Week Ends With Soldering, Lunar Simulations, and Cargo Mission Preps

Expedition 75 wrapped up its week completing a lead-free soldering experiment, simulating a lunar landing, and exercising for research, among other advanced science activities.

The International Space Station residents are also preparing for the arrival of a cargo mission and continuing housekeeping duties.

NASA flight engineer Anil Menon conducted the last run of the MIYOKA investigation that uses a lead-free soldering technique to demonstrate the safe manufacturing and repairing of electronics in microgravity.

He worked in the Harmony module to solder components on a circuit board that will be returned to Earth and compared to identical ground-soldered samples.

Afterward, NASA flight engineer Jack Hathaway placed the cooled-down soldering iron, the completed circuit board, and experiment tools in storage containers then cleaned Harmony’s maintenance work area returning it to its normal configuration.

Menon and Hathway also joined each other in the cupola and carefully cleaned its seven windows.

The duo used gentle wiping techniques and specialized materials to prevent scratches on the windows then taped up gaps between the panes to prevent dust buildup.

Station commander Jessica Meir began her day in the cupola for a lunar landing simulation. Working with hand controllers, a laptop computer, and audio signals, Meir practiced a lunar descent while adjusting speed and controlling orientation.

The Manual Piloting study may help researchers understand how microgravity can affect cognitive function potentially leading to disorientation while operating a spacecraft. At the end of her shift, she partnered with Menon for ultrasonic inspections inside the Zarya module.

Flight engineer Sophie Adenot of ESA (European Space Agency) began her shift working out on the new European Enhanced Exploration Exercise Device (E4D).

The E4D’s controller software tracked her performance helping researchers evaluate its effectiveness for use on future long-duration missions.

She later downloaded biomedical data collected from her smart watch to a computer tablet then held a conference with doctors on the ground for the RelaxPro experiment that seeks to reduce crew stress and improve sleep quality.

Flight engineer Andrey Fedyaev worked throughout Friday in the orbital outpost’s Roscosmos segment inspecting and cleaning laptop computers, power supply units, and ventilation systems.

A Progress 96 cargo spacecraft from Roscosmos is orbiting Earth toward the International Space Station for a docking on Saturday.

Flight engineers Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina will be on duty monitoring Progress during its automated rendezvous and docking to Poisk module scheduled for 9:46 a.m. EDT.

After about two hours of leak and pressure checks, Dubrov and Kikina will open the spacecraft’s hatch to begin unpacking nearly three tons of food, fuel, and supplies.

States Campaign to Host the US Space Academy

Campaign season is in full swing across the US. Yet this year’s hottest race might just be one that’s not on the ballot.

Ever since President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Aug. 28 establishing a US Space Academy, states have been coming out of the woodwork to make the case for why the school should call it home.

The EO called for a civilian, NASA-led answer to the military services academies, and created a commission to sort out further details, such as curriculum, service requirements, and what would go into establishing the school.

Ballot access: On Sept. 10, NASA laid out initial details in an RFI, with formal proposals to potentially come later.

The plan: break ground by 2027, seat an interim cohort of 300 students at partner institutions in 2028, and open a permanent campus by 2031.

For scale, the last state competition Trump launched—Space Command HQ—kicked off in 2019 and wasn’t settled until last year.

Not just any location can become a Space Academy. NASA wants:

A permanent site of at least 300 acres,

Proximity to NASA or university facilities, which would be a plus,

Capacity for 1,200 undergrads, scalable to 4,000.

Stump speeches: All states were invited to bid, with each submitting a single proposal routed through the governor’s designee. Proposals must include location, timeline plans, cost estimates, and possible partnerships.

Submissions aren’t due until October 26, but a few states are already working the crowd:

Texas: Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) is the only governor to announce a team, tapping state Rep. Greg Bonnen (R-TX) to build a bid around JSC with the Texas Space Commission. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Brian Babin (R-TX) are lobbying too—loudly enough that Trump called Cruz out at the EO signing.

Florida: Sen. Ashley Moody (R-FL) filed the STARS Act on Tuesday to write Florida into law as the academy’s home—which would have to pass through Sen. Cruz’s committee—and is working with state aerospace authority Space Florida on the RFI response. She and Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) also led a bipartisan delegation letter to the White House on Sept. 3 touting KSC and the Cape.

Alabama: Rep. Dale Strong (R-AL) rounded up the delegation for a letter pitching North Alabama, leaning on Marshall, Redstone, the Missile Defense Agency, and Army SMDC—and the future home of US Space Command.

Nevada: Spaceport developer Rob Lauer isn’t waiting on the governor, and wants 500 acres of desert west of Las Vegas. His parcel runs 240 acres—short of NASA’s floor—but butts up against 100,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management holdings.

NASA will review the responses and make recommendations to the commission, which reports to the White House for a final decision. However, standing up a service academy takes an act of Congress, and no lawmakers sit on the commission.

Split ticket: Colorado looks strong on paper with the Air Force Academy, multiple Space Force bases, and Space Command HQ, which won’t finish decamping for Huntsville until 2031.

But Sen. John Hickenlooper (D-CO) called the plan “duplicative, costly, and unserious.” Chief of Space Operations Gen. Douglas Schiess also said this week the Space Force will keep commissioning ~100 Guardians a year out of the Air Force Academy regardless.

Undeclared: With weeks left on the clock, expect a few more hats in the ring:

Ohio: Contains NASA Glenn, Wright-Patterson, and the National Space Intelligence Center. It previously bid for Space Command HQ but was not a finalist.

New Mexico: Home to Spaceport America, White Sands, and Kirtland—and one of six finalists for Space Command HQ.

Mississippi, Virginia, Maryland, California, and Louisiana: All home to existing NASA facilities, and deep aerospace benches.

CMSSF highlights cyber Guardians’ role in creating joint decision advantage

“The future will be data-dense,” Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force John Bentivegna emphasized during his keynote at the Air and Space Forces Association’s 2026 Air, Space and Cyber Conference.

“The Space Force is arming and growing Guardians with a decision architecture to underpin the lethality of the Joint Force,” he said. “Sensing what is happening, connecting the right users and sensors, understanding the environment, and deciding with confidence.

But data only becomes combat power when we can collect it, move it, protect it, authenticate it, process it, understand it, and act on it in time.”

Bentivegna emphasized that the decision architecture’s value will depend on the Guardians responsible for defending the data, protecting the networks, and ensuring the information the Joint Force depends on in the most consequential moments of a conflict is still true.

“Cyber is operations,” Bentivegna said. “It is part of the operational terrain and a cross-cutting enterprise function for the Space Force.”

To prepare the cyber career field for that responsibility, Bentivegna said the Space Force follows a three-part approach: train, test and trust.

Train

Over the past two years, the Space Force has overhauled cyber training. It combined career fields, redesigned curricula at the schoolhouses and updated all initial skills training through the 533rd Training Squadron.

The Officer Training Course introduces cyber operations and the importance of cyber terrain — the networks, systems and digital infrastructure that support space operations — when planning and projecting space power.

“These efforts ensure that our cyber Guardians enter the force with the technical foundation, operational mindset, and mission context needed for the environment that they will defend,” Bentivegna said.

The White House has withdrawn President Trump’s nomination of Richard Schroyer to run Immigration and Customs Enforcement, after Schroyer’s nomination failed to advance in the Senate.

Schroyer was serving as senior adviser to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin when Mr. Trump nominated him in June to run ICE as an assistant DHS secretary. Republican Sen. Rand Paul stalled Schroyer’s advancement as he demanded details of investigations into agent-involved shootings in Minnesota. Schroyer didn’t make it past the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Who is Lance Schroyer?

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Schroyer served for 29 years with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He later became a major with the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, overseeing the Emergency Services Unit. DHS said his experience includes inter-agency coordination, tactical planning, and policy implementation involving constitutional safeguards. He specialized in inter-agency collaboration, complex tactical planning, and constitutional safeguards in policy implementation.

Oklahoma’s Own interviewed Schroyer for a story in 2018 as he helped secure the Oklahoma State Capitol during the teacher walkout.

He served as senior adviser to the Secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullin, also from Oklahoma. This role involves coordinating immigration enforcement strategy and serving as a liaison among local, regional, and federal law enforcement agencies.

Why was Schroyer’s nomination withdrawn?

The White House had not publicly explained the decision as of Thursday.

Before the withdrawal, Schroyer’s nomination had not received a confirmation hearing before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

What’s next for ICE?

The withdrawal leaves ICE without a Senate-confirmed director. The agency has not had a Senate-confirmed leader since Sarah Saldaña left the position in January 2017.Since then, ICE has been led by a series of acting officials as nominees have failed to win Senate confirmation.

The White House had not announced a replacement nominee as of Thursday.

A man who sprayed vinegar on left-wing US Representative Ilhan Omar during a town hall in Minneapolis was sentenced to 14 months in prison on Thursday.

Omar, a Democratic politician of Somali origin, was speaking on January 27 when Anthony Kazmierczak rushed toward the podium and sprayed her with liquid from a syringe. He was quickly tackled by security.

According to witnesses, he shouted at Omar, “You’re splitting Minnesotans apart.”The liquid was later identified as apple cider vinegar.

“I’m ok. I’m a survivor so this small agitator isn’t going to intimidate me from doing my work. I don’t let bullies win,” Omar wrote on X following the incident.

Kazmierczak reached a deal with prosecutors and apologized to the congresswoman. According to court documents, he has “a history of mental and emotional health concerns” and other health issues related to his 2022 Parkinson’s disease diagnosis. Judge Joan Ericksen said during sentencing that his actions were premeditated and not “a spur-of-the-moment act.”

Violence against public figures has increased in the US in recent years, with Republicans and Democrats blaming each other’s increasingly belligerent rhetoric.

A vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause, Omar has called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “war criminal” and accused him of “actively committing genocide against the Palestinian people.”She has condemned Israel’s war in Gaza and supported the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement targeting Israel.

In 2019, the Israeli authorities barred her and fellow Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib from entering the country. Omar has faced accusations of invoking anti-Semitic tropes in her remarks about Israel and its supporters, and in 2019, the advocacy group StopAntisemitism named her the ‘Antisemite of the Year’ following a public vote.

Omar has denied accusations of anti-Semitism but apologized for some of her past statements, saying her “intention is never to offend my constituents or Jewish Americans as a whole.”

Eric Zahnd, 53 — the longest-serving prosecutor in Platte County history — was found dead inside Platte County Courthouse at around 2:15 p.m. Thursday, the local sheriff’s office confirmed, according to FOX 4.

Zahnd, who has served as the county’s lead prosecuting attorney since 2002,played a key role in passing Jessica’s Law, which puts child rapists behind bars for life.

Midwest Braces For Diesel Crisis After Exxon's Joliet Refinery Suffers Disruption

A major refinery in the US Midwest went offline this week after a power outage, adding to global refining disruptions as US diesel prices reach record highs.

Exxon Mobil shut its 275,000-barrel-a-day Joliet refinery in Illinois on Sunday after a power failure triggered the facility's safety flare, Reuters reported. A Thursday filing also disclosed that floodwater had overwhelmed a pump at the plant.

Exxon traced the power outage to ComEd's primary and secondary lines supplying the refinery and said it had fully restored electricity by Thursday. Power restoration, however, does not mean fuel production has resumed.

Located about 40 miles southwest of Chicago, Joliet can produce about 11 million gallons of gasoline and diesel daily, primarily for Midwest consumers. Its processing capacity represents roughly 6% of Midwest refining capacity and 1.5% nationally.

A prolonged shutdown would tighten regional fuel availability and risk further price increases across Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

"There's an additional likelihood of further price increases in the Great Lakes. Gas: OH is at *high* risk of largest jump, WI, IN are at *med* risk of moderate jump, MI, IL at low/med risk but could go past $5/gal. diesel: will likely jump in most these areas mod/large jump," Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, wrote on X.

ESA selects Iceye, Leonardo for Europe’s EOGS studies

The European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded two contracts – one to ICEYE and one to Leonardo – to carry out architecture studies for the EU’s planned Earth Observation Governmental Service (EOGS).

This aims to boost the EU’s space-based surveillance capabilities. Funding for the work is from the European Commission. And it officially forms part of Element 1 of ESA’s European Resilience from Space for Earth Observation (ERS-EO) programme.

EOGS

After ERS-EO, work on the EOGS programme is planned to begin in 2028.

EOGS comprises satellites, ground infrastructure, data and information, processing facilities, and distribution infrastructure. While drawing on commercial services, it will also involve the sharing of Member States’ own space capacities.

Surveillance capabilities

“ERS-EO is an ambitious new programme designed to strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy and resilience through space-based intelligence and surveillance capabilities of Element 1, allowing for the preparation and acceleration of the EOGS programme,” said the ESA’s Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Simonetta Cheli (pictured).

“These two contracts are an important early milestone to construct and define the space architecture and the technological foundations for the initiative, and accelerate the development of independent European capabilities for security, crisis response and strategic autonomy – and we look forward to the outcomes of these studies next year.”

The signing of the contracts took place at the World Space Business Week in Paris.

Iceye actually leads a consortium, ARISE. Other members of this group include Indra Space, Rheinmetall, and HISDESAT.

This core team is also complemented with Starion, T-systems, SafranAI, Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions (RISS), Creotech Instruments, and CTI Aeroespacial. Finally, there will also be consulting support from FSO Instruments, OroraTech and Unseenlabs.

“Europe cannot defend what it cannot see,” said Rafał Modrzewski, CEO and Co-founder of ICEYE.

“The study awarded today will help fundamentally define Europe’s future architecture for resilience and security. The first step toward a federated system of interoperable sovereign space capabilities delivering European-scale security and situational awareness.

“We are proud to work closely with European institutions to help build an environment in which Europe’s technology companies can scale in Europe, become global champions, and ensure that critical sovereign capabilities remain firmly in European hands.”

The era of unconditional friendship with the US is coming to an end, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said, blaming the Trump administration for the deterioration in relations.

Merz, once seen as one of Germany’s most pro-American politicians, has repeatedly clashed with US President Donald Trump over issues ranging from the Iran war to German domestic policy.

“The era of unconditional transatlantic friendship is probably over for the foreseeable future,” the chancellor told fellow members of his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) on Thursday at a campaign event in Berlin ahead of this weekend’s regional parliamentary election.

“We are seeing a change in political attitudes on the other side of the Atlantic, as well as a shift in how the transatlantic alliance is viewed, which we perhaps did not think possible,” he added.

In April, Merz argued that the US lacks a coherent strategy in the Middle East and was “humiliated” by Iran in the conflict. Trump responded by telling him to focus on “fixing his broken country.”

A month later, the chancellor, who previously worked with US financial giant BlackRock, said he no longer views the US as the “land of opportunity,” adding that he would discourage his own children from traveling there for work or study.

This summer, Merz warned the Trump administration against interfering in German elections. His remarks came as the US State Department launched a nearly $5 million grant program to support projects aimed at what it called strengthening democratic resilience, the rule of law, freedom of speech and the press, and human rights in Europe.

“It was long overdue that we now take more responsibility for ourselves,” the chancellor said on Thursday, defending Germany’s increased defense spending. The country will strengthen its military and continue funding Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, despite a “structural crisis” in its own economy, Merz said.

Since returning to the White House in early 2025, Trump has imposed tariffs on most US trading partners and continued his longstanding criticism of European immigration policies.He has also revived plans to acquire Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, and attacked Merz over his criticism of the US war with Iran, accusing him of “doing a terrible job”as chancellor.

In 2025, US Vice President J.D. Vance shocked many European officials at the annual Munich Security Conference where, instead of focusing on Russia, he criticized European governments over what he described as the erosion of free speech and “out-of-control migration.”

Vance also criticized Germany’s ‘firewall’, the longstanding refusal by mainstream parties, including Merz’s CDU, to work with the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD), now the second-largest party in the parliament. “Democracy rests on the sacred principle that the voice of the people matters. There’s no room for firewalls. You either uphold the principle or you don’t,” he said.

In May, the Pentagon announced plans to withdraw around 5,000 of the more than 36,000 active-duty US troops stationed in Germany, marking a further strain on military ties between the allies.

Russia launches new military asset into orbit

The classified satellite blasted off from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome overnight

Russia has launched a classified military payload into space, carrying out its second orbital mission in a week.

The military launch took place overnight from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia’s Arkhangelsk Region and was conducted by the country’s aerospace forces.

The exact nature of the payload was not disclosed, though it appears to be a satellite. Officials said the spacecraft successfully established communications with ground control after reaching orbit.

A medium-lift Soyuz-2.1b rocket was used for the mission, according to the Defense Ministry and space agency Roscosmos.

The launch comes as Russia is expanding its satellite capabilities, including the Rassvet (“Dawn”) low-orbit broadband constellation developed by private aerospace firm Bureau 1440.

Moscow plans to have 156 Rassvet satellites in orbit by the end of 2026 and around 900 by 2035.

President Vladimir Putin has said that the network “doesn’t fall short of” Elon Musk’s Starlink and “may even surpass it in some ways.”

Moscow is also developing heavy attack drones with satellite-based control, which could make them more resistant to electronic warfare and jamming.

On Wednesday, Roscosmos carried out another launch using a Soyuz-2.1b rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, sending the Progress MS-35 cargo spacecraft into orbit with 2.4 tons of supplies for the International Space Station (ISS).

The unmanned freighter is scheduled to dock with the station over the weekend.

Ukrainian Drone Hits Russian Nuclear Plant Days After Trump Energy Truce Plea

President Trump raised eyebrows when on Monday he declared that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop attacking each other's oil and energy infrastructure, amid global crude and diesel supply problems related mostly to the Hormuz Strait crisis.

But then within days later it became clear that the default reality on the ground has persisted, as energy sites continue to get pummeled. And it's not only refineries and ports which have continued getting hit, but as of Thursday morning a Russian nuclear plant was apparently targeted in a Ukrainian drone attack.

A drone hit the cooling tower of a reactor unit at Russia's Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, the International Atomic Energy Agency has announced Friday.

The unit was operating at the time, but its operating mode was unchanged and no fire broke out.

The UN agency's director Rafael Grossi declared in a statement that "all attacks on nuclear facilities are unacceptable as they could endanger nuclear safety and security, irrespective of where they occur."

He urged "maximum military restraint to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident" - which remains a top dangerous reality of the battlefield in the context of the Ukraine war.

A suicide car bomber and accompanying gunmen struck a police facility in northwestern Pakistan on Friday, killing at least 16 people – including five police officers – during prayers at a mosque, officials have said.

The vehicle rammed into an outer ⁠wall of the police facility in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province’s Kohat city, provincial police chief Zulfikar Hameed was reported as saying. “It was a suicide attack,” he added.

Police personnel, their family members, and other civilians were offering Friday prayers at the mosque when the attackers struck. The explosion damaged the mosque and nearby structures, and created a crater in the area, reports said.

Security forces were engaged in a gun battle with the attackers and one assailant wearing an explosives-vest was killed, the police said in a statement.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the casualties.

Militant attacks have risen in Pakistan’s border areas in recent months, with violence flaring up after each attack. Fifteen police officers were killed in a similar car bombing and ambush in Bannu in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in May.

Islamabad has accused Afghanistan of hosting the militants and the Pakistani military has launched attacks inside Afghanistan in response. Kabul, however, says the strikes are hitting civilians, including women and children.

The bombing of a mosque in Islamabad in February killed more than 30 people, and in March, a Pakistani attack on a drug rehabilitation center in Kabul killed hundreds, according to Afghan officials.

Former US Ambassador Barred From Leaving Allied Nation Speaks Out To Daily Caller

Former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Morse Tan tells the Daily Caller that South Korea has placed travel bans on him, describing it as a freedom of speech violation after having criticized the nation’s president, including for thoughts shared while in the U.S.

Tan shared details about the impending trial, the current state of South Korea, its relationships with North Korea and China, and how the Trump administration is responding.

He has spoken at numerous events in South Korea and the U.S. about what he described as corruption in South Korea’s current administration; his remarks have led to defamation charges against him.

The first followed an event in Washington, D.C., last June, where Tan said: “It is said that [President Lee Jae Myung], as a youth, was involved in gang-raping and murdering a young lady, and as a result was put in juvenile detention and therefore was not able to attend junior high and high school.”

The second count stemmed from what Tan described as “A series of questions relating to what was asked of me” regarding the allegations while speaking at a public event in South Korea last July.

Since returning to South Korea in May to monitor an election, Tan has been barred from leaving the country five times as he awaits trial.

Tan described it as a “show trial,” which has since been delayed until mid-Oct. and could lead to seven years in prison if he is convicted.

“This is wrong on every level and from every angle,” Tan said, adding that he still believes the claims he made. He reiterated that he was merely referring to what others have reported and that many others have made similar claims without facing the same legal scrutiny.

Tan also said he should not be held criminally liable for something he said in good faith about a public figure while in the U.S., adding that the charges are also in violation of free speech protections in South Korean law, as well as treaties that it has signed.

“From whichever angle you want to look at it, this case really is not meritorious,” Tan, a former dean of Liberty University School of Law, said, adding that he has “not been given due process.”

While he said the case would be unfair to anyone, the barring of a former Trump administration ambassador is “a punch in Trump’s face,” Tan told the Caller.

Tan told the Caller that he is speaking with members of the administration, but didn’t want to get into detail about who he spoke with or what options are being discussed.

A spokesperson for the State Department told the Daily Caller that the administration has “no higher priority than the safety and security of Americans.”

“The United States firmly supports every American’s right to freedom of expression and stands ready to raise our concerns directly with foreign governments when they use criminal defamation or similar laws to punish U.S. citizens for political speech,” the spokesperson said. “In particular, we are concerned by any action taken by a foreign government to apply its law to pursue charges against a U.S. citizen for statements made in the United States.”

The spokesperson added that they take concerns of any American citizens subject to exit bans seriously, but due to privacy considerations, they had no more to share on the specifics of Tan’s case.

Tan told the Caller that those running South Korea today “should be thought of as North Korean operatives.”

“What you’re talking about is what President Trump correctly identified as a revolution and a purge,” Tan said, adding that “pro-North Korean elements have seized power here in South Korea. And so they are rapidly communizing the country and extinguishing basic rights and freedoms.”

He also argued that although the South Korean people love America, its leadership has turned the Korean peninsula “into a vassal state of the Chinese Communist Party.”

Defense forces strike Orion UAV ground control station, drone launch sites, and warehouses of russians - General Staff

On September 17 and during the night of September 18, units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck a number of key targets belonging to the russian occupiers. It was reported in a statement by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Specifically, near the village of Novofedorivka at the Saky airfield in Crimea, an enemy Orion ground control station for unmanned aerial vehicles was struck.

Military officials explained that the Orion (“Inokhodets”) is a russian reconnaissance and strike unmanned aerial vehicle system with a long endurance (MALE class).

It is capable of remaining airborne for up to 24 hours, conducting electro-optical reconnaissance and target designation at altitudes of up to 7.5 km, as well as carry guided aviation weapons (guided missiles and aerial bombs with a total weight of up to 200–250 kg) to engage ground targets.

“The destruction of the ground control station significantly limits the occupiers’ use of these systems in the relevant operational area,” the General Staff emphasized.

In addition, a storage, preparation, and launch site for attack UAVs was struck in the area of Donetsk.

Furthermore, in the Luhansk Region, the destruction of an enemy ammunition depot near Dovzhansk and a logistics depot of the occupying forces near Kypuche has been confirmed.

"Operations against key enemy military targets are ongoing," the General Staff stated.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on the night of September 17, the Security Service of Ukraine conducted a special operation at the Rostov-Central military airfield in Rostov-on-Don, during which it successfully struck a number of russian air targets.

Long-range drones from the SSU’s “Alpha” Special Operations Center struck an An-12 military transport aircraft, two An-26 military transport aircraft, and three helicopters.

U.S. Makes, Israel Takes: The Real Story of U.S.-Israeli Military Cooperation

The Iron Beam laser and Arrow anti-ballistic missile systems are touted as examples of Israeli military ingenuity. But they were largely developed and financed by the U.S.

When Israel deployed its Iron Beam laser weapon for the first time last December, the announcement by leading Israeli defense firms Rafael and Elbit Systems was met with fawning coverage worldwide. The futuristic laser system, designed to shoot drones and rockets out of the sky, was celebrated as a demonstration of the Israeli weapons industry’s technological sophistication.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense described Iron Beam as “Israel’s first domestically developed laser interception system,” while touting the country as a pioneer in missile defense. The Arrow anti-ballistic missile system, another key example of Israel’s purportedly homegrown ingenuity, was heavily employed to defend from Iranian missile attacks during two recent wars.

That alleged ingenuity is at the center of a debate roiling Washington this month as Congress returns to debates about whether to create a new office in the Pentagon to coordinate U.S. and Israeli military research, testing, and industrial production, giving institutional architecture to a relationship that is already deeply intertwined on a de facto basis. The legislation, known as Section 219, was included in the House-passed National Defense Authorization Act, but remains contested in the Senate. Backers of the bill argue that tighter coordination with Israel should not be seen as a giveaway or cost to the United States, but rather is a boon to U.S. military capacity because the U.S. benefits more from the partnership than Israel. Arrow and Iron Beam are routinely held up as case studies of such innovation.

But the real story of how these weapons were developed is quite different. In fact, both weapons systems were developed and financed by the United States before being handed off to Israel by acts of Congress, according to government documents and interviews with key personnel involved in their development—despite warnings from U.S. intelligence agencies that transferring the tech to Israel effectively hands it over to U.S. adversaries such as China and Russia.

The pattern has long been cause for concern inside the intelligence community and among some in the Pentagon, but the mandates have come directly from Congress.

David Pyne, who worked as a civilian in the Pentagon office that oversaw development of the Arrow 2 program in the early 2000s, said it still bothered him that the American military put in so much work, and American taxpayers footed the bill, yet the U.S. couldn’t even fully benefit from the system. “They didn’t contribute a dime into the program, but the thing that pissed me off at the time, and obviously since, is that they would not share the final product,” said Pyne in relation to Israeli participation in the program.

Israel did spend money on the program, which is typically described as being split roughly down the middle by the U.S. and Israel. The U.S. directly contributed more than $4 billion, while Israel’s portion was paid for largely with U.S.-supplied foreign military financing.

That left Pyne frustrated at the amount of control Israel retained over the technology. “They wouldn’t allow us to use the technology we co-developed with them at 100% U.S. taxpayer expense,” Pyne said.

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) became the primary contractor producing Arrow 2, though the U.S. maintained a veto over who it could be sold to, which it exercised at one point in the case of India. In 2002, Boeing cut a deal with IAI to make component parts for it, and the U.S. has ultimately been able to exploit some of the technology.

Here in the United States, the average price of diesel reached six dollars a gallon for the very first time last week, and a lot of Americans are grumbling about that.

But in other parts of the world, people are absolutely livid.

In Syria, the government has raised the price of diesel by about 40 percent and the price of gasoline by about 25 percent.

This has sparked a series of wild protests all over the country.

Qatar signed an agreement with the United Nations to deliver about 1.3 million liters of fuel to the Gaza Strip, the Qatari Foreign Ministry announced Thursday.

According to the announcement, the fuel will be transferred as a grant on behalf of Doha to support humanitarian needs and the health system in Gaza.

The Foreign Ministry of Qatar said the grant is intended to enable the continuation of essential services and humanitarian operations. Qatar also aims to help entities operating on the ground provide services to Gazans.

Iraq lifts restrictions on civilian use of its western airspace

Iraq said on Friday it had returned restricted airspace in the western part of the country to civilian authorities, ending limits in place for military operations since 2016, the transport ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said it had handed over all previously reserved zones stretching across western Iraq from north to south to the authority responsible for airports and air navigation for use by civil aviation.

The move is expected to give Iraqi aviation authorities more room to redesign flight routes, ease restrictions on aircraft movement and improve the efficiency of airspace use.

The restricted areas had been designated for military operations against Islamic State group in 2016 and 2017, when large parts of Iraq's western desert were used as bases for those operations.

Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi terrorists have stepped up attacks on Saudi cities and energy infrastructure while advancing along Yemen's Red Sea coast towards the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a key shipping route. Responding to the Houthi offensive, the Saudi and Yemeni air forces have bombarded Houthi targets.

Nearly 3,000 people have crossed the Gulf of Aden to Djibouti in the Horn of Africa in less than a week as escalating violence has forced more families to flee, Sandrine Desamours, the representative for the UN’s refugee agency, UNHCR, told reporters in Geneva via video link from Djibouti.

Hegseth tours technology bringing unmanned boats to war

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is heading to Texas Friday, where one of his stops will put a spotlight on technology that is changing how the United States fights at sea.

As part of his “Arsenal of Freedom Tour,” Hegseth is scheduled to visit Austin-based Saronic Technologies, a defense technology company that develops autonomous surface vessels. He is also scheduled to visit Capital Factory and meet with technology and defense industry leaders.

The Saronic visit is particularly notable, as the company’s boats have already been used in U.S. military combat.

In July, U.S. Central Command said three Corsair unmanned boats struck a submarine and ship-maintenance facility at Iran’s Bandar Abbas Naval Base. CENTCOM described it as the first time American forces used sea drones in combat operations.

That means Hegseth’s visit comes as autonomous systems are moving beyond the testing phase and onto the battlefield.

The technology offers the military another way to conduct operations at sea without putting American sailors aboard every vessel. The Pentagon has increasingly emphasized getting new technology into the hands of warfighters faster, and Hegseth’s tour is focused on that effort.

After his Austin stops, Hegseth is scheduled to travel to College Station, where he will address the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets and tour the university’s Veterans Resource Center. He is also expected to welcome new recruits and administer the oath of enlistment.

His Texas trip therefore puts two Pentagon priorities on display: developing new military technology and building the force needed to use it.

And with autonomous boats already being used in combat, the technology Hegseth is visiting in Austin is no longer simply a future concept — it is becoming part of how the U.S. conducts warfare at sea.

The Trump Administration Sends a New Signal to Alien Disclosure Whistleblowers

Just over a year ago, Dylan Borland—a former Air Force geospatial intelligence specialist—told a House Oversight task force that he'd watched a roughly 100-foot triangular craft lift silently off the flight line at Langley Air Force Base in 2012.

But there were some questions he couldn’t answer.

Nearly half a dozen times during the hearing, he told members of Congress he could only answer their questions, such as whether a private company he worked for was reverse engineering nonhuman technology, inside a Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility, or SCIF.

He said he was concerned whether he was “legally even allowed to answer” some questions and at one point cited a fear of being charged under the Espionage Act.

A year later, on September 14, the Defense Department announced it had lowered that risk, though it falls short of what some in the unidentified anomalous phenomena research community say is needed to achieve broad transparency.

The Pentagon said on Monday that it had issued a "targeted legal waiver" allowing all current and former “service members, civilian personnel, and contractors" holding UAP-related national defense information to disclose it to the White House–directed effort that has been dumping UFO files on war.gov since May.

The waiver, which hasn’t been made public, "supersedes civil and administrative enforcement provisions" of NDAs and special access program agreements, "strictly for communications directed to the PURSUE team," a reference to the White House program.

Basically, if you signed a secrecy agreement and know something about UFOs, you can now tell PURSUE without being sued or losing your clearance, though the same protections don’t extend to speaking with Congress, the press, or the public.

The release announcing the waiver says nothing about criminal law, and only covers agreements "previously executed within the United States."

President Donald Trump telegraphed the move over the summer when he reportedly directed the Defense Department and the intelligence community to waive UAP-related NDAs.

It was reinforced on July 31 when Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence Aaron Lukas sent a memo to 18 intelligence chiefs declaring that any NDAs “prohibiting disclosure to the President, or designees like PURSUE, are no longer in force.”

The memo cited a “Presidential Direction” it never quotes and gave the intelligence community 30 days to set up its own procedures. That deadline passed in August. The White House directed a request for comment to the Defense Department.

An agency spokesperson said it had no additional comment outside the press release and referred further questions to the White House.

Borland, the kind of person all of this was written for, is unmoved.

“Bad-faith actors are talking about, ‘Oh, this allows whistleblowers to go and talk to the public.’ No, it doesn't. It changes nothing,” he tells WIRED. “It's one more place to go.

“Those of us who already became whistleblowers, we already were told that our NDAs were waived. We were legally allowed to talk to AARO,” he says, referring to the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, created in 2022 to investigate UAP reports and serve as the official channel for whistleblowers. He adds that the new directive essentially “just repeated what we've been told for three, four years.”

A provision Congress passed in December 2022 already states that an authorized UAP disclosure—meaning one made through AARO—"shall not be subject to a nondisclosure agreement," complies with classification rules, and "is not a violation" of the relevant section of the Espionage Act. The channel was AARO and Borland used it.

Appeals Court Grants Immunity to Texas Cops Who Held Handcuffed Woman Face Down in a Fire Ant Hill

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Taylor Rogers didn't show that it was clearly established that it was excessive force to be held down on a pile of fire ants while handcuffed.

Qualified immunity was created by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1967 case Pierson v. Ray. In Pierson v. Ray, police arrested black and white clergy members who tried to use a segregated bus station waiting room in Mississippi. After the segregation law was struck down as unconstitutional, the clergy sued the officers. The Supreme Court ruled that police officers should not face financial liability if they acted in good faith and with probable cause under a law they believed was valid at the time.

The court updated the standard in 1982 (Harlow v. Fitzgerald) to focus on whether an official violated "clearly established law,".

The court claims unless there is a similar case under similar circumstances where an officer was found to have violated rights by performing the same action, then it was not "clearly established" and an officer could not be expected to "reasonably know" it was unlawful. In other words, ignorance of the law is an excuse for law enforcement, but not the people.

When a plaintiff sues a state or local official (such as a police officer) under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 for violating a right, the official is often granted qualified immunity to stop the lawsuit early in direct violation of the plaintiffs 7th amendment right to a jury trial in a federal civil case exceeding $20.

Qualified immunity is literally conspiracy against rights and violation of rights under color of law. It is an abomination that should never exist in a free nation. The courts were not only never granted that authority, they were explicitly FORBIDDEN that authority by the US Constitution.
