>Picard: had a Bajoran on his ship for like a season before she left

<Sisko: life revolves around Bajorans every day, can't get away from them even after his apotheosis

>Picard: chief engineer can see a much wider spectrum of light than normal humans, a very useful tool for diagnosing issues with the ship

<Sisko: chief engineer is Irish

>Picard: Ship full of families; he knows nobody will fuck with him anyway

<Sisko: Ship has no room for families because he's still traumatized by the time Picard killed his wife

>Picard: invents new combat tactics that bear his name

<Sisko: Learned about ship-to-ship combat from Star Wars and completely fails to take advantage of the nature of starships

>Picard: ship gets destroyed, he gets a newer, fancier one and the next in a proud lineage

<Sisko: ship gets destroyed, he gets one of the same class, temporarily renamed, and without even a letter at the end

Trivia from What You Leave Behind

>The producers also toyed with the idea of ending the series with a shot of Benny Russell sitting outside a television sound stage holding a script for "Deep Space Nine" – essentially making the series, and possibly the whole of Star Trek, Benny's dreams and/or writings.

Can you imagine the shitstorms that would've happened if they went with this idea?

I don't like either much, but Sisko was definitely the better leader and had more moxy, although Picard did have the cooler voice I guess. Sisko also gets bonus points for making Q fuck off. That twat was probably the worst Trek character, made only worse by how unironically pompous he was and kept being responsible for so much important shit that really didn't need explaining. Fuck, they even found a way to make the worst of Q even worse through all the shitty 90s and 2000s comics and novels that kept trying to pin every fucking notable character and event of importance in the universe to Q and his shitty continuum.

<OMG EVERY SINGLE ENERGY BEING IN TOS WAS THERE THANKS TO Q OR WERE MEMBERS OF THE Q CONTINUUM

<Q AND HIS CONTINUUM LITERALLY SUMMONED/CREATED SOME OF THE MOST POWERFUL PEOPLE IN THE UNIVERSE

<Q WAS ACTUALLY TRELANE'S BABYSITTER!

Fuck off with that Q shit.

But back to the main topic, the Cardassians were the true heroes of DS9, and they, Kirk, Pike and even Archer are more Chad-like than those two. Hell, Kirk would've outright found a way to get rid of Q once and for all and expose him as the cheap 30 year old charlatan that he really was while telling everyone at the space bar how Q still lives with his Q Momma and how lame his parlor tricks were.

This is such a retarded interpretation. He punches Q and Q basically says he's even more of a wuss than Picard is. Doe anyone truly believe Q wouldn't just annihilate him if he felt like it?

It's pretty clear that Q didn't leave Sisko alone because he was scared of Sisko, he just realised that he wasn't as easy to bait as Picuck - all told I think that's a point in Sisko's favour

>I think that's a point in Sisko's favour

god finds him unstimulating. I'm not sure that's a virtue

Although it's fitting. Picard was always willing to stand for humanity and represent what he thought was best in us, with his unwavering confidence in our potential. Meanwhile Sisko was just kind of… a bureaucrat who ran a shopping mall.

I'm not sure why Q bothered in the first place except that maybe he thought "well if they're making a series starring this guy now I might as well check him out"

No. Sisko isn't as easy to fuck around with. Picard is a fucking idiot who easily gets baited by the cosmic equivalent of the schoolyard prankster who desperately wants everyone to think he's the principal.

>>29962

Q isn't even that deep of a character. He's just a shittier version of far better energy being characters from TOS. Even Trelane was more complex, initially being portrayed as having some deeper motive only to later be exposed as a juvenile demigod. And the reason Q bothered with him in the first place is simple: the writers wanted to do another fucking TNG tie-in.

Have you guys forgotten the Picard in First Contact who tells Worf that he's a pussy and turns into a no-surrender warmonger? Granted, this was likely influenced by Sisko as the writers saw who well a more pissed captain who yells at his own people works.

>No. Sisko isn't as easy to fuck around with.

Picard was more interesting to Q. That's why he helped him out so often. Sisko was a bore.

The real reason Q wasn't on DS9 more is he fucks up the importance of the Prophets, and having him show up during the Dominion War would undercut everything.

The problem with things like the Dominion or Borg is that you have to forget about all the ultra powerful energy beings that hang out in the galaxy, like the Organians who would most definitely object to the Dominion's attitude.

Every other week the enterprise would encounter some uber powerful entity like Kevin Uxbridge. How the bellicose Dominion didn't get its shit pushed in by an energy being race (or the Klingons or Romulans for that matter) is unbelievable.

An episode where you saw the Dominion deal with those types of races and basically act very placating and reasonable would have been interesting.

TBH it sounds a lot more like a problem with inserting 'Omnipotent Super-entity number 'n+1' into your setting. Unless a major point of your show is something pointless and navel gazey about that omnipotent superbeing.

It's fairly accurate to have alien races more advanced than yours, some incomprehensibly so. What doesn't work is then saying people at rough technological parity with you are major powers in the galaxy.

I've got no problem with other factions being more powerful than the protagonists, otherwise things tend to get fairly boring. But when you have entities like the Q, or the Douwd who barely even need to think about something to make it happen then things get boring very quickly unless the writers can find a reason to not have these godlike entities to just be incredibly lazy/not give a fuck.

Everything has its place. Many Lovecraftian entities are effectively 'kill you with a look' type creatures.

Yeah, but you are still limiting them to some kind of balance, which isn't all that interesting either. The point is in science fiction you will sometimes have very advanced entities and how you handle such beings is a pertinent question.

>surely I'm not the only one who doesn't want more Tom Bombadil expies in fiction

Couldn't disagree more. Tom Bombadil was a good addition to Middle Earth for the simple reason that the hobbits passed through where Tolkien thought he lived. He didn't adhere to a narrative of tropes, but tried to map what would happen on the route through his existing world.

There is a place for very powerful entities in fiction. Having everything be a mundane character balanced like WoW classes would get old fast.

I'd argue that with Lovecraftian entities/monsters the entire point is that the omnipotent (by human standards at least) gribblies are completely horrifying and impossible to cope with; even the knowledge that they exist is dangerous to the protagonists. I also can't remember a single story written by Lovecraft where the human characters had a particularly good time of it.

That actually gives us a much more interesting way to approach the idea. Think about it, an entity like Q is terrifying, maybe not to the 'drives strong men to madness' level but if he was real and we knew about him he would scare the shit out of us. We're talking about an entity who would be fully capable of rewriting the flow of all history in the universe on a whim if he felt like it, and the only motivation he seems to respond to is 'I'm bored and it was funny'. You could get an entire show out of a team of SF intelligence and planning officers trying to build up a profile, threat assessment, and response plan to Q.

>Tom Bombadil was a good addition to Middle Earth for the simple reason that the hobbits passed through where Tolkien thought he lived

Tom Bombadil just about worked in LOTR because he was A) an integral part of a world that had more thought put into it than all of Star Trek, Star Wars, and most modern sci-fi put together, and B) because it played very strongly to the themes that Tolkien was working with/exploring. Even with that though the character raises more problems than seems to be worthwhile, to me at least. Putting 'Tom Bombadil, but without the thought, purpose, or thematic justification' into a work is sloppy even by the standards of low budget TV.
