The "Happily Ever Faster" mission sent a private Earth-observation satellite to orbit, but Rocket Lab is mum on the details.

Rocket Lab just launched a mystery mission to orbit.

An Electron rocket lifted off from Rocket Lab's New Zealand site on Thursday (Sept. 10) at 11:28 p.m. EDT (0328 GMT and 3:28 p.m. local New Zealand time on Sept. 11).

The launched kicked off a mission the company called "Happily Ever Faster," which we know little about.

Rocket Lab did not livestream the mission or reveal who booked it, saying only that it aimed to loft "a single commercial satellite to a 500 km low Earth orbit." That did indeed happen successfully, the company announced via X about 80 minutes after launch.

Speculation has worked to fill the information vacuum, as it generally does. For example, some outside observers think "Happily Ever Faster" carried up a "Gen-3" satellite for the geospatial intelligence company BlackSky.

These spacecraft are powerful Earth observers, capable of resolving features as small as 14 inches (35 centimeters) on our planet's surface.

Rocket Lab has launched BlackSky Gen-3 satellites before, so this is a pretty good bet — especially since, in that post-launch X post, the company revealed that the deployed payload was an Earth-observing craft.

"Happily Ever Faster" was Rocket Lab's 16th launch of 2026, and the 13th involving the 59-foot-tall (18 meters) Electron, which gives small satellites dedicated rides to space.

The company has also launched three missions this year with HASTE, a suborbital version of Electron that tests customer equipment in a hypersonic flight environment. All 16 launches in 2026 have been successful.

Pursuing “space superiority” and critical supply chain risk mitigation, the DOE is providing grants seven to eleven research projects to advance space solar cell technologies, from III-V cells to standard terrestrial silicon and perovskites.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Integrated Energy Systems Office (IESO) and Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation are seeking innovative techniques to move space based solar power forward.

The groups are launching a $12 million funding opportunity open to research laboratories and companies around the country.

Space based solar has gotten a lot of attention lately. Some propose to power data centers in space, while others seek to beam the energy to Earth.

Companies able to compete where “cost per watt is not the binding constraint,” but “mass, radiation tolerance, and durability are,” are specifically sought.

An IESO representative said space photovoltaics (PV) is “one of the few solar energy segments where the U.S. has never given up its technology lead,” since the U.S. launched the world’s first solar powered satellite, Vanguard 1, in March 1958.

The opportunity also marks the program as part of the nation’s critical mineral push.

The document notes that space solar cell manufacturing is inefficient in its use of key resources, such as gallium and germanium, which each have under 1 kt of annual global production.

China banned the export of both to the U.S. in December 2024. The currently suspended ban resumes November 27, 2026, seven weeks after this solicitation closes.

The program, the Space Photovoltaics (PV) Research and Development Partnership Intermediary Agreement (PIA) opportunity, will fund seven to eleven awards in total, across two separate tracks of topic areas:

Next-generation Cell Innovation (Topic 1): Projects will focus on the advancement of high-performance, low-cost, and durable space-grade PV cells in the lab environment. DOE anticipates $8 million for this track, spread across five to nine awards.

Rapid Production and Demonstration (Topic 2): Projects will focus on advancing innovative, high-volume manufacturing processes and demonstrating third party-validated performance of module prototypes in space or near-space environments. DOE anticipates $4 million here, across two to three awards.

The DOE says Topic 1 research is eligible for up to $1.5 million in funding, while topic 2 can gain up to $2 million. The program will cover up to three years of funding. Applications are due 11:59 p.m. ET on October 8, 2026.

An informational webinar is scheduled for 1 p.m. on September 15, with office hours on September 29 and October 6. DOE expects to name selections in December 2026.

The opportunity notes a “special interest” in standard space solar cells (type III-V), as well mainstream terrestrial solar cell types. Each product class also has unique technological requests:

III-V PV – substrate reuse techniques that still deliver at least 27% cell efficiency with greater than 95% yield after five wafer reuses

crystalline silicon (c-Si) PV -radiation hardened cells that retain at least 80% of beginning of life peak power across missions longer than 10 years or in high radiation orbits, alongside thin wafer cells reaching 23% efficiency at air mass zero

emerging perovskite PV -prioritizing tandem and multijunction designs above 30% efficiency that can survive thermal cycling, ultraviolet exposure, atomic oxygen, and humid storage

These three technologies are the current focus of space based solar cells.

The press release notes it is seeking those working on “advanced, space-applicable PV technologies or specializing in PV characterization and stress testing.”

The DOE is also looking for “industry teams advancing near-commercial, pilot-scale space PV solutions with testing partnerships and the capability to fly PV prototypes or panels in space.”

Regarding III-V type solar technologies, the DOE notes that while these perform reliably, and have shown the ability to last 15 or more years in space, they remain expensive at over 100 times the cost of terrestrial technology.

The solicitation calls the manufacturing process “time-consuming, difficult to automate,” with “low material utilization rates of critical minerals, which all drive high costs.”

Thus, faster manufacturing processes could expand the supply chain, lowering costs overall through scale.

The DOE notes that the program aligns with the administration’s “Space Superiority” goal.

US Space Command Should Always Be Led by a Guardian

General Stephen Whiting took command of U.S. Space Command in January 2024, and if customary three-year tenures hold, his tour would end in January 2027. The question now before the President and Senate is who should follow him?

The reason is operational, not parochial: Guardians are the military professionals best prepared to integrate spacepower into global, multi-domain operations, and the Space Force exists to generate the nation’s combat-ready space forces.

Space is no longer an uncontested domain, merely enabling others; it is a warfighting domain and capable of delivering decisive effects. U.S. Space Command’s job is to secure space superiority to preserve access to space capabilities, and plan, execute, and integrate military spacepower into multi-domain global operations. Its commander therefore must be more than familiar with space-enabled capabilities. The position demands mastery of orbital warfare, space domain awareness, command and control, electromagnetic and cyber dependencies, counterspace threats, and the integration of space effects across every geographic combatant command. Guardians are the only service members who train from accession through senior command around that full mission set.

By law, the Space Force must provide freedom of operation for the United States in, from, and to space; conduct space operations; and protect U.S. interests in space.

That statutory responsibility matters. Other services have space expertise to support their missions, but Congress made the Space Force uniquely responsible to organize, train, and equip forces for prompt and sustained space operations.

A Guardian commanding U.S. Space Command brings both the depth to fight for space superiority and the breadth to lead Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and allied forces as a joint team.

Jointness is not achieved by rotating a command among services for the sake of balance; it is achieved by selecting the officer best prepared to accomplish the assigned mission.

When U.S. Space Command was re-established in August 2019, President Trump selected General John “Jay” Raymond, soon to be the first Space Force Guardian, as the commander.

But this was a temporary one-year arrangement, as Gen. Raymond was also named the first Chief of Space Operations after the Space Force was created four months later.

President Trump selected Army General James Dickinson to lead U.S. Space Command from August 2020 to January 2024. When Gen. Dickinson assumed command, the Space Force was still in its first year.

No pool of seasoned Guardians existed to compete for the position.

Whoever they choose, it has to be a Guardian—and so should every successor thereafter.

That’s no longer the case. In 2023, President Biden nominated and the Senate confirmed Gen. Whiting for the position.

Since then, the Space Force has continued to develop Guardian leaders with the critical operational experience, expertise, and an unparalleled understanding of space as a warfighting domain.

Gen. Dickinson’s selection was a sound transitional exception, not a precedent for an enduring Army-Space Force rotation.

The deployment of troops from European NATO countries to Ukraine would mean a direct war with Russia, President Vladimir Putin warned, arguing that political shifts across the EU reflect growing public discontent with the policies of the Western “globalist elites.”

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Friday, Putin said Europe’s current political and economic troubles are the result of “systemic mistakes” made by its leaders in foreign policy, security, and economics after the end of the Cold War.

The globalist elites, Putin said, have convinced themselves that they are “at the top of Olympus” and effectively incapable of being wrong, but their mistakes have since accumulated “like a snowball.”

In the sphere of security, Putin pointed to NATO’s eastward expansion and Western efforts to bring Ukraine into the US-led military bloc, which Moscow considers a root cause of the conflict.

Western governments are now frightening their populations with an imaginary ‘Russian threat’ while pushing Europe closer to a direct confrontation, he argued.

“We are not threatening and are not going to threaten European countries. Why would we?” Putin said.

He warned, however, that plans floated by a number of European NATO members to deploy forces to Ukraine could cross that line.

“They are now talking about how they are considering sending troops into Ukrainian territory. This means war with Russia.”

Moscow has warned that it will not accept troops from NATO countries being stationed in Ukraine under the guise of security guarantees or a peacekeeping mission.

Russian officials have argued that Kiev and its European backers are seeking a pause in the fighting rather than a lasting settlement in order to allow Ukrainian forces to rearm and regroup before the hostilities resume.

Putin argued that European voters increasingly recognize where these policies could lead.

“I understand that the citizens of European countries understand what is happening,” he said, suggesting that this is reflected in political trends across the continent, such as the recent landslide victory by the Alternative for Germany party (AfD) in Saxony-Anhalt’s regional election.

Putin declined to comment directly on German domestic politics, but said the results and broader political trends in Europe appear to be rooted in growing dissatisfaction with the direction taken by the continent’s current leadership.

The juror — who was the sole holdout after the panel split 11-1 on whether to find Clancy not guilty due to mental disease or defect — was the subject of a controversial NBC10 Boston report that detailed the unidentified man’s alleged history of domestic violence.

DeSantis said the report was an attempt at damaging the reputation of the man, who has not identified himself but who others on the jury said is black and in his 30s.

Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasizes need for 'millions' of drones, with armed forces having about 2,000 drones in inventory

HAMILTON, Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a declaration Thursday for a 100-year partnership.

Carney said at a news conference in Calgary after a signing ceremony that the agreement looks beyond the war in Ukraine toward long-term cooperation.

"President Zelensky and I have just signed a declaration for 100-year partnership," he said, adding that in the coming months the two countries would “codify a long-term framework for cooperation across defense and security, trade and investment, reconstruction, energy, critical minerals and technology.”

Noting Calgary's ties to Ukraine, Carney said more than 350,000 Canadians of Ukrainian descent live in Alberta, including 70,000 in Calgary. He pointed to the city's innovative companies and institutions such as the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.

Describing the war as being at a turning point, Carney said Ukraine is now “neutralizing aerial threats from more than 600 kilometers (373 miles) away, while Russia relies on authoritarian regimes to refuel its war machine.”

He said drones would be central to Canada's defense rearmament, the largest in 70 years, as it works to “build Canada strong, Canada safe, Canada secure.”

Saying that Canada's armed forces currently hold roughly 2,000 drones, he said, "In the years to come, we will need millions," and noted the government launched the Defense Drone Initiative earlier this year to expand domestic manufacturing for the Canadian Armed Forces and Canadian Coast Guard.

He also announced a national drone marketplace that connects military units directly with nearly 400 Canadian suppliers, as part of a plan to build the capacity to produce millions of drones within two years. "Today's contracts will increase the number of drones available to the cap tenfold," he said.

Carney said Canada and Ukraine also finalized a deal to deliver air defense interceptors through the US Jumpstart mechanism, a "$350 million equipment package" aimed at protecting Ukraine.

Carney's drone marketplace announcement formally creates the Defence Drone Initiative Marketplace Supply Arrangement, a national digital platform modeled on Ukraine's Brave1 system meant to speed up the discovery, purchase and fielding of uncrewed and counter-drone technology for the Canadian Armed Forces and Coast Guard, according to a statement by his office.

Drone attacks struck industrial and military facilities in the Russian cities of Taganrog and Tolyatti overnight on September 12, with fires reported near an aircraft complex that services A-50 surveillance planes and Tu-95 strategic bombers, as well as at one of Russia’s major chemical producers.

According to Exilenova+ on September 12, satellite fire-detection data and footage shared by local residents showed several fires in Taganrog, including near the Beriev Taganrog Aviation Scientific and Technical Complex.

The facility specializes in maintenance and modernization of Russia’s A-50 airborne early warning and control aircraft, Be-series amphibious aircraft used by the Russian Navy, and Tu-95MS/MSM strategic bombers.

Russia uses Tu-95 bombers to launch Kh-101 air-launched cruise missiles against Ukraine.

NASA FIRMS satellite data showed fire hotspots in the area of the aviation enterprise. The nearby Taganrog-Yuzhny airfield serves as the Beriev complex’s main flight-testing base.

Separately, ASTRA reported that drones may also have targeted the Taganrog-Central military airfield, home to Russia’s 708th Military Transport Aviation Regiment. The 325th Aircraft Repair Plant, which repairs military transport aircraft, is located nearby.

Another fire was recorded near Taganrog’s automobile plant, according to satellite observations and reports from local residents.

In Tolyatti, Samara region, drones targeted the KuibyshevAzot chemical plant, according to monitoring group Exilenova+. A fire was reported on the plant’s premises following the attack.

KuibyshevAzot produces ammonia, ammonium nitrate, urea, ammonium sulfate, nitric acid, caprolactam, and polyamide products.

The company is among Russia’s major producers of nitrogen fertilizers and caprolactam, a chemical used in the production of polyamide plastics and synthetic fibers.

Earlier, on September 11, Ukraine’s Defense Forces struck the sanctioned Volgogradpromproekt enterprise in Volgograd with FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles, triggering a fire at the facility.

The company is involved in Russia’s military-industrial complex and produces ferrocene-based combustion catalysts and chemical production technologies.

That is the documented record of the man who ran the NYPD on the day America was attacked—a record that includes a $250,000 “unconditional loan” from Eitan Wertheimer, a board member of the Jewish Agency, the organization that surfaced in FBI files as the employer of Paul Kurzberg, one of the “Dancing Israelis” arrested for celebrating the collapse of the Twin Towers.

The Israel Trip

In late August 2001, just two weeks before hijackers would commandeer four commercial airliners and bring down the Twin Towers, Bernard Kerik traveled to Israel. But for researchers who have combed through the 9/11 Commission files and subsequent investigations, the proximity of Kerik’s travel to the attacks—and the company he kept while there—has never been fully explained.

The Money He Didn’t Declare

Two financial arrangements from that period have since been confirmed through court documents and journalistic investigation, both of which Kerik failed to disclose on his official financial statements.

First: In 2001, Israeli billionaire Eitan Wertheimer extended Kerik a $250,000 “unconditional loan.” The funds were ostensibly for a business venture, but the terms were remarkably generous—no collateral, no repayment schedule, and no apparent expectation of return. Kerik later claimed the money was a loan, but failed to report it as income or as a gift, a violation of New York City’s financial disclosure rules.

Second: In October 2001—just one month after the attacks—Kerik began receiving $236,000 in rent payments for two years, paid by none other than Steve Witkoff. Witkoff, a real estate developer and close associate of Donald Trump, covered Kerik’s housing costs at a time when Kerik was a public servant. Like the Wertheimer loan, this arrangement went undeclared.

Who is Eitan Wertheimer? At the time, he was one of Israel’s wealthiest industrialists, heir to the Iscar metalworking fortune. He was also a member of the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency, an organization with a long and complicated relationship with U.S. intelligence files.

The Jewish Agency Connection

The Jewish Agency for Israel is a century-old institution responsible for facilitating Jewish immigration to Israel. It is, on its face, a charitable and administrative body. But FBI files declassified over the years have placed at least one notable figure within its orbit: Paul Kurzberg.

Kurzberg was one of the so-called “Dancing Israelis”—five men arrested on September 11, 2001, after witnesses in New Jersey reported seeing them cheering and celebrating as the towers collapsed. The men were employees of Urban Moving Systems, a New Jersey-based moving company that the FBI later concluded was “at least in part” a cover for Israeli intelligence operations. Kurzberg’s name appeared in FBI files in connection with the Jewish Agency.

ANNISTON, Ala.— 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne) brought together 15 Teams from across the Special Forces Groups, the 75th Ranger Regiment and the 101st Division at Fort McClellan and Clarke Range Complex, Aug. 24-28, for its inaugural Best Drone Team Competition, a five-day event designed to assess and strengthen unmanned systems proficiency across the formation.

The competition tested how teams employed small, unmanned aircraft systems in support of tactical tasks in both rural and urban environments.

The event focused on more than flight operations, requiring competitors to analyze problems, adjust to changing conditions and apply available technology to mission requirements.

1st Special Forces Group (Airborne)may have earned first-place honors at the conclusion of the event, but the broader purpose was to improve readiness across 1st Special Forces Command by identifying effective practices, exposing capability gaps and informing future training.

“This event was built to measure how teams apply unmanned systems in a tactical context, not simply how well they operate the equipment,” said Chief Warrant Officer 4 Phil Schleicher, G3-Aviation/UAS & Robotics Ops Warrant for the Special Operations Robotics Detachment (SORD), 1 SFC.

“We wanted to evaluate judgment, adaptability and how these systems support mission accomplishment.”

The event brought together Special Forces teams, robotics-focused personnel and key staff representatives from across the command, creating an opportunity to compare approaches and exchange tactics, techniques and procedures.

The competition reflects a broader command emphasis on adapting to rapidly changing technology and ensuring units can incorporate emerging capabilities into training and operations.

As unmanned systems continue to evolve, commanders must balance experimentation, resourcing and skill development to ensure formations remain effective in complex environments.

“The operational value of these systems depends on how well soldiers understand their capabilities and integrate them into a larger tactical problem,” said 20th Special Forces Group’s SORD Competition Coordinator. “The system itself is only one part of the equation.”

Observations from the competition will help shape future training across the force, including efforts to capture best practices, develop instructional materials and examine ways to raise baseline proficiency in tactical unmanned systems employment.

The competition provided leaders an opportunity to observe how teams are solving similar operational challenges with different methods and equipment. Those insights, can help inform follow-on training and guide future capability development discussions across the command.

“Our objective is to take what was learned this week and make it accessible across the 1 SFC formation,” said Brig. Gen. Joseph Wortham, Commanding General of 1 SFC. “Success is not just about recognizing the top team. It is about improving the overall force.”

As the command continues to refine how it prepares Soldiers to operate in a changing technological environment, the inaugural Best Drone Team Competition marked an early step in building a more capable, adaptive and informed force.

President Donald Trump traveled to Ireland this weekend after attending the RNC Midterm Convention in Dallas this week and speaking at the Pentagon 9-11 Memorial on Friday.

During his trip to Ireland, Trump met with Irish President Catherine Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin early Saturday and said he would love to see Northern Ireland unify with Ireland.

Northern Ireland has been under British rule for over 100 years.

Trump said, “I’d like to see a unified country. I think it would be a great feather in everybody’s cap if that happened. It’s going to happen eventually.”

The US President then traveled to Trump International Golf Club Doonbeg for the Irish Open.

Club members chanted, “USA! USA!” as President Trump walked through the bar and shook hands.

This sight was worth getting out of bed early. Just over four years ago, Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) rose before dawn to the delight of northern sky enthusiasts awake that early. Up before sunrise on July 8th, the featured photographer was able to capture in dramatic fashion one of the few comets visible to the unaided eye this century, an inner-Solar System intruder that has become known as the Great Comet of 2020. The resulting video detailed Comet NEOWISE from Italy rising over the Adriatic Sea. The featured time-lapse video combines over 240 images taken over 30 minutes. The comet was seen rising through a foreground of bright and undulating noctilucent clouds, and before a background of distant stars. Comet NEOWISE remained unexpectedly bright for over a month, with its ion and dust tails found to emanate from a nucleus spanning about five kilometers across.

This is the FIRST time on record in the satellite era (since 1966) that we have made it to September 12th without at least one Atlantic hurricane yet in the calendar year.

This is also the first time since at least 1941 that this has happened. Year-to-date ACE is lowest since 1941 as well. If we get through September 21st without any hurricane formations, it will be the first time since 1914 (there were none that season).

Train carrying Boris Johnson and other dignitaries 'is evacuated in Ukraine after Russian drone strike hits passenger service behind'

Boris Johnson was aboard a private train that was given an evacuation warning after a nearby locomotive was hit by a Russian drone attack.

The former British prime minister was travelling back towards Poland after attending a major security conference in Kyiv when the train stopped at around 5am amid a drone alert.

Mr Johnson is understood to have escaped unharmed, with an all-clear given shortly afterwards when no further drones were detected.

Former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt, who was also on board, said passengers on the train received an evacuation warning.

But it is not clear if anyone had to leave the train before it then escaped across the border to NATO territory in Poland.

He revealed that it was the train immediately behind them that was hit by the Russian drone.

'This wasn't our train [that was hit], but the one just minutes after us by the [Polish] border crossing,' said Bildt.

'It was evacuated as the [Russian] drone approached and no one was hurt.'

The incident came after another train travelling on the Kyiv-Warsaw route was struck by a Russian drone near the Polish border.

The locomotive was hit but, according to Ukrainian railway authorities, nobody was injured. The train was carrying 206 people, who were seen running in fear after the attack.

Boris Johnson has exclusively shared pictures of the drone strike with the Daily Mail.

It was also carrying Günter Sautter, one of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's closest foreign and security-policy advisers, as well as security advisers from Britain, France and Italy, German MPs, diplomats and academics.

Mr Johnson and the other officials had been in Kyiv for the 2026 annual meeting of the Yalta European Strategy, an international security conference where Western officials held discussions with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's government about possible peace negotiations with Russia.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said a Russian drone had also struck the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing, one of the country's most important links with the European Union.

Footage circulating on social media appeared to show trucks on fire at the crossing, while Ukrainian media reported that a petrol station had also been hit. There were no immediate reports of casualties and the Polish military confirmed the attack.

The attack came just two kilometres from the Polish border, according to Ukrainian railway officials, raising concerns about Russian strikes reaching increasingly close to NATO territory.

Russian drones have increasingly targeted Ukrainian rail infrastructure, with Ukrainian Railways accusing Moscow of carrying out systematic attacks on the network.

Back at it again with a long one, but can't help myself on the Space Academy topic.

Interesting to read some of the policy experts who have taken skeptical, and in some cases negative, public positions on the need for a United States Space Academy. People are certainly entitled to their opinions.

There are also those who believe we should not build a single spaceship or invest in technological progress until we solve every problem on Earth. That is simply not how you build a better future for our children.

I suspect, for some, the objection has more to do with the politics than the merits. So let me address a few of the common concerns and offer some rationale.

Global dependence on space is increasing at an astronomical rate. Weather forecasting, disaster response, precision navigation, communications, agriculture, national security and scientific discovery all depend on capabilities in orbit.

Connecting the disconnected and expanding access to knowledge is itself foundational to solving many of the world's problems. The data we will be taking in, whether from Earth observation or instruments like Roman, will answer questions we do not even know to ask today.

And there is no going back from the trajectory we are on. A decade ago, the FAA was overseeing barely more than a dozen commercial space launches per year.

Today, nearly a dozen U.S. companies are operating or developing orbital launch systems, chasing economic opportunity measured in the trillions. But the upside is far greater than economics.

Think about what we stand to learn scientifically, what technologies will have to be pioneered to explore out there, and how many of those breakthroughs will make life better back here.

Our new national space transportation policy calls for the United States to support more than 1,000 launches annually by 2030. Some already believe that is off by an order of magnitude.

America will certainly establish a permanent outpost on another world in the years ahead, and we are not alone in our ambitions. That outpost will become NASA's proving ground for where we go next. Mars.

And then we continue on. It is our destiny to harness more of the energy of our star, unlock more of the energy potential in matter, and venture farther outward, in the same spirit as the explorers of centuries past who discovered the New World.

And we have no idea how quickly that timeline could accelerate in a world transformed by artificial superintelligence, robotics, quantum technologies and additive manufacturing.

All of it is unfolding in the context of a great power competition where falling behind could materially affect our way of life and the trajectory of civilizations.

Moscow and Kiev remain divided over territory despite progress on security and ceasefire mechanisms, Jared Kushner has said

The territorial dispute between Moscow and Kiev remains the main obstacle to ending the Ukraine conflict, Jared Kushner, US special envoy and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, has said.

His comments came after he and fellow envoy Steve Witkoff traveled to Moscow and Kiev for high-level talks on ending hostilities.

Speaking via video link at the annual YES 2026 conference in Kiev on Friday, Kushner said that Moscow “wants to discuss a way to resolve” the conflict, but “the hardest issue is still territory,” partly because the question is to a degree dictated by a battlefield situation that remains highly dynamic.

“Seeing the advancement in the technology and the way that the battlefield has happened is, I think, beyond the expectation of both sides.

And I think one thing I’ve learned in politics is [that] any expert you talk to will give you a ton of ideas, but nobody has any idea what’s actually going to happen,” Kushner said.

Despite this hurdle, Kushner still sounded optimistic about the overall progress.

During earlier trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi, he said, US, Russian and Ukrainian representatives “completed a deconfliction mechanism and a monitoring mechanism,” with the US military involved in the discussions.

Once the territorial question is resolved, Kushner said, that framework could provide “a real mechanism both to enforce it, protect it and oversee it.”

He stressed that much of the rest of a potential deal could fall into place if Moscow and Kiev overcome the territorial dispute. “I think the sides feel good about” the arrangement, he added. “And that’s actually real progress in that regard.”

Kushner and Witkoff travelled to Moscow earlier this month, where they held more than three hours of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin before heading to Kiev.

Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov described the Moscow meeting as “substantive, constructive and extremely candid,” saying Putin stressed Russia’s battlefield gains and the need to address the conflict’s root causes.

Following the talks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow hopes trilateral negotiations with Washington and Kiev can resume in the “foreseeable future,” with Ushakov naming Abu Dhabi as Russia’s preferred venue.

Moscow has long insisted that a sustainable settlement is possible only if Kiev recognizes the “new territorial realities,” as well as commits to neutrality, demilitarization and denazification.

As Russian forces are making progress on the battlefield, Kiev still clings to less than 15% of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

The First Denisovan Forearm Bone Ever Discovered Fills a Key Knowledge Gap in Our Understanding of This Archaic Hominin

The first Denisovan radius ever discovered is offering scientists a rare new glimpse into one of humanity’s most mysterious ancient relatives, whose scarce fossil remains have left much of their story unknown.

In a recent paper published in Nature, the team described these unique remains, discovered in the Bianfu Cave in Southwest China, an important Paleolithic site.

While Denisovans have been discovered throughout Asia, this part of China has been a major gap in the record.

Therefore, this site provides important information about what a complete Denisovan body would have been like, as well as intricate details about regional skull variations among these archaic hominins.

A New Technique

The researchers behind the new study developed a novel technique to make the most of the more than 60,000 bone fragments recovered from Bianfu Cave.

While Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) has become an important tool in working with hominin fossils, using it on a find of this scale would be inefficient and expensive.

Therefore, the team developed a morphological pre-screening and ZooMS identification technique, which greatly increased their efficiency in recovering hominin fragments from the site and could be applied to other Paleolithic sites in the future.

A total of 22 likely hominin bone fragments were identified in the pre-screening process, from which two parietal bone fragments and one proximal radial fragment were confirmed by ZooMS as belonging to hominins.

Denisovan Remains Uncovered

Two of these hominin remains were excavated from the same layer, dated between 148,000 and 143,000 years old, which also held four hominin teeth.

The research team further examined two of those teeth, and a detailed analysis indicated they belonged to males. The third specimen was even older, from a layer dated between 167,000 and 150,00 years old.

By screening the fragments for amino acids, the team identified a variant of COL1A2 R996K unique to Denisovans as present, confirming the species identity of the remains.

Other intriguing amino acids in the fragments included one shared by Denisovans, Neanderthals, and modern humans, as well as one that marks them as distinct from Homo erectus, which also occupied East Asia.

As the team closely examined the morphology of skulls excavated from Bianfu Cave, they identified a cranial thickness pattern remarkably similar to H. heidelbergensis and East Asian late Middle Pleistocene archaic Homo.

A New Understanding of Denisovans

After analyzing the morphology of the first Denisovan radius ever discovered, the researchers suggest it was likely oriented similarly to a Neanderthal’s, but with a shape and cross-sectional geometry closer to that found in modern humans.

The importance of the find lies not only in being the first example of its kind, but also in indicating biochemical demands and adaptations distinct from both Neanderthals and modern humans.

Besides Denisova Cave in Siberia, from which Denisovans draw their name, the team believes Bianfu Cave may hold the largest fossil record for the species.

This could provide researchers with crucial new data, over a decade into the quest to understand the Denisovan species of Asia.

Based on the age of the layers in which the remains were found, the team says the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau region, where the cave resides, may have been an ideal homing habitat at the time.

The Earth would have been in a glacial period, during which the area’s relatively warm climate would have aided hominin survival.
