New Sharpest Image of the Sun Uncovers Instability

What does the new sharpest image of our Sun show? Instability. To be clear, a certain kind of interactive process called the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI). This instability can create waves and swirls when two streams flow past each other - in this case variable streams of solar magnetic plasma. Long hypothesized to occur on the Sun's surface, KHI streaks and swirls were confirmed in just-released dramatic high-resolution images taken recently by the Inouye Solar Telescope in Hawaii, USA. The featured false-yellow image, actually taken in deep blue, is the highest resolution image yet of the Sun in visible light. It spans about the radius of the Earth, but its finest details are city sized. Visible are several smooth tops of changing solar granules, while the edges of the flower-like structures have been found to harbor multiple KHI swirls. Future research may investigate how the KHI helps move energy, magnetic fields, and may even heat the surrounding solar corona.

Summer Star Shower: Watch the Perseids with NASA!

The Perseids are back! One of the year’s brightest and most popular meteor showers has been ramping up since early July and will sparkle in the skies through the end of August.

The shower reaches its peak on the night of Aug. 12 into the early morning of Aug. 13, and its visibility should be ideal thanks to the new Moon phase that will keep the skies dark.

True to our blog’s name, we want to watch the skies with you. Join us as we stay up late to catch the show on our sky cameras.

We will be livestreaming a meteor watch party starting at midnight ET on Aug. 13 on YouTube. Throughout the night, we’ll talk to meteor experts, watch live views of the skies, and answer your questions.

We’ll be watching from cameras set up at Marshall Space Flight Center’s ALaMO – the Automated Lunar and Meteor Observatory, which is celebrating 20 years of discovery this year.

We will also share sky views from the International Space Station. During the peak, the shower can produce as many as 50-100 meteors per hour if viewing conditions are right.

The Perseids are among the oldest recorded meteor showers, with observations dating back more than 2,000 years.

They are a favorite annual event because they are reliably active and visible, take place in warmer months, and are known for producing fireballs – exceptionally bright meteors that leave a glowing trail as they streak across the sky.

The Perseids are so named because the meteors appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus, which is visible in the northern sky.

In Greek mythology, Perseus is the warrior who slayed Medusa and rescued Princess Andromeda, whose namesake constellation shares the sky nearby.

But don’t worry too much about finding Perseus to catch a glimpse of shooting stars. Meteors can appear anywhere overhead.

The best way to watch the Perseid meteor shower is to find a location with dark skies, give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness, and simply look up.

Then sit back, be patient, and enjoy one of the year’s premier celestial shows.

Spacewalk Begins for Solar Array Modifications

NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Anil Menon began a spacewalk at 8:33 a.m. EDT outside the International Space Station to prepare the 3B power channel for the future installation of new roll-out solar arrays.

Once installed, the arrays will provide additional power to support critical station operations, including its safe and controlled deorbit.

NASA’s IXPE May Have Proven 90-Year-Old Theory

A first of its kind measurement of a magnetar may have captured empty space behaving in a way physicists have predicted for 90 years, but never directly observed. The results published Wednesday in Nature.

Fast facts

Magnetars are a special class of neutron stars with ultra-strong magnetic fields, the strongest of any object in the observable universe, around a trillion times stronger than the strongest permanent magnets ever built on Earth.

These super magnetic neutron stars offer glimpses into the physics of intense environments that cannot be found anywhere else.

Neutron stars are the leftover cores of massive stars, formed at the end of their life cycles, that possess more mass than the Sun, condensed down to the size of a city, making them natural laboratories for studying extreme physics.

Scientists using NASA’s IXPE (Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer) conducted more than 140 hours of observations of the magnetar 1E 1547-5408, between March and April 2025, alongside NASA’s NICER (Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer) and Murriyang, CSIRO’s Parkes radio telescope, owned and operated by Australia’s national science agency. This was the first-ever coordinated radio and X-ray polarization measurement of a magnetar.

1E 1547-5408, spinning in a full rotation every 2 seconds, is a unique magnetar that consistently emits bright radio energy and X-ray light, for reasons scientists are still trying to understand.

Observations showed the polarization, or the orientation and level of alignment of the incoming photons, is nearly three times greater than seen in similar sources.

This high level of polarization was surprising, since the geometry of the magnetar’s magnetic fields suggest that the measurements we see should be close to zero at certain points in the star.

Standard surface emission models do not explain this large value either, indicating that another effect must be boosting the polarization.

Enter vacuum birefringence, a 90-year-old theory in the realm of quantum electrodynamics. First proposed in 1936, the theory suggests that the vacuum of space can be altered by extreme magnetic fields, far higher than those humans can create on Earth.

Under such conditions, the vacuum acts like a lens or a prism, filtering light based on the direction it is traveling, therefore enhancing its total polarization. The IXPE mission’s ability to measure X-ray polarization was essential to test this theory.

Simulations performed by the research team support the possibility of vacuum birefringence causing the distinct signal.

Hoa Dinh Thi, a postdoctoral associate at Rice University in Houston and co-lead author of the publication highlighting the results, said, “Our model suggests that reproducing the observed X-ray polarization signatures, while also satisfying the constraints set by radio observations, requires the presence of vacuum birefringence in the neutron star’s environment.

This finding exemplifies how neutron stars enable us to test fundamental physics in environments not replicable in labs on Earth.”

The large polarization measurements from the magnetar give strong support to the theoretical prediction, and could be the first time this effect has been directly observed anywhere.

“This result truly highlights the interdisciplinary power of the field of astrophysics,” said Rachael Stewart, a Ph.D. candidate at George Washington University and lead author of the paper published in Nature.

“The information we obtained from looking at this distant star core also gives us clues about the nature of the fabric of reality as we know it, and I find that to be incredible.”

Further IXPE observations of this source and other magnetars will confirm this signal and potentially reveal other exotic effects of quantum electrodynamics.

The final resting place of SpaceX's moon-smashing rocket has been found.

The Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, known as Danuri, has captured imagery of the crater blasted out by the Falcon 9 upper stage that slammed into the moon early on Wednesday morning (Aug. 5).

"Danuri began observations about 30 minutes before the collision and, through orbit control, passed over the impact site multiple times, conducting a total of 8 imaging sessions," officials with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) said via X this morning (Aug. 6).

"Through this observation, changes in the terrain around the impact site and traces of ejecta spread were confirmed."

"Danuri secured both pre-collision and immediate post-collision footage, enabling analysis of changes caused solely by the collision and providing important research data," they added in the X post, which shared several before-and-after images of the impact site.

The Falcon 9 in question launched on Jan. 15, 2025, sending two private robotic moon landers — Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost and ispace's Resilience — to a high, moon-crossing Earth orbit.

The duo then made their own way to the moon; Blue Ghost landed successfully on March 2 of that year, but Resilience crashed during its touchdown attempt.

The Falcon 9's first stage came back to Earth shortly after liftoff for recovery and reuse, as such boosters commonly do. Falcon 9 upper stages, by contrast, are expendable.

SpaceX usually disposes of them in Earth's atmosphere, but the upper stage on the Blue Ghost-Resilience mission used almost all of its fuel getting its payloads to their distant destination.

So the 8,800-pound (4,000 kilograms) rocket body remained up there, orbiting Earth — until solar activity and gravitational forces pushed it on a collision course for the moon.

That collision occurred at 2:34 a.m. EDT (0634 GMT) on Wednesday, according to KARI officials — right in line with predictions. Scientists calculated some other parameters ahead of time as well.

For example, the rocket body probably hit the moon at about 5,400 mph (8,690 kph), gouging out a crater up to 89 feet (27 meters) wide.

The new observations by Danuri, as well as future work by other lunar probes, will help verify such predictions.

"The observation data secured by Danuri will be linked with follow-up observations from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and utilized in international collaborative research," KARI officials said in the X post.

It may be that some ground-based telescopes caught the impact as well. Astronomers at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía in Spain believe they captured a video of ejected material blasting off of the lunar surface around the predicted time of impact:

The Falcon 9 upper stage wasn't the first rocket body to slam into the moon. The third stage of a Chinese Long March 3C crashed into the lunar surface on March 4, 2022, for example. And the third stage of NASA's Saturn V rocket gouged out craters during multiple Apollo moon missions.

Danuri is South Korea's first lunar probe. The spacecraft launched on Aug. 4, 2022 atop a Falcon 9 and began circling the moon four months later. It carries six payloads, five of them provided by Korean universities and research organizations.

The sixth is a NASA instrument called ShadowCam, which hunts for signs of water ice in permanently shadowed regions at the lunar poles.

President Trump was doing his part this week to raise money for the RNC, headlining a fundraiser Tuesday at a dinner at his golf club in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Tickets reportedly started at $15,000.

On the heels of President Donald Trump's Tuesday fundraiser in Los Angeles, and with the November midterms less than 100 days away, Washington Republicans hold a commanding financial edge over Washington Democrats that could prove decisive in key races for control of Congress.

The Republican National Committee reported more than $128 million in cash on hand at the end of June with no debt, while the Democratic National Committee had about $16 million in cash and roughly $18.5 million in debt, leaving it in the red.

The disparity extends to other national party committees and aligned super PACs, giving Republicans nearly double the cash of their Democratic counterparts overall, not counting additional resources from groups linked to Trump.

The fundraiser in California was part of a two-day western swing for Trump in which he headlined a closed-press RNC fundraiser at his golf club in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, before traveling to Las Vegas to discuss the economy, seeking to boost party coffers and highlight administration achievements ahead of the midterms.

Tickets for the dinner and reception reportedly started at $15,000 and those for entry into the high-level roundtable discussion as much as $150,000.

Despite the money disparity between the national parties, Democrats running for office in the November midterms or seeking reelection are successfully raising money.

The Democratic-aligned fundraising platform ActBlue recently reported that it had raised $586 million for candidates in the second quarter of 2026 alone, including $215 million raised in June. That figure included contributions from 573,000 first-time donors.

Historically, the party or candidate able to spend more on advertising and get-out-the-vote efforts tends to prevail. Analyses of congressional races show the higher-spending campaign wins about 91% of the time, driven in part by the advantages of incumbency and the ability to saturate airwaves and mobilize voters.

Webb opens a Treasure Chest filled with stars

This NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope Picture of the Month takes us to a fantastical realm within our home galaxy, where piercing starlight and billowing winds sculpt dust clouds into inventive shapes.

This scene is from the Carina Nebula, which lies just 7500 light-years away in the constellation Carina (the Keel).

Spanning roughly 260 light-years, the nebula is home to an incredible collection of objects, including the Cosmic Cliffs revealed in the first-ever Webb image release.

The Carina Nebula is also the nearest high-mass star-forming region that allows astronomers to study the full range of star formation.

This nebula houses some of the most massive stars in our galaxy as well as tens of thousands of protostars, offering a valuable opportunity to understand how stars shape their neighbourhoods.

The feature highlighted in today’s image, aptly called the Treasure Chest, looks right at home in this celestial sculpture garden.

The Treasure Chest is what’s known as a cometary globule. A cometary globule is an isolated cloud of gas and dust with a dense, dark head and a sweeping tail.

These clouds often somewhat resemble comets, but the Treasure Chest looks distinctly like a wooden chest with its lid wide open.

However, this chest doesn’t contain jewels or gold coins, but instead a compact cluster of young stars. These stars are responsible for the otherworldly glow coming from within the Treasure Chest, revealed by Webb’s sensitive Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam).

Researchers estimate that the Treasure Chest’s cluster contains about 70 stars, the most massive of which is a rare O-type star roughly 19 times as massive as the Sun.

The star cluster is likely around 1.3 million years old, though earlier estimates found it to be as young as just 100 000 years old. Because of its youth, the cluster is still deeply embedded within the dusty clouds of the Treasure Chest.

The individual stars in the cluster are wrapped up in dust as well; astronomers have found evidence that many of these stars are surrounded by circumstellar discs.

Over time, the brilliant starlight from these young stars will dissipate the surrounding cloud and reveal the entire cluster.

The key to the Treasure Chest’s sculptural shape lies outside this image: just 39 light-years to the northwest, as measured on the sky, sits Eta Carinae, the most luminous object in the entire Carina Nebula.

Eta Carinae is a star system containing at least two stars, one of which is 100 times as massive as the Sun. This star alone is about 5 million times as luminous as the Sun.

Adding to this intense radiation is the nearby star cluster Trumpler 16, which also contains several extremely hot massive stars.

With Webb, astronomers have carried out an observing programme (#5408; PI: Reiter) dedicated to studying how young stars in the Carina Nebula collect gas from their surroundings and expel it through outflows.

Smoke plume from Greek wildfires seen by Sentinel-3

Hot, dry and windy conditions have seen numerous wildfires break out in the last few days in the region of Viotia, northwest of Athens, Greece.

This image, captured on 2 August 2026 by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission, reveals the scale of the cloud of smoke from the wildfires. The smoke plume can be seen drifting southward and stretching across large areas of the Mediterranean Sea.

In response to the wildfires, the Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service was activated. The service uses satellite observations to help civil protection authorities and, in cases of disaster, the international humanitarian community, respond to emergencies.

On the same day, Copernicus Sentinel-2 captured a closer view of the affected area showing the active fire front.

From orbit, Earth-observing satellites offer a unique way of tracking the spread of fires and the extent of smoke plumes, as well as supporting emergency crews battling the blazes on the ground.

In the conditions of severe structural weakness and crisis of legitimacy, the Islamic Republic intends to advance and implement the Caspian Sea Legal Regime Convention (Actao Convention). This effort of the regime, without the support of the will of the Iranian nation and without a clear and complete guarantee of the country's historical rights, is a worrying action and a serious threat to Iran's national interests.

According to the treaties of 1921 and 1940 between Iran and the Soviet Union, the legal regime of the Caspian Sea was formed based on the common rights of the parties and the principle of agreement and common interests.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the newly independent countries in the Almaty Declaration (December 1991) emphasized adherence to the treaties of the former Soviet Union and ensuring the implementation of international obligations arising from its agreements and treaties by successor states.

Accordingly, any fundamental change in the legal status of this strategic water area should be done with the joint agreement of all coastal countries and with full respect for Iran's rights.However, the Actao Convention provides for the possibility of concluding bilateral and multilateral agreements between coastal countries on parts of the Caspian Sea bed and subbed; Parts that were previously considered part of the joint water zone between Iran and the Soviet Union.

It is a dangerous heresy that, by circumventing the principle of consensus among all coastal States, effectively undermines Iran's historical standing and diminishes the country's role in determining the fate of the Caspian Sea.

Since the signing of the Aktau Convention in 2018, I have repeatedly warned that it is not possible to protect national interests from a position of weakness. At the same time, I emphasized that the criminal sect of the Islamic Republic sacrifices the interests of the Iranian nation and the country for its survival, and in foreign policy, it submits to successive blackmails from a position of weakness.

My position on the current process is the same. I consider the Islamic Republic's attempt to ratify this convention to be an act contrary to Iran's national interests.No decision about Iran's resources, borders and rights in this water area will be legitimate without the real consent and participation of the Iranian nation. Iran's rights in the Caspian Sea cannot be traded or waived. Any action to violate these rights will be recorded in the historical memory of the Iranian nation and the decision makers will be held accountable and held accountable to the Iranian nation.

Three Republican attorneys general subpoenaed Dr. Anthony Fauci as part of a joint investigation into how he handled the COVID pandemic.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, West Virginia Attorney General John McCuskey, and Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill issued the subpoena.

The investigation is focused on awards, professional opportunities, financial incentives, grants and COVID-19 guidance that impacted Florida businesses and consumers, according to an announcement from Uthmeier's office.

"Government officials have a certain level of immunity in their official capacities, but if Fauci personally profited off of the ‘guidance’ he issued, that very well could have broken Florida law," Uthmeier said in the statement.

The subpoena is informed by the "diary" that Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., released last month. The documents show that substantial awards were given, including an approximately $900,000 Dan David Foundation prize, a NIAID research grant to the University of Florida Scripps Biomedical Research program, offers of named professorships and book deals, board positions, private foundation partnerships, and other professional and financial opportunities concurrent with his federal role and public recommendations impacting Florida.

The subpoena demands documents related to those awards be produced.

A federal judge in Mississippi ruled on Wednesday that "tower dump" warrants are unconstitutional.

In a "tower dump" warrant, law enforcement requests a cell phone company turn over time and location data for all mobile devices connected to specific cell towers during a specified period, The Hill reported.

Last year, law enforcement sought approval for several of these warrants as part of an investigation into gang-related activity in the area of Jackson, Mississippi. Authorities argued that the data could help identify the suspects involved, particularly incidents without known suspects.

A magistrate judge ruled the "tower dump" warrants are general warrants and therefore impermissible, and District Judge Carlton Reeves agreed.

While the warrants could help identify potential suspects, Reeves wrote, "law enforcement would also have access to the cellular records of countless individuals, the vast majority of whom were merely passing by a location at the ‘wrong’ time." The ruling repeatedly referenced the Supreme Court's recent decision that "geofence warrants" are unconstitutional under the Fourth Amendment.

Navy Removes Head of Drone Programs After 8 Months, PAE Maritime Head Miller Now Leading PAE RAS

The Navy’s portfolio acquisition executive for robotics and autonomous systems – the first job the service created as part of a broader acquisition overhaul last year – was removed from the position on Wednesday, fewer than eight months after stepping into the role.

Rebecca Gassler assumed the helm of the Portfolio Acquisition Executive for Robotic and Autonomous Systems (PAE RAS) upon its creation in December. Chris Miller, the head of PAE Maritime, will step into the PAE RAS job on an acting basis, according to a service news release.

The Navy also announced the creation of a new job called direct reporting portfolio manager for robotic and autonomous systems, or DRPM RAS, who will answer to Bill Toti. Toti is performing the duties of the Under Secretary of the Navy. Miller will also serve as the DRPM RAS in an acting capacity.

“This marks a decisive step toward correcting years of fragmented requirements, resourcing, and acquisition practices that dispersed accountability, complicated industry engagement, and slowed delivery to the warfighter,” reads the service statement.

“The organization is designed to operate in concert with the Department of War’s DRPM for unmanned offensive and defensive systems (UxS).”

Miller has been serving in the PAE Maritime job that former Navy Secretary John Phelan created earlier this year as part of a department-wide reorganization of the acquisition jobs.

Rear Adm. Casey Moton will now take Miller’s place as the head of PAE Maritime, three sources familiar with the transition told USNI News. It’s unclear if the move will be permanent. Moton has been serving as the deputy PAE Maritime for aircraft carriers.

The Navy in December chose Gassler to serve as the Navy’s first PAE RAS, overseeing the service’s new acquisition office to quickly purchase more drones. Gassler reported to the assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition.

Gassler, as the PAE RAS, oversaw nearly 50 unmanned programs across the Navy and Marine Corps, including the Medium Unmanned Surface Vehicle program for which the Navy has altered the acquisition framework twice in the last several years.

The most recent selection of seven concepts for prototyping resulted in two competitors suing the Navy, accusing the service of not following its own selection criteria.

The Navy has said it wants to test the MUSV prototypes by the end of September as part of the Navy’s $5 billion drone effort funded by the Fiscal Year 2027 Reconciliation Act.

Gassler previously worked on Project Overmatch – an opaque Navy endeavor trying to connect systems and platforms to a battle network that can share targeting data across the joint force – over the last few years, according to her LinkedIn.

She did not immediately respond to a request for comment in a message left by USNI News on Wednesday.

The creation of the DRPM RAS job within the Navy comes after the Trump administration stood up direct reporting portfolio managers for high-profile acquisition programs like submarines and the Golden Dome ballistic missile defense program.

Those DRPMs report directly to Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg.

In late June the Pentagon created another DRPM for unmanned systems to oversee tens of billions of dollars in drone programs across the Defense Department, USNI News reported at the time. This person also answers directly to Feinberg.

The memo calling for the new DRPM unmanned position notably excluded the Navy’s MUSV program from the office’s oversight.
