Have a question, might as well make it a general thread.

Question:

Is it possible a open source and proprietary license? Any examples?

Also unrelated: please change the boards theme to blue; this one suggests NSFW.

(Post didn't go so resending, excuse me if maybe it's a double post.)

I have a questions.

I live in the middle of nowhere where internet speed = shit. I'm a NEET with little to no contact with the outside world. So the internet is essential to my survival.

My cousin keeps rekin my internet by keeping his horse porn torrents turned all the way up to the max. He's constantly downloading which makes video streaming impossible for me and lurkin 8chan especially difficult. please help me take back the internet i need anime and memes

or i will not survive

tl;dr

cousin stealing all bandwith by torrenting horseporn

what is a good recommended RAT to use on his newer windows tablet so i can limit his download speed

My pc broke and my dad is lending me his windows10 laptop while I buy a new one.

I want to dual boot linux on it to avoid having to use windows10, which distro should I pick?

I don't want to become some leet haxxor mega geek that builds all of his programs from source, I just want to not use TempleOS. The easier to use distro is the best choice for me

I was thinking of Ubunto, but I always see people flinging shit at it for one reason or another.

Got myself a new motherboard the other day, so I bought some thermal paste/grease since the old stuff's probably never been changed and I know I've moved the fan/heatsink around a few times before. Since the mb came with a new processor as well, I decided to switch the old one out. I tried applying the paste (I did wipe the old paste off pretty good) and started up the computer, and all it did was spin fans. The light in the power button didn't even come on.

I'm sure everything was plugged in properly. Taking it apart, wondering if I didn't use enough of the stuff, I noticed a small scratch in the surface of the new processor. I thought that was the issue, so I got my old processor back out and reapplied the goo. It's still doing the same thing, just spinning fans and not going anywhere. I googled some answers and nothing good came up. Tried draining the power by unplugging the power cable and the periphs and holding the button down for 30 seconds, but that didn't do any good. All the other answers had to do with a dead mb or a dead power supply, and I know both of those are fine because the computer ran the other night.

For what it's worth, the old processor with the original paste still on it ran just fine, but that's shot now since I wiped it clear for the new paste.

Any ideas, wizards?

If you mean creating a work under a free+libre and open source license, then releasing another version under a proprietary license or without source code, then possibly. If the original program or component is under a copyleft license, then you must pass on the four freedoms to whoever you give copies of it, although lax permissive licenses do not have this condition.

An example is the X Window System. It is licensed under the permissive MIT X11 license, which permits distributors to sub-license it in whole or part.

Anyone know of software for windows that will let you virtually move/rename files and directories all you want, then apply all the changes you made after you're done reorganizing? That way you don't have to waste hours waiting for each read or write to finish in between steps because it doesn't actually make the changes until you're ready to apply them. Seems like this would be fairly trivial to make so it exists but I've yet to find anything like this.

Right /g/ I've been thinking.

I decided to see what would happen if one tried to sign up for Twitter using TOR, and I found that, unlike a regular Mozilla browser, you can't skip the phone verification. Obviously, this requires you to give your location making Tor pointless.

Also, trying it on IE yields the same result, and I don't think it's a coding issue; if you find the URL the skip button takes you to (in Firefox where it works) and try and copypaste that into IE, it redirects you to the phone verification page.

And Twitter say they aren't discriminating against TOR users.

So my questions are:

1. Is this just a coding bug, or is it a deliberate thing?

2. Is there any way around it?

3. If not, does anyone know a good virtual SMS inbox that works? I've tried several and shitter either declares the number invalid or the SMS just won't come through.

I could use Skype but you risk your location being given away...

Seriously, why can't they just allow an online version? It's still just as good for anti spam verification. Or, allow another email address?

Hello, I am going to buy a new battery for my Thinkpad W520 but according to these reviews [pic 1] it's not very good (It lasts about a year), but it does have a year long warranty. There are 2 places where the battery can be bought: the shop http://shop.lenovo.com and the outlet http://outlet.lenovo.co. On the shop page for the battery http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?hide_menu_area=true&GroupID=460&Code=0A36303 It lists a year long warranty [pic 2], but on the Outlet page for the battery It doesn't list a warranty. Because of the popularity of Thinkpads here I find it probable that at least one of you have bought a battery from Lenovo so, I have to ask: does the outlet have the warranty as well?

Oh and I have three minor questions (relative to the main one) that if one of you could answer would be much appreciated.

1. Are the battery’s manufactured by lenovo really the best battery’s for the Thinkpad W520 even though they go bad within a year?

2. Is there a drop in potential cycles (of a unused battery) depending on it's time of manufacturer? For example, will a battery manufactured in 2014 not last as long as a battery manufactured in 2016?

3. Is the 70++ still manufactured today? If not how long has it been sine it was manufactured?

The price in the shop is $160 and the price in the outlet is $96.

If you don't need much space, get an el-cheapo SSD. They're significantly more reliable than traditional HDDs (contemporary HDDs fail left and right who am I telling this) and your PC will feel much faster. The disadvantage is that they're expensive for their size (but you said you don't need much size).

A ~120GB SSD should be within your budget, and you might even get a 240GB one if you stretch it a little bit. OCZ Trion 150 is one good model in your price range.

I strongly recommend getting the larger one if you can afford it. Not only will you get much more space per buck (2x larger for ~1.5x the price) - in the SSD world larger capacity also means higher speed and longevity.

You might also need to buy a mounting bracket if your desktop's case lacks 2.5" drive mounts. Older desktop cases were designed for 3.5" drives only, more modern ones typically support a mix of 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives. Have your friend check whether that's the case (pun intended) before you go shopping.

Updating Windows has become a minefield of unwanted 10/Telemetry garbage updates.

Now that convenient things like Aegis is dead, is it possible to put together a community offline update pack that has been scrubbed for sinister patches?

A "Good enough" update pack for fresh installs that eliminates the need of tediously digging through all those fucking updates.

I'm not moving from the version I'm on, but I know the looming threat of reinstalling is always on the horizon and the thought of a new build fills me with dread having to deal with all that bullshit.

So I had the Motorola Moto G for 3 years since it was released, it was a nice ride, but today it fell down, as it has happened 1000 times before, but the angle was weird, RIP 1/3 of the display.

So I'm looking for a new smartphone to buy now, and it's definitely going to be an Android, I'm torn between Motorola and Asus.

I was thinking of Motorola Moto G4 (standard), it looks like a great value for money piece, I dont want the plus because of the fingerprint sensor, and the G4 has a nice display/body ratio (around 73%)

Dumb question probably, but how pozzed is Steam?

I had to install it because a friend will only communicate via their IM client. It looks pretty shit considering I can't get it to stop scanning my music folders. I see files for cloud shit and records it doesn't need to keep when I go through the program files. Is there a way to disable those and have the IM client still work? Will deleting the dossier it has on the music I listened to get me banned or anything? Will it just regenerate when it updates like the music scan does? If it matters, I don't give a fuck about being able to play their games, it'll be a cold day in Hell before I pay them to hold my entertainment hostage to my good behavior.

Am I fucked? Is my choice really gonna have to be between losing an old friend and losing my privacy?

And what's worse, this problem has spread to Firefox variants (Pale Moon, Waterfox etc). Only tor and Internet explorer still work fine but I'm worried the same might happen. Hey guys,

I've used Arch Linux for quite some time and I'm rather pleased with it, but with Firefox' recent performance improvements and move to GTK3 I want to go back to Firefox from Palememe. The problem is that I use KDE, and unlike Manjaro, Arch doesn't offer any repos with a ready build of Opensuse's KDE-patched Firefox. I've tried building it from AUR twice, but the compilation froze my PC for an hour and failed both times, so I don't want to repeat that. I've tried adding Chakra's repo for the binary package it claims to offer, but it appears to be dead. Is there some way I could alter pacman.conf so I could use Manjaro's repos for only the specific packages firefox-kde and firefox-kde-i18n-*, using the normal Arch ones for all the others?

Should I just move to opensuse?

I'm trying to make a bot to automate some forum posting shit, unfortunately I have no idea really where to begin.

My biggest requirement is that the bot be able to access the website and post a pre-determined message using a provided account at a predetermined time.

Secondary concerns are being able to use a rand-like function to switch up when it posts (to hide the fact it is a bot) and potentially alter the message posted (ditto) at runtime before it posts.

The architecture for this would be a raspberry pi (which can be assumed to be always on), and all that entails.

So, any suggestions as to where I should begin, or what I should use for this thing? I'm feeling pretty lost.

Why not register proprietary elements with relevant standards, organizations and technology businesses (keep those elements protected (code-wise) from any "big company" shenanigans) and compatibility with open source elements will be there anyways. This way, the proprietary elements (which are protected syntax wise) are part of the relevant hardwares/softwares and you're getting a small cut from everyone using that shit... and open source elements are put out for free. I'm sorta rambling but the idea is similar to bill gates providing windows with every computer. Make sense? Not sure if I articulated properly.

I googled the problem and apparently is pretty common in debian 9.3 to freeze without any particular reason. So i was planning to change again its OS. Which one do you recommend me for this laptop?

I wanted to start using LaTeX cause as I know is way more comfortable and aesthetic than word for doing reports. I have windows in my laptop for now, so I proceed to install MiKTeX. Then, as far as i know, the best text editor is vim, so I installed it, but I got stuck when trying to install the LaTeX plugin (following this steps: http://vim-latex.sourceforge.net/index.php?subject=download&title=Download). As I understood, I have to edit the vimrc file (_vimrc in windows, i can also edit the _gvimrc file). I also read I should create a new file in $HOME, instead of editing the default _vimrc file. I created ~\_gvimrv.vim and followed the second step of the download page, but then when trying to make the third step it promped something like "E151 no match". Then I think (cause actually i'm not sure at all if i did it right lul) i installed vim-plug. I wrote in the _gvimrc file something like:

call plug#begin(~/vimfiles/autoload)

Plug 'vim-latex/vim-latex'

call plug#end()

I also installed this http://vim-latex.sourceforge.net/documentation/latex-suite.txt through the powershell. That's why i get the correct file when i do :help latex-suite.txt. Also, I guess that's why now when I do :helptags ~/vimfiles/doc nothing happens (as i said, it used to promp an error). I know that the plugin isn't installed cause when I open a .tex file nothing changes, I mean, I don't have the template option etc.

Also i forget to mention that when i enter the command :PlugInstall it promps "not an editor command". I read that in some cases installing git fix that problem, so I did that, but still without working.

Maybe I'm too stupid for doing this kind of thing cause literally I have been struggling with this for almost the whole day now.

Btw which LaTeX packages do you reccomend me for formulae? Cause I'm writing physics reports.

I have 14TB of existing TV/movies/anime/etc on my external HDDs. If I get vanned and refuse to give the police the encryption password then I face a 2 year jail sentence just for that.

I'm considering a seedbox for my ongoing downloads but the sheer quantity of existing content would make this very expensive even if I halved it in size by cutting the most easily redownloadable content. Consider plausible deniability encryption. You have an outer and an inner container, the inner one being entirely invisible and undetectable. If you're forced to decrypt, you can disclose a password, revealing only the outer container. For usage, you use a different password which decrypts the inner one. The inner one is nothing but empty space when viewed from outside, and in the outer one you place some non-incriminating but plausible files. Veracrypt has this feature for example.

It's annoying to restart my computer every 3 hours, I tried malwarebites and my antivirus on safemode and nothing shows up.

Is Proton on Linux really not an option? Make the switch if possible.

Should I buy a universal programmer? Part of me wants to get one so I can make my own genesis carts, build my own z80 computer, build my own homebrew cpu, port coreboot to my desktop, and if I'm feeling really ballsy, remap the fuel tables on my car. The other part calls the first part a lazy larper that even if he spends money on the programmer, still doesn't really have money to buy memory to program, and doesn't know jack shit about bioses.

What do you do to sanitize SSDs lads? Is ATA secure erase/sanitze good enough? I heard SSDs compress data, is that true? Does that mean that if you try to write all zeros to it, it won't actually fill up the space with zeros?

hey man, i don't know if you are still around, but I created f*ckbook account (i don't use fb) with protonmail, and then logged in to instagram, while using vpn or sometimes tor this whole time and it didn't ask for phone no verification once. Also make sure to set fb account like real one, eg uploading profile pic (ofcourse fake one).

tldr; use non-throwaway mail services to create fb account, then use insta.

hey anon, I don't think you are still dual booting windows, but I thought I might just throw it here.

It's a loophole I found in Bitdefender antivirus free trial, which is pretty based and which I used when I used windows.

So when you follow that link you will have to create a bitdefender account which you can create using services like inboxkitten.com temp mail services. Any way if you follow it through, you will get 3 month free trial, and then you can create another account and log out of previous one and like unlimited free trials.

Also I used to block all connections of windows os, and bitdefender with simplewall firewall software which is FOSS, and only allowed it when I needed to update bitdefender.

tldr; unlimited bitdefender premium free trials.

I got link from LTT.

I know I am replying to an old post, but whatever.

# creating list with each line as its element

with open('books.txt', 'r') as old:

lines = old.readlines()

with open('newbooks.txt', 'a') as new:

for i in lines:

# eliminating enter

if i[-1] == '\n':

i = i[:-1]

separated = i.split('by')

new_name = ''

# adding author name first

new_name += separated[-1].strip()

new_name += ' -'

for i in separated[:-1]:

new_name += ' '

new_name += i.strip()

new.write(new_name)

new.write('\n')

Create a new folder.

Create a file books.txt in that folder and copy all that book info in this file.

Create a main.py file in that folder and copy this code in that file.

Run main.py.

newbooks.txt will be created in that folder with required info.

Also I did some retarded shit like, taking care of shitty errors when 'by' is in the book title.

I am not an expert, but I think I know my shit.

Assuming you are using HTTPS version of this site, they can very easily know you are surfing this site, but actual data is encrypted. Your posts will go through the network encrypted. ISP won't have any idea about the boards or the threads you are visiting. But they will know you are using this site, as they will have to know this site address in order to send your requests here. This is mainly because if you are not using VPN, you are most like using the DNS resolver provided by your ISP, which basically converts human readable web addresses like lukesmith.xyz into IP addresses which are then used to send and receive packet from a site. But if you use other secure DNS resolvers, all your ISP sees is the IP you are connecting to as your custom DNS resolvers eg cloudflare has already converted lukesmith.xyz to IP address. But many time they can figure out from IP address that you are connecting to what site.

VPNs are good shit for these things, but TOR is based. If you use VPN, all you traffic will first go through VPN's server, and if you use HTTPS sites, then they will have no idea what you are sending or receiving, or to whom you are sending your requests. So, basically if you surf r*ddit, or yt or 8chan over HTTPS protocol, it will be nearly indistinguishable to them ie you ISP.

tldr; HTTP sites, they know what specific web addresses you are visiting.

HTTPS sites, they only know which website you are visiting.

HTTPS with VPN with non-ISP DNS, they almost have no clue.

VPN recommedation, ProtonVPN. I am not endorsing it, it is what I use. It offers free service and 7 day free trial. It's FOSS, and has no logging policy.

You can setup custom DNS resolvers for android and for specific browsers.

Let me know if you want to correct me or if you need my help.

I don't play video games so I don't know much about it, but switch to Linux if possible. It's awesome.

Also, no problem if you want to stay on windows, just use simplewall to block all connections to windows update servers and telemetry to stop auto updates.

Assuming you don't go to sketchy sites, you have very little chance of getting malware, so once in a while, if you are free, you can disable simplewall and update your OS when you want. Updating is also necessary.

Attaching cell adaptor (sim card reader for 4g and sat) to the GPIO pins on a Raspberry Pi; do all makes use all 20 pins?

I can only find 20 pin models, but I distinctly remember older Pi's had only 16 pins. Were there no cell adaptors for these?

If I want to build a self contained sensor reading unit (with 4g/3g to email the sensor data as CSV or whatever) would I have to use one Pi as a router and another to attach sensors to the GPIO pins?

Can anyone recommend some Dark Web drugs markets which are less likely to take my bitcoins and run?

I'm in the UK (NI) if that makes a difference. Been looking at the new Silk Road and the sites linked on the Hidden Wiki but its hard to part with so much cash with not even a recommendation to go by.

Any advice much appreciated.

How do I get a certain linux vpn software from turning off after a period of time? Luckily it doesn't leak but it DC's me from the net and I have to run it again. I remember solving this before with what I think was some systemctl command but it reverted back for whatever reason and its not in my console history. I'm on arch and i installed the vpn with snap.
