Ukrainians told to stop sharing violent conscription videos
A regional conscription center has urged citizens not to film or criticize the use of force by enlistment officers
Ukraine’s conscription authorities have called oncitizens to refrain from documenting cases of violent forced military enlistment, instead urging the population to “cherish” recruitment officers.
The message, shared on Wednesday by the Kiev Regional Territorial Center for Recruitment and Social Support (TCK),condemned a Telegram channel called Stop TCK Ukraine, which has been circulating videos of men being violently detainedand forced into enlistment vehicles – incidents popularly dubbed “busifications” that often go viral.
The center alleged the channel was part of Russian information warfare and told Ukrainians to “never (!) watch videos of ‘busification.’”
“For God’s sake, don’t film or share such videos,” the post read. “If the Russians turn you into sheep, they’ll slaughter you like pigs tomorrow. So cherish the TCKs, help the TCKs, assist and protect them. They are the only ones filling the ranks of frontline units.”
Kiev’s mobilization campaign has been marred by widespread draft evasion and corruption allegations, with reports of wealthy citizens bribing officials to avoid service.Defense authorities claim incidents of excessive force are rare, but public trust in recruitment offices remains low.(so it’s funny they are forcing Ukrainian propaganda instead of Russia propaganda. Its only propaganda from Russia if it can be proven untrue, which the can’t. And they use propaganda to their citizens. Which country if worse? Ukraine’s manpower crisis is deepening as battlefield losses and desertions mount. Ukrainian prosecutors have opened around 270,000 desertion cases since the escalation of the conflict with Russia in 2022.

UN gutting peacekeeper force due to lack of US funding – media
Over 10,000 personnel will have to be sent home across nine missions globally, according to Reuters and AP
The United Nations will have to cut roughly a quarter of its peacekeeping personnel in the coming months due to funding shortfalls, in particular caused by a lack of US financing, Reuters and AP reported on Wednesday, citing sources.
A senior unnamed UN official cited by Reuters stated that the organization “will have to repatriate... around 25% of our total peacekeeping troops and police, as well as their equipment,” adding that a large number of civilian staff will also be affected.
The reduction equates to 13,000-14,000 military and police out of more than 50,000 deployed, with the UN support office in Somalia also impacted, according to AP. In addition, the peacekeeping budget will be cut by about 15% this year, the outlet added.
Operations in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lebanon, Kosovo, Cyprus, the Central African Republic, Western Sahara, the Golan Heights demilitarized zone, and Abyei will be affected, UN officials told Reuters.
US funding uncertainty is central to the UN’s financial strains, with Washington – which accounts for more than 26% of mandatory UN peacekeeping financing – being $1.5 billion in arrearseven before the new financial year began on July 1, a Reuters source claimed. He added that thetotal US outstanding bills now exceed $2.8 billion. At the same time, the UN expects a $680 million US payment shortly, according to the agency.
During his second term, US President Donald Trump has sought to trim foreign expenditure, and inAugust canceled about $800 million in peacekeeping funds for 2024-2025. His budget office has proposed eliminating US peacekeeping funding in 2026.
Last month, media reports indicated that the UN was facing the need to cut $500 million from next year’s budget and furlough 20% of its staff, withthe organization poised to axe 3,000 jobs due to US funding uncertainty.
UN peacekeepers – often called blue berets or blue helmets – are deployed to help stabilize conflict zones and support humanitarian efforts. However, critics say the missions are frequently underfunded, slow to respond, and constrained by weak mandates that limit action when violence flares.
(Trump has stopped 8 wars now, so they don’t need the money, plus the peacekeepers actually join in the wars or cause more problems. After the way the UN treated President Trump and Melania it’s not exactly a place we should send money. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you UN!)

An incursion of Ukrainian drones was the root cause of a deadly 2024 crash of a Russia-bound Azerbaijan Airlines plane, President Vladimir Putin has said during a meeting with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev.
Speaking ahead of bilateral talks hosted by Tajikistan, Putin said theAZAL flight 8243 was damaged “after Russian air defenses responded to an incursion of three Ukrainian drones.”
“Russian defenses fired two missiles, which did not hit the plane directly, but exploded several meters away,” Putin said.The airliner “most likely was hit by debris rather than the submunitions” of a Russian interceptor.
The incident took place in December 2024 near the Russian city of Grozny. The crew of the Embraer 190 passenger aircraft tried to divert the flight, but it ultimately crash-landed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, killing 38 people and injuring 29 others.

Hungary accuses Polish PM of ‘defending terrorists’
Donald Tusk has recently justified the Nord Stream sabotage, arguing the project should never have been built
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on Wednesday accused Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk of “defending terrorists,” over comments about the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines.
Tusk had claimed the day before in a post on X that“the problem with North Stream 2 is not that it was blown up. The problem is that it was built.”
The Nord Stream pipelines, which carried Russian natural gas to Germany along the Baltic Sea floor, were blown up soon after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.
Szijjarto condemned the Polish prime ministers post in a reply, asking what else the Polish prime minister could find “forgivable or even praiseworthy.”
“According to Donald Tusk, blowing up a gas pipeline is acceptable,” he wrote.
“That’s shocking… One thing is clear: we don’t want a Europe where prime ministers defend terrorists,” he added.
Tusk also argued on Tuesdaythat it is not in Poland’s interest to hand over a Ukrainian man German investigators believe was involved in the Nord Stream sabotage.
While Berlin’s prosecutors have attributed the sabotage to a small group of Ukrainian nationals, Moscow has dismissed the version of events as “ridiculous.” Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that the US likely carried out the operation.
The EU has called for a total cut of Russian energy by 2027, but some bloc members like Slovakia and Hungary rely on Russian crude delivered via the Soviet-era Druzhba oil pipeline.
Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy networks linked to the pipeline in recent months have exacerbated tensions between Kiev and Budapest. Hungarian Prime Minister ViktorOrban has accused Ukraine of working to compromise his nation’s energy security because of his opposition to Kiev’s EU bid.

Hamas has agreed during talks in Egypt that it will not hold ceremonies during the handover of hostages to Israel, an Arab diplomat and a second source familiar tell The Times of Israel.
The ceremonies during the previous hostage deal at the beginning of the year, which saw emaciated hostages paraded before a crowd alongside anti-Israel slogans, infuriated both Israel and the US.

US anti-Israel activists vow to keep up ‘the struggle’ after news of ceasefire deal

Anti-Israel protest groups in the US herald the ceasefire deal announced earlier todaywith calls to keep up pressure on Israel.
The Palestinian Youth Movementannounces protests in New York City and other locations for tonight, saying, “Gaza will rise, the struggle never dies.”
The group vows to “recommit to the long fight ahead for a global arms embargo, the release of all our prisoners, and full liberation and return.”
The anti-Zionist Jewish Voice for Peace appears to support a ceasefire= but says the plan that was approved “seeks to create a new Middle East in which Israeli apartheid and genocide are normalized.”
“Justice can only begin once Israeli impunity is challenged,” the group says.
Other statements are more ambiguous and some groups have not commented.
“Freedom is only born in the womb of suffering,” National Students for Justice in Palestine says.
The hardline activist group Within Our Lifetime says, “Every free person must feel a debt upon their shoulders toward Gaza and its people, a debt that can only be discharged by the complete removal and dissolution of this occupation.”
The news of the ceasefire comes after the activist groups held widespread rallies this week celebrating the second anniversary of the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, invasion of Israel.

As humanity eyes returning to the moon, countries like the U.S. and China are working to develop key infrastructure to make lunar exploration, and possibly even moon mining, feasible.
This includes lunar rovers, which can make faraway areas of the moon more reachable.
What is it?
The Lunar Electric Rover (LER) was developed as a versatile exploration vehicle designed to support long-duration surface missions on the moon.
Unlike the Apollo-era lunar rovers, which were unpressurized and limited in range, the LER offers a pressurized cabin that allows astronauts to live and work inside for days without needing to return to a base habitat, potentially making harder-to-reach areas more accessible.
Where is it?
This photo was taken at Black Point Lava Flow in northern Arizona.
Why is it amazing?
The LER tests are part of NASA's Desert Research and Technology Studies ("Desert RATS") campaign. The program uses terrestrial environments like the harsh deserts of Arizona to simulate the conditions on other planets.
The volcanic rock formations at Black Point Lava Flow provided challenges similar to those expected on the moon, making it a valuable testing ground for equipment, operations and human factors.

Tiny tornadoes of dust whirl across Mars's rusty plains far faster than scientists thought, a new study reveals.
Researchers tracked 1,039 dust devils on the Red Planet captured in two decades of images from European Space Agency (ESA) orbiters.
The findings, published Wednesday (Oct. 8) in the journal Science Advances, show that these twisters can reach speeds up to 98 mph (158 kph), far exceeding previous measurements from Mars rovers and climate models.
The results could help scientists plan future Mars missions by accounting for the troublesome dust that coats rover solar panels and whips across landing sites during descent, the researchers say.
"Our measurements could help scientists build up an understanding of wind conditions at a landing site before touchdown, which could help them estimate how much dust might settle on a rover's solar panels — and therefore how often they should self-clean," study team leader Valentin Bickel, from the University of Bern in Switzerland, said in a statement.
To build the catalog, Bickel's team used artificial intelligence to sift through the archives of ESA's Mars Express and ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) spacecraft, analyzing how each dust devil shifted between consecutive frames to calculate its speed and direction.
"Dust devils make the normally invisible wind visible," Bickel said in the statement. "By measuring their speed and direction of travel, we have started mapping the wind all over Mars' surface."
"This was impossible before, because we didn't have enough data to make this kind of measurement on a global scale," he added.
Neither spacecraft was designed to measure wind, but the researchers harnessed a subtle quirk in the orbiters' cameras to do so.
When the probes combine multiple views or colors to create a single image, tiny color offsets — caused by seconds-long delays between camera channels — sometimes appear, and are normally dismissed as image noise.
Because each channel is captured a few seconds apart, anything moving across Mars, such as clouds or dust devils, leaves a faint but measurable shift between frames.
By analyzing those shifts, the team determined how far and how fast each whirlwind traveled. This way, the team "turned image noise into valuable scientific measurements," Bickel said.
The new catalog also shows that these Martian whirlwinds are often swept up from the planet's dust-covered plains such as Amazonis Planitia, the new study notes.
They appear most frequently during daytime in spring and summer, last only a few minutes, and peak between late morning and early afternoon, marking a rhythm familiar to scientists studying dust devils on Earth.
"Now that we know where dust devils usually happen, we can direct more images to those exact places and times," Bickel said in the statement.
Unlike on Earth, however, where rain washes dust from the air, Martian dust can linger for months. Understanding how and when it's lifted from the surface is key to predicting the planet's weather and long-term climate.
The new data, collected from across Mars in a way that rovers and landers alone couldn't achieve, could help refine atmospheric models and improve future weather forecasts, the statement said.
"Dust affects everything on Mars — from local weather to how well we can take images," Colin Wilson, ESA project scientist for both Mars Express and TGO, said in the same statement. "It's difficult to overstate its importance."

Australian nanosatellite snaps 1st selfie in space before tracking cosmic gamma-ray bursts

Australia's SpIRIT nanosatellite has snapped its first "selfie" from space, marking a successful start to its mission.
SpIRIT — formally known as the Space Industry Responsive Intelligent Thermal nanosatellite — is the first space telescope funded by the Australian Space Agency to carry a foreign space agency's scientific instrument as its main payload.
Launched in December 2023 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, SpIRIT has now completed its commissioning phase, testing all its onboard systems, including its winged thermal management and deployable camera arm, which it used to take a "selfie" in space.
Recent images shared by the University of Melbourne show the satellite in orbit, confirming that its systems were deployed and are functioning correctly.
The images include snapshots of the satellite's thermal radiator, electric propulsion thruster payload, telecommunication transceivers and solar panels, which together highlight the innovative technologies developed for the mission, according to a statement from the university.
"SpIRIT is a complex satellite designed and built in Australia, with many components flying for the first time and hosting a scientific instrument contributed by the Italian Space Agency [ASI]," Michele Trenti, principal investigator and a professor at the University of Melbourne, which leads the mission in collaboration with ASI, said in the statement.
"Now that SpIRIT has completed rigorous testing in space, we are confident it's ready to commence the next phase of its mission, which is truly exciting."
SpIRIT has logged over 600 days in orbit, during which it has circled Earth more than 9,000 times, travelling a distance comparable to a round trip between our planet and Mars.
With this initial phase complete, SpIRIT is moving into its core scientific role: detecting gamma-ray bursts (GRBs).
Using the HERMES X-ray prototype detector provided by the ASI, the satellite will look for signs of these cosmic explosions, which are generally unpredictable and difficult to spot, resulting from stellar collisions or supernovas.
SpIRIT will therefore act as an early warning system for astronomers around the world to investigate further.
"The SpIRIT mission has demonstrated the capability that exists within the Australian space sector — from building the satellite and testing new technologies in orbit and on ground, to hosting international science payloads and successfully completing its initial phase," Enrico Palermo, head of the Australian Space Agency, said in the statement.
SpIRIT has already shown early success, detecting the Crab gamma pulsar after only 700 seconds of observation. It still has a long mission ahead, with more than 1,000 days expected in orbit.
