EDINBURGH — Martin Kingston is a captain of industry who has also used his power to lobby for political change. The chief executive officer of Rothschild & Co’s South Africa unit is stepping down to a quieter role and plans to use his extra time to improve the economic fabric of the country. Kingston, deputy leader of Business Unity South Africa, has already been pushing for job creation as well as an end to mass retrenchments. But who is Martin Kingston? The Mail & Guardian gave some glimpses into the media shy business mover-and-shaker in 2006, observing that he has been one of the most powerful players in BEE. This is because “empowerment terrain is one where the big investment banks, more often than not, control the purse-strings in marriages – whether out of convenience or romance – between the emerging players of the new elite and established companies”. The M&G highlights that Kingston has actively courted politicians, even marrying into South Africa’s political elite. His first wife, Tembi Tambo’s parents were Oliver and Adelaide Tambo, and his second wife, Pulane Kingston, is the daughter of former Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang and ANC treasurer general Mendi Msimang, both of whom have died. Rothschild’s Kingston to Help South Africa State Firm Rescue

(Bloomberg) –Martin Kingston, who on April 1 steps down as chief executive officer of Rothschild & Co.’s South African unit after 13 years, wants to help revive the country’s beleaguered state-owned companies.

Kingston, 61, will shift to executive chairman of the investment bank’s unit, and plans to wind down his executive responsibilities over the next two years before getting more involved with advising and mobilising resources and skills for South Africa’s public sector. He already sits on the board of struggling South African Airways and is vice president of Business Unity South Africa, a lobby group.

“I don’t think we mobilise adequate resources to support some of the public companies that are facing very challenging circumstances,” Kingston said in an interview on Monday. “If there is a role for me to play I would frankly welcome it.”

South Africa’s state-owned companies became beset by skills shortages, unsustainable debt and bloated work forces during the nine-year tenure of former president Jacob Zuma, which ended in February last year. The country suffers regular power outages, a dysfunctional commuter train system and almost daily corruption scandals related to the firms. New president Cyril Ramaphosa has removed the boards of some of the companies and vowed to make them more efficient and stamp out corruption.

The President of Tanzania John Magufuli did not trust the World Health Organization or their coronavirus testing.

So President Magufuli submitted several samples to the WHO for testing.

President Magufuli: We took samples from goats. We sent samples from sheeps. We took samples from pawpaws. We sent samples from car oil. And we took samples from other different things. And we took the samples to the laboratory without them knowing. And we even named all the samples. Like the sample of car oil. We named it Jabil Hamza, 30 years old, male. The results came back negative. When we took a sample from a Jackfruit (Durian) we named it Sarah Samuel, 45 years old, female. The results came back inconclusive. When we took samples from a Pawpaw we named it Elizabeth Ane, 26 years old, female. The result from the Pawpaw came back positive that it has corona. That means the liquid from a pawpaw is positive. We took samples from (a bird) called Kware. The results came back positive. We took samples from a rabbit. The results came back undeterminent. We took samples from a goat and the results came back positive. We took samples from a sheep and it came back negative and so on and so on. And so now you see this you have taken samples and the results come back positive and they have the corona. That means all the pawpaws should be in isolation also… The goat should be in isolation also.

Prior to Lana Marks, there was Patrick Gaspard who served from 2013-2016 as US Ambassador to South Africa during the Obama administration. Out of curiosity, I did some research of African countries that seemed to have a “Y” in their flags. When I looked at the small country of Equitorial Guinea, the “government is authoritarian and has one of the worst human rights records in the world, consistently ranking among the "worst of the worst" in Freedom House's annual survey of political and civil rights. Reporters Without Borders ranks President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo among its "predators" of press freedom.[17] Human trafficking is a significant problem; the 2012 U.S. Trafficking in Persons Report stated that Equatorial Guinea "is a source and destination for women and children subjected to forced labour and forced sex trafficking." UANI claimed that MTN’s technology was allowing the Iranian government to locate and track individual cell phone users. To make matters worse for the company, Chris Kilowan a former MTN executive in Iran, alleged that MTN was complicit in securing telecommunications technology from Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard and Cisco Systems for the Iranian government, in contravention of international sanctions.”
