SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The parents of a woman who was found shot to death alongside her husband and 13-year-old daughter in their San Carlos home say they had urged their daughter to seek help for her husband’s worsening mental health symptoms the day before the family was killed.
San Diego police identified the victims as 54-year-old Amy Voight; her husband, David Voight; and their 13-year-old daughter, Mya.
Amy’s parents, Mary and Jerry Austin, said Amy was a devoted mother and accomplished professional who had worked as a digital forensics analyst for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
“She was extremely bright and just the most amazing person,” Mary Austin said.
The Austins said David Voight was a highly decorated U.S. Navy warrant officer who served for about 30 years, including alongside Navy SEALs in explosive ordnance disposal and in war zones including Iraq and Afghanistan.
The couple said David suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and that his symptoms had recently worsened.
“You could visibly see there was something really wrong,” Mary Austin said. “He was fidgety. You could tell.”
The Austins said they encouraged Amy to take David to a Department of Veterans Affairs clinic for help. They said she did so Sept. 15, which was also her birthday, and spoke with a receptionist and a nurse.
According to Jerry Austin, Amy asked whether David could receive something to help with his anxiety, depression and frustration.
“She says, ‘Can you do anything to him to help him calm down? He’s frustrated, anxiety, depression,’” Austin said.
Austin said Amy was told the counselors were busy and that she needed to make an appointment.
The following day, Sept. 16, Amy, David and Mya were found shot to death inside their San Carlos home.
San Diego police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
“It’s terrible, and our pain is just starting,” Jerry Austin said.
Jerry Austin, a Navy veteran who also suffers from PTSD, said veterans experiencing mental health crises should have immediate access to help.
“My clinic that I go to is in Lancaster, California. It’s a small clinic. It is fantastic,” he said. “They greet you at the door. They take care of you. They are concerned about it.”
The Department of Veterans Affairs said it could not comment on the specific case because of privacy concerns.
“What’s being alleged regarding VA services is not accurate,” VA Press Secretary Quinn Slaven said in a statement. “All VA healthcare facilities offer same-day mental healthcare to all Veterans who request it.”

An amendment can’t be declared unconstitutional, by definition it’s in the constitution. I think the issue with this scenario is applying talking points from today to that time period. This was also when women gained the right to vote in many other countries worldwide so it’d be weird to go back on that, especially so soon after it got ratified
I think maybe the only way it’d happen is in the 30s or 40s after some sort of fascist coup that replaced the constitution entirely
