dc2e6c No.25046 [Open thread][Last50 Posts]

I thought we gonna have a thread like this. Buckle up for my hot takes:

- most of the dialog on ST is really clumsy and I find this to be irksome. While there are certainly good monologs, dual exchanges in ST always feel awkward and awfully infantile. It's like every character is constantly in exposition mode and the audience is never required to pick up on clues.

- Let's be honest, besides very fee exceptions like "The Visitor" most of the non-story episodes of DS9 are a snoozefest and filler. There is also zero exploration despite the station being situated next to a wormhole carrying them to the other end of the galaxy.

- despite being a boring movie, ST:TMP was the most Trekish movie, especially with its aesthetic.

- there is never going to be another "real" Trek series, ever. DS9 and even VOY despite its flaws were the last ones. This is because of the industry. Shows these days are all about "personal drama", superficial core issues, Chinese fortune cookie wisdoms in dialog form, massive pressure to have the ratings after season 1, constant SJW quota fullfullment, fast pace so the consumerist audience doesn't get bored. The only chance ever for another decent Trek series would be a completely independent project, non-profit, with crowdfunding. However, you'd catch Aids nonetheless due to the retarded Trekkie community, which would have the main influence over the show.

- post-First Contact uniforms are the best ones. DS9 would be way more enjoyable from the beginning if Avery Brooks shaved his head and got that uniform from the beginning.

- Also, Avery Brooks is a horrible actor.

- despite being left-liberal in tone, there are plenty of episodes that are quite American with neoconservative undertones. In the Pale Moonlight is basically a justification for a false flag to start a war. Old Klingons resemble the Japanese. ST VI was about the end of the Cold War with the Klangs selling out their own country for a Pizza Hut like Gorbachev.

>Unpopular Opinions

You wouldn't know it from this subreddit of zoomer poseurs but those are all fairly popular opinions. On every other trek board I've ever used (with the exception of the hyper-autismos on those 'trek vs wars'-type forums) people generally acknowledge that most trek series are mostly drek, with the 5%-10% of good episodes being such gold that it makes up for everything else. It's always love/hate.

>>30525

You're the worst poster on this fucking board and it would be fine if you left forever. I really wouldn't mind.

You can't fucking invoke time travel to somehow be right when someone posts a valid counter-argument to your bullshit, dude.

TOS had more to do with the cold war than anything else and there are a million interviews with the creators that confirm this.

The Vietnam war in particular was ~kind of a big fucking deal~, and the propaganda of the time was informed by, yes, some residual WW2 japan bullshit, but largely they were a mainland "yellow horde" with echos of hundreds of years of the exact imperial rivalry that TOS went out of its way to reflect. Mongols are a much more logical counterpart to Space Romans and that IRL history is absolutely central to the development of european imperialism and the circumstances leading up to the World Wars themselves. That east vs west paradigm is crucial to western history and is largely what framed perceptions of the japanese in the first place, right down to the pointy tails.

I'm well aware of the fact that TOS was heavily steeped in the Cold War, and I have not at any point contradicted this claim. This does not change the fact that, in the formative parts of their worldbuilding–including the TOS films, in which their uniforms were very reminiscent of feudal Japan–the Klingons were made to resemble the nips.

That isn't how it works. It's like saying Kelsey Grammar wasn't in Star Trek because he had a brief cameo when he was on set. It's not some 'they had an extra uniform and decided to stop the movie so Wil Wheaton could be in the film' bullshit. That's completely out of your ass.

It's very, very simple: he's onscreen in a Starfleet uniform. He's in Starfleet. You are being obtuse because you want to believe something retarded.

Personally, I can't accept Nemesis as canon. I don't mean that I have some highfalutin reason to reject it, just that I can't watch it and process it as actual Star Trek. I only see the actors in make up pretending to do Star Trek. It's like the fictional equivalent of derealization disorder or something.

I can't reject Nemesis as canon because there's no concrete reason to; "it's utter garbage" isn't one.

Fortunately, since it comes last chronologically out of all canon material (aside from some brief time travel that reveals nothing), it can easily be ignored.

>In a 2012 convention appearance, Wil Wheaton talked about his appearance in this film. According to Wheaton, he found out about it and that it was going to be the last one after a chance run-in with LeVar Burton and that it was Burton who went to the producers and asked that Wheaton be included in the film. Wheaton said that only a few days later, his agent got an offer from Paramount to appear in the film and Wheaton agreed without even knowing what he would be doing, only that he would be again portraying Wesley Crusher. Wheaton also said that he asked John Logan what Wesley was doing there, was he still a Traveler and just visiting or had he stopped traveling and returned to Starfleet? Wheaton said that Logan told him he didn't have an opportunity in the script to decide that one way or the other and it really didn't matter as far as the rest of the film went and that it would just have to be one of those things left to the audience to decide which would be the case.

Straight from the faggot's soy-filled mouth. Wheaton didn't even know he was going to be in the movie and Burton was the one who asked the producers to include him.

Overall, I can tolerate Discovery, it's not the worst show I've ever watched, but every time I see this cunt and hear her speak, I want to turn the show off.

Her "mwahaha so evil" attitude is intolerable, mostly because it's not at all played for laughs, and instead for some sort of weird badass factor, making it just embarrassing to listen to.

>What has that to do with Marxism?

Bolsheviks have gained a foothold in most major marketing and PR departments, and they'll often use their positions to virtue-signal and create content they think people should like, rather than content that people do like. You certainly can't attribute the vast number of interracial couples present in advertisements to consumer preferences; it's not at all a popular pairing outside of media. In any case, your argument is irrelevant because there's never been any indication that token sheboons bring in the negro audience. Negros want to watch negro things, not white things with some melanin sprinkled in. Attempts to "diversify" the cast only serve to alienate the primary demographic; the faggots and niggers don't care, and the left-wing harpies who call for diversity in [x] never consume [x] themselves. Since this strategy does not make money, clearly some motive beyond profit is involved.

>Unless, of course, you believe there is a secret plan of Jews to cuck the white race.

It need not need be a plan–whether through conspiracy or individual action, it's happening–and it certainly isn't a secret. Anti-white, anti-male rhetoric is all around you, and you just need to start looking at the bylines of the articles to see disproportionate Jewish involvement in this rhetoric.

>In the US, being Jewish isn't any different from being white in the overall socio-economic dynamics of society

Don't be retarded. Jews have clearly and repeatedly shown themselves to act in ways distinct from the white demographic, namely in the policies and ideals which they try to promote. The kikes also display a high in-group preference for other kikes.

I've got no problem with other factions being more powerful than the protagonists, otherwise things tend to get fairly boring. But when you have entities like the Q, or the Douwd who barely even need to think about something to make it happen then things get boring very quickly unless the writers can find a reason to not have these godlike entities to just be incredibly lazy/not give a fuck.

Everything has its place. Many Lovecraftian entities are effectively 'kill you with a look' type creatures.

Yeah, but you are still limiting them to some kind of balance, which isn't all that interesting either. The point is in science fiction you will sometimes have very advanced entities and how you handle such beings is a pertinent question.

>surely I'm not the only one who doesn't want more Tom Bombadil expies in fiction

Couldn't disagree more. Tom Bombadil was a good addition to Middle Earth for the simple reason that the hobbits passed through where Tolkien thought he lived. He didn't adhere to a narrative of tropes, but tried to map what would happen on the route through his existing world.

There is a place for very powerful entities in fiction. Having everything be a mundane character balanced like WoW classes would get old fast.

I'd argue that with Lovecraftian entities/monsters the entire point is that the omnipotent (by human standards at least) gribblies are completely horrifying and impossible to cope with; even the knowledge that they exist is dangerous to the protagonists. I also can't remember a single story written by Lovecraft where the human characters had a particularly good time of it.

That actually gives us a much more interesting way to approach the idea. Think about it, an entity like Q is terrifying, maybe not to the 'drives strong men to madness' level but if he was real and we knew about him he would scare the shit out of us. We're talking about an entity who would be fully capable of rewriting the flow of all history in the universe on a whim if he felt like it, and the only motivation he seems to respond to is 'I'm bored and it was funny'. You could get an entire show out of a team of SF intelligence and planning officers trying to build up a profile, threat assessment, and response plan to Q.

>Tom Bombadil was a good addition to Middle Earth for the simple reason that the hobbits passed through where Tolkien thought he lived

Tom Bombadil just about worked in LOTR because he was A) an integral part of a world that had more thought put into it than all of Star Trek, Star Wars, and most modern sci-fi put together, and B) because it played very strongly to the themes that Tolkien was working with/exploring. Even with that though the character raises more problems than seems to be worthwhile, to me at least. Putting 'Tom Bombadil, but without the thought, purpose, or thematic justification' into a work is sloppy even by the standards of low budget TV.

Since they're remastering a few scenes for the documentary, one of the VFX artists who worked on the show has been doing a remaster of one of the CGI shots from DS9. It's still a work in progress but I think it looks pretty good.

i like it

>>29963

it seems like an easy fix. it is too bright, literally just lower the brightness a little bit.

i've probably seen all of DS9 atleast 5 times but I always get the feeling that some of these

scenes are off. Its too clear that it's just models being used. Not even the larger battles, anything where these ship models are being used, you can tell they lacked the budget to make it look decent, but there are a lot of fleet battles in DS9 that look especially off.

You don't get that feeling in the TOS movies, they spent the time to make it look good. TNG suffers from the same problem.

This remaster also took the time to make the scene look identical, which must have took some time. I'm sure there are differences if you look at it frame by frame but they didn't just say fuck it and change it to something easier, they took the time to actually replicate it, which is great.

I don't want to see the original versions wiped from history though, which often happens when these "remasters" come out.

>MAXIMUM BUMP TOLERANCE EXCEEDED, CAPTAIN!

STD Season One Recap:

Michael Burnham is the greatest starfleet officer in history. She knows literally everything and can solve any problem presented to her with consummate ease and no small amount of condescension. She was adopted as a child by Spock's parents because there were no other foster parents available out of trillions of Federation citizens but those of Star Trek's most iconic character (who never mentioned an adopted sister in 50 years of canon). The greatest starfleet officer in history commits a mutiny which ends up killing her captain and single-handedly plunges the Federation into war with Klingons (who are now bald xenophobes obsessed with racial purity). Instead of serving her lifetime prison term, Michael is recruited as a science specialist on the secretive USS Discovery, the most advanced ship in the fleet which boasts holographic systems that shouldn't exist for decades, and an experimental "spore drive" that can teleport the ship instantly to any point in the galaxy over a "mycelial network" of space mushrooms. They briefly use a giant tardigrade as their navigator until someone found out that the whole concept of tardigrades teleporting via space mushrooms was plagiarized from an indie video adventure game called motherfucking "Tardigrades." Good job CBS.

Among the crew members of the Discovery are Captain Lorca: a no-nonsense hard-ass with a shady past who plays fast and loose with regulations and might be a little too trigger-happy for a starfleet captain. The alien first officer is Saru, who can sense danger and death approaching, and is from a species comprised entirely of betas. Chief Engineer Stamets is in charge of the spore drive and becomes its navigator after the tardigrade is sued out of a job. The medical officer is Dr. Culber who is gay with Stamets and is currently deceased and/or a spore ghost inside the mycelial network. And then there's Tilly: a hyperactive, overweight, autistic ensign completely unsuited for service on starfleet's most advanced, experimental starship, but is nonetheless inexplicably part of the command track program. God save the poor vessel that sees Tilly as her captain. There's a bunch of other characters that make up the bridge crew, butPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

There is nothing wrong with wearing a tunic in space. The only problem with his is that it's way too tight, but that was everybody in season 1 TNG. It would be comfy as fuck to wear a slightly loose tunic while you're toiling away at a terminal waiting to die.
