US Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania David Metcalf said that the conspiracy has spanned about a decade and that "tremendous" volumes of drugs, including fentanyl and other narcotics, were involved, per ABC.

"We have permanently removed a drug trafficking organization out of the streets of Philadelphia, and they're going to stop pouring guns and chemicals and drugs into our communities," FBI Director Kash Patel said. "And our children are safer today."

"And like a precision missile, it has been targeted for maximum impact where it needed to go... the heart of the opioid scourge here in Kensington," Metcalf said. In addition to drugs, many firearms were seized.

Alleged ringleader Jose Antonio Morales Nieves, 45, aka "Flaco," allowed dealers to do their business on "his block" in exchange for kickbacks, known as "rent." Morales Nieves is from Puerto Rico and was arrested.

Ramon Roman-Montanez, known as "Viejo," was also arrested and was conducting street-level operations. Roman-Montanez is from Philadelphia. Nancy Rios-Valentin, 33, was allegedly organizing a schedule as to when people could peddle their goods and she also handled the proceeds from the operation.

"The vast majority of our actions were concentrated right here in Kensington, where this organization devastated the community, fueled violence and spread fear among residents for nearly a decade," said FBI Special Agent in Charge of the Philadelphia office Wayne Jacobs.

"Morales Nieves helps protect the members of the DTO through the threat of violent acts," Metcalf said, "performed either by himself or his associates, against others who have caused the Weymouth DTO harm or attempted to sell controlled substances in the DTO's territory."

"This indictment alleges that the Weymouth Street drug trafficking organization, for nearly a decade, sold and distributed substantial volumes of fentanyl, crack cocaine, cocaine and heroin, mostly in the 3100 block of Weymouth Street. They made their living in one of the most notorious and prolific segments of an open-air drug market here in Kensington," Metcalf said.

WASHINGTON - Former Vice President Kamala Harris still isn't ruling out another presidential run.

Before offering some of her strongest hints yet that she may be reconsidering a White House bid, the Democrats' 2024 White House nominee was asked in an interview this week whether the first woman president could be her – even after losing last year to President Donald Trump.

"Possibly," she told the BBC, adding, "I am not done. I have lived my entire career a life of service, and it's in my bones."

The 61-year old who made history as the country's first female, Black and Asian-American vice president hedged her suggestion with a few caveats, though, stressing that she has not yet decided what her own political future holds.

"There are many ways to serve," she said.

Harris considered a run for governor in her home state of California in 2026. But she closed that door – and left another one open for the 2028 presidential contest – in July. Her decision not to enter the gubernatorial campaign effectively kickstarted the potentially crowded Democratic primary to succeed Trump in three years.

Yet after a bruising loss last year, the former vice president would have an uphill battle ahead of her to regain support within her party and among voters across the country. A POLITICO poll conducted over the summer showed California Democrats would slightly prefer Gavin Newsom, their current governor, over Harris in a presidential contest.

"There are all kinds of polls that will tell you a variety of things," Harris told the BBC. "I've never listened to polls."

A proposal that would have made it illegal to create or possess AI-generated child sexual abuse material failed to advance Thursday after a split vote by Maine’s Legislative Council.

The measure, titled “An Act to Make Artificial Intelligence-Generated Child Pornography Illegal,” was introduced by Rep. Amy Roeder (D-Bangor). The bill sought to update state law to address the growing use of artificial intelligence to fabricate exploitative images of minors.

During Thursday’s meeting, the council — made up of legislative leaders from both parties — voted 5-5 on whether to allow the bill into the upcoming session, which meant the measure was rejected.

All four Republican members of the council and one Democrat, Rep. Lori Gramlich (D-Old Orchard Beach), supported advancing the bill. The remaining Democrats, including House Speaker Ryan Fecteau (D-Biddeford), voted against it.

Senate Minority Leader Trey Stewart (R-Aroostook) sharply criticized Democrats following the vote, arguing that lawmakers should prioritize protecting children from AI-driven sexual exploitation.

“It’s pretty insane to me that they’d prioritize naming bridges and roads over protecting kids from having their lives ripped apart by pedophiles with AI,” Stewart said in a statement.

The proposal’s defeat means it will not be taken up during the second regular session of the 132nd Legislature. However, the issue of how to regulate AI-generated sexual content, particularly when it involves minors, is expected to remain a subject of debate in Augusta as lawmakers consider broader updates to Maine’s digital privacy and criminal laws.

October 25, 1854: During the Battle of Balaclava in the Crimean War, the Charge of the Light Brigade took place. Due to a miscommunication, the British cavalry, led by Lord Cardigan, mistakenly charged into a heavily defended Russian artillery position. The brigade faced intense fire from three sides in a long, exposed valley. Of the approximately 670 cavalrymen, around 110 were killed, 160 wounded, and many were captured.

English poet Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote "The Charge of the Light Brigade" in December 1854, one of his most famous works. I’ve included the first stanza below.

Convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein asked Prince Andrew to arrange a dinner with the attractive daughter of the former Australian prime minister, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.

In an email dated February 16, 2011 – part of The Epstein Files currently being reviewed by the US Congress – Epstein wrote to Andrew saying: 'Would you ask Katherine Keating if she would like to come for dinner with Woody Allen next week in New York?' to which the prince replied: 'Will do.'

Two days later, on the eve of Andrew's 51st birthday, Epstein wrote: 'What will you do tomorrow? Sorry I cannot be there as you get older.'

Andrew responded: 'Having a very quiet day. But a dinner party in the evening. On the Keating case.'

Socialite Ms Keating, who was 29 at the time, is the daughter of Paul Keating, the Australian PM from 1991 to 1996 who was dubbed 'The Lizard of Oz' in 1992 when he placed his arm around Queen Elizabeth.

Ms Keating confirmed Andrew 'fixed' her 2011 dinner with Epstein.

Addressing her links to Epstein for the first time she told the MoS: 'I did attend a February dinner at Andrew's invitation – a large social event.'

The brunette was famously photographed waving goodbye to Andrew two months earlier when he stayed at Epstein's New York mansion and the financier hosted another dinner.

It is not known how Ms Keating came into Andrew's orbit.

Some reports have suggested she was friends with Andrew's friend and Epstein's 'madam' Ghislaine Maxwell, currently serving 20 years for sex trafficking.

A popular influencer and YouTube creator known as “Mr. Crafty Pants” was busted for allegedly possessing and trading disturbing sexual images of children on social media, according to reports.

Michael David Booth — who has nearly 600,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel featuring arts and crafts tutorials with smart cutting machines — was arrested Wednesday in Kentucky after repeatedly sharing the sickening images on the social media messaging app Kik, Wave News reported.

The twisted online personality allegedly possessed six explicit photos — three showing children under the age of 12 and the others depicting teens — which he shared more than 15 times with other users between Aug. 4 and Aug. 7, according to an arrest report obtained by the outlet.

Police said they launched their probe into the depraved 39-year-old in August after the social app flagged his account, which was traced to an IP address linked to Booth’s Norton Commons home.

Booth was charged with possession and distribution of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor, according to the local station, which cited sources as alerting them to his online persona.

The accused predator — who last posted a video to his YouTube channel four months ago and his Facebook on Tuesday — was arraigned on Thursday, with bond reportedly set at $150,000.

Scientists reveal all the strange behaviors of interstellar visitor 3I/ATLAS that deepen the mystery of its origins

The interstellar object traveling through our solar system has just made its most startling move yet, appearing to reverse thrust as it disappeared behind our sun.

It's the latest in a growing list of puzzling clues that some scientists have claimed prove that the object dubbed 3I/ATLAS is not just an ordinary comet from a distant solar system.

Harvard physicist Avi Loeb has been among the leading voices maintaining that there is enough evidence to say 3I/ATLAS has shown signs of being guided by an unknown intelligence.

The next clue could emerge on October 29, when the object is projected to reach its closest point to the sun.

Loeb told the Daily Mail that if 3I/ATLAS comes out of this blind spot in a completely different place than gravity was taking it, it would be a clear sign the object was artificial and likely powered by some kind of engine.

Most astronomers have been reluctant to consider the possibility of an extraterrestrial origin, noting that the space rock has shown the classic signs of being a comet, including having a tail and a coma, a large cloud of gas and dust surrounding it.

Previous studies throughout the summer have concluded that 3I/ATLAS's strange chemical makeup, rich in carbon dioxide gas, is merely a result of forming in a solar system completely foreign to our own.

However, Loeb contends that those in the scientific community who have dismissed the more extraordinary possibilities are more concerned with being right and avoiding criticism than alerting the public to a potentially world-changing event.

'Here we are talking about a potential for something that could affect humanity in the future in a dramatic way, and so you shouldn't apply the same approach of being as conservative as possible,' Loeb explained.

'I don't want to be their therapist, but they're trying to obviously protect their reputation, not take risks, and also pretend that they know the answer in advance,' he added.

Daily Mail reached out to several scientists who have been studying the alleged comet, but did not receive a response to our request to comment on the latest findings.

A study in August detected an unusual nickel plume from the object. Unlike natural comets, which always emit nickel alongside iron, 3I/ATLAS showed the metallic element without any detectable iron.

The new study, published by astrophysicists in Chile, found that 3I/ATLAS is shedding nickel at roughly five grams per second and cyanide at 20 grams per second, with both rising sharply as the object moves closer to the sun.

Researchers noted that the mechanisms driving these emissions are not typical of natural cometary processes.

Scans of 3I/ATLAS, released the same month, suggested it is likely an unusual comet that's much smaller than it previously appeared and is unexpectedly releasing loads of carbon dioxide gas (CO2).

The large amount of CO2 pouring out, about 940 trillion molecules per second, was a major finding, suggesting 3I/ATLAS formed in a star system that doesn't look anything like ours, where comets are much different than the ones we see orbiting our sun.

Based on all the light coming from 3I/ATLAS, scientists originally suspected the object was more than 12 miles in diameter/ However, NASA's most powerful telescopes have cut that estimate down to 1.7 miles.

The comet seemed larger because over 99 percent of the light observed came from a large, bright cloud of dust and gas surrounding it, called a coma. 3I/ATLAS is currently about 298 million miles from Earth.

Not only is the interstellar object much smaller, but a new study by NASA's SPHEREx telescope discovered that 3I/ATLAS is releasing a large amount of CO2 and is covered in water ice.

This month, NASA's Perseverance rover on the Martian surface sent back photos of the object, showing what appears to be a massive cylindrical shape.

Stargazers on social media shared color-enhanced images of the object, dubbed 3I/ATLAS, which showed the interstellar visitor having a green glow as it passed Mars and heads closer to the sun.

Loeb analyzed the Perseverance rover's photos by calculating its distance, speed, and camera settings.

The First Interstellar Car in NASCAR’s History

On October 25, 2025, I attended the NASCAR car race in Bakersfield, California.

The racers were all ecstatic about the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS because of its high speed of 68 kilometers per second on its approach to perihelion on October 29, 2025.

3I/ATLAS is 600 times faster than the best of these cars.

One of the qualified NASCAR racers, Alex Malycke, was so impressed by the 8 anomalies of 3I/ATLAS described in my research (summarized here), that he chose to feature images of me and 3I/ATLAS on the hood of his car.

He labeled it the first “interstellar car” in NASCAR’s history.

On January 2, 2025, the Minor Planet Center catalogued a new near-Earth asteroid, only to realize a day later that it is the Tesla Roadster car launched by SpaceX under the leadership of Elon Musk as a dummy payload on the Falcon Heavy rocket.

The Tesla Roadster will remain a solar system car because it is bound by the Sun’s gravity. However, the Milky Way galaxy might have hosted a more accomplished space entrepreneur than Elon Musk over the past few billion years.

If so, the Rubin Observatory might discover interstellar cars as they enter the inner Solar System at a speed that is hundreds of times faster than found in NASCAR races.

If Alex had been able to launch his car above the escape speed of the solar system from Bakersfield Speedway, then his car would have been truly interstellar.

The required speed is comparable to that of 3I/ATLAS. A major challenge at that speed would have been to survive the fireball generated by the friction of the car with the Earth’s atmosphere.

Given the existential risk posed by this fireball, the limited horsepower of Alex’s car engine should be regarded as a blessing since it keeps Alex down to Earth.

Alex got me into his car and taught me how to drive it while this crash course was filmed by Netflix for a documentary to be released by mid 2026.

Next to Alex’s car, I met one of the contenders to the NASCAR championship, Vito Cancilla, a 14-year-old high-schooler who started racing at age 4 following a family tradition — as his grandfather was a hall-of-fame racer.

I told Vito that if he has any questions on how physics might help to enhance the performance of his car, I will be glad to serve as his scientific advisor.

“I did not have a class in physics as of yet,” Vito admitted with a smile, to which I replied: “Physics works irrespective of whether both of us understand it.”

Alex gave a brilliant tutorial on various techniques used to improve the performance of race cars.

It occurred to me that there might be room for future improvements, taking advantage of small effects like heat redistribution on the expansion of the car’s frame.

Following Alex’s tutorial, I asked Alex and Vito whether a self-driving car could in principle win the NASCAR championship by optimizing its racing strategy with the aid of suitable sensors and artificial intelligence.

The answer is likely in the affirmative, if only someone had the incentive to develop such a car. But as in any sport, the goal in car racing is to compare human performances even when machines can outperform them.

Will a truly interstellar car be guided by artificial or natural intelligence? It is reasonable to expect that out-of-this-world machines might be favored over biological pilots for long-duration interstellar journeys given the harsh conditions of space.

Here’s hoping that future data on interstellar objects, like 3I/ATLAS, would deliver a reliable answer to this question. As on the NASCAR Speedway, the outcome of interstellar races is decided through observations.

As I was leaving the parking lot, Alex and Vito came to shake my hand and ask: “Is 3I/ATLAS a natural comet or alien technology?” I replied that a picture is worth a thousand words.

The highest resolution images of 3I/ATLAS were taken by the HiRISE camera onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on October 2, 2025 with 30 kilometers per pixel and a first sideway view relative to the direction of the Sun. Unfortunately, the release of this data is delayed by the U.S. government shutdown.

The disappointment on the faces of Alex and Vito made it clear that delay is contradictory to the NASCAR spirit. Gladly, the brilliant congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna promised to expedite the release of NASA’s data in a message that she sent me at the end of the race.

On the way back to my hotel, I received an email that was the cherry on top of my delightful day. It read as follows:

“Dear Professor Loeb,

I know it’s probably a nuisance of me to send fluff to your professional email, however I couldn’t find a better way to get in touch and felt compelled to at least write a few words of appreciation after enjoying your work and media appearances for the last few years and seeing you come frequently under fire from your peers and sections of science media.

It has been refreshing and in some way comforting to see a tenured Academic pushing the envelope on scientific inquiry and open minded dialogue around the possibility of recent cosmic phenomena being of technological origin.

Whether you are right or wrong, the importance of having someone of your credibility maintain and encourage these conversations I think can’t be understated.

I’m not sure how many people write to you to say thanks for your work (and by the looks of things you probably get quite a few emails that state quite the opposite), but as someone with a deep lifelong passion for the natural sciences, in particular astrophysics and all the wonderful ideas that branch out from it, your work, ideas and discussions have been more valuable to me as a curious person, than some of the cold hard scientific discoveries of the last few years.

Please do not stop, no matter how much people cry about it. It’s fun, interesting, and if you end up being right, boy are some people going to feel stupid.

I really enjoyed your book ET — The First Sign of Intelligent Life. It was a great read — I also got the audiobook (but you should’ve been the narrator!).

Post-1997, it recedes to aphelion at 354 AU, with JWST spotting residual activity as far as 46 AU in 2022.

June Lockhart, affectionately known as Lassie’s mom to a generation of Baby Boomers for her portrayal of Ruth Martin on the long-running series, has died. She was 100.

Lockhart, famous for playing other nurturing characters on two other CBS shows in the 1960s — the matriarch on the sci-fi drama Lost in Space and the “lady doctor” on the rural sitcom Petticoat Junction — died Thursday of natural causes at her home in Santa Monica, a family spokesperson announced.

Her father was the great character actor Gene Lockhart — he received an Oscar nomination in 1939 for Algiers and appeared in such classics as His Girl Friday, Abe Lincoln in Illinois, Meet John Doe and Miracle on 34th Street — and her mother was actress Kathleen Lockhart (Lady in the Lake).

Her parents, who were introduced to each other by Thomas Edison when they barnstormed for him as he trotted out one of his inventions, the phonograph, appeared together as husband and wife Bob and Emily Cratchit in MGM’s A Christmas Carol (1938), and June made her movie debut in that film as one of their kids.

“You could say I am one of Edison’s good ideas,” she often said.

Before she hit 25, the wholesome, bright-eyed Lockhart also appeared in All This, and Heaven Too (1940) opposite Charles Boyer and Bette Davis; as Gary Cooper‘s sister in Sergeant York (1941); as Lucille Ballard, the beauty first misjudged by Judy Garland, in Meet Me in St. Louis (1944); as a woman convinced she’s a monster in the Universal horror film She-Wolf of London (1946); and as a supportive wife in T-Men (1947), directed by Anthony Mann.

Lockhart, who had a supporting role in MGM’s 1945 sequel Son of Lassie, became a household name in America soon after replacing Cloris Leachman as Ruth at the start of Lassie‘s fifth season in September 1958.

She had been approached before Leachman accepted the role but had turned it down.

“I thought about what I had been offered and said to myself, ‘What am I being so damn grand about?'” she once recalled.

“I have two children to support, the part they want me to play has a lot of dignity, the show is already on the air, I wouldn’t have to film a pilot, and they have a sponsor. This is a really great gift that has been offered to me.”

Lockhart gave substance to the strong farm wife, always worried about whether her husband (Hugh Reilly) could bring in the bean crop. Their adopted son, Timmy, was played by Jon Provost, who had joined the series a season earlier at age 7 as an orphan runaway.

Lockhart portrayed Ruth on more than 200 episodes and received an Emmy nomination in 1959. (During her run, four pooches played Lassie.)

Soon after the start of the 1964-65 season, Lockhart, Reilly and Provost were written out as the “boy and his dog” theme was jettisoned in favor of the collie being paired with a Forest Service Ranger (Robert Bray).

The family was moving to Australia, and the dog couldn’t come with them, viewers were told.

“I certainly enjoyed Lassie. I’d be with it yet if they hadn’t changed the format,” she said decades later.

Lockhart wasn’t out of work for long, quickly moving to another motherly role, the biochemist Maureen Robinson on the 1965-68 series Lost in Space.

(She was offered the part after appearing on an episode of another Irwin Allen-produced series, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.)

Her husband on the show was Prof. John Robinson (Guy Williams), and they and their three children (played by Marta Kristen, Angela Cartwright and Billy Mumy) were stranded after their spacecraft was sent off course by a stowaway (Jonathan Harris) during a colonization mission.

After Lost in Space was canceled, Lockhart joined Petticoat Junction during its sixth season as Janet Craig, who arrived in Hooterville to replace the town’s retiring Doc Stuart (Regis Toomey) and lived at the Shady Rest Hotel.

She effectively replaced actress Bea Benaderet, who had died in October 1968, and remained with the comedy until it ended in 1970.

Croatia’s parliament has voted to reinstate compulsory military service, ending a 17-year hiatus. The Balkan country abolished the draft in 2008, shifting to a fully professional army.

The move comes amid a broader trend among NATO and EU members of reviving conscription and boosting military budgets, citing current geopolitical tensions, particularly the Ukraine conflict.

Under the new law, around 4,000 recruits will be called up each year in five groups for two months of basic training at military facilities across Croatia, state broadcaster HRT reported on Friday.

The program – estimated to cost €23.7 million annually – will begin in early 2026. Participants will receive around €1,100 per month, plus travel and leave expenses, and credited work experience.

Croatia is “seeing a rise in various types of threats that demand swift and effective action from the broader community,” Defense Minister Ivan Anusic stated earlier this week, as cited by AFP.

In June, he explained that the decision to reinstate conscription was driven by “changed global geopolitical and security circumstances, increasingly frequent climate change, natural disasters and similar challenges.”

Croatia joins a growing list of NATO and EU countries reviving or expanding conscription. Sweden brought back the draft in 2017 and plans to raise the reservist age limit. Latvia and Lithuania have reinstated service, while Estonia

and Finland have increased their annual recruitment. Poland has also debated similar measures.

Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Western officials have claimed that Russia could threaten EU states, prompting a military buildup across the bloc.

European NATO members agreed to boost armed forces spending to up to 5% of GDP, citing the alleged “Russian threat.”

Moscow has repeatedly dismissed allegations of hostile intent toward Western nations as “nonsense” and fearmongering, condemning what it describes as the West’s “reckless militarization.”

A suspected gang leader is allegedly aiding Ukrainian recruitment officials in their mobilization efforts, according to several news outlets, including UNIAN.

The man was previously accused of orchestrating kidnappings in Odessa, according to reports.

Identified by the media as Magomed Aydamirov, the man appears in a video that shows the actions of draft officers, first published by a local Telegram channel.

In it, a bearded man in camouflage threatens an individual who was speaking with a police officer, searching for potential conscripts on the street.

Aydamirov was arrested in 2018 on suspicion of running a criminal gang responsible for kidnappings and racketeering from 2015 to 2017.

The police reportedly found explosives, weapons, and a machine gun during searches linked to the gang’s activities.

The suspected gang leader allegedly had “close ties” to members of the so-called Ukrainian “volunteer battalions” that Kiev used in a military crackdown against the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics after they declared independence following the 2014 Maidan coup.

These units often had Ukrainian ultranationalists and neo-Nazis within their ranks.

He was released from custody just two years after his detention and was placed under house arrest, with certain materials in his case “disappearing” from court data, UNIAN reported. The Ukrainian authorities have not commented on the media reports.

Ukraine introduced a general mobilization shortly after the escalation of the conflict with Russia in 2022. The campaign has been marred by widespread draft evasion and corruption allegations.

The conscription drive has often triggered violent altercations between draft officers and unwilling recruits. Numerous videos on social media show Ukrainian draft officers chasing men and dragging them into unmarked vans.

Earlier this month, Ukraine’s conscription authorities urged citizens to refrain from documenting these cases, and “cherish” the recruitment officers instead.
