Reports of settler assaults and arson across West Bank on Rosh Hashanah
Man reported beaten in village, as extremists set farmland alight; foreign TV crew assaulted outside illegal outpost
Multiple reports of settler violence in the West Bank surfaced over Rosh Hashanah, with no reported arrests, as lawlessness in the Israeli-controlled territory continued unabated.
In the central West Bank village of Beitillu, Arabic media reported Saturday evening that a 23-year-old Palestinian man was brutally beaten during a settler raid.
The victim was photographed bruised and bloodied in an ambulance as he was evacuated to a nearby hospital.
Additional footage showed settlers armed with clubs walking away from the area after apparently carrying out the attack.
There were no reports of arrests, which are highly rare in cases of settler violence, even though attacks take place on a near-daily basis.
In the northern West Bank, Channel 13 aired footage Sunday it said depicted settler arsonists setting agricultural land alight.

President Donald Trump suggested on Sunday that the United States could stay in Iran and "keep the oil," drawing a parallel with a US push to take control of a fifth of Venezuela's vast oil reserves.
On a trip to Ireland for meetings and to watch golf, he reiterated that he still expected the Iran war to end this year, possibly just after midterm elections due in the United States in November.
Speaking at the Irish Open golf championship, Trump added that the price of gasoline would "drop like a rock" once the Iran war ended.
Turmoil in the Middle East has roiled oil markets, with oil traders expecting prices to rise again on Monday after an attack on a Saudi oil pipeline.
Trump said that he would only make the "right deal" and wouldn't do one that was "no good," adding that Iran was "calling constantly" for peace talks — an assertion that Tehran has dismissed in the past.

But the president also introduced another option: stay engaged with Iran. He drew a parallel with the US deal in Venezuela, announced in August.

From lab experiment to steak: Israeli startup Aleph Farms wins Singapore approval to sell its cultivated beef, bringing lab-grown meat a step closer to restaurant tables and a planned 2027 launch
In 2013, the world’s first lab-grown hamburger was served in London. Made from cattle cells, it cost around €250,000 at the time and was more a proof of concept than a lunch. The idea seemed almost like science fiction: producing real meat without raising and slaughtering an entire animal. A little more than a decade later, one of the companies at the forefront of efforts to turn that idea into a commercial product is Israel’s Aleph Farms, which is attempting something particularly complex: not a burger or a nugget, but a cut of beef resembling a steak.
The Israeli story began at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Prof. Shulamit Levenberg of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering had spent years working in tissue engineering: studying how to make cells grow and organize themselves into three-dimensional tissue, for example to repair muscle or create blood vessels. In 2016, she began conducting experiments growing cattle cells on a plant-based protein scaffold. A year later, The Kitchen, the food-tech incubator of the Strauss Group, entrepreneur Didier Toubia and Dr. Neta Lavon joined the research. From that meeting of tissue engineering and food technology, Aleph Farms was born. Levenberg is a co-founder and the company’s chief scientific adviser, while Toubia serves as CEO.
As early as 2018, Aleph Farms unveiled what it described as the world’s first cultivated beef steak. In 2021, together with the Technion, it also presented a prototype of a thicker cultivated ribeye steak produced using 3D bioprinting. In a 2022 interview with ynet, Toubia explained that the company was not trying to create an exact replica of an existing cut of meat.
“Just as a Tesla is not identical to a gasoline-powered car,” he said at the time, emphasizing that the goal was to create a product with characteristics of its own, aimed first and foremost at people who eat meat.

US embassy child abuse images suspect flown from UK before police interview

A US embassy staffer accused of possessing indecent images of children, was detained at his south London flat and flown out of the UK in August, without being first questioned by British police.
The US Embassy confirmed to the BBC that authorities are investigating the allegations and they have reassigned the staff member to the US while inquiries continue.
"The United States government expects all personnel to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, and we take these allegations seriously," embassy officials said in a statement.
They added that they "quickly informed UK law enforcement and took swift action."
It is understood the individual worked at the US embassy in Vauxhall, south west London, and though not a diplomat, he enjoyed the umbrella of diplomatic protection.
He was flown back to the United States on a commercial flight, but their investigations are ongoing in conjunction with UK authorities.
It is also understood Home Office ministers and the Metropolitan Police are in close contact with the US embassy on this matter as investigations continue.
A UK government spokesperson said: "We expect all foreign diplomats in the UK to abide by our laws, in the same way we expect all UK diplomats to do so when posted overseas."

"Once you are speaker, I would strongly urge that the Democrats put together a framework for a very public conversation." Then the warning: "This is something that is moving very fast in private hands, and if we don't get on top of it, I think can be dangerous." Benefits too - drugs, clean energy - if they do. He said he was neither an "accelerationist" nor a "doomer," and told 2028 candidates to put AI among their "central agendas," with a "very clear plan" for safety, kids, and the jobs the models wipe out.

that we (the United States of America) stop funding Zelensky and that we also make stronger economic and political demands on the EU and NATO as well. Perpetual war only benefits mortuaries and manufacturers.
Stop pretending like you understand global diplomacy or better yet, go in front of Congress and tell us what you and Witkoff are doing. Going on podcasts and Fox News isn’t like being placed under oath.
Lastly, and so far, the “peace deals” you’re involved with are not working. The Middle East is far worse condition and last night alone Russia launched close to 700 drones and missiles (LAST NIGHT!!!).
Stop the funding and you’ll see Marshall Law Zelensky’s tune change overnight.
Smart strength and effective diplomacy with real influence comes with acts of tough love. It’s time for the U.S. to demonstrate tough love.

New footage posted on X shows what appear to be protests, with Israeli news organizations saying the anger is erupting because of skyrocketing fuel costs, reminiscent of the Arab Spring food riots 15 years ago.
i24NEWS reports that demonstrations have popped up in parts of Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor provinces, with protesters blocking roads and stopping oil tankers as rising energy costs intensify affordability pressures.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, security forces affiliated with the Ministry of Interior fired live ammunition while attempting to disperse the demonstrators. Tensions remained high as security personnel sought to reopen the roads and remove protesters from the area.
A separate report from Times of Israel states:
Protests have broken out in different parts of Syria over increased fuel prices, with demonstrators blocking a main highway in Idlib province for several hours.
The government announced what it said were temporary price increases for gasoline, diesel and other petroleum products earlier today, citing rising global fuel prices as a result of the US-Iran war. The price of gasoline increased by about 30% and diesel by 40%.
Syrian Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir said yesterday that Syria is producing about 102,000 barrels of oil per day, while it needs about 325,000 barrels per day for domestic consumption and is relying on imports to make up the difference.
Renewed instability in Syria could widen the fallout from the US-Iran conflict, creating new openings for armed groups, straining regional security, and placing pressure on President Ahmad al-Sharaa's US-aligned government.

Today's business ownership landscape is increasingly complicated by financial, voting, contractual and capital arrangements. A direct relationship between ownership and control can no longer be assumed, particularly for strategically important companies.
Sika, a Swiss chemicals company, entered a four-year corporate battle in 2014, when building-material firm Saint-Gobain announced it would buy a controlling majority. Although the Burkard family owned 16% of shares, a dual-class structure granted them over 52% of voting rights. Sika showed why economic ownership does not necessarily equal voting power.
A relevant example took place between American firms Endeavor Group Holdings, now WME Group, and Silver Lake, in 2024. Endeavor agreed to be taken private by Silver Lake, which already controlled over 70% of Endeavor's voting rights. Silver Lake could therefore approve the merger, effectively controlling the company's future before owning it. Mubadala, Goldman Sachs and other investors also took part, making a true "owner" difficult to define.
The stakes change when a company is deeply involved in a country's industrial capacity. Energy infrastructure, semiconductors, and critical-mineral producers introduce geopolitical considerations.
Korea Zinc, among the world's most prominent refined zinc producers, has seen a dispute with Young Poong putting the history of the two firms and their controlling families in the spotlight. Korea Zinc emerged from a partnership between the Choi and Jang families, who control Korea Zinc and Young Poong respectively. The Choi family has maintained management control despite Young Poong being the largest shareholder, with a stake of 33-37%. In 2024, Young Poong partnered with South Korean MBK Partners, launching a tender offer resulting in joint ownership of over 46% of voting shares.
The transaction created several layers of control. Young Poong agreed to a cooperation agreement to jointly exercise voting rights with MBK Partners. While Young Poong continued to hold shares, MBK acquired a stronger role in deciding how they would be used. On a newly formed board at Korea Zinc, directors nominated by MBK would later outnumber those selected by Young Poong, essentially determining the board's composition. A call option on Young Poong's Korea Zinc shares was also granted to MBK Partners. The option has drawn controversy because Young Poong is alleged to have granted MBK highly favorable terms at below market costs, exposing it to significant financial losses.

California Enacts New Child Safety Laws On Social Media And AI Chatbots
Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday signed bills that restrict how social media companies may design products for children and that tighten rules for AI companion chatbots.
He announced the package on X.
"I just signed the strongest kid safety laws for AI chatbots and social media in America," Newsom wrote. "California is banning addictive social media features for kids, cracking down on dangerous AI chatbots, and strengthening privacy protections for ALL kids. PROTECT OUR KIDS!"
The signing took place in Marin County, where Newsom was joined by his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and the legislators who carried the measures.
The social media bills focus on product design.
AB 1709, by Assemblyman Josh Lowenthal, a Democrat representing Long Beach, bars platforms from offering users under 16 autoplay and algorithmic feeds drawn from a user's history and profile.
AB 2, also Lowenthal's, adds civil penalties when children are injured.
Fighting Online Addiction
In September 2024, Newsom signed SB 976, the Protecting Our Kids from Social Media Addiction Act. That statute would have required parental consent before addictive feeds reached minors and would have limited alerts during school hours and overnight. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Jan. 28, 2025, blocked SB 976 after NetChoice sued, arguing the law impinged upon protected speech.
Thursday's package focuses on strict age verification and penalties. Chatbots are another focus.
SB 1119 is titled Adam's Law, named after Adam Raine, 16, of California, whose parents, Matthew and Maria Raine, sued OpenAI in San Francisco Superior Court on Aug. 26, 2025. Their complaint argued ChatGPT became their son's "closest confidant," mentioned suicide more than 1,200 times, and urged him toward what it called a "beautiful suicide."
Adam's Law, the governor's office said, requires companion-chatbot firms to keep crisis protocols for suicidal ideation, provide parental controls, notify a parent if a child disables safety settings, submit to independent child-safety audits, and file annual risk assessments.
