It was a full-blown bloodbath in ankle-to-waist-deep-looking water — and another reminder that Nantucket has become prime great white territory.

The reason is food.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy says white shark abundance around Cape Cod has increased over the past decade “primarily in response to the local population recovery of gray seals,” one of the species’ favorite prey items.

And Nantucket has been especially sharky this year. In June, fisherman Elliot Sudal unexpectedly hooked an estimated 8½- to 9-foot great white from the island’s south shore. “Everything has been showing up earlier the last few years,” Sudal said, noting that even with water temperatures still in the 50s, sharks had already arrived.

Massachusetts officials later tightened restrictions on shore-based shark fishing around Nantucket after several incidents involving anglers targeting whites close to swimmers and surfers. State officials called the practice an “acute public safety risk.”

The broader Northeast has also seen unusual shark activity. In August, Maine lifeguard Greg Wilfert said a shark grabbed his rescue buoy and dragged him about five feet underwater before he escaped. Marine resources officer Daryen Granata said at least a dozen sharks had recently been spotted near popular beaches — “a large volume, larger than I’ve seen” in more than 30 years.

For Nantucket, however, the equation is simple: seals bring sharks.

And sometimes the hunt unfolds practically on the beach.

The nation’s major television networks are declining to participate in White House pool duties moving forward in response to the Trump administration’s decision to bar CNN, MS NOW and POLITICO from the White House, Fox News Washington Bureau Chief and current TV pool chair Bryan Boughton wrote in an email to TV pool subscribers.

“This is to advise that, effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President,” Boughton wrote in the email, obtained by POLITICO. “This follows the White House’s position preventing CNN from fulfilling its assigned pool duties. There will be no replacement pool put in place.”

Instead, it listed Hearst, which operates local TV stations across the country, as secondary TV crew in Washington, and the pro-TrumpReal America’s Voiceas secondary TV crew for the president’s trip to New York.

It was not immediately clear to what extent those outlets, which are outside the traditional five-network TV pool arrangement, would disseminate their footage more broadly.

Flights at Newark, JFK, LaGuardia airports disrupted due to equipment outage, FAA says

Flights into and out of Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy International and LaGuardia airports are delayed due to an equipment outage, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The outage is having aripple effect on air traffic throughout the country.

A ground stop was ordered at around 10 a.m. Monday at Newark and has been extended multiple times. Currently, it's set to expire at 5:45 p.m.

A stop was ordered at 12:38 p.m. for JFK, which is now a ground delay until 10:59 p.m. LaGuardia's stop was issued at 12:43 p.m. and is now a delay until 9:59 p.m., according to the FAA. Included in the stop were flights to the two airports from more than a dozen regions across the U.S. and Canada, including Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, Cleveland, Miami, Toronto and Montreal.

"The FAA is pausing flights into Philadelphia International, Teterboro and Newark Liberty International airports due to issues with some frequencies at Philadelphia TRACON," a spokesperson said Monday morning.

TRACON stands for Terminal Radar Approach Control. It is an air traffic control facility that uses radar and radios to guide planes approaching and departing from airports.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said an Amtrak crew accidentally cut into a Verizon fiber line in New Jersey, causing the outage, according to a social media post. CBS News New York reached out to Amtrak, which said the incident happened on NJ Transit property.

NJ Transit then released the following statement:

"At approximately 9:45 a.m. today, a construction crew working on the Delco Lead project between New Brunswick and North Brunswick accidentally severed a fiber-optic cable while working at the site. We've been made aware that this cable served as a back-up to a primary circuit system that failed," NJ Transit said.

"Preliminary information indicates the crew was operating approximately 10 feet from the utility markings. NJ TRANSIT staff is currently on site working to determine the status of the repairs, while also determining whether it was Verizon or the contractor who made the utility markings at the site.

"We will continue to work closely with Verizon and the contractor as the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated. We will provide additional updates as information becomes available."

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said the primary circuit in Philadelphia TRACON failed. The backup line also had a break, he said.

"That fiber break is probably 13 hours to repair. It's massive, I'm told," he said.

Bedford said the cut is somewhere between New Brunswick and Newark. A new circuit is being installed, he said.

Some flights that were already in the air when the ground stops went into effect were sent to other airports. A spokesperson for Boston's Logan Airport confirmed they were "getting a lot of diversions from impacted airports."

Travelers are encouraged to check with their airlines for the latest information about individual flights.

Iowa Republican running for Senate calls on Trump to end Iran war

Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, on Monday called on President Donald Trump to end the Iran war as economic fallout appears poised to seriously hurt Republican political prospects in the November midterms.

Hinson is seeking the state's open Senate seat, left by the retiring Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa. Though she is favored to win the contest, polling has shown a close race in a state that has drifted toward the Republicans in recent years.

"Iowans are being squeezed and shouldn’t have to foot the bill at the pump or the checkout line for the war in Iran. We need to use every option at our disposal to provide some relief from high prices," she posted on X. Hinson then rolled out a series of proposals to curb prices.

"These actions to lower costs are needed ASAP, and the war needs to be brought to a successful and immediate end," she added.

Hinson's comments mark the latest instance of Republicans voicing frustrations with Trump over the conflict, which has also seen his own approval ratings fall considerably.
