Since they're remastering a few scenes for the documentary, one of the VFX artists who worked on the show has been doing a remaster of one of the CGI shots from DS9. It's still a work in progress but I think it looks pretty good.

tbqh if I were to direct a DS9 remaster I would rewrite and rearrange all the battle scenes from the ground up.

I expected the live action stuff to be cleaned up better tbh. The CGI part looked amazing.

>redo fleet battles

I agree. Star Trek didn't do fleet battles correctly until Enterprise when CGI became an ordinary tool for tv IMO.

lolwut? Best battle scenes in almost all of SciFi history were the battles in the TOS movies (Mutara Nebula, Genesis, Kitomer) where they had enough budget to make them look good but still had to craft all the ship models from hand.

I'll admit it looks much better. I'm still against it. They need to leave shit be. They only real reason they do this shit is so that they can convince people to buy another copy. I refuse to watch remastered TOS for the same reason. I want to see the show that captured the imaginations of nerds back in the 60's, not what some soyboy thinks it should have looked like.

Who watches strek for the VFX? While it's nice to see DS9 getting some love and attention again, I'd much rather that they used that money to either make a new series, or to buy enough 3rd world child slaves to provide a suitable number of human sacrifices to get the gods to fix STD. I'm aware that lack of budget isn't STDs problem, but maybe they could fire everyone involved and hire an entirely new director, writers, actors, maybe even a few new producers - dare we dream

Cant say i dislike it, though i thought they would do a better scan of the original negatives, at least they aren't messing with it, it looks as if its a re-render, which i'm shocked they can do.

>>30065

as much as i 98% agree, i can see it having a place, if they don't make the originals unavailable, that's the shit that pisses me off

>Who watches strek for the VFX?

This. Star Trek is about people, not spaceships. While a cool space battle is fun every once in a while, it's at best just an element to tie the plot together, not the plot itself. Any shot that doesn't have a person in it is essentially just filler. Done correctly, a battle can be compelling without a single ship on screen, and in many ways having them can be even be distracting.

I always keep going back to that early scene in First Contact. Yeah, the battle against the Borg cube was cool to watch when the Enterprise gets there, but it doesn't hold a candle to the very beginning. When the Enterprise bridge taps into the comm frequency, and all you do is just LISTEN. The commanders directing the ships into position, the calls for battle stations, the shit-your-pants "We are the Borg" hail silencing all else for a moment, then the sounds of explosions, screams, casualty reports, hull breaches; and the entire time the camera is going between the faces of the bridge officers, as they turn from tense apprehension to abject horror because it's all going to Hell. It's visceral. You feel it, instead of just seeing it. And all this accomplished without a single visual effect. They could have done the scene differently; they probably had the budget and could have had the action on screen instead of just audio. But they chose not to, and it's so much more effective done this way.

The guy was the supervisor for that sequence and he kept the files with him for all these years.

Sure but if there's an opportunity for a remaster then why wouldn't they try to adjust the CGI scenes? If I'm not mistaken by the end of DS9 they were using CGI

Even the action oriented episodes in TOS and even TNG it was sort of done the way you described. You felt the tension inside the ship, with the crew. DS9 ruined Trek combat for good. Enterprise somewhat managed to slowly go back to it unintentionally but didn't quite make it.

Do you think the wormhole aliens actually reversed that brainwashing they gave him, like they claimed to have?

Did that female really convince him to destroy everything, or did the Prophets manipulate his mind to prime him for it, knowing from their non-perception of time that she would arrive to give him the small extra push he needed, while also ensuring they wouldn't be bothered by other Ferengi like the first time?

Think about it, why would any Ferengi (let alone the Grand Nagus) take any advice from a fe-male? Even one who had been shown to be financially competent (remember folks, outliers are to be expected). Zeks flip only makes sense if the Wormhole Aliens left some deep rooted, manchurian candidate style, programming deep in his head for Moogi to take advantage of later. It's not like planning that kind of coincidence would be particularly difficult for aliens who see the past, present, and future simultaneously. It's just another bit of proof that 40k has something to teach us about interspecies diplomacy.

On the contrary: the Prophets restored Zek to his original self. Including his chronic horniness.

But what really ruined the Ferengi was "Ishka".

Y'see, as 'The Quickening' showed, The Dominion is fond of elaborate and cruel punishments. And, the first civilisation from the Alpha Quadrant to make first contact was the Ferengi. Thus, they needed to be punished.

And the method of punishment was "Ishka". She was supplanted by a Changeling. That time on 'The Magnificent Ferengi' when Nog did the knife test on her? Grandpa Sisko was right: the changeling simply released some of the stored blood of Ishka.

When the changeling was taken to Ferenginar, it used Ishka's influence on Zek to destroy their society: Zek was just a horny goof.

But the Ferengi were also the only AQ race to make sure they weren't stepping on any Dominion toes, instead of barging in and planting colonies everywhere.

it seems like an easy fix. it is too bright, literally just lower the brightness a little bit.

i've probably seen all of DS9 atleast 5 times but I always get the feeling that some of these

scenes are off. Its too clear that it's just models being used. Not even the larger battles, anything where these ship models are being used, you can tell they lacked the budget to make it look decent, but there are a lot of fleet battles in DS9 that look especially off.

You don't get that feeling in the TOS movies, they spent the time to make it look good. TNG suffers from the same problem.

This remaster also took the time to make the scene look identical, which must have took some time. I'm sure there are differences if you look at it frame by frame but they didn't just say fuck it and change it to something easier, they took the time to actually replicate it, which is great.

I don't want to see the original versions wiped from history though, which often happens when these "remasters" come out.
