Delta Air Lines to Impose Monthly Surcharge on Unvaccinated Employees

Delta Air Lines Inc. will impose a $200 monthly surcharge on employees who aren’t vaccinated against Covid-19, becoming the first major U.S. company to levy a penalty to encourage workers to get protected.

The new policy was outlined in a company memo Wednesday from Chief Executive Officer Ed Bastian, who said 75% of the carrier’s workers already are vaccinated. Increasing cases of coronavirus linked to a “very aggressive” variant are driving the push for all employees to get the shots, he said.

The fee applies to employees in the airline’s health-care plan who haven’t received shots by Nov. 1. The company also will require weekly testing for employees who aren’t vaccinated by mid-September. Delta stopped short of a mandatory vaccine requirement like the one imposed earlier this month by United Airlines Holdings Inc. and a growing number of other companies. Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Facebook Inc. also have announced vaccine requirements.

While mandates have increased since Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE’s vaccine received full Food and Drug Administration approval on Monday, some employers are treading carefully for fear they’ll hurt morale and spur defections in a tight labor market. Some health-care consultants doubt that surcharges will be as persuasive as mandates.

The fee for unvaccinated employees is “to address the financial risk” from their decision, Bastian said. The average hospital stay for Covid-19 patients has cost Delta $40,000 each, he said. “With this week’s announcement that the FDA has granted full approval for the Pfizer vaccine, the time for you to get vaccinated is now,” Bastian said. Under the new policy, any worker not fully vaccinated by Sept. 12 will be required to take a weekly coronavirus test “while community case rates are high,” the note said.

Employees who aren’t vaccinated must wear masks in all indoor settings, effective immediately. Delta also said that starting Sept. 30, Covid pay protection will be provided only to workers who have received both shots but who still get sick.

This is what the title of the following article should have been.

The Science of Masking Kids at School Remains Uncertain is the actual name - but not state what was found.

At the end of May, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a notable, yet mostly ignored, large-scale study of COVID transmission in American schools.

A few major news outlets covered its release by briefly reiterating the study’s summary. That the following measures are associated with a lower incidence of virus in schools:

a. masking then-unvaccinated teachers and

b. improving ventilation with more fresh air

Other findings of equal importance in the study, however, were absent from the summary and not widely reported.

These findings cast doubt on the impact of many of the most common mitigation measures in American schools.

Measures NOT found to be effective:

- Distancing

- hybrid models

- classroom barriers

- HEPA filters

- requiring student masking

Recommending UNIVERSAL mask use conflicts with the study's findings.

FBI Palantir glitch allowed unauthorized access to private data

A computer glitch in a secretive software program used by the FBI allowed some unauthorized employees to access private data for more than a year, prosecutors revealed in a new court filing. The screw-up in the Palantir program — a software created by a sprawling data analytics company co-founded by billionaire Peter Thiel — was detailed in a letter by prosecutors in the Manhattan federal court case against accused hacker Virgil Griffith. Data recovered from Griffith’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, which was obtained through a federal search warrant in March 2020, was accessed on Palantir for more than a year by at least four FBI employees, all of whom work outside of New York and were not investigating the case, prosecutors wrote. The FBI case agent assigned to Griffith’s case was alerted to the unauthorized access earlier this month, when another agent emailed him and said an analyst accessed the search warrant material on Palantir, according to the letter. “An FBI analyst, in the course of conducting a separate investigation, had identified communications between the defendant and the subject of that other investigation by means of searches on the Platform that accessed the Search Warrant Returns,” the feds wrote in the letter filed Tuesday. Federal prosecutors in Manhattan determined the FBI employees — three analysts and an agent — were able to view the material because it was entered in Palantir through the program’s default settings. “When data is loaded onto the Platform, the default setting is to permit access to the data to other FBI personnel otherwise authorized to access the Platform,” prosecutors wrote in the letter. The material was accessed at least four times from May 2020 to August 2021, according to the letter. The employees who accessed the data told prosecutors that they did not recall using the information in their investigations.

Manhattan prosecutors instructed Palantir employees to delete the data on Aug. 17 and said they do not intend on using the information in their case against Griffith, according to the letter. The mishap could suggest a wider issue with the FBI’s use of Palantir, said Albert Fox Cahn, the founder of Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, a privacy and civil rights group. “Since this same issue will happen whenever documents are uploaded with the default settings, and since there doesn’t seem to be any sort of automated notice when they have been improperly accessed, this suggests that it’s happening a lot more than just this one case,” he said. Griffith is accused of violating international sanctions by traveling to North Korea and delivering a speech about cryptocurrency.

He pleaded not guilty after his arrest in 2019 and was subsequently ordered held in jail pending his trial this year, according to court filings.

The second-largest mortgage lender in the country first announced its plans to accept cryptocurrency for mortgage loans last week during the company’s earnings call, Bitcoin.com reported. "We’ve evaluated the feasibility, and we’re looking forward to being the first mortgage company in America to accept cryptocurrency to satisfy mortgage payments," Ishbia reportedly said during the call. Speaking with Varney on Wednesday, Ishbia said United Wholesale Mortgage is not only going to accept Bitcoin, but is also looking into possibly accepting Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies as well. He stressed, however, that "we’re not going to do every single coin." "We’re going to do it the right way for consumers and for our business, and we think it’s a positive move in the right direction," Ishbia said. shbia noted his company is not directly connected to customers but instead works with mortgage brokers to connect customers and loans. "People do want this," he told Varney, adding that his company has been getting "a lot of requests" and even more since he made the announcement last week.
