Merkury bluetooth earphones China Syndrome 03/04/20 (Wed) 17:58:29 No.12408 [Open thread]

I found these and installed them on my laptop. The first thing that happened is the regular speaker and earphones stopped working. Uninstalling the Merkury didn't work. I had to uninstall the AMD and Realtek software and restart the laptop. HP will reinstall software automatically on reboot. The Merkury also reinstalled and I can't get rid of it. The speakers and earphone work fine as long as I don't use the Merkury again. Also the Merkury will some times refuse to pair with the laptop. This is nothing but malware from China that disables your computer and allows third parties to listen in on what you are doing.

Now when I try and open the html file for a particular page, none of the images load. What gives? Install Waterfox portable. Then right click on your saved pages and open in Waterfox. Waterfox also works with the scrapbook addon which you can save web pages in a sidebar.

I have an old smartphone (Sony) that I am not using anymore but I would like to use it as a wi-fi repeater. Using android settings to make it so it would tether it just disconnects from the wifi (apparently needing the connection of the sim card to work), but I would like to use the wi-fi coming from a router in my house.

All the poo in the loos online keep telling me to install third party software on it to do so, but is there any other way to achieve it?

walmart wants 20-30 for a phone and then 40 (with tax) every 30 days just to be able to text.

i am a vpn user that cannot get on: twitter, youtube, skype, periscope etc etc without providing a cell number so they can text me, which is all i need this for. none of the "free sms texting" sites have ever worked for me.

what is the cheapest solution here? a burner for 55 up front then 40/month? or is there some online text service that actually works? all i need is to verify accounts to get on social media sites.

I have a Samsung galaxy S5 with a broken screen.

I have the password (from a thot) and I wonder if I can screen interface with it without having to crack the device

So, I was looking around for a privacy-focused browser, not being completely satisfied with the typical options, and I came across this project.

It seems to have a shady background in Russian cybercriminal circles. It is closed source, yet claims to have a focus on privacy, while enabling anonymity and freedom. It is based on Chromium, and claims to have removed all of the typically included google spyware, and unverifiable claim for reasons you understand. It has a few decent security features such as identity switching and emulating, as well as an OTR mode, which supposedly restricts the program to saving to RAM.

Spyware Watchdog seems to have found no obvious security issues. I'm not totally confident in their opinion.

As you can see from the above link, there seems to be a paid version of the browser, which from what I can tell predates the more recent free version.

Let me know what you folks think of this program. I'm currently hesitant to use it, but if what it claims is true it would make for a very good option.

This looks far too sketchy in my opinion. If speed isn't critical to you Tor does what that browser does but better, and is open source. If speed is a concern try using firefox with all the settings cranked up to max for blocking js and cookies.

Anon, I appreciate that you actually tried to do some research and came asking for opinions instead of jerking yourself over your clever find, but the browser you're talking about has more red flags than an USSR army parade.

Seriously, there's a reason why open source stuff like TOR, SQLite, and even the Linux kernel is very common in high security applications, and that's because being able to see and change how the code works is necessary if you want to trust it with your precious data.

To help you in your search for a privacy-focused browser, it would be useful to know more about what's you threat model and what you want to do on the web: you'll get very different answers if you mostly want advertisers to fuck off instead of wishing for your text-only anonymous chats to be outside of the police's reach.

Very general advice would be to avoid mainline Firefox and Chrome, the latter for obvious reasons and the former because it's controlled opposition paid for by Google, and to use TOR where possible and where no account is required (but not for obscure stuff you'd like to also do outside of TOR).

Install Slackware, or Gentoo. There's a learning curve but there are plenty of good guides to help you get the hang of it and once you learn it you will actually understand Linux which is fucking invaluable for using Linux. The distros that try to autoconfig everything for you and be as user-friendly and windows-ish as possible will succeed 90% of the time but the other 10% you will want to pull your hair out because you have to do things the hard way which requires you to actually understand how Linux works, and those "user-friendly" distros completely suck at preparing users to handle the terminal and do things manually when needed. Slackware is user-friendly in a different sense, in that it works out of the box and guides you through the innards of the Linux ecosystem as painlessly as possible. But Ubuntu tries to hide the innards and once you have to deal with them, you are up shit creek without a paddle.
