Yep. If you don't eat alot of legumes and beans in your diet, it takes some getting used to. Cooking with dried beans also takes some practice to get right.

SpouseAnon is a huge meat eater and would be happy on solely the carnivore diet but when we were first married our budget didnt allow that, so I had to get creative.

Now dried beans and legumes are a big part of our long term storage preps, have been for years, and the family now has some favs, like cassoulet with duck breast and bacon. Cuban black beans and rice with leftover cuban pork is a crowd fav too.

The time to start is now, before it's no longer an optional learning exercise. Making sure that your family has adequate protein every day is important.

During the Q&A after yesterday's presser, POTUS was asked about the food supply. The MSM is trying to gin up fear over the food supply and create panic. POTUS responded the food supply is fine. One way to tamp down panic and fear is to feel prepared for contingencies. It is a confidence booster, and helps you help others in your community/circle.

One year we had purchased a 1/4 beef and 1/2 hog and had (fortunately) a short power outage. I realized how much money we would lose if we had lost our huge chest freezer full of meat, which had consumed a huge part of our budget. This created a level of fear, panic and uncertainty. One way I dealt with that was to learn how to pressure can meat at home. I had already pressure canned vegetables and fruits from our garden, and had been hot water bath canning as well, but had always been too afraid/intimidated to try pressure canning meat.

It takes some trial and error, so I wanted to "learn" before it became a necessary skill. I'm now a "meat pressure canning expert". Our pantry is stocked with pressure canned pork, beef, chicken etc. I can in jars of various sizes. Individual size, for two and for four. Pressured canned meatloaf turns out amazing!

Grow a victory garden - even if it's a small container on an apt balcony

Learn how to can and if you can afford it, pressure can your own meat that you can safely store for up to a year

Learn how to incorporate alternative sources of protein into your diet

Buy in bulk, store in vaccuum sealed smaller bags and cost share the bulk purchase with family members or neighbors

Start small in building your TEOTWAWKI pantry - buy an extra canned protein, or can of soup etc each week as your budget allows. BOGO deals if your neighborhood supermarket does them is a great way to start building a TEOTWAWKI pantry.

Judy Mikovits, PhD is a biochemist and molecular biologist with more than 33 years of experience. Internationally known, a veritable “rock star” of the scientific world, she served as the director of the lab of Antiviral Drug Mechanisms at the National Cancer Institute before directing the Cancer Biology program at EpiGenX Pharmaceuticals. She later developed the first neuroimmune institute. Her early work focused on cancer and HIV, her latest on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and autism. She has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles.

In 2011, she made the discovery that destroyed her career. She found that at least 30% of our vaccines are contaminated with gammaretroviruses. Brantly was caring for sick Ebola patients with the aid group Samaritan's Purse in Monrovia, Liberia, when he became the first American diagnosed with Ebola in late July. His condition was worsening before he was flown to the United States in an air ambulance, but before he left, one of his former patients, a 14-year-old Ebola survivor, gave him "a unit of blood" for a transfusion, according to Samaritan's Purse.

Since his recovery and release from Emory University Hospital on Aug. 21, Brantly has donated his plasma to Samaritan's Purse colleague Dr. Rick Sacra and freelance cameraman Ashoka Mukpo, both of whom were receiving treatment for Ebola at Nebraska Medical Center. They received his plasma transfusions on or around Sept. 11 and Oct. 8, respectively – about 27 days apart. The latest American Ebola patient, Dallas nurse Nina Pham, who contracted the virus while treating Thomas Eric Duncan, received a blood donation of some kind from Brantly, according to health officials.

Plasma is a component of blood that contains virus-fighting proteins called antibodies. When someone donates plasma, their blood is drawn into a machine that separates out the plasma and returns the red blood cells to the donor.

"There is a strong theoretical possibility that this could help, particularly if this is given early," said Dr. William Schaffner, chair of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Here's how it works: When confronted with a virus, the immune system creates antibodies to specifically target that virus, kill it and keep it from coming back, he said. Once a person has antibodies, they stay in their blood for life. If the Ebola antibodies found in an Ebola survivor's blood can be imported into struggling Ebola patient's body, those antibodies can theoretically help the patient's immune system fight off the deadly virus.

"What those antibodies do is bind to the virus," Schaffner said. "They find the virus and bind to it and prevent it from multiplying further."

The only time we wear sunscreen is when we’re going to be outside in a sunny day for a long period of time with no way of seeking shade (so it’s rare). We don’t lay out and bake ourselves. It used to be prescribed in child rearing years ago— my mom would let me nap in the sun for a short while each day as a baby.

I used to live in SF and the Chinese women were so the opposite- sunscreen, hats, covered and even had umbrellas. I always wondered how that worked for them, but they eat a lot of fish.

This is the time of year to find a CSA and sign up for a membership, because farmers are making their planting plans. Many make their plans centered around how many members they have signed up, committed to regular delivery, etc.

We helped our local CSA farmer one season when he couldn't find enough help to get him through the peak seasons. He taught our kids how to safely and humanely slaughter free range chickens for a contract for a high end hotel he had, and they got paid in chickens that weren't "pretty" enough to send to the hotel chef. Good times.

This. It can be daunting as it’s more expensive but you will save money in the long run. The key is to start small and not sign up for more than your family can eat - or split it w family or friends. Fresh stuff is more perishable and it can be hard initially to estimate how much you all will eat but give it a try, It’s so rewarding.
