Tesla Loses Top Spot In Cathie Wood's ARKK ETF To Roku

The Tesla fairy tale looks like it could be coming to an end for some that rode it up over the last several years.

No sooner have both Wedbush and Morgan Stanley soured on Tesla than Cathie Wood's ARKK ETF has dropped the electric vehicle company led by Elon Musk as the fund's top holding. For the first time in roughly four and a half years, Tesla is no longer the largest holding in Wood's flagship "Innovation" fund. Tesla had been the largest holding in the fund by value since 2017, Bloomberg noted this week. On Thursday, the top spot was captured by Roku. ARKK held $717 million worth of Roku versus $703 million in Tesla. ARKK has been selling Tesla for "at least" four quarters in a row, Bloomberg noted. It owns 1.59 million shares, down from 5.79 million a year prior.

Recall, ARKK had its worst ever month in April, we noted last month. ARKK had fallen almost 70% from its all time highs at the time in a plunge that Bloomberg called a "dramatic change in fortunes for Wood" last month. At the end of April, only one of the fund's 37 holdings - Signify Health - was green for the year.

Ruble Hits 7-Year High As Gas Buyers Bow To Putin's Payment Mandate

On Friday the ruble surged to the highest level in seven years against the euro, thanks in large part to the Putin-ordered mandatory conversion of foreign currency by export-focused companies, also as China and India (and much of Europe) are still buying Russia's energy and agricultural products... despite the loud the threats coming from Washington, which have lately included a potential move to block Russian sovereign debt payments.

At this point the Russian currency is about 20% stronger than pre-invasion, as the war grinds on into its fourth month. Jumping as much as 9% against the Euro, the ruble last hit this level in June 2015. And the Ruble is at its strongest against the dollar since 2018. Aiding the surge, there's further been weak demand for dollars and euros given restrictions on cross-border transactions, and as an increasingly isolated Russia sees slowed imports. Finland has become the latest alongside Poland and Bulgaria last month being cut off from Russian gas supplies (Finland confirmed its taps will be cut Saturday, though much less reliant on gas among its diverse resources).

Novak further confirmed that a number of "major clients" have either already paid using the mechanism are are willing to pay on time to avoid cutoff.

Donald Trump knew the election was going to be stolen. He told us they were using Covid to implement mass mail-in voting. Russia Halts Natural Gas Shipments to Finland

Finland’s state-owned energy company Gasum said Friday that Russia would soon cut off the country’s main source of natural gas supplies, forcing it to find alternatives. Russia’s Gazprom PJSC informed the company that it would stop delivering natural gas supplies to Finland beginning Saturday (May 21). Gazprom said it was halting exports to the country for its failure to comply with a process to pay for natural gas deliveries in rubles. Gazprom said Friday that it had not received payment for April deliveries and would not export any gas to the country until it complies with the Kremlin’s decree for ruble payments. Gasum said it would not cooperate with the requirement because it violates its long-term supply contract with Russia and announced earlier in the week it was taking Gazprom to arbitration over the matter.

CEOs Are Quitting Their Jobs At The Fastest Pace On Record

It's not just ordinary employees who are quitting their jobs at the fastest pace on record, as the latest JOLTs report showed when it revealed that in March the number of quits rose by another 152,000 to a record high of 4.5 million.According to Challenger, CEOs are bailing at a record pace as well: in a report published on May 18, business and executive coaching firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, found that the number of CEO changes at U.S. companies rose 3% to 123 in April from 119 in March.

While that number is 8% lower than the 133 CEO changes announced in the same month in 2021, so far this year, 518 CEOs have left their posts, the highest January-April total since the firm began tracking monthly CEO changes in 2002. The number is up 18% from the 440 CEO exits announced through April last year, and up slightly from the previous high of 513 exits announced in January through April of 2019.

Thirty CEOs retired last month for a total of 122 so far this year, while 150 CEOs stepped into other high-level roles within the company, usually as a Chair or advisor to the CEO, this year. Another 9 CEOs left for new opportunities, for a total of 36 in 2022.The rate of women taking over the incoming CEO role ticked up to 26% so far in 2022, holding steady from the rate of incoming women CEOs in all of 2021. Of outgoing CEOs, through April, 20% of the 518 CEOs who left their posts were women, compared to 16% of the 440 CEOs who left their posts in the first quarter of 2021. In all of 2021, 19.6% of CEOs who left their posts were women.

Looking at the industries with the highest change in leadership, Government/Non-Profit entities led CEO turnover in March with 27, for a total of 118 so far this year. That is a 53% increase over the same period in 2021, when 77 CEOs left their posts in this sector.

Meanwhile, Technology companies (which for the most part are also non-profit) saw 47 CEO changes so far this year, followed by Health Care firms with 46. The Services sector had 42 CEOs leave their posts, while Entertainment/Leisure companies saw 37. Financial sector firms saw 31 CEO exits through April.

More Subprime Borrowers Are Missing Loan Payments

The share of subprime credit cards and personal loans that are at least 60 days late is rising faster than normal, according to credit-reporting firm Equifax. In March, those delinquencies rose month over month for the eighth time in a row, nearing their prepandemic levels. Rising delinquencies were inevitable following their decline during the pandemic, many lenders and analysts said. Even so, the increase is getting attention from investors partly because the Federal Reserve, facing the highest inflation since the early 1980s, is embarking on what is expected to be the sharpest series of interest-rate rises in years. Higher loan delinquency figures can indicate stress on the part of consumers whose spending is a significant driver of economic activity.

Fears that rising rates will throw the economy into recession have fueled the worst start of the year for stocks in decades. A poor earnings season for major U.S. retail chains has intensified those concerns this week, prompting large declines in major retail shares and sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average to its steepest drop of the year Wednesday. Delinquencies on subprime car loans and leases hit an all-time high in February, based on Equifax's tracking that goes back to 2007. Many people, including those with less-than-perfect credit, paid off debts and built up savings during the pandemic, a surprising outcome considering that lenders at first thought borrowers would default en masse when Covid-19 hit.
