Drone warfare is at the forefront of every nation's developing defense technology and the Trump administration is utilizing private sector "incubators" to bring America's best and brightest together to protect the country, including one new company's groundbreaking product to counter malign drones within seconds.

"We are acting as an incubator, as a catalyst for all of those potential solutions in the private sector...a competition for the best athlete to find out not only what drones we need, because we're not going to be buying drones from other countries, we're going to be building them here for our war fighters, the first-person view drones (FPV) that are used to attack our enemies, but also for the defensive measures," Dr. Sebastian Gorka, Senior Director for Counterterrorism at the National Security Council, told Just The News.

One such anti-drone technology that has emerged is Space Eyes' Morpheus Counter-Unmanned Aerial System (C-UAS) that combines advanced radio-frequency signal processing, artificial intelligence, and quantum-resistant security to detect, classify, and neutralize airborne threats within seconds.

"We just hosted one of the largest sporting events we've ever seen in the world with FIFA and that (drone warfare) was at the forefront," Derek Gordon, President of National Security at Space Eyes told Just The News.

"But a few years ago, the countermeasures were not what they are now. Criminals are always trying to be a step ahead of law enforcement in their techniques, and the US government as a whole spends an exorbitant amount of resources on countering something that costs the enemy a few dollars to make. So, without the partnership of private industry, this problem wouldn't be solved," Gordon said.

Funding the fight against drones

Exorbitant resources are currently hanging in the balance. On July 22, the House of Representatives narrowly passed its $1.15 trillion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal 2027, authorizing Defense Department programs and related activities. The Senate version remains stalled after a failed cloture vote.

The same day, the House advanced a reconciliation budget resolution with roughly $60 billion in additional defense funding, mainly for Iran conflict costs and munitions. It falls far short of the administration’s $350 billion request and faces an uncertain Senate path. The NDAA authorizes spending but does not appropriate funds.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

"We just have to make sure our defense department is adequately funded, and it's funded for the right things. We have to make sure we're not fighting the last war and end some of the contracts we put in place 10 or 15 years ago, and make sure we have a robust defense against drones both in the battlefield and at home," Rep. Glenn Grothman, R-Wis., told Just The News.

Grothman also made a suggestion to close the gaps between federal funding and drone attacks in towns across America. "I think this is something that would be a good thing for Mike Johnson to look at. Provide some assets or perhaps to fund some drones for local governments as well."

National Institutes of Health Director Jay Bhattacharya said the Trump administration’s newly announced ban on federally funded gain-of-function research represents a significant shift in federal biomedical policy, adding that the agency is committed to greater transparency, open scientific debate and a new approach to pandemic preparedness.

Speaking in an interview Thursday with the Just the News, No Noise TV program, Bhattacharya called the new approach “an absolutely vital policy.”

“The United States will never again support research that has a chance of causing catastrophic human harm,” he said. “We’ve been working for a year and a half on getting the details right, getting the incentives right. I’m so excited to be able to announce that policy. It’s going to make Americans safer going forward.”

His comments came after the Trump administration announced a government-wide policy banning federal funding for certain high-risk gain-of-function research and expanding oversight of experiments involving dangerous pathogens, such as some research conducted overseas with U.S. taxpayer funding.

Trump administration officials said the policy was intended to reduce the risk of laboratory-related accidents while maintaining support for biomedical research under tighter safeguards.

Many U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that a laboratory-related incident in China, such as a leak, sparked the COVID pandemic. Other entities have argued that the lab leak theory has not yet been fully confirmed.

Bhattacharya said transparency would be central to the NIH under his leadership.

“Science requires you to say, ‘Here’s what I’ve done. Here’s the data. Please check me,’” he said.

“That kind of transparency is absolutely vital to science,” Bhattacharya added. “What I saw during the pandemic was censorship instead of science, and that is the death of any scientific culture.”

He said the agency had turned a page from its previous approach.

“The page is turned,” Bhattacharya said. “The current NIH will not take the Fifth on what we’re doing on science. What we’ll do is we will say clearly, 'here’s what we’ve done. Here are the data. Please come check our work.'"

Bhattacharya also said discussions were underway within the Trump administration about developing a new pandemic response “playbook” going forward.

“What I have seen has filled me with hope that the pandemic playbook that we come out with will be a very different pandemic playbook that led to the lockdowns, the school closures, the vaccine mandates, and all the rest,” he said.

On vaccine safety, Bhattacharya said the NIH was establishing a new research center.

“We are establishing a vaccine injury center, so that we can honestly study vaccine injury instead of gaslighting patients to say that, ‘Oh you don’t have any problems at all,’” he said.

“We have to take the science around vaccines seriously,” he added. “That means honestly looking at the benefits, which are many, many benefits for many, many of the vaccines, but also honestly looking at the harms. And if we don’t do that, then we are not painting a real, true picture.”

Asked about ivermectin, Bhattacharya said he was not taking an official position on the anti-parasite drug that was used to treat COVID, but he thinks that scientific debate should not have been discouraged.

“My mind is open on this,” he said.

“Demonizing the people who liked it never made sense to me,” Bhattacharya said. “It was an open scientific conversation that should have been embraced.”

He added, “The key thing, as NIH director, is to open up the scientific debate. Let scientists have the fights that we always have, so that we can come to better, more rigorous, more certain conclusions."

Bhattacharya also said records documenting former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci’s thinking during the pandemic should be made public if they were created using government resources.

“It is a document that is a historical document that, for the sake of transparency, belongs to the American people,” he said.

Bhattacharya also criticized Fauci’s public messaging during the COVID pandemic.

“The sin here was that he told the American public things with a degree of confidence that was not justified by the scientific evidence,” he said. “We could have had instead a more humble communication about the scientific uncertainty from a top figure like Tony Fauci, and then what would have happened is a scientific discussion and debate that would have led to better policy.”

MADISON - Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said his administration will resist any efforts by the FBI to seize voting documents if federal authorities expand their probe of the 2020 presidential election to Wisconsin.

Evers made his comments after the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first reported a potential threat to Milwaukee voters' right to a secret ballot.

The FBI in recent weeks has seized voting data in two battleground states where President Donald Trump lost reelection in 2020. If the FBI takes its effort to relitigate the 2020 presidential election to Milwaukee County, federal authorities will be able to figure out how tens of thousands of residents there voted because of a state law that sets Wisconsin apart from other battleground states.

The law requires poll workers to affix a voter number to all absentee ballots counted in a central counting facility, which exist in Milwaukee and more than three dozen other Wisconsin municipalities.

And because Milwaukee election officials have not yet destroyed the 2020 presidential election ballots, those voter numbers could be matched against poll book information to determine which candidate voters picked that year if such voting documents are seized.

So far, there has not been any movement in Wisconsin by federal authorities on this front.

“In this state, Wisconsinites have a constitutional right to cast a secret ballot, and that’s something we take really seriously — even Kathy and I don’t always talk about who we vote for," Evers told the Journal Sentinel in a statement, referring to his wife.

The Democratic governor said he would sign a repeal of the state law that requires absentee ballots in central counting facilities to include a voter identification number given clerks' support for doing so.

But Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, said he wants to keep the law in place as an added safeguard.

"It’s important we don’t eliminate any law that will prevent double voting or allow anyone here illegally to cast a vote," Vos said in a statement.

"Our number one priority should be keeping our elections secure and ensuring our citizens trust the system."

Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu did not respond to questions about the matter.

State and local election officials were on alert Monday after the FBI issued a grand jury subpoena for voting information in Maricopa County, Arizona − the second battleground state where federal authorities have compelled the release of records related to the 2020 election.

In late January, federal investigators seized hundreds of boxes related to the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia.

Election officials are bracing for the probe to expand to Milwaukee, where Trump has repeatedly leveled baseless claims of fraud in the 2020 election − including on the night of the election, when it became clear Trump would lose.

Absentee voting skyrocketed in the 2020 presidential election because of the advent of the coronavirus pandemic, which pushed people to avoid public places. In Milwaukee, nearly 180,000 people voted absentee.

Following Trump's loss, his campaign paid for a recount in the liberal Dane and Milwaukee counties and unsuccessfully sought to throw out all absentee ballots cast in those counties, which would have overturned the election result.

Trump continues to falsely claim he won Wisconsin's 2020 presidential contest, despite court rulings and audits showing otherwise.

A Fire Rainbow over West Virginia

What's happening to this cloud? Ice crystals in a distant cirrus cloud are acting like little floating prisms. Known informally as a fire rainbow for its flame-like appearance, a circumhorizon arc appears parallel to the horizon. For a circumhorizontal arc to be visible, the Sun must be at least 58 degrees high in a sky where cirrus clouds present below - in this case cirrus fibratus. The numerous, flat, hexagonal ice-crystals that compose the cirrus cloud must be aligned horizontally to properly refract sunlight in a collectively similar manner. Therefore, circumhorizontal arcs are somewhat unusual to see. The featured fire rainbow was photographed in 2021 near North Fork Mountain in West Virginia, USA.

EUROPE – Another NATO member will eventually take over running the Security Assistance Group, according to a U.S official and three people familiar with the plan, which hasplayed a central rolein equipping and training Ukrainian troops since the full-scale Russian invasion began. But the removal of U.S. leadership from a pivotal program on the continent reinforces theextent to which America is distancing itself from European partners.

The move will meanthe U.S. no longer helps shape what Ukraine’s future militarywill look like. It follows a swath of changes the Trump administration has made to the decades-old alliance. ThePentagon has reduced the number of American officers running commands in Europeand canceled some rotations. Officials are reassessing troops stationed on the continent andwarning countries they won’t receive assistance unless their defense spending increases.

“A European or Canadian officer taking command … would be yet another example of allies taking on greater responsibility,” said a NATO official, who like others, was granted anonymity to discuss the unannounced plan.

A solar eclipse, one of the year's best meteor showers, Venus at its brightest in the evening sky, and a lunar eclipse to close out the month.

That's “What’s Up” for August.

On Aug. 12, a total solar eclipse crosses northern Russia, Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain, with a small corner of Portugal inside the path of totality.

In parts of the United States, from Alaska to North Carolina, the eclipse is partial. The Moon will take only a small bite out of the Sun, and the amount of coverage will vary with location.

Remember to watch safely. Use certified eclipse glasses or a safe solar viewer any time any part of the Sun is visible. Regular sunglasses are not safe. And never use binoculars, a telescope, or a camera without a solar filter made for the front of the optics.

Later that same night, the Perseid meteor shower will light up the sky, peaking the evening of Aug. 12 into the early morning hours of the 13th. And with a New Moon arriving on the 12th, the skies will be ideally dark.

The Perseids happen every year when Earth passes through a debris stream left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. As those tiny bits of comet dust hit our atmosphere at high speed, they burn up as bright streaks of light.

To view this meteor shower, look toward the northeast once it's fully dark and watch for the constellation Perseus to clear the horizon. This is where the meteors originate, but let your eyes wander, because they can flash across any part of the sky.

For the best view, stay out late as the stars climb higher, find a dark open spot, and give your eyes 30 minutes to adjust.

Aug. 14-16, Venus reaches its greatest eastern elongation, which is its widest apparent separation from the Sun during this evening appearance.

Look low in the western sky shortly after sunset for the bright object that will outshine every star around it. Through a telescope after sunset, Venus will look close to half lit, like a tiny lunar phase.

On the night of Aug. 27, continuing into Aug. 28 for some time zones, the Full Moon slips through Earth's shadow, resulting in a partial lunar eclipse. It will be visible from much of North and South America and parts of Europe and Africa.

At maximum eclipse, about 93% of the Moon's diameter will be inside Earth's dark central shadow, called the umbra. The Moon will not be completely covered, but it can look dramatically darkened, with a rusty, coppery tint along the covered edge.

Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is safe to watch with just your eyes. Binoculars or a small telescope can give you a closer view of Earth's curved shadow moving across the Moon.

Double digits! Air-launched 'Talon A' hypersonic vehicle notches big flight milestone

A cutting-edge hypersonic vehicle just hit a big flight milestone.

Stratolaunch's reusable, autonomous Talon-A craft now has more than 10 successful flights under its belt, the California-based company announced late last month.

"Reaching more than 10 successful hypersonic flights with Talon-A is a testament to our team's dedication and the robustness of our technology," Stratolaunch President and CEO Zachary Krevor said in a July 22 statement.

"We are transforming hypersonic testing from a rare event into a routine service, empowering our customers to innovate at unprecedented speed."

Stratolaunch has two Talon-A vehicles, each of which is about 28 feet (8.5 meters) long with a wingspan of 11.3 feet (3.4 m). The craft can travel through Earth's atmosphere at more than five times the speed of sound (Mach 5) — the definition of hypersonic flight.

Talon-A missions start beneath the belly of a carrier plane, which hauls the robotic vehicle into the sky and drops it down. Stratolaunch has two such carriers — a modified Boeing 747 called Spirit of Mojave and Roc, a custom-built vehicle that measures a whopping 385 feet (117 m) from wingtip to wingtip, the biggest wingspan in aviation history.

Roc and Spirit of Mojave lift off from Mojave Air and Space Port in southeastern California and tend to drop Talon-A over the Pacific Ocean.

After completing its hypersonic flight, the vehicle comes back for a runway landing in California, generally at Vandenberg Space Force Base, on the state's scenic central coast.

These jaunts test sensors and advanced new materials in the hypersonic flight environment, among other tasks.

Details about Talon-A's payloads tend to be sparse, likely because many Stratolaunch customers — the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, for example — are tight-lipped by nature.

Indeed, military agencies around the world are increasingly interested in hypersonic tech.

Superfast, maneuverable vehicles like Talon-A are tougher to track and intercept than ballistic missiles, which follow predictable trajectories despite moving fast.

(To be clear: Talon-A itself is not a weapon or weapon-delivery system; it's a technology testbed.)

Stratolaunch isn't the only company that gives customer payloads hypersonic rides. Rocket Lab provides this service with HASTE, a suborbital version of its workhorse Electron rocket.

HASTE debuted in June 2023 and now has nine flights under its belt. But the vehicle's cadence will likely increase soon; in March, Rocket Lab signed a $190 million contract to conduct 20 HASTE missions for the U.S. military.

The United States Department of War's Office of Strategic Capital announced today a conditional loan commitment of up to $820 million to Performance Drone Works to establish high-volume domestic manufacturing capacity for critical drone components.

Together, the OSC financing and additional private capital committed alongside it will support a new high-volume source of domestically manufactured components for use across the broader U.S. drone industrial base.

The project is intended to supply components to multiple manufacturers and platforms, representing a significant expansion of domestic production capacity for drone components.

These components are intended to support a range of Group 1 and Group 2 unmanned aircraft produced by PDW and other domestic manufacturers.

With this strategic financing, OSC will enable the development of production capacity to address critical component bottlenecks facing the broader U.S. unmanned-systems ecosystem.

"PDW will be one of several domestic component producers receiving OSC loan commitments in support of President Trump's Executive Order 14307, 'Unleashing American Drone Dominance.'

Expanding domestic component production will benefit manufacturers throughout the ecosystem and improve supply-chain resilience," said David A. Lorch, Director of the Office of Strategic Capital and Senior Advisor to Deputy Secretary of War Steve Feinberg.

James R. Shanahan, Senior Managing Director at OSC, added, "We are squarely focused on identifying and addressing bottlenecks in critical supply chains, including drones and autonomous systems.

OSC's transaction with PDW, along with private capital crowded in alongside it, will support the construction of significant new manufacturing capacity to address vulnerabilities across the drone supply chain."

The conditional loan commitment between OSC and PDW specifies customary additional steps the company must take to proceed toward financial close, including satisfying financial, legal, technical, and other due diligence requirements.

WASHINGTON—U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright today directed Sable Offshore Corp. to restore operations of the Santa Ynez Unit and Santa Ynez Pipeline System to address supply disruption risks caused by California policies that have left the region and U.S. military forces dependent on foreign oil. This action issued under authorities provided by the Defense Production Act and delegated through Executive Order, “National Defense Resources Preparedness,” as amended by President Trump’s Executive Order, “Adjusting Certain Delegations Under the Defense Production Act.”

“The Trump Administration remains committed to putting all Americans and their energy security first,” Secretary Wright said. “Unfortunately, some state leaders have not adhered to those same principles, with potentially disastrous consequences not just for their residents, but also our national security. Today’s order will strengthen America’s oil supply and restore a pipeline system vital to our national security and defense, ensuring that West Coast military installations have the reliable energy critical to military readiness.”

Sable's facility can produce approximately 50,000 barrels of oil per day, a 15 percent increase to California’s in-state oil production, that can replace nearly 1.5 million barrels of foreign crude each month.

California once supplied nearly 40 percent of U.S. oil production, but decades of radical state policies targeting reliable energy sources have driven a decline in domestic output while fuel demand remains among the highest in the nation. Today, more than 60 percent of the oil refined in California comes from overseas, with a significant share traveling through the Strait of Hormuz—presenting serious national security threats.

Unlike other regions of the country, California remains largely disconnected from interstate crude pipelines that move American oil to refineries across the United States. The action also prioritizes pipeline transportation capacity to ensure crude produced offshore California moves through the Las Flores Pipeline System to Pentland Station and into interstate pipelines, allowing American energy to reach domestic refineries more efficiently, while reducing California's reliance on foreign oil vulnerable to geopolitical disruption.

Sable Offshore currently employs more than 100 workers and approximately 400 contractors in Santa Barbara County, and restoring operations is expected to create hundreds of additional American energy jobs while generating millions in local economic activity.

Several sunken World War II-era Nazi warships have resurfaced in the Danube River amid a major heatwave and prolonged drought. The vessels became visible as the water level in Europe’s second-longest river fell to record lows.

Photos and videos posted on social media showed massive shipwrecks lying in the water and on a sand ridge in the middle of the waterway near the village of Prahovo in Serbia.

Elsewhere, the wreck of aHungarian cargo ship that sank in 1937 resurfaced near the Croatian village of Opatovac.

Some 200 vessels could be lying on the bottom of the Danube River, according to the European Investment Bank. River transport has nearly come to a halt due to the low water levels, according to Hungary’s Transport Ministry.

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar also said thatthe Paks nuclear power plant, which covers nearly half of Hungary’s electricity needs, could be shut down for weeks because of insufficient water levels

In Budapest, a German WWII artillery shell was found near Margaret Bridge – one of the city’s major traffic arteries– last week. The discovery prompted brief safety closures as a bomb disposal team was deployed to the area. Hungary’s national weather authority also reported a record-low water level of 23cm in the Danube as it flows through the city. The previous all-time low, set in 2018, was 33cm.

In northernBulgaria, the drying-up river revealed what is believed to be the remains of a mammoth. The bones were found by a local resident of the village of Ryahovo. Nikolay Nenov, a director of a regional history museum in the nearby town of Ruse, called the discovery “very important for science.”

The Danube is expected to go even lower in the coming days, with no significant rain forecast and temperatures expected to exceed 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees F) in the region, according to AP.

The FBI and the Environmental Protection Agency are warning that malicious cyber actors are targeting internet-connected equipment used by water and wastewater utilities, causing "operational disruptions" and raising concerns about the security of critical infrastructure.

In a public service announcement, the agencies said cyber actors are targeting internet-facing programmable logic controllers (PLCs), including certain Rockwell Automation Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1100 and 1400 series devices.

“The FBI is aware of malicious cyber actors targeting internet-facing programmable logic controllers (PLCs) associated with the Water and Wastewater Systems (WWS) Sector,” the alert said.

According to the release, attackers have remotely accessed vulnerable devices, changed passwords and IP addresses, modified controller settings and, in some cases, interrupted normal operations. Federal officials said the activity has affected water and wastewater systems in multiple states.

The FBI and EPA warned that exposing operational technology directly to the internet creates unnecessary risk. “Cyber actors exploit these devices because they are internet accessible and often use default credentials or outdated software,” the agencies said.

Officials urged utilities to take immediate steps to reduce their exposure, including disconnecting devices from the public internet "whenever possible."

Water-System Hacks Hit 7 States This Week, FBI Warns, As Trump Shoots Down Iran Theory

Cyberattacks on municipal water systems were reported in at least seven states this week, according to a joint public service announcement from the FBI and the Environmental Protection Agency - and in some cases, the agencies say, the malicious activity actually degraded water operations. The feds declined to name the states.

The warning lands just days after we reported that a "coordinated cyberattack" struck more than 30 community water systems in Minnesota over July 26-27 - knocking the water plant in tiny Braham offline for a stretch, pushing Plymouth and South St. Paul onto manual operations, and prompting Maple Plain to declare a local state of emergency, according to Just The News.

The playbook, per federal officials, was crude but effective: attackers remotely accessed internet-facing operational technology, changed device IP addresses and passwords, and locked utility operators out of their own monitoring and control systems, NBC News reported. The PSA is now pleading with utilities to do the bare minimum - pull programmable logic controllers off the open internet and put them behind gateways and firewalls, use actual passwords, and restrict which devices are allowed to talk to one another.

Thewomen’s tennis tour has made it compulsory for its players to complete a one-off mandatory gene test to determine their eligibility.

The new policy will come into effect on Tuesday, at which point all competitors who wish to compete in the women’s category will have to be screened.

The testing is described as a “one-time screening process for the SRY gene” by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), which can be conducted via a cheek swab or blood sample, as initially reported by Bounces.

It is the same eligibility mandate as World Athletics introduced for its competitions last year, and the International Olympic Committee announced for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

In the WTA’s recently updated policy on its website, it says the rule is to “preserve the integrity of women’s professional tennis and maintain fair competition conditions” for all of its players.

The SRY gene is involved in male-typical sex development and is found on the Y chromosome. The policy defines it as the gene responsible for turning “undifferentiated gonads into testes rather than ovaries."

“The WTA recognizes that this is a sensitive and complex issue and is committed to treating all players with dignity and implementing the policy in a respectful and thoughtful way,” the regulations state.

“This policy distinguishes between biological sex and gender identity, and between biological females and biological males, solely to the extent necessary to ensure that the policy is clear and has its intended effect. There is no intent to disrespect or question the gender identity or the dignity of any person.”

The WTA expanded to clarify the terms “biological male” or “biological female” are defined by them as the respective possession or absence of the SRY gene.

Theprevious policy, introduced in 2024, permitted transgender women and players who identified as non-binary to compete in WTA events — so long as they declared their gender identity was female or non-binary, and kept the concentration of testosterone in their blood below 2.5 nmol/L when competing and the two years before.

There are no known transgender women ⁠currently active on the WTA tour.

The compulsory method of defining the women’s category has been divisive when introduced across other sports.

UK LGBTQ+ rights charity Stonewall responded to the IOC’s implementation of it by saying it “stokes further division in our increasingly polarised world”.

The White House, however, has supported the testing for the Olympics and The Athletic reported in April it wanted FIFA to follow the IOC’s lead in issuing the policy for soccer too.

A petition urging New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to stay away from the commemoration of the 9/11 attacks has gained traction online, attracting more than 70,000 backers.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the attack, which resulted in nearly 3,000 fatalities and the destruction of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City.The annual commemoration is customarily held at the monument built on the spot where the towers used to stand. It is frequented by senior local and federal officials.

The upcoming anniversary sparked controversy well before the event, with a group of relatives of the victims launching a petition against Mamdani’s participation. According to the petitioners, the motion has nothing to do with the mayor’s religion, but with his controversial views and perceived connections to radicals.

The petition, which was launched last month, reached 50,000 verified signatures earlier this week and over 70,000 as of Sunday.It calls out the Muslim mayor over what it described as “public positions, associations, and responses to rhetoric that many perceive as hostile to these shared values.”

Among other things,it listed the mayor’s connections to radical Brooklyn Imam Siraj Wahhaj and the appointment of Ramzi Kassem, who previously represented a terrorist convictedin an al-Qaeda tanker bombing plot. The petition also called out his father, Mahmood Mamdani, over his 2004 book Good Muslim, Bad Muslim, in which the political scientist argued the 9/11 attack should be “understood as a feature of modern political violence rather than stigmatized as a mark of barbarism.” The mayor had previously noted that his father had largely shaped his own views, the petition pointed out.

Earlier this week, Mamdani brushed off the motion, describing it as an attempt by some people to keep him away from the commemoration and signaling his intention to attend. “I will proudly honor the families, the survivors, the first responders forever impacted by that horrific terror attack by standing alongside them at this year’s 9/11 commemorationreaffirming that we will never forget the solemn day felt by all of us who call this city home,” he stated.

A smaller activist group of the victim’s relatives,the September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, stood by the mayor, condemning the petitioners over the alleged “anti-American accusations and Islamophobic sentiment.”

The dissenting group, believed to have just over 250 active members, has been bankrolled by the Soros Foundation, receiving more than $500,000 in grants from it over the past decade.

The controversy comes as the feud between the NYC mayor and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reignited this week after Mamdani said the latter could be arrested on war-crimes charges should he visit the city. Netanyahu claimed the mayor sided with Iran and accused him and other critics of Israel of “moral cynicism” and “absurdity.”

US politicians are using profanity in public far more frequently than in the past, according to research published by Cardiff University politics lecturer Dr Joseph Phillips.

Some 87% of the 692 documented instances of presidents, vice presidents, and presidential candidates using profanity in public have occurred in just the last decade, Phillips wrote. The overwhelming majority of those cases – 78% – came from President Donald Trump and his predecessor Joe Biden, according to the study published this week.

On Wednesday, Trump was heard using another expletive following an Iranian attack on US forces in Jordan. According to Fox News’ chief foreign affairs correspondent, Trey Yingst, the president said: “We’re going to beat the fking st out of them.”Biden previously made headlines while serving as vice president, when he was caught on a hot mic telling then-President Barack Obama that signing the 2010 Affordable Care Act was a “big fking deal.”

For US presidents to use profanity publicly was once exceptionally rare, Phillips noted. According to the study, President Woodrow Wilson became the first to publicly use a naughty word, when he said he’d made a “conspicuous *ss of himself” in 1919.

However, Trump has introduced a broader range of profanities into presidential rhetoric, using words such as “bullsh*t,” “ba*rd,” “b*ch,” and “fk” in speeches, interviews, and social media posts, according to Phillips.

The researcher argued that the trend reflects broader changes in political communication rather than simply the personalities of individual politicians. He said profanity has become increasingly common in US politics, with politicians at all levels of government swearing more frequently than in previous decades.

Phillips also argued that politicians increasingly use profanity because it can signal authenticity at a time when public trust in politics is low. Since swearing is common in everyday conversation, using it publicly may help politicians appear more relatable and less carefully scripted. He added that even voters who dislike political profanity are unlikely to change their political allegiances over it, given the deep ideological divisions between the two major parties.

“Profanity can be a signal of authenticity. In a time of low political trust, signals that a politician is ‘authentic’ are at a premium.”

The study comes as public attitudes toward swearing continue to shift. A series of YouGov polls published last year found that younger Americans were significantly more accepting of profanity at work, on social media, and in front of children than older respondents.Some 21% of adults aged 18-29 considered swearing in front of children completely or somewhat acceptable, compared with just 4% of those aged 65 and older.

Capital One bank has asked a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit from the Trump Organizationover the closure of hundreds of bank accounts back in 2021, arguing in new papers that the shutdowns were the product of a months long anti-money-laundering review — not retaliation for the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, as the Trump family businesses have claimed.

In a motion to dismiss the case filed Friday in a Florida federal court, Capital One's lawyers wrote that the bank's own filings and theTrump businesses' allegations "make clear that Capital One closed Plaintiffs' accounts for anti-money laundering ('AML') reasons."

The bank said the decisionfollowed "months of analysis and a careful review" by its financial-crimes team, which it said was staffed by employees with "decades of law enforcement experience."But the filings suggest the Trump Organization and affiliated entities were given no opportunity to address any money-laundering or compliance concerns before the accounts' closures.

It's unclear if subsequent banks for the Trump Organization have ever raised money laundering concerns, or what steps the organization took in response to Capital One's allegations. The Trump Organization didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The fight is one of several lawsuits Trump-aligned entities have brought against major banks since Trump returned to the White House.

A yearslong dispute over hundreds of accounts

The case centers on roughly 385 accounts tied to the Trump Organization, Eric Trump and a collection of affiliated businesses — including a winery, a bottled-water company and a golf course developer — that banked with Capital One for more than a decade before the accounts were shut down in mid-2021.

In an amended complaint filed earlier in July, the Trump-affiliated companies insisted theclosures had nothing to do with financial crime or money-laundering, but everything to do with politics.

The Trump Organization alleges Capital One moved to distance itself from Donald Trump after the Capitol riot and that thebank's cited anti-money-laundering rationale was invented after the fact to cover for that decision.

Capital One has flatly denied those assertions, with its lawyers arguing in the new filing that the Trump's theory rests on "cherry-picked quotations unsupported by the full context" of the bank's own records, and that nothing in the complaint shows the anti-money-laundering explanation was a cover story.

The bank's lawyers alsonoted that it kept its reasoning for the closures confidential at the time: it "never publicized the termination decision nor its confidential internal process giving rise to the closure," and gave the Trump companies months — plus several extensions — to move their money elsewhere, which they did.

Large sections of the Trump-linked amended complaint from July remain blacked out under a court-approved sealing order, including an entire portion titled "January 6, 2021: The Political Trigger."

Independent journalists Nick Sortor and Karlyn Borysenko were in serious danger on Saturday night after being confronted, threatened with death, and having their vehicle attacked with vomit by Black Lives Matter rioters in a self-declared “autonomous zone” that has taken over several blocks of downtown Madison, Wisconsin.

The zone, known as the “Corey Ruiz Autonomous Zone” or “CRAZ,” was formed in the days following the July 22 police shooting of Corey Ruiz, an armed serial felon who was killed while allegedly attacking an officer with a knife.

Protesters have built barricades of pallets, furniture, and spike strips, blocked streets, set up tents, and effectively seized control of the area around Williamson and Baldwin streets, using the playbook from Seattle’s 2020 CHOP/CHAZ.

Sortor, who was driving with Borysenko in the passenger seat, stopped near the encampment andstepped out of the vehicle in an attempt to make jokes and lighten the mood.

Instead, activists surrounded him, blocked him from returning to his car,swung a pole at him, sprayed vomit on him and his vehicle, damaged the left front quarter panel, and repeatedly threatened to kill him.

Video footage captured one individual warning,“hurry up and leave before your life ends out here” and saying “there’s a whole team of us.”

Borysenko, filming from the passenger seat with a hood over her head, captured the escalating confrontation.

She noted that the woman swinging the pole had previously appeared hostile toward her during an earlier visit to the zone and that the attackers did not appear to recognize either journalist, making the incident even more alarming because “this could happen to anyone.”

Sortor immediately called 911 after escaping.

Both journalists praised the responding Madison police officers as professional and helpful.

Former Congresswoman Kay Granger passed away on Sunday after transitioning to an assisted living facility.

She was 83 years old.

Granger represented Texas’ 12th congressional district for 28 years and served on the House Appropriations Committee.

Kay Granger devoted her life to serving her Fort Worth, Texas community — as a teacher and businesswoman, on the Fort Worth Zoning Commission and City Council, as Mayor, and in Congress for nearly three decades, where she also served as Chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee.

Throughout her career, she broke barriers for women in public service. She was the first woman to serve as Mayor of Fort Worth, the first Republican woman elected to represent Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the first Republican woman to chair the House Appropriations Committee.

Kelly and I send our prayers to her family, loved ones, and the Fort Worth community as we remember her extraordinary life of service and lasting legacy.

She was a dear friend who will be greatly missed.

Recall that in July 2024, Granger suddenly disappeared from the public eye after she cast her final vote against an amendment to reduce the salary of Deputy Assistant Administrator for Pesticide Programs to $1.

A curious reporter at the local Dallas Express newspaper did some digging on Granger’s whereabouts and has finally gave her constituents some answers.

The reporter received a tip-off from a local resident that Granger was residing at an assisted living facility specializing in memory care.

In 2023, Granger announced her retirement from Congress.

Fifty-six men risked their lives to sign the Declaration of Independence – not on July 4 but on August 2, 1776.

The only two men to sign the Declaration on July 4 were Continental Congress President John Hancock and Secretary Charles Thomson.

Virginia’s Richard Henry Lee proposed independence in the Lee Resolution on June 11. There was no consensus, the vote got pushed back several weeks and the first vote on July 1 failed. South Carolina and Pennsylvania voted no. New York abstained and Delaware was deadlocked. Only 9 colonies voted yes.

By July 2, 12 of the 13 colonies voted yes with New York abstaining. This was made possible after several twists of providence. One involved two Pennsylvania delegates who opposed independence skipping the vote. This enabled three who supported independence to outvote the remaining two naysayers. Another was the Paul Revere of Delaware, sickly Caesar Rodney. After learning that Delaware was deadlocked, he rode 80 miles overnight in a storm to cast the tiebreaking vote.

After two days of debate and more than 80 edits, the Declaration was adopted on July 4. Philadelphia printer John Dunlap printed 200 copies of “a Declaration,” distributed colony wide. It wasn’t unanimous because New York wouldn’t approve it until July 9.

Many signers were poor. Many others were wealthy, including those who funded the war effort and died penniless or suffered in debtor’s prison like Pennsylvania’s James Wilson and Robert Morris.

Many signers suffered great personal tragedy. New York’s Francis Lewis’ wife was imprisoned. New Jersey’s Abraham Clark’s sons were imprisoned, suffered and killed. Georgia’s George Walton and New Jersey’s Richard Stockton were also imprisoned.

New Jersey’s John Witherspoon, the only ordained minister who signed the Declaration after rallying for independence from the pulpit, lost his son in the Battle of Germantown.

Eight of the signers weren’t born in the colonies. Pennsylvania’s Morris and Georgia’s Button Gwinnett were born in England. New York’s Francis Lewis was born in Wales. Pennsylvania’s James Smith and George Taylor and New Hampshire’s Matthew Thorton were born in Ireland. Pennsylvania’s James Wilson and New Jersey’s John Witherspoon were born in Scotland.

None of North Carolina’s signers were born in North Carolina and they all died before age 50. Two of the youngest signers, 26, were from South Carolina. The oldest was Ben Franklin, 70. The only Roman Catholic signer was Charles Carroll of Maryland.

The Declaration was printed in every newspaper in the colonies, first by Franklin’s paper in Philadelphia on July 6. It was printed in German on July 9 in Philadelphia for a large German immigrant population. It was printed in Charlestown, South Carolina, in August 1776.

Mary Katherine Goddard of Baltimore was the first woman publisher to print it. She was also the first to print that the declaration was “unanimous” and include the signers’ names.

Of the 200 Dunlap broadsides printed, only 20 are preserved by U.S. institutions. Two are held by British institutions, including one confiscated from a Jewish merchant, Jonas Phillips. Phillips tried to get the word out, joyfully writing about independence in Yiddish.

The Declaration lists 27 grievances against the British king, including taxation without representation, dissolving state legislatures, controlling judges, eliminating jury trials and blocking trade. The most egregious include the king “waging war against us … [who] plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.”

After their petitions went unanswered, the signers declared a united independence “with a firm reliance on Divine Providence” pledging their lives, fortunes and sacred honor.

A man fromCalifornia was arrested in Scottsdale, Arizona, on felony charges after US Postal Inspectors caught him stealing mail,including unvoted mail-in ballots, from a USPS collection box.

The suspect, 26-year-old Richard Anthony Ramos Jr. of Stockton, California,was arrested on July 21with several ballots in his car.

Notably, the Primary elections in Arizona were also held on July 21.

The scheme reportedly involved using a cardboard box into the collection bin to trap outgoing mail, which he would then fish out.

It is unclear whether his target was the mail-in ballots and what he intended to do with them.

Investigators reportedly believe that Ramos had been stealing the mail since May 2026.

Postal Inspectors began surveilling the drop box location on July 14 after receiving multiple reports of boxes being found in late June and early July, according to ABC 15.

Ramos was finally busted on July 21 when inspectorswatched him pull a trap containing outgoing mail out of the mailbox.

A spokesperson for the Maricopa County Recorder’s office said, “The postal inspectors contacted us regarding the incident and provided us with the unvoted yellow carrier envelopes that were in the mix they seized.”

They added, “The Recorder’s Office documented receipt from the postal inspector who brought themdirectly to MCTEC. The envelopes were not voted ballots but were instead outbound ballot packets. The particular voters were promptly reissued outbound ballot packets.”

The inaugural game of the Women’s Pro Baseball League kicked off this weekend with a national anthem performance that quickly became the talk of social media for all the wrong reasons.

Motown legend Martha Reeves and two other women delivered a now-viral rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” that left many in the crowd and on social media stunned.

The league’s first professional game in nearly three decades featured the Los Angeles Queens defeating the New York Heights 10-8 at Robin Roberts Stadium in Springfield, Illinois.

Unfortunately, the pregame ceremony overshadowed the game itself because of the anthem’s unhinged delivery.

The video was viewed nearly two million times on X alone by Sunday morning.

Reeves, 85, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee best known as the lead singer of Martha and the Vandellas, led the group in the brutal performance.

Mo’ne Davis may have been the most recognizable face on the field. Davis, who captured the hearts and minds of sports fans during the Little League World Series in 2014, started in center field for the Queens. She managed to cross the plate once in Los Angeles’ win.

Queens left fielder and pitcher Maggie Foxx, was 2-for-2 with two RBI. She also struck out two batters.

“When I walked on the field I started crying because of how much this moment meant, and how much it meant to everybody,” she said. “It means everything to us.”

Heights catcher Denae Benites was 4-for-4 with two RBI on the evening. She spoke about 99-year-old Maybelle Blair throwing out the first pitch. Blair played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, which ran from 1943 to 1954 and inspired “A League of Their Own.”

“I think that’s pretty incredible,” Benites said. “Maybelle’s been sticking with us since the beginning of this journey. She’s paved a path for us, really. … She’s a special person and I’m so happy that she got to make it out here and do that today.”

Vaporizing Meteor Photobombs the Lacerta Nebula

What's happening to this meteor? This bright meteor streak appeared and disappeared quickly during a long exposure of the Great Lacerta Nebula, seen faintly in red toward the center of the image. The meteoroid, likely a small pebble, creates its glow partly by heating and exciting surrounding air in Earth's atmosphere, but itself vaporizes and leaves wind-blown gas and dust with colors that give clues to its composition. The featured image was captured last month from Death Valley Observatories in Nevada, USA. This month, though, is particularly good for seeing meteors. Presently there are three meteor showers ongoing, although they are currently competing for visibility with the glow of a bright gibbous Moon. The most active of these showers, the Perseids, will be busiest in about 10 days - after the Moon has dimmed considerably. This year, the Perseids peak nearly coincides with not only a new Moon, but, from some locations, one that totally eclipses the Sun.
