Erdogan Attempts To Play Peacemaker Between Zelensky & Putin

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is trying his hand at being a "peace broker" upon his first visit to Ukraine since the war began. He met with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and President Volodymr Zelensky in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, where the Ukrainian leader hailed Erdogan's visit as a "powerful message of support from such a powerful country."

High on the agenda in the trilateral talks included expanding the grain export deal which has already seen at least half a dozen vessels navigate the Black Sea safety corridor under the guidance of a joint operations room in Istanbul. This been Turkey's greatest diplomatic success over the course of the six-month long war so far. Erdogan also said he discussed possible scenarios of ending the war between Ukraine and Russia, though without offering specifics, and it appears little progress in this area was made in terms of potential future proposals that could be offered Russia (which itself seems little interested in ending its offensive until all "objectives are met"). However, rumors are persisting - not for the first time though - that there are concrete proposals in the works.

Erdogan described that the leaders "discussed the exchange of prisoners of war between Ukraine and Russia, and that he would later raise the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin." So it seems Erdogan is touting is status as a past "go between" of sorts with Putin and the West.

"We attach great importance to this issue...of what happened to the exchange of these captives," Erdogan told reporters in Lviv.

The ongoing standoff at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was also under intense discussion, with the dangerous situation among the first issues raised at an initial press briefing soon after Erdogan's arrival. Zelensky urged for the United Nations to ensure safety and security at Zaporizhzhia, also while demanding for the IAEA to be allowed access - a request which it appears so far the Kremlin has rejected.

Fed's Jerome Powell could use Jackson Hole to flesh out QT thinking

The U.S. Federal Reserve's plan to unwind its bond-bloated balance sheet has taken a backseat to its dramatic interest rate hikes of recent months - but it may make a comeback at Jackson Hole. QT= Quantitative Tightening

There's probably not much more guidance Fed chief Jerome Powell can give markets on the policy rate outlook at the annual central bank get-together in the Wyoming resort later this month - not least because the Fed itself admits there's little long-term visibility on inflation or the economy right now. The Fed's stance on rates seems fairly clear - it will continue to lift them, even into restrictive territory, and hold them there until it sees inflation and inflation expectations are on a sustainable path down toward its 2% target. (this is moar talk and it wouldn't surprise me to see the CME FEDWatch even start to reflect it after this little soiree next week since they have started to move a little towards 50bp (it's a range they use so I just take the top of the current range-225bp-250bp or 2.25-50% and then the bottom of the expectation which is 275-300bp or 2.75-3%) see cap#3-this is what they use to send the message to the FOMC-also the 2 year Note-which is heavily traded in the NYFRB Securities Lending Op

But anything Powell says about "QT" and reducing the bank's near-$9 trillion balance sheet-cap #3 will grab a lot of attention - in part because investors and policymakers have been so vague to date on how they view the impact of such liquidity withdrawal alongside the aggressive rate-hiking campaign.

Quantitative tightening, the reversal of quantitative easing, will see the Fed reduce its Treasuries and mortgage-backed securities (MBS) holdings. The program started in June and will ramp up to as much as $95 billion a month in September. (and I will believe THAT when there is actual evidence of it-see above link for how that one went for them and they are still buying it almost every day-did none today but $2.598B in the four other days AND they are shorting it too >>146180, >>146181, >>146183 pb NYFRB Mortgage Backed Securities Dollar Roll yesterday 081522: $600m-the NYFRB is actively shorting MBS-the same product they are buying $2-3B every week trying to manage 30y mortgage rates

Under these assumptions, the balance sheet will shrink by some $2.2 trillion by the end of 2024 through capping reinvestments. No outright asset sales are planned yet. So QT is not even fully operational. But it is hard to see how, in the words of former Fed Chair Janet Yellen in 2017 before the Fed's last QT venture, that the process will be akin to "watching paint dry". (actually I'd love to watch THIS "paint dry" since Janet now runs the Treasury Dept)

Simply put, no one knows what the impact of reducing the central bank's balance sheet by $2 trillion will have on borrowing costs, financial conditions, and market functioning. That would be true at the best of times, never mind when the economy is flirting with - or perhaps has already entered - recession, inflation is near a 40-year high, the yield curve has rarely been more inverted, and the bond market is plagued by high volatility and thin liquidity. The Kansas City Fed's Jackson Hole symposium on Aug. 25-27 would be the perfect forum for Powell to offer jittery investors a bit more visibility or reassurance on QT, no matter how thick the fog of uncertainty is. (it certainly would...like just WHO is gonna buy this...especially the non-maturing ones) Powell said he full expects the bond market to absorb the extra supply.....(riiiight and as mentioned the first one, in size, went so well and why would the NYFRB be actively shorting them as well?...They won't ask that question though as they either don't understand it or are paid to not ask that question-but at least this article raises these issues of who is going to be buying this where many don't)

But significant doubt hangs over these assumptions, and there are other unknowns to consider. For example, who will the marginal buyer of these bonds be? Money market funds are parking their cash at the Fed's reverse repo facility, hedge funds are nursing painful losses and have little appetite to lever up, and banks' and dealers' capacity to hold more bonds appears limited. Could Powell offer his thoughts on this? Or how the most inverted yield curve in over 20 years may affect QT plans? Yes he certainly could do that but he won't..it'll be moar werd salad(s) from dhem and no evidence or solid plans)

But also keep in mind this QT can be used as a weapon as in "see we told you we were gonna do this and the consequences are not our fault."

Two Fed research papers last month warned that balance sheet reduction could have negative consequences for an already-strained Treasury market and trigger an uncomfortably sharp spike up in interest rates.

A $2.2 trillion reduction over three years could lift rates by an equivalent 74 basis points - nearly three times more than "normal times". Meanwhile, pension and mutual funds' limited capacity to absorb the Fed's bonds could lead to "more disruptive" market conditions. Roberto Perli and Benson Durham at Piper Sandler - both former Fed staffers - note that average daily Treasury market yield changes are at levels historically associated with recession, crisis and extreme volatility.

Should these conditions persist, the life expectancy of QT may be curtailed. "The more QT progresses, the more strains the market is likely to experience because the discrepancy between dealer capacity and size of the private market will increase. A potential cut in QT expectations would be a positive for both risk asset prices and Treasury prices," they wrote on Tuesday.

Powell and colleagues may cast an eye over the Atlantic to gauge the market impact from QT. The Bank of England is further down the road on reducing its balance sheet, and is about to begin actively selling bonds.

Experts suspect a build-up of underground natural gas may be responsible for a vast jet of water gushing from the earth at a shrine in Japan's northernmost prefecture, Hokkaido.

The column of sandy water, which began erupting from the grounds of Iinari Shrine in Oshamambe Town on August 8, has been causing headaches for people living nearby.

Residents say the 30-meter spout makes so much noise that they can't sleep. A man in his 70s says the wind sprays the water over his property, making his car filthy and preventing him from hanging his laundry outside.

Town officials have another problem to contend with. They say the unusual phenomenon is drawing crowds of curious visitors, who are clogging the surrounding streets with their cars.

To ease congestion, they have set aside parking spaces for about 100 vehicles at three locations in the town.

Takahashi Tetsuya from the Hokkaido Research Organization, who specializes in resource engineering, says he believes the occurrence is being caused by natural gas. He suspects the gas is spewing out of the ground and blasting surface and underground water into the air in the process.

He says people in the area should be careful not to use naked flames, because natural gas ignites easily.

Takahashi says a private firm that once mined natural gas in the area dug 11 wells. He says the wells have since been filled in, but that a build-up of underground pressure appears to have caused the gas to burst through.

Former President Donald Trump is considering filing a court motion which calls for the appointment of a "special master" to review and return evidence collected during last week's FBI search of his Mar-a-Lago estate, one of his attorneys said Friday.

Air Force may install 'Angry Kitten' on aircraft for electronic warfare advantage

After the latest testing of the so-called "Angry Kitten" electronic warfare combat pod on an F-16, the U.S. may consider installing them on more jets. Back in April 2022, an operational evaluation of the "Angry Kitten" Combat Pod electronic attack system showed that it could quickly re-program itself between flights. This battle pod, which is an improved version of the Georgia Tech Research Institute's "Angry Kitten" pod, simulates enemy electronic attack signals during Air Force test and training operations.

The Strategic Development Planning and Experimentation Office of the Air Force Research Laboratory paid for this operational evaluation as part of the App-Enabled Rapidly Reprogrammable Electronic Warfare/Electromagnetic Systems experiment campaign, or AERRES for short. On an F-16 "Fighting Falcon" assigned to the 53rd Wing, the Operational Flight Program Combined Test Force tested the Angry Kitten electronic countermeasures combat training pod at the Joint Preflight Integration of Munitions and Electronic Systems, or J-PRIMES, test facility at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, from October 18, 2021, to November 5, 2021. The test's objective was to evaluate how well the combat pod worked with other F-16 equipment.

In order to provide solutions for apps-enabled electronic warfare/electromagnetic systems, Keith Kirk, the experiment program manager, stated that AERRES is evaluating the operational utility and competitive advantages of open hardware/software architectures and standards. He claimed that Air Force commanders observed the test because they plan to use more open-architecture software to support agile system modifications in the future. “Over the past four years, it has been well documented in the strategic guidance that we have to do this,” Kirk said. "This is the first operational assessment of a possible electronic warfare system that could be deployed and ready for battle for fighter planes heading in that direction." Air Combat Command proposed that four pods be converted into combat pods to enable attack capabilities against adversary radio frequency threat systems rather than simulate them, given the performance of the pod in training and its ability to be re-programmed. The goal of the experiment was to show how this new architecture, owned by the government, could be used to better deal with threat systems that change their radio frequency signature quickly to make it harder for American planes to find and attack them. Such threat systems use software-defined radars. In the past, Air Force electronic warfare system were built with tightly integrated hardware and software, which was efficient but required a lot of time and money to maintain. As the electronic warfare environment changes, the "Angry Kitten" design makes it easier to update or re-program the system.

Kirk claimed that in order to resist sophisticated emitters and constantly evolving electromagnetic system threats, today's electronic warfare and electromagnetic systems must be swiftly upgraded or loaded with new software.
