But that wasn’t the only failure. Only six campus PD officers were on site that day. There was no security briefing before the event. There was no written plan. Charlie’s security was larger than the campus police. No drones were deployed or available by UVU campus PD, and TPUSA was not authorized to run their own. Nearby Orem PD has a sophisticated drone program but were never called to assist. CCTV cameras on campus were not monitored in realtime. Chief Long requested additional resources, but the request was not granted by the university president. 
Only UVU had legal authority to secure, surveil, block, and manage access on campus. Charlie’s security could only maintain safety inside his “bubble” a space of 20-30 feet around him. Charlie deserved the best, and he didn’t get it. But nothing novel or extraordinary was required to keep CK and the crowd safe. The basics were not even close to being covered."

Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman were among the tech leaders who backed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s proposal for a slowdown, marking a rare show of unity.

The push from top AI leaders came amid a broader warning about the fate of humanity as AI researchers sounded the alarm last week, sparked by a post from Jacob Coxon, who announced that he quit his job at Anthropic.

Coxon, who also worked at OpenAI, wrote that the leading AI labs are “gambling with our lives.” Researchers quickly chimed in, with Evan Hubinger, an alignment lead at Anthropic, also backing Coxon’s statements.

“Jacob is correct here — we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade,” Hubinger wrote.

The Trump administration has pushed back on tech leaders’ calls for greater limits on AI. President Donald Trumppushed out a flurry of posts on Truth Social on Monday, referring to fears over AI as a “hoax” and a “scam.”

National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett told CNBC on Tuesday that the private sector is the “right place” to address concerns with AI. He said the government continues to monitor the industry and will use “law enforcement when necessary to make sure that the firms are acting responsibly.”

Musk said Monday that his peer-review method may not be a perfect solution, but he added, “The odds that you will find issues are dramatically greater.”

SpaceX acquired Musk’s AI business xAI in February, then completed an acquisition of AI code-generation startup Cursor for $60 billion in August. The merged entity is working to make SpaceXAI’s Grok models and tools more relevant to developers, in line with competing products from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.

Musk acknowledged that rival AI labs that compete with SpaceX

haven’t agreed to his proposal. Amodei, in his essay, suggested that AI labs could agree to third-party technology assessments from “embedded evaluators” who would verify safety practices.

Trump has suggested that any attempts to pace the development of AI would give China the upper hand in developing the technology. Amodei echoed those concerns over the weekend, calling it the “toughest dilemma.”

While Musk is arguing for industry self-regulation, his companies have sought to block states’ laws governing AI. For example, xAI sued the state of California, trying to negate its AI Training Data Transparency Act (AB 2013), and sued Minnesota over a law that bans so-called nudify apps in the state.

SpaceX’s AI unit is facing myriad probes and lawsuits after its Grok image generators were used to create and distribute so-called deepfake porn, depicting child sexual abuse or intimate images based on photos or videos of real adults who did not consent.

Shares of SpaceX closed down 3.15% on Tuesday amid the national conversation about AI risks and regulation.

A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry on Monday called AI companies’ push for a slowdown “fear mongering,” according to an English translation of their remarks published by Reuters.

“What I’m suggesting here is it’s a step in the right direction and it’s something that we do quickly,” Musk said. “I think it’s probably something that China would agree to.”

Sanchez told aspiring journalists of his decades of professional experience in a wide-ranging lecture at the World Youth Festival (WYF) in Yekaterinburg, Russia on Tuesday. The talk touched on the freedom of the press, the psychology of a good journalist, andthe art of conducting a good interview.

“The freedoms that I lacked working at CNN, the freedoms that I lacked working in NBC, working in Western media, I now find working in Russia. I feel more free. I feel like I have more control of my own narrative,” he said.

Messaging is all about empowerment, and that means you can’t be afraid to ask the question because the question is the power.

Sanchez stressed that journalism and the right to ask questions and gather ideas from different people serve as “a democratizing force in the world.”

“You have to empower yourself. You cannot be afraid,” he said, adding that aspiring journalists should be prepared to interview international leaders such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, or Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The lecture by the veteran news anchor was organized as part of RT’s educational outreach project, the RT Academy.

The US government is not treating Kepler as a science project. On July 29, 2026, the Commerce Department announced letters of intent for up to $874 million in CHIPS Act incentives across seven companies working on compute supply chain problems. Kepler was listed for up to $245 million to develop high-performance AI memory in the US using 3D and ferroelectric technologies. GlobalFoundries was listed separately for up to $300 million for co-packaged optics.

That is serious backing. It is also not a blank check.

The Commerce Department said the letters of intent still require further diligence before final awards, and each company would give the government a minority, non-controlling equity stake as a condition of funding. Wired reported that Kepler has secured $468 million from investors including Intel Capital, AMD Ventures and Gates Frontier. You don't get that group around the table on a vague promise. You get it because memory has become one of the ugliest constraints in AI infrastructure.

The shortage is already reaching buyers

TrendForce said in March that conventional DRAM contract prices were expected to rise 58% to 63% quarter over quarter in the second quarter of 2026, while NAND flash contract prices were expected to rise 70% to 75%. The firm tied the move to AI server demand, cloud providers locking up supply through long-term agreements and suppliers shifting more capacity toward HBM and server-related products.

Hard drives are feeling it too. Western Digital CEO Tiang Yew Tan said on the company's 2026 earnings call that Western Digital was "pretty much" sold out for calendar 2026, with firm purchase orders from its top seven customers and longer agreements extending into 2027 and 2028 for some of them. That's what scarcity looks like before it reaches the shelf.

The U.S. war with Iran cost the Pentagon an estimated $38.1 billion through Aug. 1and could cost another $2 billion to $3 billion for each additional month of fighting, according to a report released Tuesday by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

More than half of the cost has come from replacing missiles and other munitionsused during the conflict. Increased flying hours cost another $10.4 billion, while higher fuel prices added $2.7 billion, CBO estimated. The war has led fuel prices around the world to rise since President Donald Trump launched it Feb. 28.

The war has also consumed as much as two-thirds of the nation’s missile-defense interceptors since June 2025, largely as a result of the U.S. helping defend Israelagainst Iranian attacks, leaving the U.S. with reduced inventories for several years, CBO warned.

“Rebuilding DoD’s inventory of interceptors would probably take at least five years — even if production was increased,” CBO said in the report, which Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., requested. He is the top Democrat on the House Budget Committee.

The CBO estimates follow the first comprehensive accounting of the war’s cost and military toll, released late Monday by the Defense Department’s inspector general. The two accountings came to similar conclusions.

The release of the new calculations could fuel debate over whether the cost of the war, which Trump initially said would last only weeks, is worth it. Democrats are campaigning against the war ahead of the Nov. 3 U.S. election and pointing to higher costs for fuel, food and other things linked with the conflict, which Trump has framed as preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Risks of missile shortages

The shortage of missiles could become “especially problematic” in a conflict with an adversary possessing large numbers of ballistic and cruise missiles, CBO said, specifically citing China and a potential conflict over Taiwan.

The war has also raised consumer prices by reducing oil and natural gas shipmentsthrough the Strait of Hormuz and disrupting Red Sea shipping.

U.S. crude topped $106 Tuesday and Brent rose above $109 after Saudi Arabia reportedly canceled shipments following the closure of a major pipeline that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, regular gasoline averaged about $4.33 per gallon nationally, up almost 18 cents from a week earlier and $1.15 from a year ago, according to AAA.

CBO and Pentagon calculate war’s costs

The Pentagon estimated that the war had cost $33.4 billion as of June 29: $7.4 billion in incremental operating costs, $22.3 billion to replace expended munitions and $3.7 billion in equipment losses.

The pace of weapons use created “strategic inventory shortfalls,” the Defense Department watchdog said. Shortages of solid rocket motors, explosives, propellants and skilled workers have complicated efforts to replenish U.S. stockpiles.

Iranian strikes also damaged or destroyed“hundreds of buildings and structures” at bases across eight Middle Eastern countries, according to Monday’s DOD IG report. Dozens of aircraft have been damaged or destroyed, including four F-15E fighter jets, an F-35A, seven KC-135 refueling aircraft, seven helicopters and more than 30 drones.

The F-35A costs as much as $92 million per plane, while the F-15E, which is no longer produced, cost $31.1 million in 1998, according to the U.S. Air Force.

The Pentagon report noted State Department costs of $79.2 million for evacuations and other contingencies for people from the region when the war began. And it calculated $184 million in diplomatic site damage across Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The Defense Department did not provide estimates for rebuilding plans and funding sources for damaged military bases.

S&P 500 edges higher ahead of pivotal Fed rate decision: Live updates

The S&P 500 moved higher on Wednesday ahead of a pivotal interest rate decision from the Federal Reserve that could mark the beginning of a new hiking cycle over the next few months.

The broad market index was up 0.3%, while the Nasdaq Composite added 0.6%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average

shed 106 points, or 0.2%.

Futures markets were pricing in a quarter-point hike for Wednesday with 92.9% odds, according to the CME FedWatch tool. Odds of an additional quarter-point hike were 39.1% for the Fed’s October meeting and 26.4% for the Fed’s December meeting.

Brent Wilsey, chief investment officer of San Diego-based Wilsey Asset Management, said in a note on Wednesday that the Fed holding rates steady could have damaging ramifications.

“That could surprise stocks, and surprises are rarely received well in markets, and it could also damage the Fed’s credibility, and reignite concerns that the central bank is caving to political pressure to keep rates steady,” he said.

The central bank’s decision on Wednesday comes amid pressure from the White House to leave rates where they are.

“One of the biggest sticking points with inflation is the rise in diesel prices, which has the potential to increase costs for so many areas of the economy from transportation, farming, and shipping,” Wilsey said. “While an interest rate hike won’t cause diesel prices to fall, higher rates could help to calm inflation in other parts of the economy, helping to offset the inflation from higher energy prices.”

U.S. diesel prices hit $6 per gallon on Friday for the first time, amid ongoing supply constraints caused by the Ukraine and Iran wars.

Crude oil prices are holding above $100 a barrel, despite cooling from recent highs. Globalbenchmark Brent crude oil futures fell more than 1% to around $107 per barrel, while

U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures were down 2% to roughly $103 a barrel.

Treasury yields have been spiking on the expectation of higher prices in the economy, with the 10-year last slightly below 5% and the 30-year

at 5.348%.
