What happened
The East–West pipeline, also known as Petroline, was attacked at multiple locations in the Riyadh and Medina regions on Thursday. Several people were reportedly injured.
Saudi Arabia's Energy Ministry ordered a temporary shutdown as a precaution while emergency and technical teams secure and assess the pipeline.
The pipeline runs roughly 1,200 km from Saudi Arabia's eastern oil-producing region to Yanbu on the Red Sea, giving Saudi Arabia a route that can bypass the Strait of Hormuz.
Recent reporting indicates the pipeline had been carrying roughly 4–5 million barrels per day, making the shutdown potentially significant for global oil supply.
Saudi officials have attributed the drone attack to drones originating from Iraq, although the precise perpetrators remain a major point of contention. Saudi Arabia has reportedly chosen not to retaliate immediately, giving Baghdad an opportunity to investigate.
Why this is important
This is particularly serious because the Strait of Hormuz is already severely disrupted in the current regional conflict. The East–West pipeline is one of Saudi Arabia's key alternatives for getting crude to the Red Sea and onward to international markets.
So the combination of:
Hormuz disruption + East–West pipeline shutdown + Red Sea/Bab el-Mandeb insecurity
creates a much tighter global oil-supply situation. Brent crude has been trading above $100/barrel, with the pipeline shutdown adding further upward pressure.
If you're watching this from an oil/investment perspective, the key question now is whether this is a hours/days-long precautionary shutdown or a prolonged outage. A prolonged outage would be considerably more consequential for crude prices.

Washington’s Heroic Crossing of the Delaware on December 25, 1776—One of the greatest moments and turning points of the Revolution—is not even mentioned in the Museum. His Victory at Trenton, and the stories of the Americans who fought and died for our Independence, deserve far more attention.
Under recently ended leadership, the Smithsonian created a “Center for Restorative History,” and commissioned a “Decolonization Plan,” to focus attention overwhelmingly on those who have been oppressed, but there is almost no attention paid to those who triumphed over great oppression, and against great odds.
One current exhibit describes the period of 1492 to 1776, including Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the New World, and the European settlement of America, as the “Great Unsettling” of the Continent.
That tells you all you need to know about how twisted the thinking is today at the Smithsonian.
Instead of a Center for Restorative History, America’s National History Museum should have a Center for American Heroes.
Tell the stories of Americans who faced great challenges, overcame them, built great things, defended our Country, made America better, and helped our Nation more fully live up to our Founding Ideals.
That is a History worth teaching, because it is America’s story.
Instead of focusing on ideological activism, the leaders of America’s taxpayer-funded, National History Museum should be focused on telling America’s story—fairly, accurately, and coherently—and there is no better person to start with than George Washington.

European Union Mulls Punishing German Region for Electing Populists
The European Union is contemplating withholding funds from Saxony-Anhalt following Alternative for Germany’s win in its regional elections, alleging potential breaches of EU principles.
On Sunday, the AfD won its first state-wide victory ever in Saxony-Anhalt, as support for Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s notionally center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) plummeted. The AfD won almost 44 percent of the vote but fell three seats short of a majority in the Landtag, equivalent to a U.S. state legislature. Saxony-Anhalt is set to receive €2.95 billion (~$3.4 billion) from the EU’s 2021-27 budget. However, Daniel Freund, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from the Greens, a left-wing European party, has pushed to withhold the funds from the region. Freund argued that funds should be withheld from the region if an AfD-controlled state government legislates in a way contrary to so-called EU values. The EU has previously withheld funds from Hungary and Poland under similar circumstances.
Freezing EU funds could significantly affect Saxony-Anhalt’s regional development, impacting public infrastructure and services. The AfD has dismissed the EU’s potential actions as undemocratic, characterizing the idea as punishing the voters of Saxony-Anhalt. If the EU opts to freeze funds to the region or attempts to override state government decisions through financial pressure, this could increase hostility towards the EU and bolster support for the AfD. It is also possible that the EU goes ahead with defunding the region in order to slight President Donald J. Trump, who congratulated the AfD on their win earlier this week. “Wow!
