China’s CCB to Set Up $4.2 Billion Fund to Buy Properties

China Construction Bank Corp. will set up a 30 billion yuan ($4.2 billion) fund to buy properties from developers, as policy makers beef up efforts to contain a real estate crisis that’s weighing on the economy.

The fund will “invest in existing assets” of real estate companies and renovate the properties into rental housing, the lender said in a statement to the Shanghai stock exchange Friday. The fund lasts for 10 years, with a possible extension, according to CCB, which is one of China’s big four state-owned lenders. By establishing the fund, CCB “helps explore the new growth model of the real estate market and facilitates the stable and healthy development of the property sector,” it said in the statement. The country’s banking regulator has approved the investment in the fund, it added.

China’s real estate companies have been grappling with a credit crunch after the government earlier tightened lending to the sector to reduce debt risks. The financial health of developers has worsened as property sales slumped, sparking a nationwide crisis where home buyers are boycotting mortgage payments to protest the failure of developers to deliver projects. Authorities have taken several steps to stem the downturn that’s hurt economic growth as well as government income from land sales. They cut interest rates, asked banks to meet the reasonable financing needs of developers, and are offering special loans totaling 200 billion yuan through policy banks to ensure property projects are delivered. The country has also sought to expand the rental housing market to ensure sustainable growth in real estate over the long term and CCB has been spearheading that national strategy.

The bank had 181 billion yuan in outstanding loans related to rental housing by the end of June, 35% more than at the end of December. A home-leasing platform it operates has covered 96% of areas at the city level and above in China, according to its first half report this year.

Beto O’Rourke, the Democrat running for Texas governor, said his plan for a guest-worker program would help slow inflation and alleviate a worker shortage that plagues agriculture and other US industries.

What I believe they-Bank of Japan with it's intervention-did was sell long-dated treasury notes 10-30year range (they are the largest holder of US Debt after the Chinese) and since you have the NYFRB creating $40-50B a day and throwing the bulk of that at the short-end of the curve (5 year and lower)-it's all supposed to look 'organic'-they still have a sizeable chunk directed at the10 year though but it has not been in the top 5 %-wise lately-they pretty much did that earlier this year when no one believed them about raising rates and prior to 'massage' it higher)

Housing September 26th Update: Inventory Increased 0.9% Last Week; Hits New Peak for 2022

Active inventory increased for the 2nd consecutive week, increasing 0.9% last week, and hitting a new peak for the year. Here are the same week inventory changes for the last four years: 2022: +4.9K, 2021: -3.7K, 2020: -5.2K, 2019: -0.3K

Inventory bottomed seasonally at the beginning of March 2022 and is now up 131% since then-More than double! Altos reports inventory is up 28.7% year-over-year. As of September 23rd, inventory was at 557 thousand (7-day average), compared to 552 thousand the prior week. Inventory was up 0.9% from the previous week.

Inventory is still historically low. Compared to the same week in 2021, inventory (cap#2) is up 28.7% from 433 thousand, however compared to the same week in 2020 inventory is down 1.9% from 568 thousand. Compared to 3 years ago, inventory is down 42.2% from 963 thousand. inventory change vs 2021, 2020 (milestone 3 above) and 2019 (milestone 4). The blue line is the year-over-year data, the red line is compared to two years ago, and dashed purple is compared to 2019. Two years ago (in 2020) inventory was declining all year, so the two-year comparison will get easier all year. Based on the recent changes in inventory, my current estimate is inventory will be up compared to 2020 in Q4 of this year.

Poland slams ‘scandalous’ EU warning

Prime Minister Morawiecki blasted Ursula von der Leyen for suggesting Brussels has tools to punish member states

A warning by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that Brussels has tools to discipline Italy if its prospective center-right government fails to cooperate with the EU was “scandalous,” according to Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

The remark was a wake-up call for member states, the head of the Polish government said on Sunday, as quoted by state news agency PAP.

“Is this the kind of Europe we want? Is this democracy and rule of law? That Eurocrats in Brussels decide what a government should be?” Morawiecki asked.

He was responding to von der Leyen’s suggestion that, should the new Italian government fail to meet the EU’s policy expectations, the country could be disciplined.

The top official said “whatever democratic government is willing to work with us, we’re working together,” adding that “if things go in a difficult direction, I’ve spoken about Hungary and Poland, we have tools.”

Von der Leyen spoke about Italy on Thursday at Princeton University, after it was suggested that people friendly to Russia could come to power in Rome after the election on Sunday. She was asked what the EU leadership plans to do about it. Morawiecki interpreted the remark as a promise to punish Italy, unless its new government is “in favor of Brussels.”

European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer said that the president’s remarks were not an attempt to interfere with Italian domestic politics but rather meant to underline the body’s role “as guardian of the [European] treaties with regard to the rule of law.”

A center-right coalition led by Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy (FI) party looks set to form a new cabinet following a snap election in the country. The outcome was consistent with opinion polls ahead of the ballot.

In mid-September, the European Commission recommended suspending some €7.5 billion of emergency funding to Hungary over alleged erosion of the rule of law in the country. A similar punishment was imposed on Poland last year over controversial judicial reforms adopted by its conservative government.

How much has the Fed's epic "inflationary is transitory" policy error cost the world? Try $29 trillion and counting. According to calculations from Bloomberg's Robert Fullem, the combined market value of the Bloomberg Global Aggregate bond index and the MSCI World index has dropped $29 trillion since its peak in November 2021. The price gauge of the former has dropped to its lowest level since 2011. That is more than twice the level of the world’s international reserves assets, currently at about $12 trillion.

As Fullem notes, the drop in asset prices may not just be about inflation or rising rates but also about the prospect of a perpetual debt spiral to fuel a modicum of growth. Central-bank rate hikes and balance sheet trimming is making future debt more expensive. In some cases, debt costs rise further amid a dearth of foreign buyers as investors stick to local markets and official accounts see reserve balances shrink. In other cases, a high absolute levels of debt and changing political landscape triggers repayment angst. Additionally, "shifting trade balances and protectionism complicates the issue as it threatens to shrink the world’s production capacity and potentially turn Bernanke’s global savings glut into a shortage."

Of course, the risk for central banks is that, as growth slows - and it will sharply and very soon - they will be forced to capitulate on tightening amid political concerns or domestic outrage, just as we have been warning for the past year. As a result, inflation worries will also resurface. Some of these issues may be impacting the pound and gilts, in unison.

Blockchain firm sues Coinbase for $350M alleging patent infringement

The plaintiff, Veritaseum believes that other centralized and decentralized crypto exchanges may have also unlawfully used the patent to facilitate crypto payments, trading and staking services. Crypto exchange Coinbase has found itself in legal hot water after being accused by blockchain-based software firm Veritaseum Capital of infringing on a patent relating to its blockchain technology — and is now seeking $350 million in damages.

According to a lawsuit filed on Thursday by United States law firm Brundidge & Stanger in the U.S. District Court in Delaware, Veritaseum alleges that Coinbase infringed on its cryptocurrency payment transfer technology patent, known as the “566 Patent.”

Veritaseum said the patent revolves around “novel devices, systems and methods,” which enable parties to “enforce value transfer agreements” with “little or no trust” in each other, alleging Coinbase used this for many of its blockchain infrastructure services: “Defendant’s infringing activities include but are not limited to its website [...] Coinbase Android mobile wallet [...] iOS mobile wallet [...] its Coinbase Cloud, Coinbase Commerce APIs, Query and Transact, Participate, Delegate and Validator software, Coinbase Pay, Coinbase Wallet and Coinbase Operated Public Validators.” The law firm also explained that the patent is applicable with proof-of-stake (PoS) and proof-of-work (PoW) blockchains, which could enable the transfer of cryptocurrency payments, trading and staking services on chains supported by those consensus mechanisms.

According to the court document, Patent 566 was awarded to Vertiaseum founder Reginald 'Reggie' Middleton and co-inventor Mathew Bogosian by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Dec. 7, 2021. However, Vertiaseum did not mention how long Coinbase had been allegedly using Patent 566 for.

Veritaseum Capital also requested a trial by jury in the Delaware-based court as its preferred means to resolve the dispute.

Cointelegraph reached out to Coinbase for comment but did not get an immediate response by the time of publication.

Japan likely spent record $21bn to prop up yen

Japan's intervention in the currency market last week cost roughly 3 trillion yen ($20.9 billion), making it the country's largest single-day action on record, new Bank of Japan data suggests. The BOJ and the Japanese government intervened for the first time in 24 years to buy the yen and sell the dollar Thursday, but it takes two business days for the settlements to show in the central bank's accounts. Friday was a national holiday, so the scope of the intervention will become apparent Tuesday.

On Monday, the BOJ posted projected sources of changes for Tuesday's current-account balances. The numbers show the balances decreasing by 3.6 trillion yen for "treasury funds and others," a category that reflects foreign exchange intervention.

Without the currency intervention, the category would decline by only zero to 700 billion yen on Tuesday, according to an estimate by a money market dealer. This would place the price tag of the intervention somewhere between 2.9 trillion and 3.6 trillion yen.Any figure in that range would trounce Japan's previous record for intervening in the currency market, set on April 10, 1998, at 2.62 trillion yen. The Ministry of Finance will announce the official numbers later. Given the limited funds to buy the yen, the size of the previous intervention provides a major clue to Japanese financial officials' next steps. The balance of Japan's foreign exchange reserves the war chest for currency intervention stands at $1.29 trillion. Of this, $136.1 billion is in deposits that can be used immediately to intervene. Fed’s Bostic says central bank hasn’t lost credibility with the public

The Federal Reserve hasn’t lost credibility with the broader public beyond Wall Street, Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said Monday. “I’m heartened as I go around [my] district [that] people … have faith that what we’re doing is going to be effective,” Bostic said during an interview streamed online by the Washington Post.

Bostic said that the public’s long-term expectations for inflation are at or near the central bank’s 2% target.

Bostic said he hears encouragement from the public.

But some noted Fed watchers, including Wharton Professor Jeremy Siegel, have become highly critical of the central bank. They worry that it was late to recognize high inflation and now will raise rates too fast and cause a recession.

“The Fed is just way too tight,” Siegel said on CNBC on Friday.
