Sen. Rand Paul blocked an attempt by fellow Republican Sen. John Kennedy to quickly pass legislation that would require companies to build a “kill switch” into their artificial intelligence model.

Kennedy, of Louisiana, went to the Senate floor Wednesday to try to pass his bill without holding a formal vote — a step that can be prevented by any one of his 99 colleagues. He argued that the measure was effectively a short-term step, with Congress unlikely to pass more sweeping AI legislation in the immediate future even amid fears that technological advancements could spiral out of human control.

“We are not going to get up off our ice-cold lazy butts and address this anytime soon,” Kennedy said about Congress’ inability to pass a more comprehensive bill. “But still we’ve got this risk out there that we know is real of one of these models becoming the Terminator.”

Paul, however, blocked Kennedy’s request to pass the bill through a unanimous consent agreement, saying from the Senate floor, “I think we should have as many facts as possible before we dictate rules for the whole economy.

“I don’t oppose the spirit of this bill, but I do ask that we make sure that we have all the information,” the Kentucky lawmaker added.

Paul tried to amend Kennedy’s bill to establish a group that could make recommendations on AI guardrail policies to the Senate Commerce Committee. Kennedy rejected that suggestion.

“My mama didn’t raise a fool,” he said, adding that “a committee is a way to kill this.”

Kennedy’s push for a vote comes after he told reporters Monday that he intended to roll out legislation and attempt to pass it this week, even while he acknowledged that he didn’t yet have any formal buy-in from his colleagues. He also appeared to know by earlier in the day Wednesday that he was running into a roadblock, saying in an interview that he expected Paul to offer a counterproposal.

The person killed on the ground during the NBC Los Angeles News Helicopter Crash in Chatsworth was 29-year-old Edy Gutierrez Mejia.

Mejia was a 29-year-old visitor from Guatemala who had just arrived in Los Angeles to meet a cousin for work related to transporting cars back to Guatemala.

He was struck on the ground when the NewsChopper4 helicopter went down between two commercial buildings on Mason Avenue while reporting on a prior fatal traffic accident (a car smashing into the middle of a bus).

Zareh Sevanesian, who witnessed the crash, said the helicopter was swaying before it started losing altitude.

“It was just getting lower and lower and lower and lower,” he said on the “TODAY” show.

NBC Los Angeles and Telemundo 52 issued a joint statement expressing condolences.

“We are deeply saddened to share that a helicopter providing aerial news coverage for NBC4 and Telemundo 52 was involved in a fatal accident in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening,” the stations said. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of those who lost their lives.”

The helicopter crash occurred after two people were killed and others were injured in a crash at around 5 p.m. between a Los Angeles Metro bus and a passenger vehicle on Nordhoff Street at De Soto Avenue, officials said.

Bailee Lynn Rios, 36, of Simi Valley, was arrested on suspicion of murder in the crash involving the bus, the Los Angeles Police Department said Wednesday.

Rios was driving her SUV southbound in the northbound lanes of De Soto Avenue when she ran a red light, almost struck a crossing car and then hit the bus, according to the LAPD.

The two dead were adult passengers on the bus, police said. Their names have not been publicly released. One of people hurt had severe injuries, police said.

Video from inside the chopper moments before the crash will be key in the investigation, he said, and it will be sent off for a sound spectrum analysis.

“In that recording we are clearly hearing sounds that are consistent with the engine changing its speed, and we’re also hearing tones that are being generated that are likely advisories to the pilot,” Salazar said.

"What's clear from the video and from the audio is that we know the engine failed. Why it failed and why the pilot wasn't able to successfully land is the open question for the NTSB," aviation expert Steve Gaynard said.

Gaynard said that because the chopper had been hovering before the crash and not moving forward, its options for recovery after engine problems were reduced. The close surroundings and low altitude likely also left little room for the pilot to correct or troubleshoot.

"When the engine failed, it was a particularly challenging time because the helicopter was at low altitude and it was hovering. It didn't have any forward air speed," Gaynard said. "Particularly difficult to do an autorotation in an urban area. He had only that narrow alleyway, and part of that alleyway was blocked by those two large containers. No place to turn."

Officials in Kiev embezzled more than $3 million by exploiting the delivery of old Soviet Russian-made metro cars donated by Poland, according to Western-backed anti-corruption investigators.

The 60 cars were donated by Warsaw in late 2022, allowing the Polish capital’s Metro to dispose of older railstock while demonstrating solidarity with Ukraine following the escalation of the conflict with Russia. Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko described the donation slated to be cannibalized for spare parts as “meaningful help” for the city when the first batch of six cars arrived in May 2023.

However, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) alleged on Wednesday that a group of officials in Kiev skimmed funds allocated for transporting the cars from Poland by manipulating a tender through which the cost was dramatically inflated.

NABU surveillance records show that a preliminary quote provided by a Ukrainian company toone of the suspects was ten times lower than the final contract price. The actual transportation services cost around a quarter of the sum, andthe remaining $3 million was stolen and laundered in the EU,the agency said.

Investigators have issued formal suspicion notices to a former Kiev Metro official, three serving officials in the city’s municipal utilities, two alleged accomplices, and the owner of the company that won the tender.

The businessman apparently clashed with the alleged masterminds of the scheme after the unrealistic terms of the contract attracted scrutiny from financial monitors. In one surveillance recording, he told an associate who knew about his dealings that he threatened to testify against the officials because he did not want to be left taking the blame.

“I am the worst criminal here, I am Mindich,”he said, referring to fugitive businessman Timur Mindich, a longtime associate of Vladimir Zelensky who NABU accused of running a $100 million kickback scheme in the energy sector.

“Nah, you are higher,” the other man replied. “You are f**king Yermak.”

Andrey Yermak served as Zelensky’s chief of staff until he was forced to resign last year after becoming embroiled in the Mindich scandal. NABU has since accused him of money laundering in a parallelinvestigation into Mindich’s alleged criminal activities.

Ukraine’s High Anti-Corruption Court ordered the removal of an electronic tracking anklet from Yermak this week after his defense argued that the device posed a health risk.

A €1.5 million luxury property in Dresden has beentraced to the family of Vladimir Zelensky’s longtime business associates and may have been intended for use by the Ukrainian leader or his relatives, an RT investigation has found.

RT reviewed German and Cypriot corporate records, financial statements, and property information, and consulted a lawyer experienced in structuring high-value European real-estate deals to reconstruct the purchase and its financing.

The trail leads to a newly built 22-apartment luxury development in central Dresden and a German companycontrolled by Boris Shefir and his wife. Shefir co-founded the Kvartal 95 entertainment company with Zelensky, while his brother Sergey was a longtime business partner of the Ukrainian leader and became his first presidential aide after Zelensky entered politics.

Records show the company spent €1.5 million ($1.73 million) on real estate in the development,with the money passing through a complex network of businesses involving Cyprus and an offshore structure in Belize.

A lawyer who reviewed the arrangement for RT questioned why such a structure would be needed for a conventional family property purchase,suggesting it could obscure the identity of the ultimate beneficiary.

“Given the long-standing friendly relationship between the Shefirs and Zelensky,the real user could be the Ukrainian leader and his family,” he told RT.

The lawyer also highlighted an unusual feature of the development:the building has been blurred on Google Street View since its completion.

“I can’t imagine why they would do this if ordinary people live in this building, even the very wealthy businessman Shefir,” he said. “But if a distinguished family lived there, for example, the family of the Ukrainian president, especially during the ongoing military conflict, hiding this apartment from the maps would be a very logical step.”

The Dresden purchase is not the first costly foreign property associated with the Shefir family. RT previously reported that Sergey Shefir’s son acquired two Prague apartments worth around €2 million shortly before the escalation of the Ukraine conflict.

Zelensky and the Shefirs have previously faced scrutiny over offshore structures connected to their former entertainment business, including companies in Belize and Cyprus.

The findings come as Western-backed anti-corruption investigators pursue several figures from Zelensky’s circle. They include his former business associate Timur Mindich, who is accused of orchestrating a $100 million kickback scheme involving Ukraine’s state nuclear energy company.

The same investigators recently uncovered an alleged protection racket involving scam call centers and senior prosecutors, prompting Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko to resign andadding to tensions between Zelensky’s government and Ukraine’s Western-backed anti-corruption agencies.

A UN fact-finding mission has found reasonable grounds to believe the US committed war crimes by carrying out indiscriminate strikes on civilian targets in Iran, according to a new report.

The Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran released its findings to the UN Human Rights Council on Thursday, focusing in part on two strikes it described as “emblematic” of the conflict and involving “significant violations” of international law.

The first was the February 28 double strike on an elementary school in Minab. The mission said credible information confirmed 157 deaths, including 123 children aged 13 and younger.

Investigators identified the weapon as a Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM), used only by the US during the conflict. Citing evidence including internal Pentagon investigations and Washington’s failure to explain the incident, the mission concluded that the school had been deliberately targeted, apparently on the basis of outdated intelligence.

The site had been part of an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) compound before 2016, but the school had been separated from the military facility by a wall for more than a decade. Investigators said it was clearly identifiable as a civilian site and found no evidence it was being used for military purposes.

The second incident involved a strike on a sports complex and surrounding residential area in Lamerd, Fars Province. The mission said the attack killed and injured 22 civilians and damaged nearby homes and a school.

Investigators said a US-made Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) detonated in the air, dispersing around 180,000 tungsten pellets over a wide area.

In both cases, the mission concluded that US conduct went beyond negligence and amounted to the war crime of launching an indiscriminate attack resulting in civilian deaths, injuries or damage to civilian property. It said the US had failed to adequately verify targeting information despite the risk to civilians.

The report also cited rhetoric from senior US officials, including President Donald Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, which investigators said indicated a “deprioritization of civilian harm mitigation”and compliance with international humanitarian law.

Hegseth had called for the US military to be “more lethal” and said American forces would give “no quarter” to their enemies, drawing criticism from lawmakers and legal experts over the implications for prisoners of war.

Trump has repeatedly criticized the UN, accusing it of failing to resolve international conflicts and of bias against Israel, which joined the US in launching the war against Iran. His administration has also withdrawn Washington from several UN bodies and agencies.

The fact-finding mission separately accused Iranian authorities of serious violations during their 2025-2026 crackdown on mass protests, concluding that some abuses amounted to crimes against humanity.

Trump publicly backed the protesters and offered them US protection, while Tehran accused Washington of supporting unrest as part of a failed regime-change effort.

Nearly 92% of Piddington voters backed a symbolic secession after the governmentproposed housing 1,256 male asylum seekers nearby

An English village has overwhelmingly voted to “secede” from the UK in protest over government plans to house more than 1,200 male migrants at a nearby former military base. The referendum in Piddington, Oxfordshire has no legal force but drew nearly 92% turnout.

The result announced on Wednesday showed that 285 residents backed leaving the UK, 26 voted against, and one ballot was spoiled. Organizers staged the symbolic referendum in protest against plans to house up to 1,256 male asylum seekers at the nearby MOD Bicester site.

“We are Piddington, the village that roars,”parish council vice chair Susannah Parden declared as she announced the result. Council chair Tim McNally called the vote “an example of democracy in operation,”adding: “We went into this village hall as the underdogs – we had a plucky idea. We have given a message to the world.”

The ballot asked residents whether Piddington should “secede from the United Kingdom and pursue self-determination,”while signs proclaiming the “Principality of Piddington” appeared around the village. More than 130 local women have also written to female MPs warning that their “safety, security, and freedoms” would be threatened if the asylum center opens.

Despite the overwhelming vote, the government said it will not reconsider the plan. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy told the BBC that abandoning the proposed center would be unfair to other communities already housing large numbers of migrants.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham likewise said he understood the village’s “strength of feeling,” but insisted that asylum accommodation had to be shared fairly across the country. Using the former military site is part of the Home Office’s push to move migrants out of hotels.

The Piddington referendum comes as the UK grapples with continued illegal crossings of the English Channel and mounting pressure over asylum accommodation.

Hundreds of anti-immigration protesters clashed with police in Portsmouth earlier this month after a boat carrying around 140 asylum seekers was brought ashore. Demonstrators blocked roads in an attempt to stop buses transporting the arrivals to a Home Office processing center, chanting “stop the boats” and “send them back.”

Some 33,000 people, mostly adult men, arrived in the UK by small boat in the year to July, accounting for around 88% of illegal arrivals, according to government data. A YouGov poll in August found 69% of Britons believe immigration over the past decade has been too high, while 43% said it had been mostly bad for the country, up from 33% in 2016.

Oil prices are falling on Thursday on some headlines signaling potential de-escalation moves out of the Saudi-Yemen conflict, both via Reuters:

China reportedly presses Iran to help rein in the Houthis after Saudi appeal, according to Retuers citing sources

Oil prices fell on Wednesday after reports that Saudi Arabia was offering additional crude cargoes through Oman eased some concerns about Middle East supply disruptions, while a smaller-than-expected draw in U.S. crude inventories added further downward pressure.

US crude futures have extended their drop to fall back below $100/bbl. This also comes amid continued reports of better-than-expected recovery in Gulf infrastructure, as Saudi Arabia is claiming it is able to restore half the capacity of its East-West pipeline within merely days. The optimism could prove just wishful thinking, however - and the coming week will tell.

Starting last week, when the Houthis made their lightning-fast advance along the Red Sea coast, fragmenting the positions of the Saudi-backed coalition government, Riyadh turned to Beijing for help, the Thursday Reuters report indicates.

"Chinese officials did not issue any explicit threats ​or indicate that Beijing would seek to pressure Tehran economically if it failed to use its influence over the Houthis, the three Iranian sources said," the report adds.

The Chinese foreign ministry has responded to knowledge of the diplomatic maneuvering getting out that "China does not wish to see regional tensions further spill over into Yemen and the Red Sea. Escalating regional instability is not in the interests of ​any party".

"The sovereignty and security of all countries should be respected, and facilities vital to people's livelihoods must not be targeted. China calls for an end to actions that further complicate the situation and urges resolving issues through dialogue ​and negotiation," it said.

A senior Western diplomat in the region was separately quoted as saying "Beijing is one of the few capitals that can still ​press Iran to rein in the Houthis."

Twin brothers Michael John Null and William “Bill” Null, two of the Michigan men a jury cleared in 2023 after the FBI and Democrat Attorney General Dana Nessel spent years painting them as terrorists, have now taken the fight to federal court.

They filed a civil complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan on September 15, 2026, Null v. Nessel, naming leftist Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, disgrace-ridden former FBI Special Agent Richard Trask II (who was fired after domestic assault charges), agent Henrik Impola, former Detroit FBI chief Steven D’Antuono, along with the Michigan State Police and a parade of Deep State actors.

In October 2020, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel charged the Null brothers (along with Eric Molitor and several others) in state court with:

Providing material support for terrorist acts (related to an alleged plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and attack the state Capitol).

Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Prosecutors alleged they acted as lookouts during nighttime surveillance of Whitmer’s vacation home in Elk Rapids and participated in militia training and planning meetings tied to the Wolverine Watchmen and other groups. The kidnapping plot was manufactured by the FBI.

The case against the Michigan militia members plotting to ‘kidnap’ Governer Whitmer fell apart when it was revealed that Chris Wray’s FBI was behind the scheme, the FBI paid for training, Governor Whitmer was in on the planning, and the FBI even had an agent sleeping with the militia leader during the planning and training.

Did you catch that… Governor Whitmer was also involved in planning the plot to kidnap herself!

A new independent investigation found that Kiev presented Ukrainian troops as civilian victims of the staged incident

Britain orchestrated the ‘Bucha massacre’ narrative to prolong the Ukraine conflict in 2022, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said, citing a new investigation into the alleged victims.

Zakharova said new evidence proves that Bucha was a “brazen falsification”commissioned by Kiev’s foreign sponsors and amplified by the Western media to eliminate any chance of a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.

She singled out the UK government as the primary organizer of the false flag operation, adding that the “key role” of spreading the story was assigned to the BBC.

In March 2022, Russian forces withdrew from Kiev Region, including Bucha, as a good-will gesturein support of a potential settlement at the Istanbul peace talks. Bucha Mayor Anatoly Fedoruk and residents initially said everything was calm and peaceful in the town, which is around 20 km from central Kiev.

Days later, images of bodies strewn across the streets of Bucha were broadcast by the Western media, supported by NATO-aligned OSINT fact checkers,triggering a storm of international accusations against Moscow that contributed to the collapse of peace talks.

Zakharova noted that there is still “no single website, no single figure, no lists – neither consolidated nor fragmented,” that would provide any verifiable information about the alleged victims of the Bucha ‘massacre’.The UN, Kiev, international organizations, and Western media have never provided a list despite repeated Russian requests.

The unverifiable nature of the incident strongly implies that it was falsified, and suggests that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres knowingly made himself “part of this provocation,” Zakharova said.

Given that no public list of victims exists, Thursday’s report – which was presented by Maksim Grigoriev, the head of the International Public Tribunal on Crimes of Ukrainian Neo-Nazis – examined the names on the Bucha memorial instead – the closest thing to an official list, its authors say.

The memorial contains over 500 names and has repeatedly served as a backdrop for visits by Western leaders.

Grigoriev said researchers cross-checked the names against Ukrainian media, military records, and social-media accounts, and found that those they traced were Ukrainian servicemen, including Azov and territorial-defense fighters, rather than civilians allegedly murdered by Russian troops.

The soldiers were also found to have had little or no connection to Bucha, and were killed and buried nowhere near the town.

Among the examples cited were Evgeny Petrash and Vladimir Bisaga, who the investigation identified as Azov fighters buried in Kiev and Uzhgorod, respectively. Two other names, Ruslan Belousov and Roman Dovgalyuk, were identified as Ukrainian military pilots killed when their aircraft was shot down near Berezovka – far from Bucha.

The report also features a number of eyewitness accounts from several conflict-zone towns, pointing to a wider pattern of Ukrainian forces killing civilians and then blaming Russia once Western reporters arrive.

One witness said Ukrainian troops opened fire on civilians collecting water, with journalists arriving to film the aftermath within minutes.

Grigoriev said these testimonies show that Kiev repeatedly used civilian deaths to manufacture material for the Western media and claimed that the same method was used in Bucha.

Zakharova stated that the new findings will be submitted to Russian law enforcement, international organizations, and international courts. The investigators behind the report also urged foreign journalists to conduct their own examination.

It’s from that moment, when the cries for regulation, safety and security will begin.

NASA’s Moon Orbiter Spots New, ‘Once-in-Century’ Moon Crater

It started as a routine data-quality check.

But as Robert Wagner, a scientist with NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), scanned a giant Moon map on his computer screen, an unusually large bright spot circled by a dark halo caught his eye, as it implied that surface material in that area had been shaken up.

“I just stopped, dropped everything, and started looking into what that spot was,” said Wagner, an image-processing specialist from Intuitive Machines who works with data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) system.

By comparing before and after images of the Moon, Wagner realized he had discovered the largest, newly formed crater ever found in the solar system, as scientists reported Wednesday in Science Advances.

This discovery highlights the value of NASA’s Moon orbiter data in studying a dynamic landscape as the agency advances a sustained human presence and expanded scientific and commercial activity on the Moon.

Officially named McGetchin after pioneering lunar scientist Tom McGetchin, the crater formed on the Moon’s eastern edge sometime between April 11 and May 22, 2024, after a comet or asteroid the size of a three- to six-story building hit the surface.

The crash left a crater, 728 feet wide, that spans the length of two football fields. And at 141 feet deep, the crater could fit three vertically stacked yellow school buses.

Scientists estimate that an impact of this magnitude happens on the Moon about once in a century or even longer.

Moon takes some hits

For more than 17 years, LRO has been circling the Moon and using its seven instruments to map the topography, surface composition, temperature, and radiation environment there.

The spacecraft’s team has identified at least 1,000 new impact craters throughout the mission and flagged 100,000 more surface changes from an object smashing into the Moon or from the debris that flung out after.

With no atmosphere to slow them or burn them up, space rocks and other objects easily reach the lunar surface. Most are much smaller compared to the object that carved out McGetchin crater.

The smallest craters scientists can distinguish from LRO images are about 30 feet wide, the length of a three-story building laid on its side, made by rocks about 43 inches wide, the size of a monster-truck tire.

Scientists estimate that impacts of this scale produce about 140 new craters across the Moon each year. But most new ones are made by microscopic projectiles that leave holes too small to identify in orbital images.

His family on Thursday announced the senator's death, Fox News reported.

Kyl was first sworn into the Senate in 1995 and retired in 2013. He returned to the Senate in 2018 after former Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., died.

After receiving a diagnosis of a neurological disease that would produce dementia, Kyl announced in December 2025 he was stepping away from public life.

UNEXPECTED SATELLITE EXPLOSION: A Cold War spy satellite just broke apart in Earth orbit, and no one knows why

The US Space Force detected the breakup on Sept. 13th when USA 32 unexpectedly shed a cloud of debris 775 km above Earth. The number of fragments is still unknown; Space-Track, the Space Force's public catalog, has not yet released a count.

USA 32 was launched in 1988 on a top-secret mission to monitor Soviet radars from orbit. It was part of a series of satellites named after the actress Farrah Fawcett. This one was Farrah III, shaped, ironically, like a squat cylinder. The "tuna can" form allowed it to rapidly spin and sweep its antennas across the ground below. The NRO fully declassified the program only this year.

There may be nothing sinister about this event. Old spacecraft carry batteries and leftover propellant. After 38 years of heating and cooling, a pressurized tank or a battery cell on USA 32 may have simply ruptured. This is a leading suspicion, although it is too soon to rule out a meteor strike or ASAT.

Other satellites may be in danger. USA 32 broke up in a crowded shell of low Earth orbit. Within 50 km of its altitude are more than 200 active satellites, including the entire Iridium NEXT constellation. Even before USA 32 broke up, this region was extremely cluttered. NASA identifies a major debris-density peak already there from the Iridium 33/Cosmos 2251 collision in 2009. The collision threat is real.

Analysts are carefully tracking the fragments and measuring their individual trajectories. Soon, they may be able to "run the clock backward" to see how the explosion began.

NASA Unveils Enterprise, the First Space Shuttle

Fifty years ago, on Sept. 17, 1976—Constitution Day of America’s bicentennial year—NASA unveiled its first space shuttle orbiter, OV-101, to the public.

NASA had originally planned to name the vehicle Constitution, but a letter-writing campaign changed the agency’s plans.

Nearly 100,000 fans of the Star Trek television series wrote the White House urging that the shuttle be named after the USS Enterprise, the fictional starship featured in the series.

In a memo, President Gerald Ford directed NASA to christen the shuttle Enterprise saying he was “partial to the name”.

The name Enterprise, long celebrated in U.S. naval history, had earlier been bestowed on the first nuclear-powered carrier, a World War II carrier, and an American vessel of the Revolutionary War.

Hundreds of invited guests attended the rollout ceremony at Rockwell’s Palmdale facility in southern California, including Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and several cast members.

The orbiter is now on display at the Intrepid Museum in New York City.

Great news on NIL, in other words, straightening out the horrible situation taking place with respect to College Sports. It is out of control, and will lead to bankruptcies and disaster for many Colleges. If nothing is done, it is also very bad for Women’s Sports, all Olympic Sports, and everything else other than Football — But even Football is bad because, without “caps,” all Colleges will be financially consumed and, in many cases, it will ruin them. We can’t have Professional Athletes going back to College for Big Dollars, and playing against much younger competitors. It’s both dangerous and unfair! The original Space Race was a contest over industrial and technological capacity. The Soviet Union took the early lead, but the United States ultimately landed Apollo 11 on the Moon in 1969.

More than half a century later, Washington is in another strategic race, this time to rebuild the supply chain for materials used in fighter aircraft, missiles, drones, satellites, electric motors and advanced electronics.

One U.S.-listed company to watch in that effort is Evolution Metals & Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:EMAT), which already produces rare earth permanent magnets commercially and has binding equipment orders expected to expand annual capacity roughly tenfold ahead of a major U.S. defense sourcing deadline.

China accounted for 91% of global refined magnet rare earth output and 94% of sintered permanent magnet production in 2024, according to the International Energy Agency.

Washington has committed billions of dollars to rebuilding the rare earth supply chain, from mining and refining through finished magnets, using grants, loans, equity investments and other support.

The goal is to rebuild a supply chain that took China decades to consolidate.

The Race Is About More Than Mining

Rare earth ore is only the starting line. After mining, material has to be separated, refined into individual oxides, converted into metals and alloys, and then manufactured into finished magnets with the right performance characteristics.

Each stage needs different equipment, technical know-how, qualified feedstock and customer certification.

Washington is funding companies at different points in that chain. MP Materials (NYSE:MP) has received federal backing for mining, separation and magnet production.

The Department of War also announced a $700 million conditional loan commitment for Vulcan Elements and ReElement Technologies to expand U.S. separation, metallization and NdFeB magnet capacity.

The Department of Energy separately announced nearly $1 billion in planned funding opportunities across critical-mineral mining, processing and manufacturing technologies.

The problem is that a mine does not solve a magnet shortage by itself. Neither does a refinery.

The United States and its allies need enough qualified capacity across the chain to turn non-China feedstock into finished magnets at commercial scale.

The Court left the Postal Service’s new barcode, envelope-design, and voter-data rules blocked as mail voting continues under existing state systems.

The Supreme Court blocked President Trump’s mail-ballot crackdown days after states began sending absentee ballots to voters ahead of the 2026 midterms.

In a Sept. 14 order, the Court denied the Trump administration’s emergency request to revive a USPS rule targeting federal ballot mail. The 7-2 ruling leaves a nationwide injunction in place as the case continues.

The rule would have required ballot envelopes to carry an election-mail logo, high-speed scanning capability, and a unique voter barcode. States also would have needed to submit envelope designs for USPS approval and upload voter data to a Postal Service portal. USPS planned to reject and return mailings that did not comply.

Mail-voting states get their existing systems for the midterms. NPR reported that voting had already started in Alabama, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, with Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington preparing their own mail-ballot operations.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote that the rule may fall within USPS authority. But he joined the majority because forcing states to rebuild their ballot-mail systems this close to Election Day would be “arbitrary and capricious.”

Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas dissented. Alito argued the Postal Service possessed broad power to regulate the mail and that the rule would help detect election fraud.

The Court did not permanently void the rule. It stopped the federal government from imposing it before the midterms, leaving states to keep mailing ballots under the procedures already on their books.

ESA starts next phase of IRIS² evolution through Low-LEO activities

The European Space Agency (ESA) has signed 18 consolidation contracts bringing together nearly 80 companies to study new secure and resilient connectivity services.

The contracts also cover associated mission concepts and aim to shape the future of the EU's secure connectivity constellation – IRIS² – which will provide Europeans with resilient communications, when and where it matters most.

The companies will develop relevant use cases and services, and trade-off different mission concepts as part of ESA’s Low-LEO (low Earth orbit) activities, helping to explore how IRIS² capabilities could evolve as new European needs emerge.

Signed on 17 September at the ESA European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Madrid, Spain, the agreements mark the start of a new phase of studies under the ESA Programme Related to EU Secure Connectivity.

The services being explored are aimed at governmental users and range from secure governmental broadband, maritime operations and aviation to data relay and tasking, among others.

These contracts will strengthen Europe’s industrial base while giving smaller and mid-sized companies opportunities to contribute to the development and validation of new secure connectivity services through the Low-LEO layer.

The resulting capabilities could, subject to their successful maturation and future programme decisions, support a potential evolution of the main EU IRIS² system as user needs evolve.

Amounting to a total of €20 million, the contracts were signed by Laurent Jaffart, ESA’s Director of Resilience, Navigation and Connectivity, together with representatives from the participating industry teams, at an event attended by representatives of the European Commission.

“Space is evolving rapidly, and Europe needs to evolve with it. Low-LEO provides the opportunity to explore new ideas and capabilities, test them in practice and learn from the results.

This ability to innovate, adapt and build on experience will be essential as we develop the next generation of secure and resilient connectivity for Europe.

We look forward to continuing to work hand-in-hand with the European Commission and industry on the future of IRIS²,” said Laurent Jaffart, Director of ESA’s Resilience, Navigation and Connectivity.

What is IRIS²?

Under the overall responsibility of the European Commission, IRIS² is Europe’s initiative to build a secure and resilient space-based connectivity network.

In these challenging times, its aim is to strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy by providing reliable connectivity and reducing dependence on external systems.

ESA acts on behalf of the European Commission as the qualification and validation authority for the governmental infrastructure of the EU's Secure Connectivity Programme.

It manages development and validation contracts supporting the initial space and ground segments, verifies end-to-end system, service, and security performance against EC requirements, and coordinates these activities with ESA’s own programme.

China conducted two successful space launches Thursday, sending a new batch of low-orbit internet satellites and two commercial interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) remote-sensing satellites into orbit, state media reported.

The first launch took place at 8.32 a.m. (0032 GMT) from the Hainan commercial spacecraft launch site. A Long March-12 rocket successfully placed the 25th group of low-orbit internet satellites into orbit, according to the Global Times.

It was the 667th launch of the Long March rocket family.

At 10.40 a.m. (0240 GMT), a Kuaizhou-11 Y3 solid-fuel rocket launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China, carrying two satellites into preset orbit.

It was the seventh mission of the Kuaizhou-11 rocket and the 40th launch of the Kuaizhou rocket series.

In his question for written answer (E-002983/2026) with reference to Article 144 of the Rules of Procedure, German FDP Member of the European Parliament and Secretary-General of the FDP North Rhine-Westphalia, Moritz Körner, submitted the inquiry on 15 July 2026.

Under the title “UAP allegations” Körner writes:

“In a June 2023 NewsNation interview, then US Senator Marco Rubio said that several current or former government personnel had approached the US Senate Intelligence Committee with what he called ‘firsthand knowledge or firsthand claims’ concerning matters related to unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP). He added that many had held high-level security clearances and senior government positions. The current US Government has been regularly releasing tranches of documents on this issue.

1.Has the Commission verified the documents and the statements of its US counterparts on this issue?

2.Does the Commission consider the publications of the US administration to be at all serious?

3.Does the Commission rule out the existence of UAP/UFOs?”

Moritz Körner’s questions were then answered on 25 August 2026 by the EU Commissioner for Defence and Space, the Lithuanian politician Andrius Kubilius, “on behalf of the European Commission” as follows:

The area of unidentified anomalous phenomenon ( UAP) is considered a competence of the Member States, allowing them to address these phenomena according to the national security needs.

For example, France has established the Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena Research and Information Group (GEIPAN). Therefore, the Commission is not in a position to verify any document or make any consideration regarding publications on this topic.

The Commission and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President remain dedicated to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of the space environment.“

UFO Research in Europe

In addition to the state-run “Groupe d’études et d’informations sur les phénomènes aérospatiaux non identifiés” (GEIPAN) mentioned by Kubilius, which has been investigating UFO sightings in France for the French space agency CNES since 1977, there are numerous civilian citizen-science research organizations in the EU Member States dedicated to the investigation and research of UFOs/UAPs.

For example, in Germany, UFO sightings by the public can be reported to the “Gesellschaft zur Erforschung des UFO-Phänomens” (GEP).

In addition, the University of Würzburg is home to the “Interdisciplinary Research Center for Extraterrestrial Studies” (IFEX), one of the few academic research centers in Europe and worldwide where, in addition to space technologies, UFOs and UAPs are officially researched as part of a university’s research portfolio.

In addition, the British Ministry of Defence has published the files of its former UFO office through the country’s National Archives.

Government UFO investigations and releases of files have also taken place, and continue to take place, in Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine.

The fundamental challenge in resolving the nature of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) lies with acquiring definitive evidence beyond any reasonable doubt. The quality of the scientific data must be good enough to make skeptics sound unreasonable.

A single high-resolution image of a UAP or direct access to UAP materials is worth more than a million blurry images or eight billion likes on social media. How can we get that data?

One way is to check the archives of the U.S. government. The Pentagon, the Intelligence Community, the Space Command and the FBI have been collecting enormous data over the past century for the benefit of national security.

This database is much larger than all the data collected by astronomical observatories in human history, because the funding allocated to collect it exceeds the funding for science by at least two orders of magnitude.

Despite this data collection being motivated by down-to-Earth concerns, it could reveal a new cosmic truth akin to finding a package in our mailbox.

Such a finding would inform us that we are not at the top of the cosmic food chain because the senders of the package managed to reach us before we reached them.

This would bring a much-needed sense of cosmic modesty to our long-term priorities. International politics will be dwarfed by interplanetary politics.

The U.S. government already made cosmic discoveries.

In the 1960s, the Vela satellites attempted to verify the compliance of the Soviet Union with the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, and discovered gamma-ray bursts as the birth sites of black holes at the edge of the observable universe (as reviewed here).

Of course, we do not need the U.S. government to tell us about unusual objects in the sky. We can simply look up. The sky is not classified.

Only the most advanced sensors operated by the U.S. government are classified. This is the rationale for the Galileo Project, which under my leadership aims to resolve the nature of UAP by constructing dedicated new observatories.

Astronomical observatories focus on a small portion of the sky at any given time and ignore objects that maneuver in the Earth’s atmosphere and hence are different from meteors.

The existing Galileo Observatories offer a new architecture whereby a set of infrared cameras, visible-light cameras, radio sensors and acoustic microphones monitor the entire sky at all times.

A new paper reporting the first triangulation results from the Galileo research team will be shared with the public shortly. The Galileo Project is currently designing its fourth observatory in Carl Sagan’s old residence in Ithaca, New York.

The design of this observatory will be unique, aiming to resolve UAP orbs by imaging them at high resolution and taking their spectrum to infer their composition. The orb imager observatory concept was described here.

According to a new poll, Republicans in Minnesota appear to have agood chance of winning their first statewide political race in 20 years.

Released yesterday, the poll was conducted by KSTP/SurveyUSA and asked 654 likely voters about their preferences in the races for U.S. Senate, governor, attorney general, secretary of state, and state auditor.

The survey was conducted from Sept. 9 to Sept. 14 and has a credibility interval of ±4.4%.

In the race for state auditor, Republican Scott Jensen, a medical doctor and 2022 nominee for governor, had a 7-point lead over DFLer Zack Filipovich, an accountant and former member of the Duluth City Council.

According to the poll, 43% of respondents selected Jensen when asked who they would vote for if the state auditor election were held today. Meanwhile, 36% of those surveyed said they would vote for Filipovich, and 17% were undecided.

Jensen’s lead is likely attributed to his high name-ID from his 2022 campaign for governor.

In the race for attorney general, Republican Ron Schutz had a lead over incumbent attorney general Keith Ellison, although the lead was within the margin of error. In that poll, 45% of respondents said they would vote for Schutz, 43% picked Ellison, and 12% were undecided.

Four years ago, Ellison won reelection to a second term by less than one point. As the KSTP/SurveyUSA poll indicates, Ellison’s bid for a third term could be just as close.

Meanwhile, DFL Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan and Republican Michele Tafoya were tied at 42% in the new KSTP/SurveyUSA poll. This result is the fourth poll in recent days to show the race for Senate in Minnesota is within the margin of error.

Last week, TIPP released a poll showing Tafoya trailing Flanagan by two points. Just two days ago, a poll from a GOP-aligned firm showed Flanagan with a 1-point lead over Tafoya. Another poll released this month by Quantus Insights had Flanagan leading by 3.8 points. As such, the newest poll adds to the growing consensus that the race is up for grabs.

Surprisingly, the KSTP/SurveyUSA poll showed a close contest in the campaign for secretary of state. According to the poll, DFL incumbent Steve Simon received 40% in the new poll while Republican Tad Jude received 36%. Another 20% of respondents were undecided.

That result was a particular surprise given Simon’s history of winning the office by wide margins. This year, Simon is attempting to win his fourth term as secretary of state.

In the governor’s race, DFL U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar led Republican state House Speaker Lisa Demuth by 7 points; 47% to 40%. In total, 9% of those surveyed were undecided. While the poll shows a lead for Klobuchar, the result represents a big improvement for Demuth.

Last month, KSTP/SurveyUSA’s poll of the Minnesota governor’s race showed Klobuchar at 52% and Demuth at 36%. As such, Klobuchar’s lead has shrunk from 16 points to 7 points.

Overall, the polling results in all five of the statewide races appear to be encouraging for Republicans and worrisome for Democrats.

However, the KSTP/SurveyUSA polls have come under scrutiny in recent weeks after failing to accurately predict Demuth’s win in the GOP gubernatorial primary and the scale of Flanagan’s win the DFL Senate primary.

Regardless, the new poll is sure to increase the intensity of the campaign season on both sides of the aisle as Republicans see an opening and Democrats contemplate losing a statewide race for the first time in two decades.

He was found unconscious in his Palo Alto apartment on July 22, someone called 911 at 10:22 a.m., and he was transported to a hospital, according to the petition. WASHINGTON—The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced the Quantum Genesis Q Competition, an initiative with up to $215 million in planned funding to demonstrate the world’s first fault-tolerant scientifically relevant quantum computers (SRQCs). Applicants are invited to submit proposals to deploy quantum computers with at least 100 logical qubits that are capable of performing hundreds of millions fault-tolerant operations and scientific demonstration programs through a Request for Applications (RFA).

This first-of-a-kind competition aims to accelerate the development and deployment of quantum computers capable of tackling currently intractable problems in chemistry, materials, physics, and applied mathematics. This effort directly supports the goals outlined in the President’s Executive Order on Ushering in the Next Frontier of Quantum Innovation and builds on the recommendations made in the Blueprint for DOE Quantum Supercomputing and today’s Office of Science Advisory Committee report on a Path to an Integrated Quantum Future.

“Through the Quantum Genesis Q Competition, we are building a new era of computational power for the nation through innovative public-private partnerships,” said Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil. “This competition will enable new quantum computing capabilities and unleash new computational frontiers, driving new scientific and technological discoveries that have previously only been theorized.”

The competition is structured in two phases. Phase I will provide fixed awards for early milestones, worth up to $1.5 million per awardee. Phase II will consist of a $100 million general incentive pool to be split amongst awardees that can demonstrate a first-generation SRQC with at least 100 logical qubits, along with two bonus incentive pools, each worth $50 million, for awardees that can demonstrate 150 and 200 logical qubits.

Applications are open to private sector companies. Total planned funding is up to $215 million, with $2.5 million in Fiscal Year 2026 dollars and outyear funding contingent on congressional appropriations.

DOE will hold a virtual informational webinar for potential Quantum Genesis Q Competition applicants on September 25, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Final applications for the competition are due by October 19, 2026.

'Supporting Infrastructure: Quantum High-Performance Computing Validation and Verification Testbed Lab Call

Deploying a first-of-a-kind, scientifically relevant quantum computing capability requires rigorous tools to characterize and validate every layer of the computing stack—from physical hardware and quantum gates to logical architectures, quantum algorithms and applications, and classical control systems. '

The Quantum High-Performance Computing Validation and Verification Testbed Lab Call will draw on the expertise of DOE’s National Laboratories to establish these essential capabilities for the Q Competition and to advance the goals of the Executive Order on Ushering in the Next Frontier of Quantum Innovation.

Applications are open to DOE National Laboratories. Total planned funding is $45 million, with $14 million in Fiscal Year 2026 dollars and outyear funding contingent on congressional appropriations.

A new lawsuit against the city of Dearborn, Mich., and its mayor alleges city officials have used public funds and city property to celebrate Ramadan, while refusing requests from residents to similarly recognize Christian and Jewish holidays.

The lawsuit, filed by the American Freedom Law Center on behalf of Dearborn resident Margot Cleveland, alleges that not only did Mayor Abdullah Hammoud and other city officials ignore her requests for equality, but they also retaliated against her for speaking out.

Cleveland, who is a senior legal correspondent for The Federalist, first brought the issue to the attention of local officials in April 2025 after the city displayed “Ramadan Kareem” banners and a “large, lighted crescent moon” on public property. Meanwhile, no displays were erected for Lent, Passover or Easter.

Cleveland emailed the Dearborn city attorney on April 6, 2025,asking whether Easter and Passover would be given equal recognition, but she received no response.

She later filed a Freedom of Information Act request and found the city had spent public funds on the Ramadan banners and crescent moon display and that the Dearborn Police Department had produced and sold Ramadan-themed shirts bearing the department’s official emblem.

Several months later, Hammoud lashed out at a Christian pastor who raised concerns during a city council meeting about the planned renaming of a street in Dearborn in honor of Osama Siblani—a public supporter of Hezbollah and Hamas.

“Although you live here, I want you to know as mayor, you are not welcome here,” Hammoud told the pastor, according to the lawsuit. “And the day you move out of the city will be the day that I launch a parade celebrating the fact that you moved out of the city.”

The incident led AFLC to send a letter to Hammoud and the city attorney on Cleveland’s behalf, arguing that “the City of Dearborn has become a hostile place for Christians and Jews.”

The letter asked the city to display banners recognizing Christmas, Easter, Rosh Hashanah, and Yom Kippur alongside its Ramadan banners. But once again, the request went unanswered.

However, in February 2026, the city unveiled new crescent-moon-and-star light displays on municipal street lights for Ramadan. Hammoud claimed at the time that the display “reflects who we are as a city.” Once again, city officials failed to sponsor a comparable display for any Christian or Jewish holidays.

Cleveland attempted to raise the issue at several city council meetings and in emails to each individual council member. However, the city attorney, apparently acting on the advice of the mayor, told council members not to communicate with her because she was being represented by counsel, the suit alleges.

AI giant Anthropic has signed an agreement to operate in a proposed $32 billion mega AI centre on Queensland’s Western Downs, marking the company’s first major infrastructure investment in Australia.

Work on the 725-hectare site near Dalby is expected to begin before Christmas and employ 1500 in construction and eventually 1400 in the operational side of the business.

Dalby has a current population of about 12,800 and the project will provide a massive economic boost to the region with the influx of workers and contractors during construction and the permanent workforce.

Anthropic is at the forefront of the global AI revolution, which Elon Musk says will eventually make money irrelevant, supposedly because AI robots will produce more food, housing, transport, and energy than humans can consume, and goods will be super abundant.

Anthropic has experienced unprecedented growth from annual revenue of $500 million in late 2025 to more than $65 billion currently, fueled by massive enterprise adoption of its Claude AI models that will run out of the facility.

The Federal MP for Maranoa David Littleproud sees the project as a massive boost for the Western Downs economy and is confident that the massive amounts of water and electricity required for the site will be available, including from gas resources near Dalby and solar farms.

The facility will require the equivalent of the output of the Eraring Power Station, comparable to the energy use of roughly 1.5 million average Australian households.

It will be called the Western Downs Digital Park and aims to come online by 2027, with the broader build-out expected to take four to six years.

Unlike the unrealistic Federal Government proposals that aim to restrict new data centres strictly to 100% renewables, the Queensland state government will let the facility draw from a diverse local energy mix, including existing gas-fired power and the Kogan coal-fired power station.

Littleproud says Anthropic is expected to cover full grid-connection costs and go to market for long-term power agreements. Anthropic’s lease agreement at the site remains subject to final approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) and local council planning sign-offs.

Anthropic is heavily backed by tech giants. Amazon has committed to investing up to $33 billion, while Alphabet (Google) maintains a massive multi-billion-dollar stake and tech infrastructure partnership.

Premier David Crisafulli said the project was a direct result of his recent trade mission to the US. “This is a major win that will deliver more jobs, put more energy into Queensland’s grid and drive down power prices for Queenslanders,” he said.

“My meeting with Anthropic during the trade mission was to outline why Queensland was the place to invest, with energy security, locations to invest and a streamlined approvals process to get it right.”

Mr Crisafulli has promised data centre investment will drive down energy costs for consumers, and companies must add energy to the local grid.

The $32 billion complex is actually an infrastructure partnership where Anthropic is the primary anchor tenant.

While the physical facility is being built by Singapore-based developer Zerra DC, Anthropic’s massive capital backing and global user base for Claude are what make anchoring a multi-gigawatt mega-project financially viable.

President Vladimir Putin has extended Russia’s ban on imports of certain Western food products through the end of 2028,a measure first imposed in response to anti-Russian sanctions more than a decade ago. The decree was published on the Kremlin’s website on Thursday.

The restrictions were introduced in August 2014 in retaliation for sanctions imposed on Russia by a number of Western nations that refused to recognize Crimea’s referendum to join the Russian Federation. The predominantly Russian-speaking Black Sea region voted to secede from Ukraine following a Western-backed coup in Kiev earlier that year.
