Assange judge is 40-year “good friend” of minister who orchestrated his arrest

Julian Assange’s fate lies in the hands of an appeal judge who is a close friend of Sir Alan Duncan - the former foreign minister who called Assange a “miserable little worm” in parliament.

Lord Chief Justice Ian Burnett, the judge that will soon decide Julian Assange’s fate, is a close personal friend of Sir Alan Duncan, who as foreign minister arranged Assange’s eviction from the Ecuadorian embassy.

The two have known each other since their student days at Oxford in the 1970s, when Duncan called Burnett “the Judge”. Burnett and his wife attended Duncan’s birthday dinner at a members-only London club in 2017, when Burnett was a judge at the court of appeal.

Now the most powerful judge in England and Wales, Burnett will soon rule on Assange’s extradition case. The founder of WikiLeaks faces life imprisonment in the US.

In his recently published diaries, In The Thick of It, Duncan wrote in July 2017: “My good friend and Oxford contemporary Ian Burnett is announced as the next Lord Chief Justice.”

He continued: “At Oxford we always called him ‘the Judge’ and they always called me ‘Prime Minister’, but Ian’s the one who’s got there.”

In an emailed response to Declassified, Lord Chief Justice Burnett confirmed he and Duncan have been “friends since university days”.

Duncan studied politics and economics at St John’s College, Oxford from 1976-79, while Burnett studied jurisprudence at Pembroke College in the same period.

Duncan’s diaries also show that as foreign minister he spoke privately to Lord Chief Justice Burnett in May 2019, a conversation that was not logged in government records. Burnett briefed him on a dinner he’d had with then prime minister Theresa May two days before.

But Duncan told Declassified: “There was nothing that was required to be ‘logged in government records’.” He and Burnett both said nothing related to their roles as a minister or judge was discussed.

Duncan served as foreign minister for Europe and the Americas from 2016-19. He was the key official in the UK government campaign to force Assange from the embassy.

As minister, Duncan did not hide his opposition to Julian Assange, calling him a “miserable little worm” in parliament in March 2018.

In his diaries, Duncan refers to the “supposed human rights of Julian Assange”. He admits to arranging a Daily Mail hit piece on Assange that was published the day after the journalist’s arrest in April 2019.

Duncan watched UK police pulling the WikiLeaks publisher from the Ecuadorian embassy via a live-feed in the Operations Room at the top of the Foreign Office.

He later admitted he was “trying to keep the smirk off [his] face”, and hosted drinks at his parliamentary office for the team involved in the eviction.

Duncan then flew to Ecuador to meet President Lenín Moreno in order to “say thank you” for handing over Assange. Duncan reported he gave Moreno “a beautiful porcelain plate from the Buckingham Palace gift shop.”

“Job done,” he added.

“Generous present”

Duncan’s diaries also highlight a birthday dinner held for him in June 2017 that was attended by Burnett and his wife. The dinner, held at the private Beefsteak club in London the day before the general election, was a “generous present from David Ross”, Duncan noted.

Ross, a businessman and co-founder of Carphone Warehouse, has funded an array of Conservative MPs, including Duncan, and gave the Conservative Party £250,000 to fight the 2019 election.

Other guests included the Syrian-Saudi billionaire businessman Wafic Saïd. Long close to the Saudi royal family, Saïd helped negotiate the massive UK-Saudi arms deal known as al-Yamamah in the 1980s.

Saïd’s wife, Rosemary, who was also in attendance, is another major donor to the Conservative Party and has funded Boris Johnson. She was a guest at David Cameron’s “Leader’s Group” meetings of key party donors.

Other attendees at Duncan’s birthday dinner included William Hague, Duncan’s close colleague and friend, who was foreign secretary when the UK decided not to recognise the asylum granted to Assange by the Ecuadorian government.

Also present was Salma Shah, an adviser to Sajid Javid when, as home secretary, he controversially certified the initial US extradition request for Assange.

Sir Alan Duncan and Lord Chief Justice Burnett both told Declassified they have never discussed the Julian Assange case with each other.

Georgia's Raffensperger Files Lawsuit Against Justice Department Over Request For Documents

The suspect in the murder of a 21-year-old Temple University student previously had armed carjacking charges dismissed by radically left-wing Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner.

Latif Williams, 17, allegedly shot and killed Temple student Samuel Collington during an attempted robbery. Krasner dropped numerous serious charges against Williams on multiple occasions.

On August 14, Williams was arrested and charged with eight crimes in connection with an armed carjacking, including aggravated assault, robbery, conspiracy and possession of an unlicensed gun. A judge set bail that day at $200,000 monetary, meaning Williams only needed a 10% deposit of $20,000 to get out of jail. Less than a week later, a Municipal Court judge lowered the bail for Williams to $200,000 unsecured, meaning the defendant had to post no money at all to get out of jail.

Krasner’s office filed no appeal and Williams was then placed under house arrest. On Sept. 16th, Judge Charles Hayden granted the D.A.’s request for a continuance after a “victim/witness failed to appear” in court, according to the Municipal Court docket. On September 30th, Judge Martin Coleman granted the D.A.’s motion to withdraw all eight charges against Williams, who was subsequently released.

Less than two months later, Williams attempted to rob Samuel Collington while he was unloading his mother’s SUV in Philadelphia. According to law enforcement officials, Collington was shot twice in the chest and died less than an hour later.

Eighty House Republicans voted with Democrats on Tuesday to pass the Immunization Infrastructure Modernization Act, which if passed by the Senate and signed into law would fund a federal vaccination database.

According to the bill, also called H. R. 550, the government would provide $400 million in taxpayer dollars to fund “immunization system data modernization and expansion,” a system otherwise defined as “a confidential, population-based, computerized database that records immunization doses administered by any health care provider to persons within the geographic area covered by that database.”

The text specifically outlines an expansion of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Public Health Department capabilities and the ability for state and local health departments, as well as public and private health care providers, to share health data with the federal government.

In a statement, the bill’s main sponsor, Democrat Rep. Ann Kuster (NH), said the system would be used to “remind patients when they are due for a recommended vaccine” and identify areas with low vaccination rates to “ensure equitable distribution of vaccines.” Notably, the bill has four Republican co-sponsors: Reps. Larry Bucshon (R-IN), James Baird (R-IN), David McKinley (R-WV), and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). Not one Democrat voted in opposition to the bill.

Rep. Mary Miller (R-IL), who was one of the 130 Republicans to vote “no,” told Breitbart News exclusively on Wednesday that the legislation would enable the federal government to “track” unvaccinated Americans who “will be targeted and forced to comply with Biden’s crazy ‘global vaccination’ vision.”

The risk of an all-out armed conflict in south-eastern Ukraine is extremely high and is becoming a matter of grave concern for Russia, Moscow has cautioned, as international tensions heighten over the war-torn Donbass region.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that “the probability of hostilities in Ukraine is still high” when asked about the likelihood of a war in the country’s east.

“This is a matter of particular concern and worry for us,” he added.

Peskov's remarks come a day after Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman alleged that Kiev was significantly beefing up its military force in the region by “pulling heavy equipment and personnel” into the area.

“According to some reports, the number of troops… in the conflict zone already reaches 125,000 people," Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 breech on the Capitol voted to recommend contempt charges against Jeffery Clark, a Department of Justice attorney under former President Donald Trump.

Clark was fiercely loyal to former President Donald Trump, and was deeply concerned about election fraud. Trump apparently considered installing Clark as acting attorney general.

The committee will hold a second hearing for Clark on Saturday, and the committee's recommendation will be forwarded to the House for a vote.

According to The Hill, when Clark spoke in front of the committee on Nov. 6, he and his attorney “largely refused to answer the committee’s questions.”

Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss) said, “If you want to know what contempt of Congress really looks like, read the transcript of Mr. Clark’s deposition and his attorney’s correspondence with the Select Committee. Because what you find there is contempt for Congress and for the American people.”

Kavanaugh, who told Senate Roe v. Wade was ‘settled as precedent,' signals openness to overturning abortion decision

Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh on Wednesday repeatedly indicated he would be open to overturning “settled law,” including Roe v. Wade, citing a long list of past Supreme Court cases that had been ruled against precedent.

Those cases, Kavanaugh said, included Brown v. Board of Education, which outlawed the “separate but equal” doctrine; Baker v. Carr, which set the stage for one person, one vote; West Coast Hotel v. Parrish, which recognized the state’s authority to regulate business; and Miranda v. Arizona, which required police to give Miranda warnings about the right to remain silent and have an attorney present to suspects in criminal custody.

“If we think that the prior precedents are seriously wrong … why then doesn’t the history of this court’s practice with respect to those cases tell us that the right answer is to return to the position of neutrality?” Kavanaugh at one point asked Center for Reproductive Rights attorney Julie Rikelman, who is representing the abortion provider suing Mississippi’s new law that bans most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

It was one of several times Kavanaugh would return to his argument Wednesday that the Constitution was “silent and therefore neutral” on the issue of abortion as the Supreme Court heard arguments over the Mississippi law and the fate of the 1973 decision. In another line of questioning that was somewhat friendly to Mississippi Solicitor General Scott G. Stewart, Kavanaugh seemed to be looking ahead to hypothetical situations if Roe v. Wade were overturned and if the question of abortion rights were returned to states to decide.

“As I understand it, you’re arguing that … the Constitution is neither pro-life nor pro-choice on the question of abortion, but leaves the issue for the people of the states or perhaps Congress to resolve in the democratic process. Is that accurate?” Kavanaugh asked Stewart.

He also asked Stewart to confirm that, if Mississippi were to prevail, the “majority of states” could, or presumably would, continue to freely allow abortion. Stewart said he agreed.

Kavanaugh’s statements on Wednesday differed — if not in substance than certainly in tone — from the impression he left for some in 2018, during his Senate confirmation process. The question of how he would rule in a challenge to Roe v. Wade came up multiple times during his confirmation hearings, and at the time, Kavanaugh emphasized that Roe v. Wade was “settled as precedent.”

Republicans Are Playing Partisan Politics With America’s Top Anti-Semitism Post

It’s a game that no one is winning, least of all Jews

Here’s something most Republican voters probably don’t know: For the last four months, a handful of GOP senators have been preventing the confirmation of the U.S. special envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitism. This post houses America’s point person for taking on anti-Jewish activities around the globe, but it has been vacant, despite a singularly qualified candidate being nominated for the role. That candidate is Emory professor Deborah Lipstadt. Her résumé speaks for itself. She has authored five books on anti-Semitism, advised the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and been a trenchant public critic of anti-Jewish bigotry from the nationalist right to the socialist left. This past month, she testified as an expert witness at the trial of the alt-right instigators of the racist rally in Charlottesville, where the marchers chanted “Jews will not replace us!” (Last week, a jury fined them over $25 million.) Lipstadt even famously defeated Holocaust denier David Irving in court, in a legal drama that became a Hollywood movie.

With this track record, it’s unsurprising that her appointment has been embraced by Jewish organizations across the ideological and religious spectrum, from the Jewish Federations and the Anti-Defamation League to the Orthodox Union and J Street. These diverse Jewish groups can barely agree on where to set the thermostat, yet they agree on Lipstadt.

But to a small set of Republican senators, Jews are not a reliable authority on anti-Semitism and don’t get to choose who represents them. Despite Lipstadt being nominated in July, Republican members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee have blocked her confirmation hearing. As Jewish Insider reports, though “the Senate committee has scheduled its next hearing for Biden administration nominees for Dec. 1 … Lipstadt is not set to be considered at that convening.” As justification, Senator Jim Risch, the Republican ranking member of the committee, has obliquely cited tweets of Lipstadt’s that were critical of another GOP committee member, Senator Ron Johnson.

It’s a very strange objection, and here’s why: The anti-Semitism envoy is a global ambassadorship, not a domestic post, and has no authority over America. (Don’t take it from me, take it from Trump’s own deputy envoy.) That’s why the position requires confirmation from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in the first place. In other words, even if Lipstadt were a partisan operative using her expertise as cover to take down random Republicans, if she got this job, she would not be permitted to opine on anti-Semitism inside the United States at all—and senators like Risch should know this. Moreover, if the real issue was Lipstadt’s tweets, then Republicans could grill her about them at her confirmation hearing. But they are blocking the hearing entirely. That’s because this is not about her tweets.

In actuality, the real reason behind this obstruction campaign is that Republicans are trying to hamstring the Biden administration by holding up its nominees. As the Associated Press reported last month, thanks to Republican Senate holds on Biden’s picks over countless pretexts, just 36 percent of them had been confirmed—a worse clip than Donald Trump at this stage of his presidency. Jews are merely the collateral damage in this partisan crossfire.

And here’s the thing: Just because certain Republicans won’t confirm America’s chief anti-Semitism firefighter doesn’t mean that the anti-Semitism stops. In recent weeks, the highest administrative court in Greece effectively banned kosher and halal slaughter in the country, which was just the latest volley in an escalating shadow war against European Jewish and Muslim life. Meanwhile, Poland played host to the ugly spectacle of a nationalist rally where attendees chanted “Death to Jews” and burned a book representing a 1264 Polish edict that mandated protections for Jews.

Your Morning Matters: Can you get arrested for reposting something online?

It’s Thursday, Dec. 2, 2021, and today we’re getting into the nuance of a complex lawsuit filed last month alleging civil conspiracy and false arrest against the city of Campbell and various officials, including former Mayor Nick Phillips, Law Director John Zomoida and police Chief Pat Kelly.

What happened? Jorge Rodrigues, a Campbell native now living in Akron, claims he was falsely arrested and briefly jailed in 2019 for posting personnel records online — specifically, records about former city Mayor Nick Phillips that could be considered confidential under state law. Rodrigues’ charges were dropped just this year, according to the suit. But we couldn’t find any records of the case at all.

But there’s much more to it: Phillips at the time was running for re-election, and the lawsuit claims Rodrigues was arrested in retaliation. There’s also questions about how Rodrigues got the records — he claims he reposted them from a former public official — and whether there’s evidence the records were actually stolen. Rodrigues claims a police report was made, but we couldn’t find that either. We also never got any calls back from the city.

What happens now? The case is working its way through federal court. Attorneys have refuted Rodrigues’ claims and are arguing the officials have qualified or prosecutorial immunity.

Exclusive: Trump's social media venture seeks $1 billion raise - sources

"Dec 1 (Reuters) - Former President Donald Trump's new social media venture is seeking to raise up to $1 billion by selling shares to hedge funds and family offices at several times the valuation it commanded in a deal with a blank-check acquisition firm in October, two people familiar with the matter said.

Trump Media & Technology Group, which has yet to roll out the social media app it says it is developing, already stands to receive $293 million if its deal to list in New York through a merger with blank-check firm Digital World Acquisition Corp (DWAC.O) is completed.

The deal valued Trump Media at $875 million, including debt. Trump Media is now seeking to raise up to an additional $1 billion at a valuation of close to $3 billion, to reflect Digital World's share rally after Trump supporters and day traders snapped up the stock, the sources said."

"Trump Media and Digital World have asked investors to finalize commitments to the PIPE by the middle of December, the sources said.

In a PIPE road show attended by one of the sources, investors were asked to commit between $10 million and $20 million. Neither Trump nor Digital World executives made an appearance, and the investor presentation was led by David Boral, the president of EF Hutton, an investment bank that advised Digital World on the deal, the source said. A Trump Media representative was also in attendance, the source added.

But Trump has been personally involved. He has been calling some investors to ask them to make a commitment to the PIPE of more than $100 million, the second of the sources said.

Investors attending the road show were shown a demo from the planned social media app, called TRUTH Social, which looked like a Twitter feed, the sources said."
